01. Orion Park Urban Park Design Location | Cannery Park, Cambridge, MD Date | Spring 2014 Course | Capstone Studio The City of Cambridge hosted a competition for the Spring 2014 University of Maryland Landscape Architecture studio in designing an urban park for the Cambridge community. The students were challenged to come up with a design that could reviltalize an abandoned food canning factory grounds for the community while preserving both the environment and the historical value of the site.

Design Process Existing Condition Existing condition displayed what is currently on the site, which includes, existing woodland, rails to trail, stream, building structures and surrounding greenspaces. These existing conditions set the framework for the proposed park design.

Entrance and Central Space Vehecular entry is located on the east side of the park, closest to the busiest street while multiple entry are opened on all sides for maximum pedestrian influx from the surrounding neighborhood. Central gathering space is identified to meet and connect all entry points to the heart of the park.

Major Circulation Connectng the etnries and the central space, the major circulation for the entire park is maped out. the major connections not only connect the etrances to the gathering space but also the proposed new Phillips Factory building.

Partition of Spaces and introduction of stream The major circulation divided the central gathering space into small pockets of spaces to allow differnt type of activities within the park. Large pedestrian entry areas are also created for a welcoming opening to the park. Existing stream is drawn further into the site for headwater treatment and creating interaction.

Final Design

Riparian Buffer and Stream Restoration

The final design shows the spacial relationship between different areas of the park and display the water treatment areas implemented throughout the site. Pockets of water treatment areas such as rain gardens, bioswale, and living wall are placed all around the site to compliment the major stream restoration design, which seeks to filter headwater going into the Choptank.

Time Line starting point information Overview

The new rails to trails design adopted the concept of a timeline: telling the history and story of Cambridge and the Phillips Packing Company. This creates a place of memory that connects back to the community.

1648 Establishment of Cambridge 1800s Civil War and the begining of Canning industry

1902 The Start: Begining of Philips Packing Company

1939 The Peak: Best Times of Phillips Packing Company 60 kinds of canned goods | 10,000 workers 1957 The End: The Closing of Phillips Packing Company

The Memory Philips Packing Company Factory Building

The new design aims to restore stream currently burried underneath the park. Spliting the park in 2 general parts: A. forest conservation (100ft buffer) and B. opening up to the public (50ft buffer). Plantings are implemented along the stream and aims to treat water before entering the creek.

Final Plan Programs + Forest Conservation + Board walk + Interactive water fountain + Open lawn + Stream berms + Amphitheatre + Skate park + Storage room + Old machinary sculpture

02. National Mall Urban Design Location | The National Mall, Washington D.C. Date | Fall 2013 Course | Urban Design Studio The Smithsonian Metro Station is one of the busiest metro station in all of Washington D.C. with thousands of visitors passing through on a daily basis. The national mall seeks a new welcome center that can replace the exiting visitor center within the Smithsonian Institution Building, which currently lacks visibility and a sense of place for the visitors. The new proposed design seek to address the issue as well as creating a signiature space that spands the entire width of the Mall where all visitors can gather and enjoy.

03. Buzzard Point Urban Design Location | Buzzard Point Watefront, Washington D.C. Date | Fall 2013 Course | Urban Design Studio Located at the south of the United States Capitol, Buzzard Point posses tremendous potential for new development due to its unique location. Currently a located that is relatively undeveloped, re designing the site could create a new neighborhood of potential waterfront development. The new design takes a look into the future of the city where clean water flows through the river. It is focused on creating a cleaner urban footprint by creating a urban greenway that flows through the enire site and connects with the waterfont and the surrounding community. It also seeks to increase safe and enjoyable walking expereinces throughout the site to increase pedestrian and bike activities. Lastly, the new proposal will included the new DC United stadium to attract commericial activities along with the new waterfront development.

04. Watermark Place Stormwater Management Location | Watermark Place Condominiums. Columbia, MD Date | Spring 2014 Course | Capstone Studio Community Watermark Place Condominiums is an old residential building located at Columbia Maryland. The resident of Watermark Place has requested stormwater treatment solutions around the building. With steep slopes around the building, this makes an interesting project to explore ways of stormwater management.

Redesign Instalation layout

“ Beat Box repsonds to Evergreen, the art-filled house, and the Garrett’s desire to have it seen as a place welcoming ‘lovers of music, art, and beautiful things.’ Fabric boxes create a maze-like series of hallways with blank walls - actual canvases - holding the potential for creative expression. Different heights inspired by modern digital music beat patterning, encourage an energized interaction wit he whole. Throughout the summer, young artists will paint these boxes, further emphasizing evergreen as a place where art is enjoyed and celebrated.”
