Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen of his hens. The egg hatched and the baby eagle grew up along with the other chickens. It spent its life within the yard and and young ladies of Eunice Primary School: It pecked about the farmyard, scrabbling for grain. rarely looked up. f I look around at everyone seated here this evening, from the oldest person to the littlest angel, I am struck by one overwhelming fact, your collective uniqueness! Think what a remarkable, unduplicated and miraculous thing it is, to be you. No one who has ever lived or is to come has had your combination of abilities, talents, appearance, friends, acquaintances, sorrows or opportunities. No one’s fingerprints are like yours. No one sneezes like you do. No one is loved by the same combination of people that love you. You are absolutely unique! Treasure your uniqueness. It is a gift given only to you. Share your uniqueness. Let it be free to flow out among your family and friends and people you meet in the rush and clutter of daily living. That gift of yourself was given to you to enjoy and share. Give yourself away! This is what Eunice Primary School is all about. It is a place where uniqueness abounds and where it is nurtured to enable all who pass through her hands to prosper and grow through their own individuality. Our school is an opportunities driven haven. aimed at encouraging you to reach your full potential in whatever field it might be. The wealth of possibilities is to cater for unique personalities and to encourage originality of thought and action. This brings me to a story I would like to share with you. Once upon a time, a farmer found an abandoned eagle’s nest and in it was an egg, still warm. He took the egg back to his farm and laid it in the nest of one

From the outset our girls in green are inspired to soar like eagles and not to settle for anything less! The end result rests with each individual to take up the gauntlet and to pursue that special dream. You are taught to take care of the things that matter, to set priorities, not to sweat the small things in life and to use the Eunice way as a vehicle to achieve success. You will encounter obstacles now and again but they in themselves are learning curves for future growth. Life can sometimes be hard by the yard, but by the inch, it’s a cinch! Our unique pool of energetic, young minds is our future and Eunice is alive and well! A Primary School Office Block has a variety of functions with the most important being pastoral care. The pupils are drawn to Mrs Catherine Iffland like a magnet for love, generosity and kindness. No problem is too big or too small for her to handle with compassion and precision. Mrs Lynette van Wyk is a wizard with filing and creating invitations and trying to prevent unnecessary interruptions into the Principal’s office. Mrs Blair guards the school finances with a rod of iron. Her job is a mammoth task and very multi-facetted. She serves the school with distinction. Mr Eric Grobbelaar, Sports Organiser, is kept very busy with the intensive sports programme on offer at the school. He is also a very mischievous man playing many tricks on his male colleagues. I do not think he bought a new leather jacket this year – very remiss of you Mr Grobbelaar (By the way he has 16 leather jackets!). Mr Charl Claase, IT Manager, is the calmest man I have come across. His involvement in all school activities is wonderful and he is an immense help to me. Mrs Maggie Mclaren, PRO and Sports Shop Organiser, is kept very busy seeing to the needs of the Primary School and organising all necessary sponsorships. My Deputy, Mrs Pat van Tonder and 3 Heads of Departments, Mrs Ann Burri, Mrs Claire van der Merwe and Mrs Lynne Walraven have been of immeasurable assistance to me over the past year. Their dedication, attention to detail and support has been magnificent. A school is as successful as its staff compliment. I salute the Eunice Primary School teachers for their professionalism, their dedication and their creative flair for making an exciting learning experience for the pupils at our school. Your collectiveness uniqueness has inspired all who have been touched by your magic. Our Eunice “Baby Boom” continues with a vengeance. Mrs Chantel Smith gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter, Elné, in May of this year. We wish the Smith family joy in abundance. Mrs Tiffiny du Preez gave birth to a handsome baby boy, Doran, in July of this year. Doran is our miracle baby and we wish the family joy and happiness. I look forward to next year with interest and anticipation as I am sure the Eunice Family will continue to grow and prosper!

