brief.
I didn’t enjoy making the previous issue of Joey. I’d done four issues in 12 months, and what I’d envisioned as a liberating creative outlet was actually becoming quite the drag. I’d hoped Joey would be fun, but it had turned into more of a chore, its pages filled with afterthoughts and sterile ideas. So I quit. Or rather, I set Joey aside. I’d always assumed I would make another issue, even while I’d joke to friends that Joey was dead. Creating a digital fashion magazine from my bedroom is super weird. I knew that going in and probably forgot it the more attention Joey earned, but to a large extent, that inherent insignificance is important. It’s a relief of normal magazine-making stakes and pressures, and when,
on a whim, I started up work on issue No. 5 in late summer, I had a pretty clear idea of how to make Joey worthwhile again. The theme for Joey No. 5 is “huh?” and, as I relayed to my contributors, it’s intended to be ridiculous, just as it also looks to court ridiculousness. Stories for this issue all follow a thread of weirdness, which, as either photographers or stylists,we’re too often discouraged from embracing, or encouraged to classify as “personal” work. In the following pages, Chairlift singer Caroline Polachek ponders strange sounds, Spencer Wohrab shoots fashion in his shower, Aaron Feaver stages a burglary, and in the story “Gesture,” stylist Rachael Wang assembles looks optimized for flashing. This issue is odd (and possibly even pretty damn dumb). But really, I think it’s best that way. Enjoy! — Aaron @ Joey j. | 015
Meredith Jenks Photographer — Are you weird? I am probably pretty weird. When I was seven and would walk behind my mom pretending I was Steve Urkel, she would tell me I was weird. — What does being weird mean? Weird is just outside the norm enough to make someone uncomfortable.

Weird pushes people. It separates the individuals from the people that want to be like everyone else. Art could not be created without “weird,” and the world would be very boring without “weird.” Rachael Wang Stylist — Are you weird? Someone once told me I look like I get dressed in the dark. — What

Aaron Feaver Photographer — Are you weird? I think I’m the only normal one. — What does being weird mean? It means you got either too much or too little attention as a child. — What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done today? Watched sumo wrestling with a comic book artist and a clothing designer. — What’s the weirdest thing you can think of in the next five seconds? Narwhals. — Why is weird necessary? It’s not! Cookie cutter is the future!
Is Spencer w e i r d ? Spencer is totally weird. I’ve known it since the first time I met him. — What does being weird mean if you’re Spencer? Getting tattoos of girls’ names. Claiming ownership of other people’s animals. DJing an emo night. Wearing camouflage. Taking off his shirt. Falling
in love with everyone. Previous employment as a professional piercer. The one-piece-of-fruit-aday diet. Pejazzling. Strange facial hair. Asking me to fill this out. — What’s the weirdest thing Spencer probably did today? Talked to babes on OkCupid while listening to Taking Back Sunday; shotgunned Buds with his cat, Whiskey; and contemplated new styles for his facial hair. — What’s the weirdest thing you can think of in the next five seconds about Spencer? Chanel tattoo on his foot.

If anyone I truly think is weird are completely normal. Sometimes reads an interview where I said they’re boring people make us feel weird by comparison, but how can we think we’re weird, they’d be offended, so I’d better keep my mouth shut. — Tell us weird when all of our own decisions something weird about make perfect sense to us? animals.) — When does weird become normal? Something that’s weird becomes normalized when it’s re-appropriated for commercial use (with the promise of transferring exotic attractiveness, or pleasure) and then settles into the social landscape. When vocoders and AutoTune were first used, it was weird. But I enjoy singing as if I’m AutoTuned. That’s an example of normalizing a weird effect because I take it for granted as a known reference and hear it all the time without seeking it out. I connect it with my body. Gaga sings, “Can’t read my / Can’t read my / Just can’t read my poker face,” as if she’s being sampled, but she’s not. She just sings it that way because sampling became such a predominant thing that that’s just how we think of vocal lines now. Dubstep is being normalized right now; maybe that’s what’s really weird. — Why is weird necessary? Weirdness isn’t really necessary for survival, but it certainly can be attractive to potential mates, something that makes you stand out. Actually, wait, maybe it serves an important purpose in this globalized, overpopulated, dating-site world where human jobs are being quickly replaced by machines ’cause we need to feel special, or “not one of the,” or “breaking the mold” in order to not feel completely unnecessary. Feeling necessary is necessary to survival (in order to not off yourself) so maybe weirdness actually is the only point of humanity now. That plus love. j. | 022

joey likes: convenience
seamless.com. Laziness is a worthy indulgence, particularly tempering (or enhancing) bouts of productivity. Though since embedding Seamless.com’s app onto Joey’s iPad, we’re somewhat hesitant to admit that we’ve become dependent on the convenience of, say, finding a neighborhood spot that delivers red velvet cake at 3 am—as a friend of Joey’s been known to do. But Seamless.com’s merit extends beyond facilitating extreme late-night gluttony. For instance, we’re just a few swift taps from Beet’s golden curry with pineapple fried rice (or “the usual,” as our app now calls it). Gone are pesky tasks such as—gasp!— speaking to someone on the phone, and good riddance. We work hard. Enjoy the break. j. | 043

how to dress well. It’s easy to clump Tom Krell into the crop of PBR&B (notably: the Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Drake, Miguel). And as he sits with Joey at Roebling Tea Room in his former Brooklyn hood, the singer and producer known as How to Dress Well considers the role of candor, intent and reach in his music. Rather than aiming toward broad appeal, Krell’s R&B looks inward, becoming a haven for emotional outpourings and confessional honesty— much of which has become commonplace in R&B, though little of which has seemed so broken and bare as Krell’s on his second album, Total Loss. It’s music for Tom Krell; we’re lucky we get to hear it, too. j. | 060
