Some 2,000 years ago, Israelites gathered in Jerusalem when the day of Pentecost was fully come and were empowered by the Holy Ghost as promised. Ffty days after His Resurrection, Jesus sent the Comforter; and His followers experienced the first New Covenant Pentecost. Jesus began to revive God’s work under His New Covenant. Today, we too can receive empowerment of the Holy Ghost to walk in His truths if we will ask Him (Joh 14:16-26; 15:26: 16:7; Her 31:31-33; 1Cor14:2). We need this empowerment so that we can clearly hear the Father’s voice as He whispers in our ear, “This is the way, walk ye in it” (Isa 30-21).
I certainly don’t know the hearts of people, but I do my own heart cry, and that it cries for revival. But for this to happen “the various scaffolds of religiosity” must come down, and “the pulpits” must stop “dramatizing the church of Jesus Christ,” with their “questionable denominational dogma.” God’s church can be revived, if the people of God would “truly wail,” and “mournfully” call for God to, “... revive us again: that His people may rejoice in Him” – Psalm 85:6. And throughout the land, there must come a deep “perpetual,” “feverish,” “groan” and “cry” that won’t be satisfied “apart from God’s presence in holy revival”.
“A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth. O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy. God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise” (Hab 3:1-3).
“Revive Thy work, O Lord, Thy mighty arm make bare; Speak with the voice that wakes the dead, And make Thy people hear.
Revive Thy work, O Lord, Disturb this sleep of death; Quicken the smold'ring embers now By Thine almighty breath. Revive Thy work, O Lord, Create soul-thirst for Thee; And hungering for the Bread of Life O may our spirits be.
Revive Thy work, O Lord, Exalt Thy precious Name; And, by the Holy Ghost, our love For Thee and Thine inflame.
Revive Thy work, O Lord, Give Pentecostal showers; The glory shall be all Thine own, The blessing, Lord, be ours”. ~ Arthur Henry Brown ~
The word prayer seems used here for an act of devotion. The Lord would revive his work among the people in the midst of the years of adversity. This may be applied to every season when the church, or believers, suffer under afflictions and trials. Mercy is what we must flee to for refuge, and rely upon as our only plea. We must not say, Remember our merit, but, Lord, remember thy own mercy.
Sometimes the need of revival is outwardly apparent. Then sometimes the need of revival is entirely known to God only. There may be no outward lapse, there may be no open inconsistency, and there may be no flagrant wrongdoing whatever. Character and conduct may be as blameless as ever. Yet there may be a failing spiritual appetite notwithstanding, a want of communion with the Well-Beloved: a neglect of private prayer, a neglect of the study of the Word of God, a neglect of all the duties of personal soul-culture. In such case, although there may
be no outward appearance of the failure, that will come unless there be an inward cry for revival.
The work of revival is always God’s work. If we are to be what we ought to be, if love is to be rekindled in our hearts, if power is to be given us for service, if we are to follow on to know the Lord, if grace and peace are to be multiplied to us through the knowledge of God, and of Christ Jesus our Lord – it will be because God Himself is at work in our lives. He is working in you “both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13).
Revival means drawing near to God with the expectation of Him drawing near to us. (Isa 55:6-7) When a cry for revival comes, God's people will hunger and cry for righteousness, worship and service in His name. When a cry for revival comes, those who have drifted away will be drawn to Jesus by the Father. When a cry for revival comes, people who have wandered away to the far country will return to the Father's House. When a cry for revival comes, serving God will not wear us out but will lift us up. When a cry for revival comes, His name will be exalted and His people filled with His Spirit.
We will never receive a blessing from God that we are not pursuing. Revival is intentional. Receiving from God comes through deep desire for more of Him. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Mt 7:7)
Let our hearts cry for revival to theLord, partaking of His goodness as He has called us to His banquet table. We pray our refreshing in the Lord, and let the Spirit have his way to God be the glory. Amen.
