Hello!

4

Let’s measure lengths! We don’t carry rulers around with us everywhere. How can we estimate lengths without a ruler? Measure the length of your shoe Length of shoe =

cm

Placing one foot directly in front of each other, try to estimate how many footsteps it takes to walk a length of 1 meter.

Number of footsteps = Can you estimate what is the total length of 10 footsteps? Length of 10 footsteps =

cm

Can you calculate the following? Length (meters) Length (centimeters) 2 meters 300 centimeters 1 meter 5

How much do things weigh? Before boarding a plane I would need to weigh my luggage. How would you weigh things at home? At a supermarket?

Item

6

Circle which weighing scale you used

Weight (g/kg)

When two items are of the same size, does it mean that they weigh the same?

We have learnt that 1kg = 1000g. We have also learnt to choose the right weighing scale. Now let’s do some conversions! Grams (g)

Kilograms (kg)

500 1000 2000 3 5 7

Fun Fact Do you know... A normal Boeing passenger plane weighs about 77,000kg. The bigger ones can weigh up to 95,000kg.

Patterns all around us When airplanes land at night, there are lights on the runway. Some of these lights form patterns that tell pilots where to go.

Take a look at the lights on the ceiling. Do you see a pattern? Which of the following patterns cannot be found? (a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Which of the figures below cannot be considered as a repeating unit pattern on the ceiling?

(a)

(b)

(c)

(d)

Complete the pattern that comes next in A and B.

A

B

What are the 2 ma jor shapes involved in the patterns you drew above?

Look at patterns created by the floor tiles. Can you draw out the 4 types of tiles found in this row?

9

Time to fly!

Flight boards tell us when our planes leave, and where we can board them. What other information can we get from flight boards? 1. Look for SIA flight from Singapore to Shanghai and write down 2 departure times.

(a)

am/pm

(b) am/pm

10

Draw the hour and minute hands on the clock face to show the two departure times in question 1. (a)

(b)

Calculate the time difference for the two departure times that you have recorded in question 1. Time difference =

Paper aeroplanes and picture graphs A. 1) Sort the paper planes according to model. 2) Put 2 planes of the same model into each box provided. 3) Line up the boxes on the floor according to the model. 4) For each box of 2 planes, paste a sticker into the boxes below to create the picture graph.

!

Dart Each 12

Square Glider

Floating Aeroplane

stands for 2 aeroplanes. !

Which model has the most planes?

Which model has the least planes?

B. 1) Look at the picture graph given to you. 2) Each box represents 2 aeroplanes. 3) Based on the photograph, answer the following questions:

How many ‘Darts’ are there?

How many ‘Floating Aeroplanes’ are there?

How many more ‘Darts’ are there than ‘Floating Aeroplanes’?

Which 2 models have more than 2 but less than 8 planes each? & How many ‘Darts’ and ‘Quad Wings’ are there in all?

13

C. 1) Using the photograph, you will create a Bar Graph from a Picture Graph. 2) For each model, outline and shade the graph using boxes below (the first bar has been outlined and shaded for you). 10

Circle the correct word: 14

This is a horizontal/ vertical bar graph.

!

How is this bar graph different from the picture graph in part B? (1) (2)

D. 1) Look at the picture graph given to you. 2) Each box represents 2 aeroplanes. 3) Based on the photograph, answer the following questions. I have 4 planes less than the number of ‘Quad Planes’. What model am I?

I have 2 times as many planes as ‘Gliders’. What model am I?

How many more ‘Square Gliders’ must there be so that there will be the same number of ‘Square Gliders’ as ‘Darts’?

I have more than 6 planes but less than 10 planes. What model am I?
