Transplant Recipients International Organization/ Pittsburgh (TRIO), a local non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of lives touched by the miracle of transplantation, is planning its annual fundraising dinner, “Team Pittsburgh! We’re Transplantastic!” This year Team Pittsburgh! will honor its proud athletes who are transplant recipients, donor family members, living donors, families, friends, and health care professionals from Western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia who will represent this region at the U.S. Transplant Games being held in Pittsburgh, July 11-18, 2008. The dinner will be held on Monday evening, April 14, 2008 at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association in Oakland. SPEERS — The Valley's first technical college students could be attending classes at the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center in Speers in March. By the fall of 2009, as many as 18 students could be entering the workforce, earning $18,000 to $24,000 a year installing air conditioning equipment or working on computers. That is the goal of state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, along with education and business leaders who helped organize the program. The formal announcement was made Feb. 8 in the Mon Valley Tech Access Room, a two-way Web-based room with multiple laptop computers available for distance learning. Although it is a separate program, it will be operated in conjunction with Westmoreland County Community College. Students will take technical classes at the Speers site, but can take basic education classes such as English and math at WCCC's Mon Valley campus in Rostraver Township. The 18-month, 60-credit program will cost $73 per credit for Westmoreland County students and $146 a credit for all others. However, Daley presented a $5,000 check to Dr. Patrick E. Gerity, WCCC vice president of workforce and community development, for student scholarships. The grant from the state Community Revitalization Program

Four years ago, Daley introduced legislation to create a technical college system statewide. He said there was no such system and just two tech-
nical colleges statewide, the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and Pennsylvania College of Technology. At the same time, Daley formed the Mon Valley Community Education Council to support creation of a technical college in the Valley. The Mon Valley Progress Council has provided consulting services for the Mon Valley Community Education Council, which included business and education leaders. The state budget approved last summer provided $2 million to establish technical college programs during 2007-08 with the long-term goal of establishing 10 programs over the next several years. WCCC was the sole recipient of the Pennsylvania Department of Education's new demonstration grants to establish technical college programs. California University of Pennsylvania also is involved in the new program and took part in the ceremony. "We were losing too many of our young people who did not want to get a four-year degree," Daley said. Daley said the former Montgomery Ward building in Charleroi originally was considered to house the program. "My vision is for young people to get an education, an opportunity for them to be trained in something they can get a job in," Daley said.

In 1925 Adamson was named to the first Mon Valley Conference AllStar Team ever selected. John Hewitt, a 1957 Bellmar High School graduate was a U.S. Naval Academy AllAmerican and captain of the 1961 football team who met P r e s i d e n t Kennedy at the Army Navy game. Hewitt was the first Navy player to play 30 consecutive games. In high school he was an All-Con-ference player in 1955 and 1956 and received the 1956-57 Fayette County Athlete of the Year Award and was a 2000 inductee of the Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame. A gifted passer, Gary Hogan led the 1959 Charleroi “Dream Team” to a perfect 100 season and went on to Purdue University. He was the starting quarterback before the arrival of future NFL Hall of Fame quarter-
back Bob Griese. Joe Kurey, a 1958 Monessen High graduate and Bethany College standout in basketball and tennis became Bethany’s athletic director. As a netter, Kurey teamed with Jim Baker his senior year at Monessen to win the PIAA doubles title. He was inducted into the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. Donora High School’s Billy Russell led the Dragons to the Big 6 title and was the conference scoring champion with 96 points in 1953. Russell landed a four-year scholarship to the University
of Detroit where he received All Missouri Valley honors. Owning one of the longest and most diverse tenures in the University of Pitts-burgh’s Athletic Department, Donna DeMarino Sanft serves as Pitt’s executive associate athletic director. Sanft was an allstar gymnast both at Monessen High School and Pitt. She also coached the Panthers’ gymnastics team for 12 years, compiling an 82-50-1 record, and was twice selected Eastern Collegiate Coach of the Year. The late phenom Robert “Red” Worrell was an all around standout athlete at Centerville High School in the 1950s. A scholastic AllAmerican football player, he was courted by 135 colleges and was named the top player in the WPIAL as a junior and senior and set WPIAL and PIAA records in track. His name is immortalized at Penn State with the “Red Worrell Award” given to a player of exemplary conduct since 1958. Worrell is a 1998 recipient of the Washington/Greene County Sports Hall of Fame award. The late John Wozniak, a
1940 Marion High School graduate who became the captain for Alabama’s Crimson Tide would perform in the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl and Blue-Gray All-Star game. After college Wozniak played for the All-American Football Conference and the Canadian Football League. The 15th annual banquet will be held at the Willow Room in Rostraver Township All those attending this year’s banquet June 13 will receive a commemorative badge honoring the first two Sports Hall of Fame inductees in 1951 Stan Musial and Bert Rechichar. The banquet will once again feature senior student scholarathletes from the eight schools representing the inductees, Belle Vernon Area, Brownsville, California, Charleroi, Elizabeth Forward, Monessen, Ringgold and Yough. The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee announced its new inductees Feb. 1 from an exhaustive list of worthy candidates from the Mon Valley compiled by general chairman Steve Russell. Brian Herman, long-time sports editor of The Valley Independent, chairs the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame selection committee reorganized in 1996 by past founder Bernard T. Sarra Sr. Committee members representing the eight school districts that form the nucleus of the Hall of Fame area are Rudy Andabaker, Carl Crawley, Jr., Wally Gibbons, Bill Kubin, Baptiste Manzini, Elmo Natali, Bob Pietriell, Peter Roman, Steve Russell, Reid Smith and Ron Paglia. California University’s stadium is named for the late J a m e s “ K a y o ” Adamson , one of the few football players who played college football while still in high school. In 1971 California State College named its new football stadium at the college farm complex in Adamson’s honor. At the time he was a member of the College Board of Trustees.

