July 27, 2008: “After the Storm: Benefit Concert” initiated by AFSJ for typhoon Frank victims. Some members of FMAJ core performed on this event September 2009: AFSJ, STAC-J & Voices On Call organized “After the Storm 2009” for the benefit of typhoons Ondoy & Pepeng victims in cooperation of other FilCom groups. November 22, 2009: “After the Storm 2009” was held in Akabane Parish Church hall. Net proceeds 500kPHP was donated to PNRC February 17, 2011: Initial meeting/s on the formation of a musician’s group. Discussions focused on the group’s name, vision & mission and other attributes. The group name decided to be “Filipino Music Artists in Japan”. March 10, 2011: Meeting with other interested parties to discuss the drafted bylaws of the group; was decided to have a launching event to be entitled as “Musikahan” and committees were formed. March 11, 2011: M9 earthquake & tsunami devastated the Tohoku region. March 14. 2011: The proposed launching event “Musikahan” was diverted to “Hawak Kamay” charity concert for the benefit of the 3.11 earthquake & tsunami victims. May 1, 2011: Meeting with the cooperating groups, distribution of posters/flyers and tickets at Meguro. May 27, 2011: Final meeting with the cooperating groups, committees and main sponsor at Meguro. Event details discussed and follow-up for the ticket sales. May 29, 2011: “Hawak Kamay” charity concert held at Epoch Nakahara Hall in Kawasaki City. 600plus guests came. June 7, 2011: Initial hand-over of 200k JPY donation to JRCS June 11, 2011: FMAJ received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Phil Embassy during the Independence Day celebration at Japan Educational Center. Some members also served as volunteers on this event. June 19, 2011: FMAJ won 1st Prize at DOS Bowling tournament. July 2, 2011: Second hand-over of 1M JPY donation to JRCS. July 10, 2011: Thanksgiving mass and party for all Hawak Kamay staffs/volunteers held at Meguro Church hall. September 18, 2011: “Hawak Kamay” mini-live & soup run held at Karakuwa-cho, Kesennuma. Around 300 guests attended. December 31, 2011: Charity Jam for the typhoon Sendong victims held at What the Dickens in Ebisu. 170k PHP donated to PNRC, Sta Rita Parish and One for Iligan.
A non-profit organization of Filipinos in Japan who practice or have interest in the field of Philippine music of any genre; Filipinos who are singers, composers, lyricists, arrangers, instrumentalists and those who love and have passion about music.
-to actively involve Filipino musicians and the Filipino Communities in Japan in activities/projects for charity. -to bring together Filipino music lovers of all genres to participate and promote Philippine music. -to spearhead camaraderie among Filipino music artists in Japan through charity projects and other group activities -to have its members to gain exposures through live concerts and experience on event planning. -to help and support its members in improving their craft in music and nourishing the growth of Philippine music. -to become a channel or source of information about Philippine music that help musicians, students, researchers, teachers, cultural institutions, commercial agencies and enthusiasts of Philippine music.

Hawak Kamay Charity concert was organized not only to raise funds for the 3.11 earthquake and tsunami victims in Tohoku region but also to give all Filipinos around Tokyo area an opportunity to show our host country Japan and its citizens our sympathy and care during the time of crisis. 17 solo and band performers whole-heartedly contributed their time and talent; and19 Filipino organizations cooperated by volunteering and heading several working committees on the event and also helped drive the sales of the raffle/donation tickets. There were around 34 sponsors/donors who have given their contributions in monetary form or services. A total of 1.2M JPY was donated to JRCS for the Tohoku victims. The summary of the raised donations and allocations are shown in Tables 1 & 2.
As part of the Hawak Kamay initiative, an outreach program was also organized to meet our fellow kababayans and Japanese friends in the affected areas. With the help of Kesennuma FilCom members and the city hall, Sansankan in Karakuwa-cho where many temporary shelters are located nearby this hall, was chosen as the venue.
FMAJ and Because We Care organized a Charity Jam for the benefit of the typhoon Sendong victims. Due to time constraints, a jam session style was chosen to be the form of the performance. Around 15 artists including the International jazz singer Charito joined this cause. More than 100 guests came despite of year-end preparations for the new year celebration. A total net amount of 253,107JPY, 2,000PHP and 8USD were collected thru letter solicitations and donation boxes. An amount of 50,194JPY was taken from FMAJ’s remaining balance and added to achieve the amount of 303,301JPY (eq 170k PHP). The donation distribution is shown in Table 3.
Around 50 volunteers left Tokyo around midnight of Sep 17 in a bus, bringing a variety of relief goods. Preparations at the hall commenced upon arrival and the door opened to guests by 11am. Games started while lunch was getting prepared. Laughter could be heard from the audience and players; kids and adults enjoying a lot. After the games, Filipino dishes were served during the lunch. Stage performances followed later and the event was concluded with a group picture of all volunteers and guests who stayed till the end of the show. Around 300 guests participated; FilCom members from Kesennuma, Sendai and Ishinomaki also came to join/help in the event.
