June 7, 2015. To Whom It May Concern:

Re: Joel Tremblay Joel joined us for a 4-month work term from January to April 2015.

June 2015. His design and drafting skills, quality and speed of work, attitude and personality, surpassed our 7, expectations. He brought existing skills and recent experiences to bear on new projects and presentation material, he learned new programs and techniques when required, and he never hesitated to put in the To hours required Whom IttoMay produce excellent results, augmenting and improving some of our practices. He was in high demand by the end of his work term.

Concern:

Joel demonstrated a real interest in both the projects themselves and the context in which these projects were developed - and brought his own questions and insights to the work. Re: Joel Tremblay Joel actively seeks new tasks, contributes ideas at appropriate junctures and completes assigned work on schedule.

Our office has participated in the University of Waterloo’s Co-op program for several years now, employing perhaps a dozen students over that time. His design and Joel may be the best fit we’ve ever had. Sincerely, The Hicks Partnership Inc.

PORTABLE ZERO

A Low Carbon portable multi-use room that achieves a very high level of amenities along with extreme efficiency in the use of resources. Reclaimed shipping containers are brought back to life and become the structure. Using containers allows the design to be portable as it can be divided into shippable components. The design revolves around Passive Heating and Cooling, allowing for natural ventilation, thermal massing and solar energy gain. The project is flexible for possibility to incorporate new technology such as TESLA, high end solar panels and water processing equipment.

MODERN LOFTS

| Selected for exhibition at school of Architecture (2014)

Medium density apartment building designed on conventional sized lots. Located at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue West and Caledonia Road in Toronto. As more of the population migrates to the city, demand for urban apartments will explode. The design is to set a template for future development as the district of St. Clair grows. The ten storey building houses 16 apartments, Bicycle storage, Bicycle store, Mechanics lounge and an outdoor terrace. The intention is to anticipate the changes that the area will face when people become more dependant on urban environments.

COMMUNITY CENTRE

massing model | selected for exhibition at Cambridge City Hall (2015)

The representation of something abstract sparks wonder, and through the details it reveals knowledge and the presentation of logic. The basis of the community centre is to show society that skateboarders and bmxers are in fact not disrespectful, they simply need a place to do their thing. Through a series of exercises superimposing program sizes, a field conditions is created. This process leads to the development of figure ground elements and public/private spaces. The building fits “loosely on the site in order to be more dynamic with its occupant. The community centre offers the public the spaces and activities that the city of Cambridge desires.

THE APPALACHIAN TRAILS

base map | Case study in collaboration with Shabaan Khokhar

The Appalachian Trail was conceived by Benton Mackaye, a forester who wanted to connect the urban city dwellers with the wilderness and rural communities in the farther areas of the United States. The Appalachian Trail is now approximately 2,200 miles long from it’s original intended length of 1,200 miles. The trail is meant to be it’s own type of organism as it exists regardless of anyone else maintaining it and it’s ever changing qualities. Only 1% of the original trail exists as it did when it was first created. It is separated from society enough to be considered nature but is close enough for one to still be comforted by the existence of other humans.

JUMPS, TRAILS & NODES

base map | In collaboration with Shabaan Khokhar

The creation of high activity nodes connect existing routes and draw attention to key points in the Don Valley through the different types of biking. Specific trails and locations in the Don have been kept secret in order to maintain their existence, but by connecting them to a larger infrastructure will sustain and provide new points of discovery, primarily for the average and avid bikers. These Nodes sustain themselves through natural energy and can provide support as emergency aide in relatively remote situations. Each site is designed specifically for its adjacent context providing maximum eficiency. The sites can act as checkpoints along the Don, providing users with water and reststops.

SOFA COMMUNICATIONS

Located at 123 McIntyre Street, North Bay, Ontario. The new Sofa Communications office was a project which I was majorly involved during my summer with Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler Architecture. My main task was to produce a set of construction drawings and details for permit. I coordinated heavily with the Architect, Contractor and Client during the course of the project, making required alterations and ensuring quality control. The space has exposed brick walls and heavy timber columns, which were left as-is to keep the rustic look and implement a modern feel.

CANADORE COLLEGE

Currently a work-in-progress, a proposal for a new Multi-use building for Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario. I was commissioned by Evans Bertrand Hill Wheeler Architecture to produce a 3D model and perspectives. I coordinated with the Architect and Vice Director of Canaodre College during my winter workterm. As there is no current drawings, there was alot of design liberty on my part. The main points of the project are to have a high-end building which would create a welcoming environment for aboriginal students and showcase student life. The proposed building is to tie into the existing college connecting with the rest of the program. Inspired by Northern Ontario forests, the facade acts as a familiar threshold to students who are coming from North-Eastern Ontario.

PERSONAL WORK

The following is a sample of some of my drawings, art and photographs. I enjoy documenting my travels and discoveries as I like to think of the camera as a tool to capture how “I see things”. When a camera isn’t handy, I usually have a sketchbook and pen on me. On my spare time, I enjoy riding my bike and doing tricks. Riding a bike in a urban setting allows you to look at the built environment differently, where an obstacle can become an opportunity. I am a self taught bicycle mechanic, I enjoy taking things apart, cleaning them and putting them back together.
