MUSEO DELLA CITTA’ 2014 / 12
Roma, Italy / Design Studio 4A
Partners with Kate Holbrook-Smith: Experiencing the Museo della Citta’ is done through the act of exploration, breaking away from the conventional idea of amuseum. Museo della Citta’ is a self-guided investigation of objects and stories all related to the Eternal City. Each of the main exhibition spaces have been made into an autonomous pavilions. These pavilions are solely connected by a circulation spine grafted into the Aurelian Wall and a skeletal trellis system attaching itself to the exhibitions allowing for passage below, within, and on top of the exhibition pavilions. PORTA MAGGIORE - consolidated transit hub + public plaza - rejuvenation of Classical artifacts,
excavation and preservation Public space is dispersed throughout the museumcontinued making it permeable and easily accessible to both tourists and residents of Rome. of ruins. The lower level contains museum program, public archival spaces, public cafes, and restaurants to create a vibrate destination. While rooftop terraces inhabit the space above the pavilions.
ECOLOGUES - wild nature, the return of an underutilized urban area to a space which awkens the visitors’ sensitivity to landscape and nature. - a lower and upper path are provided, one allowing for an immersive experience, the other an experience based on observation.
AMPITHEATER
COMMUNITY GARDEN PLAZA
GEORGICS - cultivation zone, creates a productive urban landscape and acknowledges the former use of the area during the period of dishabitos. - the primary path of circulation are raised to separate pedestrian circulation from the main arterial road. TEMPORARY EXHIBIT
‘THIRD NATURE’ - a series of formal gardens where the museum programme and landscape work as one. - diverging paths, upper and lower, lead visitors through the park and museum allowing for the exhibitions to become a sequence of discovery and reflection upon observation.

Aurelian Green House 2014 / 09
Roma, Italy / Design Studio 4A
The Botanist house aims in creating green pathways stimulated by a landscaping artist. The neighborhood within the peripheries of the slaughterhouse and pyramid of Caius are fragmented with busy streets, winding roads, railways, and poorly maintained paths which make pedestrian progression difficult. This artist residence aims to act as a remedy for these issues where a botanist would take a yearly term acting as the green keeper for newly created trails. The artist residence takes the form of a greenhouse allowing experiments and plant germination to take place in the botanists’ own residence. The form is split in three where the central volume raises at hollowed three face tower to create a semi-public courtyard. The two other volumes physically attach to the Aurelian Wall on one face making the wall become a tangent part of the residence.

Experiencing a Unified Korea 2013 / 12
DMZ, Korea / Competition ELective 3B
Parners with Emi Guo: Envisioning a unified Korea puts into question the future of the DMZ. Our project proposes preserving the majority of the zone as a wildlife refuge by maintaining the area as a national park, circumventing the need to deal with over one million land mines scattered within the area. As the old border breaks down and connections are created between the major cities in the north and south, hiking trails can be strategically located to allow visitors inside the nature reserve. In the first few years after unification, one trail is constructed to connect the north and south through the DMZ. Along this trail are three types of observation platforms that create different vantage points in which visitors can stop and look out across the landscape. An elevated platform, a cantilevered platform, and a step platform. Each platform acts as a place of repose along the hike to allow the hiker to reflect on where they are.

Chair for raddison and grossliers 2013 / 12
Toronto, Ontario / Structures 3B
Partners with Sam Wilman: Precedents came from the construction and design of wood frame canoes. These canoes are light durable and can be made from local materials allowing construction to not be impended by industrial machines. We knew right away we wantedthe chair to consist of a shell of wood constructed in a way that is a nod to a canoe hull. We also played with poles as legs in homage to canoe paddles. The foundation of the chair was easily birthed, and the majority of design time was spent fine tuning that image. We tailored scales specifically to our bodies and came up with several iterations for the rib scheme, individual connections and the hinge that connects the two shells.

