Identity theft: first line of defense By KEITH A. BASSI, ESQ. We are all potential victims of identity theft. Understand-ing how thieves acquire your personal information can help prevent the crime Bassi by creating a solid first line of defense. Here is how it’s done: ■ Pretexting is a criminal posing as a legitimate business person and soliciting you by phone. ■ Phishing is the same thing online with a computer. ■ Transactional theft occurs during a legitimate purchase when you hand your card to an untrustworthy cashier. Swipe your own card and be certain all carbon copies are destroyed. ■ Stealing bank statements from your home or car can be easily accomplished when they are carelessly left in plain view. ■ Trash pulling is a form of stealing, so make certain account information is thoroughly shredded before placing it in the trash. ■ Intercepting mail that contains credit cards, bank brokerage statements or offers give thieves essential informa-
tion and opportunities that can be exploited. Obviously we all need to be especially protective of our personal identification numbers (PINS) and Social Security number. Avoid giving these out to third parties under any circumstances, except an absolute need to know basis. Prevention begins with diligence. You can and should monitor your own credit report annually by ordering a copy of it from: Annual Credit Report Request Service P.O. Box 105281 Atlanta GA 30348-5281 (877) 322-8228 www.annualcreditreport. com Regularly and consistently check your bank and brokerage statements and keep all credit card and debit receipts to reconcile them with your accounts monthly. If you are a victim of identity theft: 1. Place a “fraud alert” on your accounts with the credit bureaus: Equifax, 1-800-525-6285 Experian, 1-888-397-3742 TransUnion, 1-800-680-7289 2. Close all tampered accounts and those that are “at risk.” 3. Notify the check verification companies:
Telecheck, 1-800-710-9898 Certegy, 1-800-437-5120 4. File a police report 5. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission 1877-IDTHEFT (438-4338) 6. Document all phone calls
and correspondence. With diligence and persistent attention to those opportunities, thieves will take advantage of, you can be the first and best line of defense in preventing identity theft.

The former Rite Aid space in Charleroi will be available July 1, 2008. The wide open 11,103square-foot space is ready for a medical practice, retail business, professional offices, day care, etc. The possibilities are worth considering in this clean space located adjacent to parking, restaurant, bus lines, and a busy downtown business district. The space is located only 1 mile from Interstate 70 and 3 miles from Route 43 (Mon Fayette Expressway). As a bonus, the same building contains Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services’ headquarters employing 200 people, and is right next to the proposed 35,000 square foot event center. Dump the pump — fight gas prices and take the bus June 19 With high gas prices on everyone’s mind, Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority (MMVTA) is joining with other public transportation systems throughout the Commonwealth and the nation to participate in the third annual national Dump the Pump Day on June 19. Sponsored by the American and Pennsylvania Public Transportation Associations (APTA/PPTA), the 2008 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, conserve gasoline, and help reduce greenhouse gases. “Using public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices,” said MMVTA Executive Director Valerie Kissell. “If gas prices are too high for you, then “dump the pump” and take one of our buses for free on June 19.” When boarding a MMVTA bus on June 19, all riders will ride at no charge. “By participating in the third annual national Dump the Pump Day, we hope people who have never used a MMVTA bus will decide to give us a try instead of driving their car,” said Kissell.
MMVTA will welcome new riders and thank regular riders on the National Dump the Pump Day with free rides all day and by distributing a complimentary memento to the first 1,400 riders to board the bus on June 19. “With gas prices higher than ever and financial concerns affecting everyone, now is the time to save money and ride public transportation,” said APTA President William W. Millar. “The National Dump the Pump Day on June 19 is an opportunity for people across the country to make a difference in their wallet, as well as in the environment.”
Charleroi Food Pantry serves local residents The Charleroi Food Pantry is located in the basement of the Holy Ghost Byzantine Church, 828 Meadow Ave. in Charleroi. The organization operates under the direction of Susan Braunegg and is staffed by approximately 18 volunteers who accept inventory, package, and distribute the food to approximately 160 families or individuals each month. Thanks to recent donations from the Fallowfield Boy Scouts, Lee Supply Company, 10th Street Athletic Club, Charleroi Area School District, Madonna Catholic School and the Charleroi Post office the shelves are fully stocked with food at this time. "We rely on donations from local churches and organiza-
tions to keep our doors open and are very thankful for their support," Braunegg said. "We are also very fortunate to have the support of some very dedicated individuals." Monetary donations are very important to keeping the organization afloat. Funds donated are used for rent, phone bills and other incidentals. The food pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon for the convenience of all who need this service. Applicants must provide proof of income and residence on the first visit and once approved, are eligible to pick up food monthly. For additional information about making a donation or to apply for assistance, please call (724) 483-6133.
CHARLEROI — Riverside Place’s expansion with evening and weekend programs and activities continues to bring exciting events to Chamber Plaza. With the help of Community Liaison Dorothy Hammond and Senior Center Specialist, Missy Georgagis, you are able to be a part of the special fun and festivities. Zumba Class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. continues to grow. Participants greatly enjoy the salsa-based exercise program and have noticed healthy improvements. New participants are welcome. DanceTown and Wii continue to be big hits as well. The DanceTown fitness system, designed for older adults, combines dancing and computers. Players listen to music while watching arrows on a screen, then move in sync on the dance pad. This fitness-based, interactive video game combines the fun of an arcade with the benefits
of dance and exercise. Nintendo Wii is a virtual game of bowling, golf, boxing, tennis, and baseball. There’s no fighting for lanes, reserving a place on the course, or hurrying to beat the rain. This new, exciting and healthy way to have fun with friends brings the entertainment in-house. In addition, bowling teams are now forming for Wii. If you’re interested call Riverside to sign up. With all the activity happening at Riverside Place, it’s only natural to work up a hunger. Riverside boasts great food sales. Homemade pizza will be sold June 6 and 20 from 11 a.m. to noon. Fried dough sales will be June 13 and 27 from 8 to 10 a.m. In addition, on June 17, the whole plaza will smell of homemade Belgian waffles for the waffle breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Take outs are available for all food sales and everyone is welcome. There is also plenty of fun outside of Riverside Place. If
you are looking for a getaway, Riverside is offering more and more trips every month. On June 13, you and your friends can experience the fun and excitement of Wild Things baseball. On June 16 enjoy a day at the Meadows Racetrack and Casino. And June 19 is a day of fun in the sun while shopping in the Pittsburgh Strip District. For more activities, see our full-page ad in this edition of the Regional Reporter. Riverside Place is quickly becoming “a place to be.” With all this excitement, Riverside is looking for a few good folks to serve on a planning committee specifically charged to work with staff to plan and implement evening and weekend events and trips. All who are interested can call Riverside Place. For more information about events or how to get involved at Riverside Place, contact Missy Georgagis at (724) 4835800. Please come and enjoy the fun.

