Residential led with mixed-use regenerates an under-utilised site situated in Camberwell Road near to Vauxhall Rail Station for Hadley Property Group. The new residential led regeneration gives 166, 1-4 bedroom, 10% wheelchair accessible, mixed-tenure units, with 1,900m2 of flexible commercial space at ground floor. In total, 40% of the homes are affordable. The site has excellent walkability, and access to public transport PTAL (Public Transport Assessment Level) 6a. Aspiration has been to revitalise and repair current crime inhabited area, the new site will become an inviting urban community. Arranged of four perimeter 4-8 storey, multi-core volumes around central communal landscaped amenity with permeable access, there are typically three apartments per floor, per core with cycles (total 219) and refuse arranged within each block. 0% parking except for wheelchair units. Designed to BREEAM Excellent; Code 4 (CfSH); London Housing Design Guide; Lifetime Homes; and, SELHP (South East London Housing Partnership) wheelchair guide, with Planning approval from Southwark Council, following Southwark’s Design Review Panel and GLA consultation. The design strategy has several inherent benefits: avoidance of long internal corridors, greater efficiency and the majority of apartments are dual aspect (80%), living spaces balcony private amenity overlooking the communal .... landscaped garden. 5

Materials are restricted to a simple, good quality, durable palette. Brick is a material found abundantly within the local vernacular and have varied the texture of the brickwork at ground level to accentuate the public areas of the building as distinct from the residences above. Structure uses concrete slab at grade and upper floors with internal concrete columns, enveloped by cavity wall block/brick facing construction. Whole building heating & electrical demand is environmentally served by generating on-site primary energy using a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system, supplemented by renewable energy solar photovoltaic panels and provision of electrical car charging points. Worked in three person team post planning for tender drawing production, collaborating with project manager, landscape architect, structural engineer, mechanical & electrical engineer and fire engineer.

584 Green Lanes Harringay, LB of Haringey ∙ MAA Architects Ltd.
New residential led regeneration of under-utilised site (85m x 55m), located in an urban dense environment on busy arterial street Green Lanes near to Finsbury Park in North London for Hadley Property Group. Not only will this building revitalise and contribute good quality housing towards a targeted area for regeneration, but will also give a ground floor, 1,000m2 NHS secondary care facility for ten GP’s to serve 15,000 patients per year. The vision is to create a high density scheme, with enhanced public realm using tree planting, and new homezone along Colina Mews. Current scheme proposes 145, 1-4 bedroom units. In total, 20% of the homes are affordable. Multiple studies have explored viability increasing to 160 units and reducing to 125 units with 3B5P wheelchair accessible maisonettes. Arranged in four perimeter 4-8 storey, multi-core volumes around a central communal landscaped amenity rising in height towards Green Lanes, and more domestic in character with top floor setback units along Colina Road and Colina Mews. Residential accommodation is arranged to provide two and three-storey family dwellings at the base of the development with one, two bedroom apartments in the upper levels. 58% of the units are dual aspect with typically 4-5 apartments accessed per floor per core achieving 268 dwellings per hectare with 0% parking except for wheelchair units. Bin and cycle stores are distributed around cores and accessible within 25m travel distances from street.

The project is designed to London Housing Design Guide; Lifetime Homes and targeted to achieve BREEAM excellent, with three pre-applications; quality review panel; and, public consultation to guide the design. I collaborated at planning stage in a 3 person team and coordinated a mix of consultant design development including rights of light, mechanical & electrical, sustainability, landscape and flood risk input to the design, with CDM sub-consultant appointed to discharge principal designer duties. This has been a good opportunity to lead the first office BIM project in Aecosim. Open plan living study: Modified apartment layouts to engage with the pocket living model, entering the unit to the living/kitchen/dining and reducing designated hall space. .... 11

Project led post planning to completion of high spec alterations & extension to Regency townhouse located in Fulham, near to Chelsea Football Stadium for Berkeley Group Chief Executive Rob Perrins. Scheme gives contemporary elements to a series of entertaining spaces across 4 storeys. Primary living is arranged at ground floor and lower ground, with bedrooms are accessed at upper levels. New extensions comprise i. Ground floor lean-to portion for Kitchen/Dining with aluminium framed roof lantern and bifold doors which open onto garden amenity; ii. Front lightwell excavating existing infill and providing separate access/ means of escape; and, iii. Upper level infill for bedroom, en-suite and dressing room with skylight.
Materials blend in with the surrounding setting using lead feature detail above main entrance, light well paving to stair, light brickwork for lean-to extension and a majority of white render to back elevation portion to match original stucco. Prepared building control, tender, and construction issue production drawings, collaborating with project manager, quantity surveyor, structure engineer, mechanical & electrical engineer, and specialist fitters. Main Contractor began on-site in mid 2015 for 8-month programme and attended weekly site visits to inspect progress and coordinate specialist fitters to install elements including a bespoke steel stair with integrated wine rack, and resolved party issue to front railings with both adjoining neighbouring properties.

