INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE: A COLLABORATION IN HEALING By Lisa Garr with Gina M. Salvati “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” -- Hippocrates

Allopathic” medicine has been challenging traditional “natural” medicine (healing based on plants and spiritual energy) since the 19th century. By 1960, allopathic was dominant in the field. But then, enter the counter-culture of the 1960s which, along with chiropractors, nutritionists and the west’s discovery of eastern practices such as acupuncture, produced what we today call “alternative” or “holistic” medicine. Generally, alternative medicine is associated with dietary approaches, supplements, herbs, yoga, meditation and other mind-body techniques as well as energy therapies, light and sound healing, psychic healing and prayer, among other modalities. By 1997 the tortoise overtook the hare, so to speak. According to the Bravewell Collaborative, total visits to complementary and alternative medicine providers that year exceeded total visits to primary care physicians. A 2002 national health survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 36 percent of American adults were using some form of complementary/alternative medicine. When prayer was included in the survey, the number rose to 62 percent. In 2006, a federal study found that Americans spent an estimated 30 billion dollars on alternative therapies. This confirms the obvious: What was once considered “alternative” has become mainstream. A practice known as “integrative” medicine complements allopathic practices with alternative ones, even right there in many of your hospitals and doctor’s offices. At its best, integrative medicine is intended to treat the root cause of an illness rather than the symptoms. Certain alternative therapies can eliminate the need for some prescriptions and procedures entirely. Even in cases where prescription medication and allopathic treatment is necessary, there is often a valuable and sometimes crucial role for vitamins, supplements and other modalities to offset the side effects of medications and procedures and to hasten the rebuilding of immune systems. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, founder and director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at University of Arizona, combining both Western and alternative modalities will be dominant in the future. “I think clearly this is the kind of medicine that people want,” he told me. “It’s also the kind of medicine that many physicians want to practice because it’s much more satisfying than the way conventional medicine has become.” One good local example of integrative medicine is the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine, founded in 1993 to promote health and to treat disease in a community setting using a combination of qi-gong and tai chi exercises, Chinese herbal medicine, massage, acupuncture and acupressure, and nutrition. Other integrative medicine centers in L.A. also offer a blend of conventional and alternative approaches. The UCLA Collaborative Centers for Integrative Medicine conducts research and clinical programs around the teaching, practice and science of mind-body, complementary and alternative medicine. Nearby, the UCLA Semel 6 cb Fitness, Health & Beauty Magazine 2008

Institute Cousins Center for Psychoneuro Immunology investigates the relationship between the brain and the immune system as a way of understanding how subjective human experience affects health and resistance to disease. The Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology, part of UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, also studies the effect of complementary medicine, including nutrition, herbs and botanicals. The center considers its mission to fulfill patient desires for guidance on nutrition, supplements, psychological concerns and all matters of the mind, body, spirit and emotions. Even so, Dr. Mary Hardy, the center’s medical director, cautions, “While great benefit can be derived from using natural medicines during cancer care, it is important to consult a knowledgeable practitioner to avoid any potential problems such as toxicities or drug-herb interactions.” More avant-garde integrative doctors go further, arguing that many prescription drugs are dangerous and if taken at all, should be complemented with natural remedies. Dr. Hyla Cass, MD, a local integrative medicine specialist, writes in her latest book, Supplement Your Prescription, “Prescription drugs can rob you of the very vitamins and minerals your body needs to overcome your current health condition. Whether you suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic heartburn, arthritis, diabetes or depression, the prescription drugs you are taking can actually make your condition worse. The good news is that there are enzymes, minerals and supplements to offset the side effects.” A growing number of doctors are also now embracing what were formally considered “woo-woo” mind-body techniques such as meditation, stress reduction, positive imaging and even psychic and energetic healing. Still, many allopathic doctors remain cautious if not hostile to alternative treatments, and many integrative practitioners insist on not overstating the benefits of natural remedies. Dr. Barrie R. Cassileth, chief of Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center in New York City, believes no alternative treatments on their own are effective in treating cancer. “They are indeed useless and potentially harmful, because there are no viable ‘alternatives’ to mainstream cancer care. Complementary therapies are all helpful. They control symptoms but of course do not treat the cancer. Some work better for particular symptoms than others, but patients won’t go wrong if they select any of them.” One of the greatest challenges facing integrative medicine is that many physicians feel they lack the luxury of diagnostic time. Presently, doctors spend an average of just six minutes per patient. “Some people might feel like, ‘Well, this is kind of the touchyfeely, soft side of medicine. Why pay attention when you know what’s important is getting the X-ray and giving the antibiotic?’” says Harvard’s Dr. Arthur Kleinman in the PBS documentary “The New Medicine”. But if doctors don’t take time to understand the patient’s personality, history and habits as a whole, he says, “You’re practicing veterinary medicine.” o

