I have had the pleasure to watch the evolution of Joel Tremblay over the past two years. Joel worked in our office as a high school student primarily tasked with working drawings in Cad format. He was efficient, self motivated and hard working. He has an excellent grasp of utilizing the software and also the knowledge of basic building science. He takes direction well and became part of a productive team. Joel subsequently expressed an interest in attending a School of Architecture the next fall. His portfolio was excellent, varied and displayed his creative talents as well as his ability to think and analyze. His work gained him access to all schools for which he applied. Joel has returned to our firm to work his first work term after his initial year at the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture. His ability to work on technical drawings in Autocad has now been augmented by his 3D graphic and design abilities. He has been involved in completing packages for tender as well as conceptual design, client meetings and site review. I have no hesitation recommending Joel for work in any capacity in an architectural office or a design firm. His ability to draw, conceptualize and communicate will serve him well in his career.

The project seeks to address the lack of infrastructure towards the biking community in the Don Valley region. The high performance indoor bike facility “plugs’ into the existing biking trails and acts as a threshold to the rest of the biking network. The current situation of the trails are not viable because it requires users to change in their vehicles and carry heavy supplies. The facility provides users with not only year-round biking programs but with change rooms, water refill stations and areas of repose. Specific trails and locations in the Don Valley have been kept secret in order to maintain their existence, but by connecting them to a larger infrastructure it will sustain them and provide new points of discovery. The goal is to establish a “headquarters” for the diverse biking community in order to raise awareness of the current trail conditions and push the city to allow trail expansions.

THE APPALACHIAN TRAILS

The Appalachian Trail is the longest natural hiking trail in the world, approximately 2,200 miles long and crosses a total of 14 different States. The Appalachian Trail was conceived of by Benton Mackaye, a forester who wanted to connect the urban city dwellers with the wilderness and rural communities in the farther areas of the United States. In 1922, the director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission helped publicize the idea of a grand unifying trail. His partner, Myron Avery, took over and led the trail development toward becoming a hiking trail. Only 1% of the original trail exists as it did when it was first created. The representation of something abstract sparks wonder, and through the details it reveals knowledge and the presentation of logic. The design process of the community center took on a particular approach due to the fact that the site has no significant relationship to anything. Through a series of exercises superimposing program sizes, a field condition is created. This process leads to the development of figure ground elements and public/private spaces. Skateboarders and bikers have access throughout the entire site with endless opportunities and challenges. The community center offers the space and activities that the city of Cambridge desires.

Almost 100 years after his mysterious and untimely death, Thomson’s evocative paintings of the twisted pines, icy lakes and barren bedrock of Algonquin Park are embedded in the Canadian consciousness as definitive images of our rugged and unforgiving landscape. To help the gallery advance its mission as a regional art centre and a national cultural institution, we collaborated with staff and stakeholders to develop a feasibility study and conceptual design that more than doubles the size of the existing facility to 31,000 square feet.” -Moriyama & Teshima Architects

“For twenty-five years, Discovery Centre has opened the minds of young Nova Scotians to the possibilities of science and technology at their downtown Halifax facility. Now, in association with Barrie and Langille Architects, Moriyama & Teshima Architects are part of the relocation and transformation of this must-see destination scheduled to open in 2016. The Centre’s new home will be within the Turbine Hall (aka. Block ‘D’); the last vestige of the former Lower Water Street Power Generating Station. Recently the main buildings of the former power plant were converted into office headquarters for Nova Scotia Power. Now the last remaining turbine hall is set to be transformed by the Discovery Centre.” -Moriyama & Teshima Architects

Currently a work-in-progress, a proposal of a new Multi-use building for Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario. The goal of the project is to act as an extension of the existing college in addition to becoming a new point of arrival for incoming students. In order to help reinvigorate the campus, a large frame showcases the excitement of student life. Inspired by Northern Ontario forests, the facade acts as a familiar threshold to students who are coming from North-Eastern Ontario.

SOFA COMMUNICATIONS

Located at 123 McIntyre Street, North Bay, Ontario. The new Sofa Communications headquarters was a project in which I was primarily involved during my summer with Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler Architecture. My main task was to produce a set of construction drawings and details for permit. I coordinated with the Architect, Contractor and Client during the course of the project, making required alterations and ensuring quality control. The space has exposed brick walls and heavy timber columns, which were left as-is to keep the rustic look and implement a modern feel.

The Cat Island Chain Beneficial Project is an ongoing revitalization project located north of the Green Bay harbor and is the current location of sediment deposition from the shipping channel dredging process. The original island was destroyed by wave erosion in 1975 and completely submerged in 2012. The overall goal of the symposium was to explore various methods of sediment deposition and systems that could establish a successful and habitable ecology for the future. The proposal is to introduce a pattern of gabion baskets in a series of groups that “direct” and “trap” sediment. The idea is that these obstacles will interact with the sediment flow creating berms and pools. This effect would create a diverse landscape typography and allow for a variety of fauna and flora to flourish. in collaboration with Stefan Berry
