When we describe a person, we should try to write in such a way that, by the time the reader finishes reading the essay, s/he feels like s/he really knows the person. TOPIC: Describe one of your best friends. Describe your ideal partner. PLAN: INTRODUCTION Introduce the person: his/her name, relationship with you, when you first met, etc.
BODY Present descriptive elements. Distribute physical and character traits in different paragraphs. Include: age, height, build, hair, face, clothes, etc. and talk about his/her virtues and flaws. LINGUISTIC FEATURES: use of as many adjectives as possible and be polite in the treatment of negative aspects.
MODEL: My Pen-friend. I will never forget the day when I first met Rudy, my pen-friend from Hungary. We had arranged to meet at the train station and when his train arrived, I could see someone among the crowd with a rucksack which had a Hungarian flag on it. He had sent me a photograph a couple of years ago in which he had short, straight hair and he looked like a young boy but now he was totally different. This new person had long, curly hair and was much taller than I had imagined. He had a short beard now and two wooden earrings on each ear. He was broad-shouldered and strong and he was wearing some cool clothes; baggy pants and a fashionable t-shirt. Of course, it was Rudy himself – the photography had been taking during his army service, which is why his hair had been so short. Rudy spent a week in my home, and I soon learned a lot about the person with whom I had been corresponding. From his letters, I knew that he had an excellent sense of humour; he has been very kind all the time. I had no idea, however, that he was so outgoing and talkative. He needed no introduction to anyone, and if he saw a beautiful girl, he would start talking to her as if they had known each other for years. Rudy was also a very curious person and wanted to visit as many historical sites as possible.
CONCLUSION State your personal feelings towards the person you have chosen.
In conclusion, I enjoyed having Rudy around for some weeks. His energy was as endless as his curiosity. Being with Rudy was like being in the middle of a whirlwind. Everything seemed so quiet after he returned to Hungary ‌
