On the banks of the Breede River, nestled in the fertile Robertson valley, you will find Highlands Stud, one of South Africa’s premier thoroughbred nurseries. To produce good horses one needs four things; great pastures, world class stallions, quality mares and staff that are horsemen through and through. Highlands has all four in abundance.

he limestone rich pastures of Highlands have produced generations of thoroughbreds with exceptionally good bone, while the area’s cold, dry winters make them as tough as nails. While nearly 100 hectares of vast paddocks, provide ample room to run and strengthen those essential muscles. Highlands also has a long history of standing champion stallions, such as past greats Persian Wonder (GB), Elevation, Roland Gardens (IRE), National Assembly (CAN), Harry Hotspur, Bush Telegraph, Badger Land (USA) and Jallad (USA). These days multiple champion sire Dynasty calls Highlands his home, while newcomers Pathfork (USA), Jackson, Rafeef
(AUS) and Canford Cliffs (IRE) are set to follow in his footsteps. Knee-deep in the lush, green grass of the stud’s paddocks you will find a star-studded selection of local and international broodmares. Over the years Highlands has supplemented the stud’s bloodlines by purchasing yearling fillies and mares, mainly from the United States. This blending of South African and American bloodlines has produced a host of graded winners and is a practice that is still ongoing, with Highlands recently purchasing G3 winner Three Hearts (USA) in foal to Candy Ride (USA), at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. And if you are looking for true horsemen, Highlands is the

place to find them. Mike Sharkey has been on the stud for 26 years and he is ably assisted by a complement of staff, many of whom are second or third generation studhands. With over a hundred mares and several stallions in residence, it is a round-the-clock, hands-on operation. Hence it is no wonder that Highlands is renowned for producing outstanding, quality individuals, who reap the rewards for their owners on the racetrack. Since the early days of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale, held annually in the Cape Town International Convention Centre in January, a variety of Highlands-bred stars have passed through its auction ring. At the inaugural Cape Premier Yearling Sale in 2011, a dark brown colt by National Assembly out of Gardner’s Delight (USA), consigned by Highlands Stud as Lot 54, was knocked down to Shadwell South Africa for R350,000.Trained by Mike de Kock and named Soft Falling Rain, he would go on to win the G1 SA Nursery, earning him the title of 2012 Equus Two-year-old Colt, before an overseas campaign that saw him win the G2 Godolphin Mile on World Cup Day and the G2 British Champions Series Nayef Joel Stakes at Newmarket. Not a bad start for any stud at a new yearling sale.
Many more graded winners followed in his footsteps, all sold at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale. Grade 1 winners The Hangman, Pine Princess, Silver Mountain and Cloth Of Cloud, as well as graded stakes winners Franny, Daring Dave, Dynastic Power, Olympic Owen and Let It Rain were all graduates of the Sale. Not only were these yearlings bred by Highlands but often they were also by the stud’s resident sires. The Hangman being by Jallad, while Daring Dave, Dynastic Power and Let It Rain are all by Dynasty. The success continues with six Highlands-bred graded winners from the past season being graduates of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale. Lady Of The House, a stunning filly by Dynasty, won the G1 Woolavington over 2000m, while Eyes Wide Open, a Dynasty colt flew home in the G1 Premiers Champion Stakes over 1600m. Another Dynasty daughter, Smiling Blue Eyes, out of the Badger Land mare Sage Blue had a terrific season, easily winning the G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas and the G3 Fillies Mile, while the G3 Strelitzia Stakes went the way of Neptune’s Rain, a daughter of Antonius Pius. F R O M K E N YA T O K E N I LW O R T H V I A T H E C U R R A G H By Michael Clower, a byline attached to almost every racing article ever written in any of the Cape Town newspapers over the last eleven years. A quiet, well-spoken gentleman, Clower is well known and liked by all the trainers. Most racegoers will have crossed his path as he heads down the escalators at Kenilworth Racecourse on his way to interview yet another winning trainer or to find out just why their star colt ran so poorly. Always impeccably dressed in a suit and tie, as per the dress code of old, Clower’s only concession to working at the tip of the African continent is a dapper straw hat; a necessity on summer days when the sun gets a little too harsh. For you see, Clower originally hails from the cold and damp climate of England, where racing is conducted under perpetually grey skies and the dress code is absolutely not negotiable.

