“LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress” (Psa 10:17-18).
“At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.” (Mat 11:25).
“And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumblingblock out of the way of my people. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made” (Isa 57:14-16).
“I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs. The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God. For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners” (Psa 69:30-33).
“Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O LORD. Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and
truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies” (Psa 25:6-10).
“And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard; Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD” (2Ch 34:26-27).
Pride sends a person the wrong way, while humility accompanies a person in the right direction. Pride blinds people to eventually make their way to hell with the devil, while humility sets a heart on course with Christ to heaven. Humility is a spiritual sherpa who can be totally trusted and leads to life, but pride is a deceptive guide who leads to death. Pride leads to moral poverty, while humility leads to the riches of God’s grace. A humble person desires God’s way to be her way.
Has your faith remained humble and childlike? Or, have you become wise in your own eyes with no need for others? An isolated faith is set up for failure, but a faith engaged in community with other Jesus followers is set up for success. Alone we can not atone for our sin, so alone we cannot keep ourselves from sin. We need Jesus and Jesus lovers to save us from our sins and to save us from ourselves. A humble heart is not childish, but childlike in its total trust in Christ.
“Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (Jas 4:5-10).

The world we live in teaches us to be great at all things, be above the competition, celebrate our greatness with tweets, posts, and conversations that let everyone know of our achievements. C.S. Lewis once said, “A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
In the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi, he wanted them to know the value of humility and being a true servant…“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” He knew that pride and selfishness were not the character of God but, rather, that a true follower of Jesus was to clothe themselves in humility (Colossians 3:12). Jesus Christ had every opportunity to have a “look at me” mentality, to grasp at status, power, and authority, but instead, he wanted others to understand the value he placed in and on them…he wanted them to understand that the way up is actually down.
Humility is not intended for someone to belittle themselves or have disparaging thoughts about who they are. There’s a great adage about what humility actually means and what it doesn’t…it’s not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. A humble person will not only honor others but also see that the needs of others are just as real, as important, as worthwhile as their own.
Being humble for most people brings to mind a form of weakness. If someone practices humility, it means they’re not a “go-getter” and don’t care about performance or working hard. It’s the weak one who is humble and is dependent on someone else (hopefully you sense my sarcasm). Why do you suppose the Bible has so much to say about being humble? Maybe we’ve got it all wrong and the one who practices humility is actually the strong one?
“The more humble a man is before God, the more he will be exalted, the more humble he is before man, the more he will get rode roughshod”.
~ Josh Billings ~“A humble man can do great things with an uncommon perfection because he is no longer concerned about accidentals, like his own interests and his own reputation, and therefore he no longer needs to waste his efforts in defending them”.
“If you are yourself at peace, then there is at least some peace in the world. Then share your peace with everyone, and everyone will be at peace”.
~ Thomas Merton ~“Teach self-denial and make its practice pleasure, and you can create for the world a destiny more sublime that ever issued from the brain of the wildest dreamer”.
~ Sir Walter Scott ~"Being humble means recognizing that we are not on earth to see how important we can become, but to see how much difference we can make in the lives of others”.
~ Gordon B. Hinckley ~Simplicity and Humility
I've found we humans, have two ways, in which we each live out our days. Today's world is in such a craze, our best, we all, must give...
Yes, there are they who've chosen hope and service, and with this they cope. They've never seen that slipp'ry slope upon which many live...
No, it is not as if they've not for fun in those wrong places sought, but they've not let their souls be bought by he who claims all sins...
If humble, simple lives you lead, and do to each a simple deed and live as if you've known no greed, so you shall live again…
If there are a “chosen few” then I am not one of them, if an “elect,” well then I have not been elected. I am one who is knocking at the door. I am one whose foot is on the bottom rung. But I know that Heaven’s bottom rung is Heaven though the ladder is standing on the earth where I work by day and at night sleep with my head upon a stone.