One of our parents was preparing breakfast for the family. The mom was trying desperately to get the tomato sauce out of the bottle. The telephone rang and her 4 year old daughter answered it saying,“Sorry, mommy can’t come to the phone now because she’s hitting the bottle.” At the beginning of this year, on the first day of school, a Grade 1 pupil handed a note to her teacher. The note said,“The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of her parents.” The Grade 3 pupils were having a lesson on oil pollution, The pupils were asked to write a few sentences on the effects of oil pollution for homework. One little pupil wrote, “When my mommy opened a tin of sardines last night it was full of oil and all the sardines were dead”. The Grade 1 pupils were making posters showing their family tree, with pictures and names. One little girl brought the family Bible from home to show the class an extended family tree. While she was turning the pages something fell out of the Bible. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. The little girl called out, “Teacher, Teacher look what I’ve found!” “What have you got there dear?” the teacher asked. With astonishment written all over the little girls face, she answered, “I think its Adam’s suit!” Examination answers can be a source of much merriment. with you: * * * * *

To keep milk from turning sour, keep it in the cow. The word “trousers” is an uncommon noun because it is singular at the top and plural at the bottom. Food is nourished in the stomach. It is digested by the lungs … The food then passes from your windpipe to your pores, and passes off your body by evaporation. An obtuse angle triangle is a solid three-sided figure with thick sides. Water is composed of two gins. Oxygin, and Hydrogin. Oxygen is pure gin and Hydrogin is gin and water.

Eunice Primary School has had a very busy year! It has been a success story with so many exciting features as well as new additions to our annual calendar. I would like to share some of the highlights with you: *

The Musical Production of “Magical Music” was a superb example of teamwork and support. The response to the show was outstanding. Mrs Krige, thank you for your superb organisation and creative flair in making the show such a resounding success. The brilliant Art Exhibition that exhibited works of art from every pupil from Grades 1 - 7. This initiative was the brainchild of Ms Jenni Pentz. Story Telling and Story Writing skills presented by Mr Dorian Harhoff, that brought tremendous joy to all the pupils. Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. But, tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever! Eunice Primary has had an excellent Atheltics Season with 21 pupils qualifying for the Motheo/Gariep Championships. For the first time 7 pupils qualified to compete at the Free State Championships. Two pupils were chosen to represent Free State at the South African Championships: Jana Steyn and Casendra Oerson. the school this year.

Our Pre-Primary School continues to prosper. There are 178 pupils in 6 classes (3 Grade R Classes and 3 Grade 00 Classes). Their exciting annual programme prepares them superbly for the demands of big school. I would like to share with you a poem entitled “Climb ‘til your Dreams come true”.

Climb ‘Til Your Dream Comes True Often your tasks will be many, And more than you think you can do. Often the road will be rugged And the hills insurmountable, too. But always remember, The hills ahead Are never as steep as they seem, And with Faith in your heart Start upward And climb ‘til you reach your dream. For nothing in life that is worthy Is ever too hard to achieve If you have the courage to try it, And you have the faith to believe. For faith is a force that is greater Than knowledge or power or skill, And many defeats turn to triumph If you trust in God’s wisdom and will. For faith is a mover of mountains, There’s nothing that God cannot do, So, start out today with faith in your heart, And climb ‘til your dream comes true!

I would like to pay special tribute to Mr Pat Uys for his wonderful involvement with Eunice Primary School this year. His support and enthusiasm for all our projects has been tremendous. Mr Uys your kindness and generosity towards me personally has been amazing and I regard you very highly as a member of my team. Thank you for all you do for Eunice Primary School. Mr Dell, Chairman of the Eunice Governing Body, thank you for all your dedicated involvement with Eunice Primary School. Your support and encouragement has been overwhelming. Dr Gillian Lamacraft, thank you too, for all your support and assistance that you so readily give to Eunice Primary School. Mr Stephen Fouchee, you have been encouraging and your support has been so special. Eunice Primary salutes the entire Governing Body who contribute, so readily of their time and energy into making our school the success that it is. Mr Cassar, working with you over the last 21 years has been both a joy and an enriching experience. Eunice Primary School wishes you and Mrs Cassar joy in abundance as you enter your retirement years. You both deserve a wonderful rest and we wish you God’s richest blessings in your rekindled joy of quality family life! Mrs Cassar, thank you for the sterling service that you have given to Eunice Pre-Primary School for the past 14 years. May your new role be blessed with happiness and joy. The Margaret Style Hostel continues to flourish with Mrs Wendy Dougall as House Mother. Our Hostel supervisors have rendered sterling service to the school this year. Our “home away from home” theme continues with happiness and contentedness. My sincere thanks must go to to our Dayboarding Staff, Mrs Pienaar, Mrs van Woerkom, Mrs van Wyk, Mrs Verschoor and Mrs Parodi for the excellent service that they have given to

Your commitment to Dayboarding is invaluable to our school.

