HENRY and HIS REFLECTION Based on an Aesop fable Story and Illustrations by Joseph DeSouza

O

ne day, a dog named Henry decided to go for a walk through his neighborhood. Henry didn’t it know at the time, but by the end of the day he would learn a valuable lesson.

2

When Henry passed by a butcher’s shop, he saw hanging in the window a delicious steak. Henry snuck in when a customer was leaving and was noticed immediately by the butcher. Henry grabbed whatever he could and ran for the door!

With the butcher chasing right behind him... Henry ran fast! He bolted down the sidewalk away from the butcher’s shop. He knew he had to find a safe quiet place where he could enjoy his bounty!

Henry passed by an alley where he thought he could be safe from the butcher. But in the alley there were three others dogs who saw the bone that he took from the butcher. They growled at him! Henry knew he had to get out of there fast or the other dogs would take his bone from him!

Henry ran away as fast as he could... he knew he was no match for the butcher, but other dogs chasing him were a different story! Henry ran the fastest he’s ever run in his life... he snuck down side streets and jumped over some fences. Henry eventually realized that he was safe... he came upon what appeared to be a thrift store.

Henry started to walk by the store and noticed another dog next to him! Henry was startled! He quickly turned and saw his reflection in a mirror, but Henry thought it was another dog! He growled and barked! The bone in his mouth fell to the ground... and seeing the bone in the mirror fall to the ground Henry bark and tried to grab it! His reflection tried to grab his bone too! This terrified him.... Henry took off!

While Henry was running again he thought, “Wow that was close!” He had had enough of being chased today... Henry just wanted to get home now. But in all the excitement of running away he forgot his bone. It was gone. Henry knew he couldn’t go back for it so he just headed home.

Henry was so tired from the days adventures. He laid there thinking of the bone he once had and then lost. If only he didn’t try to get the other bone in the mirror’s reflection... Henry learned that his greed cost him his bone. THE END.
