Wayfinding // Problem Design 360, Fall 2014 Graphic Design II – Lucia Weilein
At its most general level, wayfinding is a term used to describe the way a subject navigates through a space— or “spacial problem solving.” In contemporary use, it typically refers to a cohesive package of simple symbols, colors, and typography.
Your Task
Deliverables
You will design a wayfinding system for UW-Stout’s School of Art
— Create a booklet, effectively a “style guide,” showing off
and Design. The specifics of how this system works is up to you, but it must include an icon for each sub-department under the
your wayfinding package. — This should contain: Final images of your icons, examples of
S.O.A.D. You must carefully consider your choices for color and
your color color and type choices, and a minimum of three
type, as well as things like the sizes and locations of signage.
(3) images of your signage “in use” (these can be Photo
Things to Consider What does a person need to know to successfully navigate the S.O.A.D.? Where are the points of confusion? How can aesthetic components of wayfinding contribute to the experience of the space? Are there concerns with lighting? Would someone recognize an individual icon if they had never seen the entire
shopped into photographs, or you could take photographs of signs you hang). You must include your process work/sketches. — You will be graded on your wayfinding package as well as your booklet. The booklet should be a professional, thoughtful, attractive presentation of your project, which is perfect for portfolios and mid-program reviews.
set? What if someone does not speak English? How easy would it be to move/change the signs if needed?
Minimum Required Components + Tasks — An icon for each undergraduate department in the S.O.A.D: Entertainment Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design and Interactive Media, Interior Design, Ceramics, Metals, Sculpture, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Art History. Keep in mind that some categories have further sub-categories, e.g. Entertainment Design also encompasses Comics, Animation, Film, etc. These icons should be used for identifying classrooms, offices, etc. — At least two (2) examples of directional signs. — One (1) warning sign + two (2) label signs. — A key/legend, if applicable. — A simple map. — Establish parameters for typography. Note: Type should be kept to a minimum. Your icons should be able to stand alone without a label. — Establish a color scheme. — Determine locations for placement.

Some of the icons utilize multiple forms to make up their composition. This use of a secondary element is meant to give the reader another clue into which icon the department belongs to without the inclusion of title text.
