understanding negative space using ching’s architectural elements architecture design studio, fall semester, 2005, Professor Muldrow
in the first chapter of ching, the plane is described as a primary element in architectural design. overhead, wall +
the combination of the three types of planes, base, forms a basic architectural structure.
by inserting a human form
at the convergence of these planes, one can understand the basics of perspective. this freehand drawing project was to be done in a 1’ square to show how using black + white can display negative space. 15 drawings
poetry see spots run to see spots run around in one’s mind relax. understand the situation in a bind. elements dwell from retinal actvity. comprehension evicted by mental elasticity. count what one likes, perceive what one confuses. patience and composure, one lacks, one loses. establish a purpose, carry out a plan. to do is to fail, or accomplish what one can. pity over outcomes, displeasure with concentration experience stability, engage in conversation. don’t enrage happiness, don’t heal all the pain. don’t bring out the sun, don’t bring down the rain. the spots are your friend, their presence essential. don’t you know that your spots have so much potential? refrain from the chase, treasure the embrace if you vanquish them now, you won’t know your place. discover your spots, they’re like money in a bank, because seeing spots run is better than drawing a blank.
of course awaken in me so that i may sleep viability to the one who cares to keep the hope in life that is always there neither he, nor she, nor i despair intrinsically convey my message here innocently live, for to shed a tear if one cannot try but to utter a word which is simply a breath whose eyes are blurred travel to my soul and touch my mind so that communication stems from another kindof life, of living, through one primary force which is to believe in the certainty of breathing, of course.

solid 8/4 mahogany with cedar stain + clear lacquer 26 furniture
displaying the beauty of mahogany was my inspiration for this piece. the coffee table is the centerpiece, the focal point of any room, and i wanted mine to express that.
_my first design + build furniture project_
the stain + finish bring out the best of the wood grain, and the modern, low profile, rectangular form endures stylistically + functionally.
m i t e r e d corners with b i s c u i t joints allow for m a x strength