And so, in closing, I encourage you all not to let anyone steal your dreams, or try to tell you that they are too impossible. Sing your songs, and dream your dream, hope your hope and pray your prayer. You are special, you are unique, you are eagles and I love you all dearly! Thank you. M. P. Dale | PRINCIPAL

Mrs Lizette Kotze started at Eunice Primary School in 2005 as the Grade 4 – 7 Art Teacher. She also taught EMS and Technology in Grade 7. Lizette’s Grade Two journey began in 2007 and has ended with 7 years of inspired teaching with many memorable and unforgettable moments. Lizette also started an Art Club in 2006 and has been part of the Junior Drama Club since 2007. Every year, without fail, her young drama queens bring home the distinctions and other accolades. Being such a versatile teacher, Lizette also coached U12 Hockey in 2005. Despite a rather busy Eunice life, her triplets were born in February 2006. A wife, mother and a dedicated teacher, Lizette has managed to make her mark here at Eunice and will be surely missed.

After 14 years at Eunice Pre-Primary we say a fond farewell to Teacher Moira. We wish her health and happiness during her retirement years. May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand. ~Irish Blessing

ducation gives children a firm foundation and helps them reach their full potential. Eunice Pre-Primary strives towards equipping every little girl with the basic social, emotional and academic skills needed for Grade 1. Eunice Pre-Primary is a very busy place for the girls and they are introduced to Cami Computers, class swimming, mini-hockey, ball skills and extra English classes.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated all over the world. On Friday 14th February, the Grade R learners were very excited to spend this special day with the ‘boys next door’, Grey College Pre-Primary. Looking so pretty with red ribbons in their hair, they walked across and met the Grey gentlemen. We spent a fun-filled morning singing and playing. Thank you Grey for a wonderful day! On Wednesday 16th of April, our girls came to school in very creative Easter hats and enjoyed a special visit from the Easter Bunny. There was great excitement when everyone got to paint and decorate an Easter egg which the Easter Bunny had given them. All little girls dream about what they will be when they ‘grow up’! During the Second Term, our Grade R classes discussed the theme “occupations” and had a fun dress -up day.

Our Grade R pupils also participated in the annual Fun Run which was held on Friday, 25th July. We definitely have some future athletes in our midst. The Grade R classes held a Cultural Dress-up Day on Friday 15th August. What a delightful day, with colourful outfits and delicious treats from around the world. Each young lady was also encouraged to donate a story book to the class library. Towards the end of the Third Term it was time for our annual concert, a highlight for any Eunice girl. Our theme was ‘Seaside Fun’ and fun they did have. And finally our year ended with our moving Graduation Ceremony. It was the first time our Grade R pupils have officially sung the school song, a memory they will hopefully cherish, as they travel the road as a Eunice pupil and finally bid ‘no other school so dear’, a fond farewell in 2026 when they matriculate! “Eunice, Eunice - no other school so dear. Oh! May she grow and prosper from year to changing year.”

The Official Opening was held on the Eunice Astro and was heralded by the first ever performance of the Eunice Pom Pom Girls. The participating teams were: Aliwal North Primary School Aliwal North Balmoral Primary School Queenstown Clarendon Primary East London Collegiate Junior School Port Elizabeth Durban Girls College Durban Erica Girls Primary Port Elizabeth Eunice Primary School Bloemfontein Kings Ridge Primary School King Williams Town Pelham Senior Primary Pietermaritzburg Rustenberg Girls Junior School Rustenburg Victoria Primary School Grahamstown Wynberg Girls Junior School Cape Town The object of such a sports festival is to pit skills as a pre-season building exercise, to make memories and lasting friendships based on common interests and to move in a circle of schools with a similar ethos. Each young lady that participated in the festival was special

with wonderful individual qualities that made her a focal part of each discipline that she participated in. The aim was to make the pupils realise that behind the athlete they have become, the hours of practice and the coaches who have pushed them, is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back … The realisation that challenges are what makes life interesting, overcoming them is what makes life worthwhile. Primary school pupils need nurturing and love to help them to achieve their dreams and the AllGirls’ Sports Festival is a wonderful platform for this to occur. The Closing Dinner was a tribute to all for the wonderful spirit of the festival and honouring the dreams and aspirations of 360 pupils from a cross section of the country. I would like to pay tribute to Mr Pat Uys, the Festival Director, for the tremendous effort he put into making the sports Festival such a tremendous success. My gratitude goes to Mr Eric Grobbelaar and the Primary School Staff for their commitment to the school and to the festival. Thank you to the Parent’s Association for seeing to the needs of the hungry and thirsty team members and spectators. Eunice Primary School coupled with the warm and friendly environment of the City of Bloemfontein salutes the success of the 2nd All-Girls’ sports Festival. May this initiative continue for many years to come. The 2015 Festival will be hosted by Clarendon Primary School in East London. We look forward to continued friendship.