Touch of Elegance is located in beautiful, historical Charleroi on 515 McKean Ave. This store is without a doubt a touch of elegance, specializing in top-end discount furniture, antiques, glassware, collectables, floral arrangements, Avon products, jewelry, candles and more. The store is a family-run business owned and operated by Donna Fanala with three great helpers — sons George and Ricky and husband George. The men in the family are in charge of all furniture deliveries and husband George is also in charge of finding the top quality furniture and antiques that are sold at the store. “Our motto is ‘If it’s not good enough for our house, it's not good enough for our store,’" said Donna Fanala. Upon entering the store, you will immediately notice how spotlessly clean it is. The wonderful aroma of scented candles burning creates an atmosphere where a shopper can go on a true treasure hunt. With so much to offer, you can find something new for the home or just find a memory of grandma's house from the fine selection of antiques throughout the store. The inventory changes weekly, so there's no telling what you might find. The Fanala Family is proud to be a part of the Charleroi business community. “Our store is located among some of the finest restaurants in the Mon Valley,” stated Donna Fanala. So before or after lunch, stop in and browse around!” Store hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Volunteers got together in Magic City Square to help with this important community clean-up project. The Charleroi Fire Department contributed to the effort by hosing down the streets. Coffee and donuts were provided by the Rotary Club, and the local McDonald’s gave out coupons for a special treat after all the work was done. Thanks to all of those who contributed to this successful community event! From left are Charleroi volunteer firefighters Dakota McBride, Jeremy Shipley and Andrew Acker.

A DUI simulator was on display at Charleroi Area High School May 5. The event was sponsored by Students Against Drunk Driving in order to demonstrate the effects of driving under the influence. The demonstration was intentionally scheduled just prior to Charleroi’s prom which was held May 9. The P.E.E.R.S. Aware III Simulation System emulates real world driving conditions. The system uses an actual car, not a trailer and a seat behind some fake driving position. The system facilitates real driving conditions using sensors attached to various parts of the car. Unlike other systems that try to imitate both the road and the vehicle, this system uses a real vehicle and models the road. The sensors that are attached to the car send feed back to a computer, which in turn provides direct feed back to the student, through virtual reality goggles in a head mounted display unit. The goggles provide a panoramic view of the roadway. As the student manipulates the petals and steering of the vehicle the computer software reacts immediately to provide instant feedback to the student as though they were actually driving the car. The system recreates not only everyday driving conditions encountered on the road, like haze, rain, fog, heavy traffic, but also driving on ice, snow and driving under the influence. This simulator is the first of its kind using virtual reality goggles and computer simulation.

So before or after lunch, stop in and browse around!” Store hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For more activities, see our full-page ad in this edition of the Regional Reporter. All who are interested can call Riverside Place. For more information about events or how to get involved at Riverside Place, contact Missy Georgagis at (724) 4835800. Please come and enjoy the fun.