The Mon Valley Home and Garden Show, scheduled for April 4 to 6, is the Valley’s biggest event of the year and is scheduled for the beginning of the spring season so folks considering the goodweather projects can find what they are looking for at the best price. This is an excerpt from a Valley Independent article titled “Valley projects cash in on slots.” Locally, four Mid-Mon Valley projects made the final list including the Coyle Theater Restoration, Mid Mon Valley Cultural Trust, total project cost, $1,157,500; recommended funding $250,000. Nancy Ellis, chairwoman of the Mid Mon Valley Cultural Trust board, said the agency originally applied for $635,000 and later modified its request to $400,000. She said the $250,000 will be used to purchase two vacant buildings next to the Coyle Theater for use as a reception area, office space and for handicap accessible restrooms. The grant will also help pay for asbestos removal and to start interior renovations. Ellis said the trust hopes to open the theater by fall 2009. The trust is planning to apply for grants through two other state programs. "We're very appreciative of and very humbled that the merit of our project was considered and that the committee took into consideration the amount of work we've put into this project and the amount of support we've had," Ellis said.

Residents at Riverside Place will have access to a fitness system called “Dancetown USA” beginning today.
CHARLEROI — There’s a revolution happening at Riverside Place — a dance Revolution. “Dancetown USA” will make its debut at Riverside Place today. This new fitness system, designed for older adults, combines dancing and computers. Players listen to music while watching arrows on a screen; then move in sync on the dance pad. This fitness-based, interactive dance video game combines the fun of an arcade with the benefits of dance and exercise. “Participants are so excited about Dancetown,” said Melissa Georgagis, River-side Place specialist. “We are all looking forward to adding some fun to our exercising.” In addition to this new dancing, social adventure, March at Riverside Place is filled with more exciting madness. On Tuesday, March 4, Riverside launches the arrival of Nintendo Wii. Displayed on a 37-inch flat screen, plasma television, this interactive video game is the highlight of the center. Participants will enjoy a virtual game of bowling, golf, boxing, tennis, and baseball. No fighting for lanes, reserving a place on the course, or hurrying to beat the rain and clouds. This new, exciting and healthy way to have fun with friends brings the entertainment inhouse. In addition, four other flatscreen televisions will be mounted throughout the center. “We are so excited,” said Georgagis. “Riverside Place has become a state-of-the-art community facility. Residents at Riverside Place will have access to a fitness system called “Dancetown USA” beginning today.
CHARLEROI — There’s a revolution happening at Riverside Place — a dance Revolution. “Dancetown USA” will make its debut at Riverside Place today. This new fitness system, designed for older adults, combines dancing and computers. Players listen to music while watching arrows on a screen; then move in sync on the dance pad. This fitness-based, interactive dance video game combines the fun of an arcade with the benefits of dance and exercise. “Participants are so excited about Dancetown,” said Melissa Georgagis, River-side Place specialist. “We are all looking forward to adding some fun to our exercising.” In addition to this new dancing, social adventure, March at Riverside Place is filled with more exciting madness. On Tuesday, March 4, Riverside launches the arrival of Nintendo Wii. Displayed on a 37-inch flat screen, plasma television, this interactive video game is the highlight of the center. Participants will enjoy a virtual game of bowling, golf, boxing, tennis, and baseball. No fighting for lanes, reserving a place on the course, or hurrying to beat the rain and clouds. This new, exciting and healthy way to have fun with friends brings the entertainment inhouse. In addition, four other flatscreen televisions will be mounted throughout the center. “We are so excited,” said Georgagis. “Riverside Place has become a state-of-the-art community facility. In 1925 Adamson was named to the first Mon Valley Conference AllStar Team ever selected. John Hewitt, a 1957 Bellmar High School graduate was a U.S. Naval Academy AllAmerican and captain of the 1961 football team who met P r e s i d e n t Kennedy at the Army Navy game. Hewitt was the first Navy player to play 30 consecutive games. In high school he was an All-Con-ference player in 1955 and 1956 and received the 1956-57 Fayette County Athlete of the Year Award and was a 2000 inductee of the Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame. A gifted passer, Gary Hogan led the 1959 Charleroi “Dream Team” to a perfect 100 season and went on to Purdue University. He was the starting quarterback before the arrival of future NFL Hall of Fame quarter-
back Bob Griese. Joe Kurey, a 1958 Monessen High graduate and Bethany College standout in basketball and tennis became Bethany’s athletic director. As a netter, Kurey teamed with Jim Baker his senior year at Monessen to win the PIAA doubles title. He was inducted into the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978. Donora High School’s Billy Russell led the Dragons to the Big 6 title and was the conference scoring champion with 96 points in 1953. Russell landed a four-year scholarship to the University