I

t was a privilege for Eunice Primary School to host the “2nd” All-Girls Sports Festival for 2014. The school had a bumper response in the invitation to participate in the Festival. The interest and enthusiasm has given the festival style and excitement. Twelve teams participated in the Festival in five sporting disciplines and one cultural discipline (viz. hockey; netball; tennis; squash; cross country and chess).

unice has tremendous pupil participation in hockey, across all age-groups, in the Second and Third terms and we have our coaches to thank for maintaining this high level of interest. Mrs Blair, our Bursar, also puts a lot of additional effort into developing our Gr R pupils so that they have basic hockey skills by the time that they are in Grade 1!

ne of the highlights on the netball calendar was during April when teams took part in a Pre-Season round robin netball day. This is a day where teams can develop their skills and experience. Our teams did very well and learnt a great deal during these pre-season games. For the first time Eunice Primary hosted an All Girls Sports Festival, where the netball did extremely well by winning the tournament. Congratulations to our two u/12 players, Delien Kleinhans and SharnĂŠ van Zyl and two u/13 players, Refiloe Makenete and Anna Shaer who went through to the second round at the Southern Free State trials and Kgali Lehare who went through to the last round of these trials and was selected as a reserve for the u/13 Cheetahs team. You did Eunice proud! Mrs Carinda van Rensburg, our head of Netball was selected as the u/13 Cheetahs Team Manager and accompanied the team to the SA All Ages in Margate. Our teams did well during the season in their League Matches. Congratulations to the u/9 A team who won all their matches in their league and to the u/12 A team who came fourth and the u/13 A team who came third out of two pools in their leagues. FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS Eunice Primary hosted our very own Eunice Science Expo with all pupils from Grade 4 to 7 participating. We definitely have some budding Nobel winners in our midst. 48 teams were selected to attend the Regional finals which were held at the University of the Free State. Our ladies were on top form as they were interviewed by the judges, answered questions from the public and generally portrayed excellent Eunice manners. All the hard work, dedication and creativity paid off as everyone got received a certificate for participation from Mr Neil Alexander (Head of Free State Eskom Expo). We are especially proud of our 22 medal winners this year! Our gold medal winners were: • Tyla de Waal • Delien Kleinhans • Charleen Fourie Delien, Charleen and Tyla participated in the National Eskom Expo Championships in Gauteng.

unice Primary School girls to the power two was the brainchild of Mrs Karen Roberts, our Senior Mathematics teacher. Mrs Roberts felt that the training for the Mathematics competitions should be taken to a new level. Pre-selected achievers from Grades IV to VII are trained on a Friday afternoon by Dr Samantha Dorfling from the Department of Mathematics at the University of the Free State. Dr Dorfling’s main goal is to train these young girls for the competitions and in the process nurture a passion for Mathematics. The girls have been introduced in the classes to very basic combinatorial arguments, number theory, geometry, logic and algebra. Some sessions involved solving challenging problems and required active participation of the girls to present their proposed solutions to the rest of the class. Fridays have proven to be exciting and competitive, often with as many as six girls up at the board writing down solutions! A Mathematics Challenge day was introduced to the school on the 10 June 2014. The morning began with exciting lectures aimed at Grade 1 through to Grade VII. Special guest lectures included Mrs Dorothy Booth (Head of our Support Team at Eunice Primary) who introduced an innovative method of long multiplication to the school; Mr Ben-Eben de Klerk (a junior lecturer in Mathematics at the University of the Free State currently working on his PhD in Abstract Algebra) who spoke on “The Concept of Size and the Universe”; Ms Elizabeth Viljoen (part time lecturer in Mathematics at the University of the Free State currently working on her PhD in Graph Theory) who introduced our girls to “Sequences and Patterns”. The school day ended with a fascinating lecture by Dr Samantha Dorfling on “Fantastic Fractals”. In the afternoon a Mathematics Challenge consisting of multiple choice questions, as well as questions requiring proof methods, was held for teams of Maths enthusiasts from Grade IV to VII.. Before getting to grips with the challenge, the teams were given tips for competing in future Olympiads by an expert Mr Jon Smit (a part time lecturer in Mathematics at the University of the Free State currently working on his PhD in Graph Theory). The afternoon culminated in a prize giving which saw a Grade V team collect all the silverware! However win or lose the girls had plenty of fun and most of them left feeling great – with very new and excited attitudes towards Mathematics competitions. During our project week our headmistress, Mrs Dale, with her passion for Mathematics managed to fit in another morning of Mathematics. This time the lectures were aimed at Grade 00 right through to Grade VII. Guest lectures were presented to Grade 00 to II by Mrs Hermina Oosthuizen (part time lecturer at the University of the Free State) on Problem Solving; Grades III to V by Mr Sean van der Merwe (lecturer in Mathematical Statistics at the University of the Free State) on Data Handling and for Grades VI and VII by Dr Samantha Dorfling on “Functions and Relationships”. The morning proved to be fun and inspiring and hopefully some very little girls left with a seed that will later grow into a full blown passion for Mathematics.

