Maracaibo, also known as “la ciudad del sol amada� (The beloved land of the sun), is the capital of Zulia, Venezuela, a fun city state since its population is very cheerful; it is located in the northwest of the country. It also has a lake which flows directly to the Caribbean Sea. Due to the length of the lake, the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge was built, it connects two ends of Zulia state. Maracaibo is the largest economic center of the western Venezuelan oil industry because it is developed on the Lake of Maracaibo shores. The population of the city is approximately 1,495,200, which continues growing. It is the second-largest city in the country (after the national capital Caracas) and the capital of the state of Zulia Maracaibo, besides being a business city, has many tourist sites which are typical of the city as they are very old.

Touristic spots Casa de la capitulación (House of capitulation)

This beautiful and unique jewelry of civil colonial architecture, was built in the XVIII century by Inés Mancebo Zuloaga. However, its historical value is because there, Francisco Tomás Morales, the last spanish Captain General in Venezuela, after the Naval Battle of Lake, signed with the chiefs patriots in 1823 There are frames of Simon Bolivar, the signatories of the Act of Capitulation and General Francisco de Miranda. It also has a typically colonial furniture, and with chairs that were donated by former Colombian President Misael Pastrana Borrero, during his visit on July 24, 1973. It is said that in this house Simon Bolivar rested on one of his visits to Maracaibo. It is currently the place of the Academy of History of Zulia and the Bolivarian Society, and is also the meeting place of a group of women engaged in weaving the finest suns of Maracaibo during sunsets. 9

Teatro Baralt (Baralt Teathre)

The Great Baralt Theatre of Maracaibo was inaugurated on July 24, 1883, with a show called Zarzuela “Choza y Palacio” designed at that time for 400 people and performed by a group of girls from the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepción. In 1928 is requested and executed the demolition of the old theater and four years later in 1932, was inaugurated in the same corner of Venezuela and Urdaneta streets, the new Baralt theatre. This Theater from 1932 is the building of the current theater, which was closed for twelve years approximately; its reopening was achieved in 1998, when the Baralt theatre Foundation was created by the University of Zulia (LUZ) recorded in 1994. Since 1955 the Baralt Theater is an entity supervised by the University of Zulia and in November 1981 was declared as a National Monument of Venezuela becoming Cultural patrimony. 10


Touristic spots Today, the theater is designed to never close, with a solid, continuous and consistent program, dedicated to the public from Zulia, Venezuela and the entire world.

Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá

If Zulia has a characteristic symbol, is the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá or “La Chinita “, as it is known by the fervor of the people of Zulia. Originally was called the Church of San Juan de Dios, and was built in 1836 by the state president Vicente Pérez Soto, after consulting the priest José de Jesús Romero. Initially in 1686 which existed was a hut where San Juan de Dios was worshiped. Then became a hermitage and finally it was transform in a chapel before it was built in the current structure. The “Chinita’s cult” dates from 1709, when a grinding cocoa woman, on friday november 18, felt and saw a

Touristic spots lighted little wooden board image of the Virgin of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá, “La Chinita”. Inside, you can admire the small panel with the image of the Virgin painted in oil, the crown made of gold, and a collection of religious art in the XIX and middle XX century. The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá, is the busiest Catholic church of Zulia state in Venezuela, located in the center of the city of Maracaibo. A building dedicated to the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, patron saint of Zulia. The basilica has 3 warehouses and 2 towers, a high altar, a presbytery and numerous niches dedicated to other saints. It is a representative architectural work of the city of Maracaibo, is mentioned in songs like Gaitas, is also present in postcards, paintings, and others.

Convent San Francisco de Asis

Was the establishment of the Franciscan friars who arrived in Maracaibo in early 1600. The so humble chapel and convent had a privileged location, the lake reached its doors, (before filling), through 12


Touristic spots which the monks drew their supply. In 1891 was the first headquarters of the University of Zulia.

Originally built as a chapel and operated as such since 1583. In 1861 the parish priest José Antonio Rincón agreed with Governor José Antonio Serrano, the construction of a Gothic temple that would replace the old chapel. The construction of the church was made with contributions from the villagers. The work was completed in 1888.

Maracaibo’s Art Center Lia Bermúdez

The Maracaibo’s Arts Center Lia Bermúdez or Lia Bermúdez Art Center is the name given to a space that serves to theatrical performances as cultural center and exhibition center, also performed concerts, they hold workshops and guided tours. Was named as the Venezuelan sculptor and artist Lia Bermudez. It was created as a foundation in 1990 in what was originally a market town dating back to 1886. It was adapted and refurbished under the project of architect Joseph Esposito, and officially opened in 1993. Its maintenance and management is the responsibility of the regional government of Zulia state, under the guise of the foundation.

Vereda del Lago park

It is an excellent choice to pair with the largest reservoir of fresh water in South America, Lake of Maracaibo. Built on its banks, this park is the favorite of Maracaibo to practice outdoor sports, the contemplation of its wonderful natural environment and family enjoyment. His extensive fields covering 65 hectares of green areas, provides security services, sports fields, petting zoo, food kiosks, playgrounds, water park and the unspeakable breeze of the lake.

The Catatumbo Lightning is a unique weather phenomenon that appears in the Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela but mainly in the southern area of the lake and in the lower basin of the Catatumbo river, whence its name. The international organization of the Guinness World Records confirmed the award for the “region of Catatumbo Lightning�.

The General Rafaél Urdaneta Bridge

The General Rafaél Urdante bridge is a bridge across the narrowest part of Maracaibo’s Lake, in the Zulia State in northwestern Venezuela, and connects the city of Maracaibo with the rest of the country. It was named in honor of the General Rafaél Urdaneta, Zulian hero of the Independence of Venezuela. This bridge is one of the largest bridges in the world..

The car by seat (Carro por puesto in spanish) is part of the transportation system, this kind of transports usualy cover routes that buses (another type of public transportation) doesn’t cover. You may think that cannot be legal but you’re wrong, it is totally legal and its used by almost everyone in the city.

Gaita The Gaita Zuliana is an original musical genre of Zulia state in Venezuela. Today it is a genre that is related to Christmas in the country and in the communities of Venezuelans worldwide, there are versions on other languages like Spanish, French, Turkish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese among others. As a popular music genre, it is performed in the group consisting of men and women.

Chinita’s Fair Among the most important festivals, we could mention the fair of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá, this celebration occurs on November 18th each year, in honor of the patron saint; the Virgin of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá. On the eve of the 18th, the Maracaibo people or maracuchos make the well known Chinita’s fair, this is a celebration that attracts thousands of tourists, who enjoy and share the joy of the city. In those days, devotees sing serenades to the Virgin, to the beat of the drum, and other musical styles. It is a tradition to cover of lights some streets and avenues, and the amaneceres gaiteros, which are concerts throughout the city. It is tradition for the day of La Chinita, activities such as bullfighting, baseball games and agricultural and industrial exhibitions.

The Bolivar is the only currency that will be accepted as a medium of exchange in Venezuela. One Dolar, at official exchange rate, its equivalent to 55 BolĂ­vares. BolĂ­vares come in coins of 1 cent, 5 cents, 10 cents, 12,25 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents and one Bolivar. Also we have bills of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 bolivares.
