My life has been surrounded by the arts. My parents started collecting the work of Mexican and South American figure painters in the early nineties and then expanded their collection to include a number of painters and sculptors from around the US. They have several paintings by Hugo Chrosthwaite, a Mexican painter that paints heroic scenes and amazing figures in black and white. My parents were friends with the late Charlie Miller and collected a number of his paintings over the years. Charlie worked in mixed media and painted on anything he could find. For a while, he lived in an old building on the east edge of downtown San Diego. He found a bunch of old doctors prescriptions in the basement that were written in the fifties and sixties, primarily for stimulants and amphetamines. Most of the patients names on the prescriptions were women. Charlie pasted these prescriptions on a large piece of plywood and used them as a backdrop for a series of paintings about what life must have been during the fifties. One of these paintings was titled, "Watching Johnny Grow". I started drawing in 2011, painting shortly there after, and working in bronze as well. I can see how growing up around my family’s art collection has influenced my work. I currently tend to draw portraits and the female figure. I appreciate street art and tagging, so I try to capture that kind of energy into my art. I buy the biggest, least expensive roll of paper that I can find and build up layers of different mediums to thicken it. Most of my work is black and white. Initially, I  worked with pencil, but felt that my drawings were too flat and the process was slow. To get more contrast and speed, I started using white acrylic and charcoal. I also use spray paint and paint pens. I like to work big. I usually finish a painting in one to three days. I use structure lines to get the right body proportions and composition. These 'fast' lines and the process of layered paint gives the image energy. I also leave parts of the painting undeveloped with less detail. This helps create an illusion of depth. I also work with sculpture. I concentrate on how to get my three dimensional form off the ground gracefully and in unique ways. The sculptures are a mixture of the human form and architectural design. I use a combination of bronze, steel pencil rod, and any found objects that I can incorporate into the piece. My forte is the abstract figure.
