A Time A Purpose For Everything
June 30,2024
“I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psa 34:1)
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace” (Ecc 2:1-8).
Though born under the curse of sin, and therefore mortal, man longs for immortality. That men are able to enjoy the fruits of their labors, is a testimony of God’s grace and favor; however, all that men build apart from God (wealth, fame, legacies, buildings, monuments) is temporal and passing. Only what God has ordered and blessed will endure. “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear [revere; be afraid] before him” (Ecc 3:12-14).
“Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou? Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment. Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be (Ecc 8:4-7)?
He teaches us a profound spiritual truth that there is a time to do the things we do in our every day life. In other words, we should not be indiscrete in the way we do things. There is a time to do things if we want to get the best results. Planting is wonderful, but there is a time not to plant but to pluck up. It is our responsibility to know which is which.
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren” (Rom 8:26-29).
Wisdom teaches us what we ought to do at every given point in time. Did you ever wonder why Jesus put His hands on some people to heal them and spoke to others? It is not random. Imagine if He was putting His hands on everyone, since God had already healed someone before He laid His hands on them. Sadly, many of us walk with God this way. In our immaturity, we fail to know what has to be done at what time in our lives, whether financial, family, ministry, etc.

We have not really understood the fact that time is precious and it is never coming back. What is spent can never be utilized again. I have understood that Twitter, FB, Mobile-devices and Notebooks, has actually limited our freedom. If some people call us or sends us a message, and we do not reply at once, we would be in serious trouble. The feeling of always being available, is killing our peace of mind.
We should make the best use of time, avoid wasting it and always remain conscious of the fact that loss of even a moment is a great loss. Some may not be quite aware of the true value of time, but it is for everyone to know that time has remarkably changed fortunes of individuals and nations. History testifies the real worth of time:
Whatever life may send your way make the best of it. Don't waste your time and energy worrying about it. Instead, find a way to do something about it. Learn from it, adjust to it, be strong, be flexible and be your best in every situation.
“Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is” (Eph 5:14-17).
“Our lives are going to be summarized by a dash. This dash is going to be found in our epitaphs in the future. This is how people are going to remember us by. All of us are going to die that’s for sure the question is how are we going to spend our few, short and limited time here on earth? My hope is that you will have that sense of urgency and importance about time. My prayer is like that of Moses’ that God will teach us to number our days so that we may learn to live this life wisely”.
We are not guaranteed the amount of time that we have here on earth. As Christ followers we are told to keep ourselves holy (set apart): “for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.'” (1 Pet. 1:16) In order for us to walk in wisdom we must begin by walking wisely, that is, carefully and deliberately. As we walk with precise steps we learn to walk not as fools but as wise men and women. Wisdom is having a right perspective, that is, a right view of God, self, and sin. The next verse in our text then tells us that as we walk in wisdom we must redeem the time because the days are evil. “See then that you walk circumspectly [wisely], not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” (Eph. 5:15-16)