In my time at Architecture and Design (Aalborg University), I worked with a series of different design projects with an emphasis on group work, utilising both analog and digital tool processes. The Danish school of architecture encourages design projects to integrate a phenomenological approach to place in the Nordic tradition, as well as designing with excellent environmental qualities, such as natural light, air quality and thermal comfort, to Passive house standard. Nørvasund School Aalborg University, Denmark - 4. Sem. ∙ Ålesund, Norway
The Nørvasund school is a competition entry for a new primary school situated in the coastal city of Ålesund, with 40,000 inhabitants amongst the Sunnmore Alps in the Vestland region of Norway. The new educational facility provides for 560 students through years 1-7 with an enhanced department of students with physical and mental learning difficulties; 74 teachers; 24 assistants and access for communal activities within the locality, such as after school events. The vision is to create an excellent learning environment, whilst rooting within the locality to enable student development. The spatial program is divided into 3 levels: i. Communal; ii. Domain; and, iii. Individual. Iterative arrangement studies evoked a ’star’ shaped single volume with a spectacular communal atrium at the heart of the plan, which acts as a permeable hub for the school with a welcoming main entrance from the north. Student years 1-4, 5-7, & enhanced departments are organised into individual domains giving south facing views of the Sunnmore Alps, each has a secondary atrium with access to landscaped playspace and 2 storeys of classrooms as a flexible, open/closed pedagogic platform. Circulation creates an inviting ‘open-loop’ that promotes a sense of openness and connects to the communal atrium by seamless timber walkway bridges, covered in domain specific colours to enable identity. The importance of an educational building called for a structure of grand quality that would reflect the values and aspiration for the school. Glulam timber roof beams and CLT (cross laminated timber) wall panels on concrete slab at grade, are wrapped in a highly insulated thermal ....envelope designed to passively optimise quality daylight using IES and Ecotect.

‘Zero-energy’ multi-housing Aalborg University, Denmark - 2 Sem. ∙ Central Aalborg, Denmark
Dense multi-housing regeneration scheme for neglected site in central Aalborg, Denmark’s third largest city with 100,000 inhabitants. The site has excellent walkability/access to public transport, and parallel to Jyllandsgade; a main traffic artery of ambient hospital, police, & fire civic services. The new multi-housing gives 142 multiple configuration 2-3 bedroom units, 70-110m2 with 220 dwellings per hectare for a multi-generation community of 500 occupants. The vision is to densify with dignity; creating multi-housing within the heart of the city that performs environmentally to ‘Passive House’ standard, ‘zero energy’ using on-site primary energy from renewable systems, whilst associating qualities of living in the natural landscape. The multi-housing is arranged in a 10 storey single volume set back from Jyllandsgade for enhanced qualities of health: quiet; air quality, uniformly south-facing exposure with generous private amenity & views, whilst respecting rights of light to neighbouring 6-storey buildings. The landscape immerses the entire site in green space and encourages biodiverse habitat with semi-public spaces, and features stormwater retention and urban drainage. By combining these programs and housing types, the new site will become a central hub of urban activity, underground parking, and revitalises the site and creates a building that is activated from all sides. Passivhaus Planning Package (PhPP) was used as a key design tool to achieve an appropriately south glazed, thermally airtight envelope, utilising MVHR (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery). Zero energy is achieved by implementing renewable on-site primary energy with over 2,000m2 of solar ....photovoltaic panels.

Dwelling in the dunes AalborgUniversity, Aalborg University, Denmark Denmark - 2 Sem. - 2 Sem. ∙ Hantsholm ∙ Hantsholm, Coast, Denmark Denmark
This dwelling is specifically for an ornithologist amidst an ever changing natural landscape within close proximity of an ample array of bird species, located on North Jutland’s west coast near to the town of Hantsholm. Amongst the surrounding coast line, brutal concrete bunkers are retained from the nazi occupation of Denmark with hard striking lines contrasting the landscape’s more natural form. The vision is to enable a high quality space to observe the natural environment’s flora and fauna, whilst phenomenologically in chord with the natural landscape’s sand dunes, ocean and wind. The concept is to form a transition of work and living, whilst enabling a wide panorama to study wildlife throughout the changing seasons. Arranged in two, passively oriented, compact buildings on a raised terrace. This interaction with nature evokes a sensual approach through a rich dialog with the genius loci of its place. The structure uses pile foundations with a concrete retaining wall to anchor the dwelling to its landscape. A glulam superstructure, clad in a copper envelope shields west facing wind exposure. The interior consists of simple, durable, light materials of spruce flooring/furniture and hearth next to a modest kitchen. Laser cut model was exhibited at the Utzon Centre, Aalborg.

