brief.

I didn’t intend to start a fashion magazine. At least, that wasn’t my initial thought.Truth be told, the name came first—as in, Joey Lauren Adams; as in, “You Joey!”—and its guts spilled out from there. Throughout these pages you’ll find plenty of style and fashion, but above all else, Joey is about attitude—from the magazine and the blog to the videos and the gallery/shop, where you’ll soon be able to purchase prints of many of the images featured here. For our launch issue, I commissioned a group of talented photographers and stylists to interpret the simple tagline “cool girls fashion.” It’s vague and intentionally kinda dumb, but as I started considering what I wanted Joey to be, above just being another magazine— something immediate, something

accessible, something direct, something inclusive—those three words stuck with me, particularly as a manner of introducing what it is we’re doing here. Often, I find myself inspired by Dean Spunt, drummer for LA rock duo No Age, who once outlined a refreshing credo for how he runs his small indie record label, PPM. “I just want to make rad stuff with rad people,” Spunt said. Joey is exactly that to me and everyone involved. This magazine lives proudly on the Web, where distraction reigns, so let’s indulge the medium to have some fun. Joey is a space to act ridiculous, search for beauty, take a chance, slay an idol, ignore the rules, pay tribute, feel comfortable being uncomfortable, fuck shit up, and yes, make rad stuff with rad people. Enjoy it! — Aaron @ Joey

Elizabeth Weinberg Photographer — What is cool? Cool is not caring what anyone thinks. Be it in the realm of a lifestyle, fashion, whatever. — Who’s the coolest girl you know? My 13-year old sister Abigail is a novelist and photographer, and she hasn’t even hit the eighth grade. — What’s the coolest thing you did this summer? Slept in an abandoned campground in upstate New York with 40 strangers. — Tell us a secret about yourself. I’m not really cool. — What are you excited for this fall? Layers, scarves and hats.

Allison Miller Stylist — What is cool? Joey, apparently! — Who’s the coolest girl you know? My alter ego: One day she’s a gypsy, the next day a groupie, the next a librarian. — What’s the coolest thing you did this summer? Teaching my son to swim. — Tell us a secret about yourself. Then it wouldn’t be a secret. — What are you excited for this fall? Cooler weather!

Jakob Axelman Photographer — What is cool? Passionate people and animated gifs. — Who’s the coolest girl you know? Jennifer Herrema. She is rock ’n’ roll personified, and she makes awesome art.— What’s the coolest thing you did this summer? I’ve been working on a photo project that I’m gonna exhibit this fall. Stay tuned. — Tell us a secret about yourself. You’re only as sick as your secrets. So I better pass on this one. — What are you excited for this fall? The fall in NYC is to die for.

Lucy Carr-Ellison Photographer — What is cool? Not this question. — Who’s the coolest girl you know? Sorry, but this is another vomit question. — What’s the coolest thing you did this summer? Went on a road trip around Europe with my best mate. — Tell us a secret about yourself. I snogged my younger brother’s mate at New Year’s. Uh oh, the cats out of the bag... — What are you excited for this fall? Sloe gin and mulled wine... Bring it on!

Alexander Wagner Photographer — What is cool? Invisible light. — Who’s the coolest girl you know? A girl I met on a flight to Detroit. — What’s the coolest thing you did this summer? Went to LA and drove my friend to work every day. — Tell us a secret about yourself. I always want to mispronounce “Nestle.” — What are you excited for this fall? Getting more work! j. | 026

“I let Breakfast out the window, an have Dinner.”

nd now I only

— What’s your favorite vegetable? Red peppers. — What movie always makes you cry? Stand by Me. — What’s the first album you ever bought? Paula Abdul’s Forever Your Girl. — What’s the loudest sound you can think of? A Sleigh Bells show. — Do you kiss on a first date? Depends on the date. — In the movie of your life, who plays you? I can’t think of an actor, but Derek [Miller, Alexis’ Sleigh Bells bandmate] says I remind him of the offspring of a dolphin and a raccoon...so maybe a reputable dolcoon. — We know you have your A machines on the table and your B machines in the drawer, but what’s inside your Hemnes linen cabinet from Ikea? A bunch of mismatched towels and the occasional Cheerio. — Complete this sentence: Rock music j. | 033

wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for... The Ramones. — If you could create a magic potion, what would it do? Enable underwater respiration. — You’re a little kid and it’s Saturday morning. What are you watching on TV? Care Bears. — What’s the last lie you told? I don’t lie. — What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? Folding thongs at the Gap. — What song do you wish you’d written? “Straight to Hell” by the Clash. — Tell us a secret. Once I had two parakeets named Breakfast and Dinner, but I let Breakfast out the window, and now I only have Dinner. — What’s your idea of pure happiness? Not sure yet, but I’m pretty sure it would include the following: a bull terrier, sun, an easily accessible body of water, frequent brunching, a tree fort, endless strawberry rhubarb pies, coconuts and lots of dancing.

fruitfull frozen fruit bars

We’ve never savored a Fruitfull Frozen Fruit Bar. Never. We’ve tried, sure, but these tasty any-season treats rarely last more than a minute in Joey’s hands. There was that one Mango Cream while walking down Seventh Avenue or that Strawberry that nearly made our knees buckle. We start with the top corners, then nibble off the sides. Those first bites—their sweetness restrained, never muted; their texture more like ice cream than a Popsicle—dissolve foolish notions of selfcontrol, and we quickly find ourselves gnawing on a stained wooden stick in search of lingering residue of deliciousness. Next on our agenda of Fruitfull consumption: the Horchata and Mamey-Sapote-Lucuma flavors. Yum! j. | 048

restless people Years back, Joey helped host a marathon night of bands in Bushwick, Brooklyn’s now-defunct Syrup Room—and by “helped host,” of course we mean “got blurry-eyed on vodka and some sort of adrenal-enhanced sponsor-provided mixer.” As the show tumbled to a close near 4 a.m., headliner Professor Murder took the stage for all of maybe six remaining people. Depleted crowd be damned, the dub-rock group still thumped out a terrific set, and our legs ached from an eveningending pogo fit. Restless People is Professor Murder 2.0, in that it’s composed of some of the same dudes and slings tracks with similarly joyous abandon. The group’s self-titled debut (on IAMSOUND) bends its cheese-ball charms and a glisten of Yeasayer-style grand polish into 30 minutes of ebullient bustle. Dance now. j. | 060

mercury lounge to times square One of NewYork City’s blue-ribbon delights is the early-fall night walk—whether alone or in good company. Still buzzing from a show at Mercury Lounge (Mystery Jets or Crocodiles, perhaps), Joey often zigzags north through neardeserted Manhattan, passing dim boutiques and perusing still-open magazine stands for September’s i-D or Dazed. As the crisp air of the coming cooler months chills the city, we button our cream short-sleeved Edun jacket—Joey’s fall staple—and break in the leather of our black overthe-knee See by Chloé boots as we continue uptown to Times Square (or Columbus Circle if we’re game) to nab a train home. The Manhattan night-walk proves a tremendously pleasurable way to bid adieu to sunburned shoulders and sweat dripping down your back. j. | 070
