Leadership was the subject of the Chamber's April 8 luncheon at the Monongahela Country Club with 60 in attendance. Ray Andrews, Leadership Washington County Chairman shared the presentation duties with Andrea Kelvington. Both are well acquainted with the program and reviewed the curriculum and the sites that are visited throughout the County. The program objectives are met through monthly day-long sessions combined with field trips and class projects. Class sessions develop participants' basic awareness and key skills that are necessary to prepare them to be future leaders in the public and/or private sector. Some of the session topics i n c l u d e d : Government & Politics, Business & Economic Development, the Justice System, Education, Quality of

Life, Health & Human Services, and Community Leadership. A graduation ceremony was held at the end of the program, and graduates become part of the growing group of Leadership alumni, which offers extensive networking opportunities. Also of importance is that graduates are prepared to serve on non-profit boards, where often times organizations are found with a shortage of volunteers for the positions. Leadership Washington County scholarships are available at the Mon Valley R e g i o n a l Chamber for the fall class. Two names and alternates will be selected from a field of interested parties that respond to a member mailing to be sent in June. Awardees then apply to Leadership for acceptance into the program. When shopping for car insurance, be careful to select "full tort" as opposed to "limited tort." It is easy to be sold on the latter under the pretense that you are saving money. If you are involved in an automobile accident, the difference can be huge if you are seeking to collect for pain and suffering caused. In short, the savings is not worth the long-term loss you may suffer. The "full tort" option maintains the unrestricted right for the insured to seek financial compensation for all injuries caused by other drivers. This includes the pain and suffering caused by the accident. The "limited tort" option limits the insured's right to seek financial compensation for injuries caused by other drivers to medical and other out-of pocket expenses. The insured gives up the right to claim pain and suffering or other non-monetary damages. This means that limitations of activities, impairments

and extreme pain caused by the negligence of the other driver will not be compensated. The tradeoff is that the "full tort" option Bassi may have a higher premium cost than the "limited tort" option. But when suffering from injuries, pain and limited mobility, the premium cost is well worth the investment. For more information about the Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Act in Pennsylvania, consult with the attorney of your choice. Those with experience representing injured victims of automobile accidents will undoubtedly tell you not to be penny wise and pound foolish.

The Cal U hockey team skated away with the ACHA Division III championship this season.

Congratulations to Cal U athletes California University of Pennsylvania has put the Mon Valley on the map with the unprecedented success of its athletic teams. Five major championships have been achieved in the fall season — ice hockey: ACHA (National) Division III Championship; football, NCAA Regional Championship; women’s volleyball, NCAA Regional Championship, men’s basketball, NCAA Regional Championship; and women’s basketball, NCAA Regional Championship. Combined, these five champions compiled a cumulative record of 132-19! The extraordinary success of these teams

(and the swimming team and the men’s indoor track and field team) has helped Cal U athletics head into the spring season in seventh place the 2007-08 U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup. The university is in second place in the PSAC’s Dixon Cup standings for the best overall athletic program among the 14 state universities. The best of wishes from the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce to all of our champions and best of luck to all of the spring teams in bringing the Dixon Trophy to the University for the first time!

The Economic Development Summit April 19 at California University was a result of the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation (BARC) receiving a grant from RURAL LISC with a goal to produce an economic development project driven by a multi community effort. Bill Lafe, of Lafe Associates, was the consultant who led the effort. The first initiative was to review the many studies done for Brownsville and the Monongahela River. A team was established inviting representatives from the surrounding communities to participate. The committee consisted of representatives from Brownsville and Uniontown (Fayette County), California, Centerville and Washington, (Washington County) and Waynesburg (Greene County). Lafe presented many topics recommended in the studies and the team narrowed them down to four topics of importance from the studies that related to Economic Development: 1. Housing. 2. Environmental education. 3. River-water trail

Deb Keefer, director of the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, reports the response has been tremendous for the Jeff Tobe workshop set for May 13. She encourages all local businesses, including non-members to take advantage of the seats that are still open for the luncheon and/or workshop. “Everyone needs a dose of motivation now and then,” Keefer said. “And Jeff will do the job.” Tobe, an international keynote speaker, teaches organizations how to color outside the lines without falling off the page. River House brings people together Vintage, charming and simply beautiful best describe the River House Cafe at 506 McKean Ave. in the historic district of Charleroi. With warm colors and rich handcarved woodwork, you immediately feel relaxed and comfortable. "When commenting on our endeavors people ask me “Why Charleroi?’ said owner Lori J. Coury. “My response is ‘Why not!’ Charleroi has so much potential with its quaintness and charming streets that I believe it can be the next mini-South Side! The residents of this town and the surrounding areas have been wonderful and very supportive." For the past three years, Michael Coury has owned and operated Salatino's pizzeria, an Italian restaurant, also on McKean Avenue. "We've been successful because we truly care for our customers and our employees,” Michael Coury said. “We love sitting down with them and learning about them and their families. On the walls all around the River House cafe are antique photographs

that were donated by customers who grew up in this Valley. It provides them with a sense of pride and ownership and I love that." Along with the beautiful decor is fabulous food. The River House menu was created with a variety of tastes in mind. The in-house chef has incorporated many of his own creations of sauces and seasonings in every item. Entrees including steak, seafood, chicken and pasta dishes range from $9.99 to $21.99. Also available anytime of the day is a selection of burgers, wraps and sandwiches including the "Mon Burger", named after the Mon Valley. Top off your appetite with a sweet list of homemade desserts, including creme brulee and chocolate espresso mousse. Renovating the River House cafe from a furniture store was a challenge. The Courys hired only local remodeling and architectural professionals. As you walk in the front door you immediately notice the beauty of the handcrafted walnut bar. The wood ceiling