I

t was with great anticipation that Eunice girls lined up to audition for the school’s first Pom Pom squad. A short routine was learnt and then they had to perform for selection. 16 Girls were selected by Miss Hollander and Mrs Stone to form the squad and needless to say, were bursting with excitement! The first performance was held at the All Girls Sport’s Festival, where they performed their hearts out! That was just the start to many more performances. With so much success, the Pom Pom group has expanded and they now consist of 24 girls! What lie for the future… you’ll just have to wait and see. Alison Peyper: “I do Pom Pom’s because it’s exercise but still lots of fun and we are trained by two amazing teachers! Learning the dance moves is hard work but doing it with your friends is worth it! You also make new friends.” Nthabiseng Seturumane: “It’s been my dream to do Pom Pom’s and when I got to Eunice, I got the chance to do it!” Bohlale Malimane: “Pom Pom’s is not just a dancing group but a family. Every little girl’s job is to help, inspire and most importantly love each other. Pom Pom’s also teaches you life lessons, like always doing your best, never giving up, keep on pushing and be different from everyone else. Every Pom Pom girl is considered successful in my eyes because they set a goal to work hard and working hard paid off for them. We shouldn’t look at the little things in our own eyes but in the eye of the one who created us and our beautiful talents.” FRONT: Orefemetse Selogilwe; Wisdom Holele; Milla van Heerden SECOND: Tshepang Letsaba; Mia Huang; Kaylynn de la Mare; Onga Gxalaba THIRD: Ms Chantell Hollander; Nthabiseng Seturumane; Monica Zacharia; Megan de Bruyn; Tarah Balia; Isibabale Maneli; Mrs Yvette Stone BACK: Lynn Meiring; Elrike Viljoen; Alison Peyper; Rethabile Matsaba

OUR PROJECT WEEK

T

he 2014 Magical Music Project Week was a highly successful and enriching week for all. The Official Opening to the week was exciting with spectacular musical items to set the tone for the week. The learning material throughout the week was interlaced with unusual and thought provoking presentations. Dr Dorfling (University of the Free State) organised and presented a number of enriching Mathematics presentations applicable to separate phases of the school. Mr Mario Lategan (Professional Singer) brought delight to the pupils with his presentations on Andrew Lloyd Webber, making use of a karaoke style presentation to showcase his magnificent voice. Mrs Christelle Swart introduced the Foundation Phase learners to CMATHS, an abacus method of Mathematics to enhance speed and accuracy in Mathematical calculations. The week incorporated the use of specially designed modules to include the various learning areas. Emphasis was also placed on craft work to give a creative flair to the

topic – “Musical Magic”. Project Week is aimed at education beyond the confines of the classroom and magical Music succeeded fully in this respect. The Fancy Dress Competition based on the theme is always a highlight to the week’s excitement. The 2014 Fancy Dress Competition was no exception. The music during the show was wonderful, the costumes were bright, exciting and applicable to the theme, the atmosphere was electric, the prizes sponsored by Party World were magnificent and a tremendous evening was enjoyed by all. I express my sincere gratitude to Mrs Maretha Krige and every staff member who made this week such a terrific success. Thank you to the parental community of the school for your support, encouragement and enjoyment of the Eunice Primary School 2014 Project Week.