ity Yoga opened its doors in 1999 with the intention of building and supporting a community for Anusara yoga. Anusara Yoga, a style of hatha yoga founded by John Friend 11 years ago, gracefully combines the beauty of the human spirit with precise principles of biomechanics. City Yoga is the hub for Anusara yoga in the Los Angeles area, and has grown into a place where people can come and connect with something greater than themselves. Owned by a spunky married couple, Anthony and Rebecca Benenati, this urban studio is a great escape from the chaos of city life. The Benenatis were drawn to this style of yoga because they realized these teachings made the poses more accessible and created a way for the teacher to connect more deeply with students. World-renowned instructors love teaching at City Yoga because of the warmth and playfulness the space provides: brick walls, fresh sunlight, hardwood floors, the sweet smell of essential oils and a super fun staff. You really can’t go wrong at this studio. Some of the best Anusara teachers have come out of the teacher training program offered by City Yoga once a year. This thought-provoking and inspiring curriculum teaches more than just how to guide students through a series of poses, rather it encourages the student-teacher to embody all of the qualities that yoga has to offer for a richer experience. City Yoga offers a variety of classes, ranging from Therapeutics, Basics 101 (for the newbies), restorative classes, prenatal, baby & me, mixed-level classes and a wildly popular advanced class on Saturday mornings. Try a 6:30 a.m. class, where you get to do sun salutations in the beautiful upstairs studio while gazing out of big arched windows at the sun rising. Or come try any number of City

Yoga’s special workshops or one of the free community discussions that happen every second Tuesday of the month. Legendary meditation teacher Sally Kempton is coming in April 2008. Anthony and Rebecca are also very proud to have added two 11th step yoga classes: half traditional AA meeting and half yoga. This class was the brainchild of two teacher training graduates. At City Yoga, we believe that your body is an instrument and when that instrument is finely tuned, a beautiful sound emerges. Within structure, true freedom will blossom. The journey of life is one of endless possibility; we invite you to join us on this journey. o

oga Evolution Expo came to Los Angeles for the first time via Jason Goodman, president and publisher of FitYoga, PilatesStyle and LAYoga magazines. It was a small expo, but the energy was clear and pleasant. There were classes and events covering topics ranging from yoga, pilates and Ayurveda health. As a therapist of traditional Oriental medicine, what interested me was how these modalities can help chronic physical problems or disease. For 51 years I have been doing yoga, and for 54 years have been battling cancer caused by radiation overdose. The chi generated from yoga has helped to keep me alive.

