Performance Notes: Synthesis is a concept which has fascinated me lately. “(Open Intervals)” is another realized instance of this fascination.

The premise of the work is a restriction based not on pitch sets but rather on interval sets. Borrowing notation from the world of mathematics, each movement is named by expressing the intervals of which it makes use. I chose to use (open interval) notation rather than [closed interval] notation to emphasize the inherent music contained within the intervals rather than to emphasize the intervals themselves.

In the more-than-likely case that A, Eb, and Bb clarinets are not all available, it is perfectly acceptable to perform the work on whichever clarinets are handy, keeping within the spirit of the work. For instance, (A, Bb, and Bb) would be a satisfactory rendition, as would even something so far afield as (bass, Bb, basset horn). Of course, the work may be performed entirely on one clarinet as well.

I. D = (4,4.5)U(4.5,5) Making use of the perfect fourth, tritone, and perfect fifth, the first movement is restricted entirely to the chalumeau register.

Even the Bs and Cs (third line/space) should be played with alternate side-key fingerings to keep them in this register. Written in ternary form, the A section makes liberal use of grace notes to produce a variety of apparent intervals from three relatively wide ones. A stepwise motive based on whole and half steps is produced despite the interval set chosen. The B section is more languid, employing a more idiomatic use of the wide intervals.

II. O = (1.5,2)U(2,7) Making use of the minor second, major second, and major seventh, the second movement is restricted entirely to the clarion register. The high C# to F# (above the staff) should be played with alternate side-key fingerings to keep them in this register.

Perhaps unsurprisingly at this point, this movement is also written in ternary form. The A section is deliberately frantic (but precise!), with a short, intense, repetitive motive driving the piece forward. The B section is much calmer, perhaps hinting in places of Spanish music. The accelerando marked in M78 is significant. The figure spanning M85-86 should feel essentially the same as the first motive, re-presented in M87.

Sufficiently assiduous performers may notice a quote of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in M38. This is intentional. As the piece unfolded, I realised I was subconsciously modelling it after Stravinsky's "Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo". Rather than fight the parallels between the pieces, I rather decided to embrace them.

III. DUO A union of all the intervals employed in the first two movements, the third movement also synthesizes the chalumeau and clarion registers. This, however, should not be apparent at first. M1-4 should be played entirely in the chalumeau, and M5-10 entirely in the clarion. From this point forward, fingerings are left to the discretion of the player, although standard fingerings should generally be given preference. Note, however, that preferably NO altissimo fingerings should be employed: continue to use the alternate clarion fingerings for these high notes unless this is for some reason not possible. Throughout the movement, rhythmic precision is key to obtaining the correct “feel”. The only exception occurs in M13-16 (“A Little More Loosely”).

While you may continue to observe rhythms rigidly, a little push in the quintuplets and a little pull in the triplets may be more musically effective. Beginning in the pick-up to M32, be sure to differentiate between the clarion melody and the chalumeau accompaniment lines. ~Joe Clark, 31.01.13