THE PROPOSED SITE FOR THE ORNITHOLOGIST’S SHELTER IS LOCATED ON THE WEST COAST OF HANSTHOLM IN NORTHERN JUTLAND. THIS PLACEMENT IS LESS EXPOSED AND GAINS A MORE EMBEDDED STANCE IN RELATION TO ITS CONTEXT - WHICH IS LESS IMPOSING AND MORE COMPLIMENTARY. THE ORIENTATION GAINS APPROPRIATE QUALITIES OF DAYLIGHT AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE NORTH JUTLAND LANDSCAPE FOR THE APPLICATION OF AN ORNITHOLOGIST.
ARCHITECTURE IS A CONSTANT RESPONSE TO THE EVER CHANGING NEEDS OF PEOPLE. IN THE APPLICATION OF THE 21ST CENTURY THE PRIORITY MUST BE SEEN TO BE SUSTAINABILITY. TO MY MIND THE APPROACH FOR A BUILDING TO BE CONSIDERED SUSTAINABLE IN TERMS OF TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS IS VERY IMPORTANT, HOWEVER REMAINS A SINGLE ASPECT OF A BUILDING BEING ABLE TO BE CONSIDERED SUSTAINABLE.
THE LANDSCAPE IS EVER CHANGING, WHEREBY THE CHARACTERISTIC SAND DUNES, OCEAN AND WIND CREATE A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE. AS AN ABUNDANT SOURCE OF BIRD HABITATION, THE BEACH ACCOMMODATES SEAGULLS, WHEREAS IN AMONGST THE SAND DUNES LARGER BIRDS SUCH AS SPURVES’ HABITATE. FURTHERMORE AMONGST THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT, BRUTAL NAZI-GERMANY BUNKERS ARE RETAINED FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR WITH HARD STRIKING LINES CONTRASTING THE LANDSCAPE’S MORE NATURAL FORM – THEREFORE PROVIDING AN ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE BY WHICH TO RELATE TO FOR THE ORNITHOLOGIST’S SHELTER.

A CORE DESIGN IDEA IS TO ALLOW THE USER TO MAINTAIN A SENSE OF TRANSITION, WHEREBY SEPARATING WORK FROM RELAXING BY INCORPORATING 2 BUILDINGS, JOINED BY A CENTRAL TERRACE. THIS IS INTENDED TO ENGAGE THE ORNITHOLOGIST WITH BOTH BUILDINGS. WE BELIEVE THIS TO BE APPROPRIATE – HOWEVER MUST BE MINDFUL NOT TO OVER FRAGMENT THE DESIGN INTO 3 OR 4 CORES. THE DESIGN EMPOWERS THE ORNITHOLOGIST TO STUDY HIS PASSION FOR BIRDS, TRAVELLING TO HANSTHOLM DURING THE DIFFERENT SEASONS, DOCUMENTING HIS RECORDED DATA. THIS INTERACTION WITH NATURE EVOKES A SENSE OF CALMNESS AND A CHANGE OF SETTING TO RELAX WITH A COMPANION AND WORK.

EXCURSIONS North America ∙ Scandinavia ∙ Japan
I took part from August 2012 to August 2013 in international excursions to natural and urban landscapes, within 3 continents. The motivation behind this programme has been to further experience, and understand architectural processes in different cultures. Key highlights have been visiting many of Alvar Aalto’s buildings in Finland, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright works in North America.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN 14th March 2016 Re: Joseph Langman Joseph Langman was employed in the capacity of Architect at Matthew Allchurch Architects Ltd from 3 rd November 2014 to 11th March 2016. During his time at MAA, Joseph worked on the following projects: Camberwell Road 152 residential units/A1/B1/live-work/C3 Stages 1 – 4 Maxwell Road Conversion and extension of residential dwelling Stages 4 – 7 Green Lanes 145 residential units/D1 Stages 1 – 3 Joseph was the New London Architecture office champion and co-ordinated the practice’s membership to the organisation and attendance at NLA events and seminars. He was also CDM champion and was responsible for keeping up to date with CDM Regulation changes and informing members of the team of the current regulations.