Toronto Wetlands 2013 / 12
Toronto, Ontario / Design Studio 3b
Replacing the Billy Bishop Airport, the Urban Wetland Park stretches across the entire site making use of pre-existing parameters and functions. Runways act as Promenades for park functions and containment centers for Wetland Management and Growth. The site predominately incorporates endangered species from the heavily diminished wetlands in Lake Ontario. Water levels are controlled separately from the lake, recreating preindustrial fluctuation which is crucial in maintaining the fragile ecosystem.

A new BIXI system featuring Canoes (CIXI) and Kayaks (KIXI) allow the general population to experience a park like never before. Once training is completed on site, the canoes can be checked out with a single swipe. The entire Toronto Islands and GTA coast line becomes a new pleasure route with BIXI stations located strategically throughout the area. Barges act as the support nodes for the site, due to the final characteristics of the park, floating adaptable structures are needed to support public functions. Barges can focus on single locations for events and spread across the Toronto Islands for general usage. The Urban Wetland Park is meant to inform the public about the destruction of the Great Lakes Wetland and how needed it is for the vitality of the region.

Toronto, Ontario / Design Studio 3A
Stacked truss volumes surround the Wellesley Performance hall containing necessary functions as well creating a signature faรงade design with the visible trusses. A second outdoor theatre space located on top of the trusses is accessible by a large interactive interior pathway that loops through the trusses allowing private space visible to the public. In order to diffuse the boundary of theatre, the main fly tower has the ability to lift above grade which can allow the theatre space to extend outdoors with sets or audience seating.

YMCA CASE STUDY 2013 / 02
Toronto, Ontario / Design Studio 3A Illustrating how a building functions is a difficult task, especially when the main design theme needs to be incorporated into the illustration. For the YMCA Building case study, drawings needed to incorporate large cylindrical corridors that act as arteries within the building. For the section below, I sliced the building directly through the corridors showing connections with main public functions and how the corridors allow views of the users within the building.

PORTLAND CREMATORY / CEMETERY 2012 / 08
Toronto, Ontario / Design Studio 2B
Combining a botanical garden and cemetery, a project designed to restore and eventually create a wildlife park for the endangered Carolinian forest in southern Ontario. Trees planted on top of cremated remains act as tombstones while site maintenance would gradually reduce allowing the site to deteriorate over time. Forest growth would slowly increase as the site deteriorates, recreating a forest after 150 years. Preservation of historical buildings for ceremonial functions and grinding existing concrete pads will create gabion baskets. Stacked gabion baskets will create proper root depths for trees due to the contamination of the existing Portland soil.

GUOVSSAHASAH HOTEL 2012 / 04
Rovaniemi, Finland / Arch Medium International Competition Sami People, indigenous to Finland bless the aurora borealis with the name guovssahasah. Guovssahasah refers to an audible light; a term so profound it symbolizes an orchestra of the night. The Guovssahasah Hotel was designed for the patrons to absorb the audible light while enjoying three unique views of the taiga forest. In order for the hotel to reach three stories pilotis shoot though the structure lifting it above the ground. Timber cut locally by the process of selective cutting creates a large trail that loops throughout the site.

Framed Pension 2013 / 06
Gwangju, South Korea/ JOHO Architecture The Framed Pension project was designed for a closed competition which required accommodations, a chapel and retail space. Using minimal design with one main organic gesture, the pension swoops across the sky creating a blank canvas which would frame the views of surrounding landscape for the chapel. Green roofing allows the public to have an increased observation of the parks lake and surroundings and the building would morph into the ground blurring the contrast of building and nature.

Helsinki Library 2012 / 04
Helsinki, Finland/ AtelierPRO
Inspired by the yearly thaw of ice sheets surrounding Helsinki; the building takes cue from the cracked crevasses and overlapping ice sheets caused by ocean waves. Inside the central lobby, natural light streams from above seeping across the scattered overlapping floor plates. Environmental design is heavily incorporated in the faรงade increasing natural light during winter and reducing light during summer. This is achieved due to the glass faรงade protruding inwards and outwards in a continuous fashion.
