circumstances an estimate based on other evidence, will be accepted where the College considers the student has a valid reason (eg, illness) for not completing that task. Documentary evidence (eg, a doctor’s certificate) must be provided by the student wherever possible, in support of an illness/misadventure claim. If a student is absent without adequate cause, in the judgment of the College, or without leave being granted by the College, a mark of “zero” will be recorded.
St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Years 10, 11 & 12 1.
2.
(b)
NOTIFICATION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS Students will be notified in writing, at least two weeks (ten school days) before each task, what actual course component/s are being assessed and the weightings of each component. Details of the syllabus outcomes being assessed must be stated and marking criteria for the task included. If for any reason the task needs to be rescheduled students are to be given sufficient written notice of this change of date. DEADLINES/PENALITES FOR LATE WORK It is the student’s responsibility to submit all assessment tasks on time.
If a student knows in advance that they will be unable to attend for a particular task, or if a student is on an excursion on the day an assessment task is due, it is the student’s responsibility to request an extension (in advance). 4.
INVALID ABSENCE If a student is absent from an assessment task without valid explanations, a zero mark is to be awarded for that task.
Tasks are to be submitted in class on the due day (or by 3.30pm to the Class Teacher or Head of Department of the course if no class is on that day).
5.
If work is overdue, then the penalty is 10% of the initial available marks per day. For example, if a task was worth 20 marks and it is submitted one day late, then it is marked out of 20 and 2 marks will be deducted from the student’s score. If it is submitted two days late, then it is marked out of 20 and 4 marks will be deducted.
CHEATING Zero marks may be awarded for assessment tasks where any form of cheating has occurred. This applies to students who cheat or assist others to cheat in any way whatsoever.
6.
UNFAIR ADVANTAGE No student should gain an unfair advantage by having all or part of a task performed by another person. Teachers and Heads of Department must be satisfied that work is a student’s own. Unfair advantage, gained by any method of malpractice, (e.g. plagiarism) if proven, is regarded as cheating and may be scored zero.
7.
USE OF ICT and storage devices When making use of computers or storing information on memory sticks, hard drives etc. pertinent to an assessment task, it is the student’s responsibility to always keep a backup copy. Failure of electronic equipment or loss of information through memory stick, hard drive etc. failure does not warrant an extension. Nor may this be used as an excuse for non completion of a task. If following these types of technology problems a task is late then the usual penalties outlined above will apply.
Weekends will count as TWO DAYS. If an assessment task is five days late, it is to be scored zero, and the parents will be informed in writing by the Academic Coordinator that the task has not been completed. Students will be required to complete the set task to a standard acceptable to the College. Students seeking extensions should consult with the Head of Department of the course, before the due date, who will liaise with the Academic Coordinator in determining the eligibility for extensions. Trivial reasons for an extension will NOT BE CONSIDERED.
3.
Teacher Absence If a teacher is absent on the day an assessment task is due, students will be expected to submit their work to the substitute teacher or to the Head of Department of the course or by arrangement with the teacher beforehand (see also Point 2). Assessment tasks are NOT to be submitted to the College office staff.
STUDENT ABSENCE OR TEACHER ABSENCE
(see Assessment Handbook for detailed
information)
(a)
Student Absence Due to Illness / Misadventure It is a student’s responsibility to fulfill all requirements specified in the assessment schedule, including those tasks given during the student’s absence. However, a student who is absent from the school for a particular task, or who is adversely affected during the performance of a particular task, or who is unable to present an assignment for inclusion in the assessment, will not necessarily receive a “zero” mark for that task. Marks based on a substitute task, or in exceptional