YOGA Yoga is a practice dating back thousands of years that aims to align body, mind, breath and spirit in a peaceful and contemplative manner through gentle exercise and poses called asanas, created to stimulate organs or glands. Today, 800 million Indians and 30 million Americans practice yoga. It has been known to relieve pain, stress, backache, the neuropathy of diabetes, asthma, arthritis, heart disease, bronchitis, constipation, hypertension, indigestion, anxiety, depression, insomnia, eye problems, fatigue, obesity, hyperacidity and sinusitis, among other ailments. It stimulates weight loss, improves thyroid function, enhances body strength and tones muscles. Of all the workshops at the expo, a few greatly impressed me. One was Kristin McGee, creator of the first MTV Yoga video, because of her knowledge, presentation, participant care, focus and the delicate manner in which she adjusted peoples’ posture. McGee has appeared on CNN, Fox and NBC, and has graced the covers of Pilates Style, FitYoga, Self, Shape, Fitness and Women's Health. Another was Jill Miller, whose classes focused on creating a stronger, more fluid pelvis and hips. Her sessions were unique and sprinkled with wisdom. Jill has worked for the Discovery Health Channel, and has appeared in FitYoga, Yoga Journal, Breathe and Yogi Times. Cameron Shayne of yoga and martial arts fame was also brilliant. His classes flowed with knowledge and humor and helped transform terrified students into radiantly confident people. Shayne is an author, creator of Budokon yoga, and has worked with numerous celebrities and movie companies. Also at the expo were Melanie and Robert Sachs, who truly embody Ayurvedic medicine, which translates into long life and knowledge. Ayurveda teaches that we are born in a state of balance and that the processes of life disrupt this balance, creating disease. Its aim is to balance the body, mind and spirit and to prevent illness. The Sachs’ workshop focused on self-massage and other practices used to improve vision, hearing and the senses of smell, taste, and touch. 16 cb Fitness, Health & Beauty Magazine 2008

PILATES As a child growing up in Germany, Joseph Pilates was plagued by illness. He created a set of exercises called Controlology, which he renamed the Pilates Method after immigrating to New York City and opening a studio in 1925. Pilates believed that through proper deep breathing and intense focus, the mind could learn to control the muscles. Present at the expo was Ron Fletcher, who studied with Pilates in New York, and in 1970 opened his own Hollywood studio. Kyria Sabin, who teaches the Ron Fletcher Towelwork method, was also there. It was a pleasure to watch her lead students in percussive breath work exercises.

THE ACCOUTREMENTS Within the movement industry, clothing and gear are of utmost importance. There were many eye-catching products at the expo, including Toe Sox, little socks with individual toes and a rubberstudded sole to keep one anchored vertically when exercising. Also, Erin Douglass of We Pilates clothing was displaying beautiful and tasteful pilates and yoga clothing. Erin is currently changing her whole line to American-processed cotton. Another clothing company supporting a conscious mission is I Love Yoga, which donates 50 percent of its profits to the Africa Yoga Project, enriching the lives of children in Nairobi, Kenya with yoga, acrobatics and dance. Another item I stumbled upon which seems both essential and practical to me — having fallen from a yoga asana 30 years ago and breaking my neck — was the Wrist Assured Gloves, which stop your palms from slipping while you tackle mat or weight work. They are very comfortable and specially designed to eliminate wrist strain and pain! Last but not least I came upon the Peak Pilates Reformer, equipment reminiscent of a medieval torture chamber. However, I noted pilates enthusiasts drooling over its various moveable parts. The Stott Pilates Reformer seemed less intimidating, sleeker and easier to use. As a pilates newcomer, I was most impressed with APT Pilates Elite Series Reformers, which were being offered at substantial discounts. Glide was the Word! Jeanne Elizabeth Blum, MT. ith the goal of making clothes for healthy bodies and a healthy planet, Hard Tail is pleased to announce the addition of Hard Tail Green Label to its signature sportswear collection. Hard Tail Green Label is a selection of Hard Tail's figure-flattering styles, like the always-popular roll down yoga pant, with the addition of a few new styles that leave a smaller "imprint" on the environment. The new collection includes tanks, tees, dresses, hoodies, skirts, pants and capris to mix, match and layer. The garments are made of organic cottons and sustainable fabrics such as bamboo, and dyed naturally with earth-friendly dyes. The new ultra-soft all-organic fabrications include jersey, cotton rib, pointelle, thermal and cotton lycra. As always, all Hard Tail garments are manufactured in the United States reducing the carbon footprint of the product and supporting US-based jobs. Forget the earth tones of typical organic apparel. Staying true to the brand's roots, Hard Tail Green Label comes in an extravagant assortment of deep, rich and fruity colors. Green Label styles are easily recognizable by the green label on the back of the garment, replacing the signature red label, and a new informative hangtag. Prices are only slightly higher than the originals and range from $40 to $85. Find the new Green Label and the brand's eponymous "red label" collection at Hard Tail's flagship store on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade, as well as select retailers across the country. o