The only request that we have for our customers is to remove their headgear when they come in. “The River House cafe is all about family. We love to see kids and the families dining together. Toast to Our Stars The 58th annual "Toast to our Stars" was held in Charleroi April 26. This event pays tribute to students and athletes from North Charleroi. Students honored at this year's celebration include Zach Carson, outstanding athlete; Nathan Hega, outstanding student; and Micala Neff, outstanding Athlete. In addition, Zach Carson was the recipient of two scholarships, the Dorothy & Emil Hyk Scholarship and the Frenchy Pyrex Scholarship. Carson plans to attend Messiah College, where he will be a member of the soccer team and major in education. Neff will be attending LaRoche and Hega’s plans are as yet undecided. Congratulations and best of luck to these outstanding students and scholars!

More than 50 teams of students from Charleroi Area, Ringgold, Belle Vernon Area and Frasier school districts participated in the third annual Relay for Life at the Charleroi campus April 18. The event raised more than $32,000 for the American Cancer Society. “Students begin planning in September and met monthly throughout the year in order to bring it all together,” event chairperson Kayla Yakich said. To participate, teams were required to raise a minimum of $50. Once qualified, money was raised through game and food booths, in addition to walker pledges. Dr. Mary Kreis, assistant professor of sports management studies at California University, was a featured guest. A cancer survivor, Kreis was selected as one of 25 cyclists to participate in Tour of Hope – a cross country bike tour with Lance Armstrong. This year’s relay theme, “Live Strong/Fight Back,” was partly inspired by Kreis’ agreement to take part in the event.

"Charleroi students rock!" was the cheer heard over and over during the recent McTeacher's Night at the Charleroi McDonald’s. The event was held April 21 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and was coordinated by Kristy Altemara of McDonald’s and Tadem Perok, a fourth grade teacher from Charleroi Elementary Center. Teachers could be found running registers, cleaning tables and working the drive-through window. All students in attendance entered a drawing to win one of six prizes. The highlight was the “Holler for a Dollar” jar. When the jar was passed around, students each put a dollar in, the teachers all cheered, "Charleroi students rock!" The event was a great success, raising $791.30 for the technology department at the school. A slide show featuring the entire night of fun can be found at http://www. p h o t o s h o w. c o m / watch/CF2nu9iw.

Salute to Scholars May 21 Charleroi Area High School’s Salute to Scholars event is scheduled for May 21. This by-invitation-only event began back in the very early 1980s under the sponsorship of then teacher John P. Lozosky. Lozosky initiated the idea of honoring the top students in the graduating class by providing them with recognition medals to be worn on their gowns at commencement. This honor was one created by the students for the students. At that time, the motto of the CAHS student council was "We exist to serve.” Although the ceremony has changed a bit over the years,

this special event clearly continues to be one of meaningful tradition and prestige. The students who first envisioned this celebration of their peers wanted to recognize and reward the hard work and meritorious academic accomplishments of their fellow students, lending their academic successes the same degree of honor and significance as had previously been the case in the athletic arena. Planning is currently under way for this year's event, which will be held in the Charleroi Area High School Community Room.

This is a great opportunity to highlight your organization! Access the online application at www.shopcharleroi. com. Spaces are limited, so secure your booth today! In addition to vendors, the TEAM is also looking for sponsors for the annual fireworks display. Space is also available for crafters at a cost of $10 per table. These tables are limited to vendors selling hand crafted items only. If you are interested in additional information about participating in this community event, please call (724) 4833070 for additional information.

Bring a team of friends down Thursdays for the River Houses trivia night and a chance to win prizes and gift certificates. For sports lovers there's not a bad seat in the house, large flat screen TVs adorn every wall. "We have a casual environment where we want you to feel right at home." Lori Coury said. "I've never heard so many conflicting stories regarding our dress code. So to set the record straight, jeans and tennis shoes are welcome, collared shirts, appropriate t-shirts, appropriate shorts and polo shirts are welcome as well. The only request that we have for our customers is to remove their headgear when they come in. “The River House cafe is all about family. We love to see kids and the families dining together. We're running a special. All the kids who wear sports uniforms get a free dessert with their meal! I guarantee you won't be disappointed in your experience with us." Toast to Our Stars The 58th annual "Toast to our Stars" was held in Charleroi April 26.