of Detroit where he received All Missouri Valley honors. Owning one of the longest and most diverse tenures in the University of Pitts-burgh’s Athletic Department, Donna DeMarino Sanft serves as Pitt’s executive associate athletic director. Sanft was an allstar gymnast both at Monessen High School and Pitt. She also coached the Panthers’ gymnastics team for 12 years, compiling an 82-50-1 record, and was twice selected Eastern Collegiate Coach of the Year. The late phenom Robert “Red” Worrell was an all around standout athlete at Centerville High School in the 1950s. A scholastic AllAmerican football player, he was courted by 135 colleges and was named the top player in the WPIAL as a junior and senior and set WPIAL and PIAA records in track. His name is immortalized at Penn State with the “Red Worrell Award” given to a player of exemplary conduct since 1958. Worrell is a 1998 recipient of the Washington/Greene County Sports Hall of Fame award. The late John Wozniak, a
1940 Marion High School graduate who became the captain for Alabama’s Crimson Tide would perform in the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl and Blue-Gray All-Star game. After college Wozniak played for the All-American Football Conference and the Canadian Football League. The 15th annual banquet will be held at the Willow Room in Rostraver Township All those attending this year’s banquet June 13 will receive a commemorative badge honoring the first two Sports Hall of Fame inductees in 1951 Stan Musial and Bert Rechichar. The banquet will once again feature senior student scholarathletes from the eight schools representing the inductees, Belle Vernon Area, Brownsville, California, Charleroi, Elizabeth Forward, Monessen, Ringgold and Yough. The Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee announced its new inductees Feb. 1 from an exhaustive list of worthy candidates from the Mon Valley compiled by general chairman Steve Russell. Brian Herman, long-time sports editor of The Valley Independent, chairs the Mid Mon Valley All Sports Hall of Fame selection committee reorganized in 1996 by past founder Bernard T. Sarra Sr. Committee members representing the eight school districts that form the nucleus of the Hall of Fame area are Rudy Andabaker, Carl Crawley, Jr., Wally Gibbons, Bill Kubin, Baptiste Manzini, Elmo Natali, Bob Pietriell, Peter Roman, Steve Russell, Reid Smith and Ron Paglia. California University’s stadium is named for the late J a m e s “ K a y o ” Adamson , one of the few football players who played college football while still in high school. In 1971 California State College named its new football stadium at the college farm complex in Adamson’s honor. At the time he was a member of the College Board of Trustees.

SPEERS — The Valley's first technical college students could be attending classes at the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center in Speers in March. By the fall of 2009, as many as 18 students could be entering the workforce, earning $18,000 to $24,000 a year installing air conditioning equipment or working on computers. That is the goal of state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, along with education and business leaders who helped organize the program. The formal announcement was made Feb. 8 in the Mon Valley Tech Access Room, a two-way Web-based room with multiple laptop computers available for distance learning. Although it is a separate program, it will be operated in conjunction with Westmoreland County Community College. Students will take technical classes at the Speers site, but can take basic education classes such as English and math at WCCC's Mon Valley campus in Rostraver Township. The 18-month, 60-credit program will cost $73 per credit for Westmoreland County students and $146 a credit for all others. However, Daley presented a $5,000 check to Dr. Patrick E. Gerity, WCCC vice president of workforce and community development, for student scholarships. The grant from the state Community Revitalization Program

Four years ago, Daley introduced legislation to create a technical college system statewide. He said there was no such system and just two tech-
nical colleges statewide, the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and Pennsylvania College of Technology. At the same time, Daley formed the Mon Valley Community Education Council to support creation of a technical college in the Valley. The Mon Valley Progress Council has provided consulting services for the Mon Valley Community Education Council, which included business and education leaders. The state budget approved last summer provided $2 million to establish technical college programs during 2007-08 with the long-term goal of establishing 10 programs over the next several years. WCCC was the sole recipient of the Pennsylvania Department of Education's new demonstration grants to establish technical college programs. California University of Pennsylvania also is involved in the new program and took part in the ceremony. "We were losing too many of our young people who did not want to get a four-year degree," Daley said. Daley said the former Montgomery Ward building in Charleroi originally was considered to house the program. "My vision is for young people to get an education, an opportunity for them to be trained in something they can get a job in," Daley said.