ew however know the man himself. Despite working alongside him in the Kenilworth media room for a number of years, our acquaintance was limited to asking which winners he needed me to send photos of and sharing the odd cup of tea at 4pm while we watched whatever English or Irish racing Tellytrack deigned to provide us with. A surprise find of a dusty book on champion hurdler Istabraq in a Newmarket bookstore and a chance notice of the announcement that a 71 year old had been crowned Irish Racing journalist of the Year, made me want to know more as the name Michael Clower was attached to both. Clower’s story is rather like that of a seafarer of old, crisscrossing the oceans, with brief stays on several continents, while unexpected encounters and life’s ups and downs dictate the journey. The Clower family business was that of funeral directors and for two hundred years R Clower and Sons ferried most of Nottingham to their final resting places. Upon the death of his great-grandfather, the four brothers sold the business for a small fortune. With plenty of money in his pocket, Clower’s grandfather decided to buy a string of National Hunt horses. 28

It was also a family business with his grandfather training the horses, while his father Dick rode them. Despite having horses around as he grew up, Clower wasn’t interested in racing at all, until a stay at a school friend’s farm as a teenager, where of course there was a horse. “Well I went from being led around very nervously, to cantering the thing around the fields after a week, dreaming of riding in point to points. From there I became hooked on racing very quickly. My interest was jumping to begin with, but then I became equally addicted to the flat”, Clower explains. Born into a racing family as such, it would seem natural for Clower to follow in the ‘family business’, but strangely his parents insisted that it would be best for him to become a Chartered Accountant. Clower takes up the story. “I was doing the five years of articles for Chartered Accountancy but all I wanted was to become a trainer, because after a fortnight of the accountancy I realised it wasn’t for me, but my parents wouldn’t let me give it up. Once my articles were completed, I had a job fixed up with Jonathan Sheppard, a trainer in America, but as soon as I started working with horses I quickly came to the conclusion that I didn’t have the necessary affinity with them to be a trainer or at least to make a success of it. As I didn’t know what to do, I went to an agency in London that specialised in putting Chartered Accountants in jobs

around the world.They said ‘South Africa is the place for you’ and sent me to Peat Marwick Mitchell (now KPMG). The man who interviewed me there said to me ‘why do you want to go to SA, why don’t you go to East Africa’. It was all the same to me, just a place on the map. But he had lived there and he described it to me. It sounded quite good, so off I went and naturally I drifted towards the racing.” Racing in Kenya in the sixties was of a much higher quality than it is today. British Champion Pat Eddery was a regular rider there and Beryl Markham, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic was one of the trainers. Markham was very successful sending out a string of champions and winning most of Kenya’s top races. Clower was in racing heaven and while he may have been an accountant, his passion was still racing. “It was cheap enough for me to afford a couple of racehorses and I rode them myself on the flat. I won three of my first six rides, but I never won another race again after that.” Those horses were also the catalyst for his fledgling steps into the world of racing journalism. A chance encounter set in motion a career that would span several decades and take Clower all over the world. “I was about 23 and one of the owners in the stable said that the racing correspondent for the main paper, the East African Standard was leaving the country and he had been
asked to replace him, but he didn’t want to. So I said ‘well if you don’t want to I would like to’. I didn’t really have any ambitions to be a racing journalist, but I didn’t think it was done very well and I thought it should be done properly. The sports editor however, was most reluctant to let me do it, as I had no journalistic experience and I had only been in the country about four months. He said ‘ok you can do it for the next two meetings’ and after two meetings he said ‘well you can carry on but if the other fellow comes back then he takes over the job’. “ The erstwhile scribe never returned and Clower continued to write for the East African Standard, whilst riding his horses in races. He got married to Tessa two years later and shortly afterwards suffered a very bad fall during a race. Badly concussed, he collapsed in the street the next day and Tessa wisely suggested that perhaps it was time to give up the riding and to concentrate on his writing. According to Clower, “It seemed a good idea and from then on I wanted to be a full time racing journalist”. The couple left Kenya in 1973 to return to the UK. Clower went to see various people at the Sporting Life and Timeform etc.They all said they would love to take him on, but a visit to Ireland, a place he had never been to before, changed everything. “The editor of the Irish Field said ‘if you can get a job in Ireland as an accountant, I can give you plenty of writing’. fellow called Jonathan Irwin, a bloodstock agent, who later became the boss of Goffs and he told me to come to Ireland.‘Don’t go to England, you have to be a Brigadier and 70 before anybody takes any notice of you’ he said.”
The move to Cape Town came at the instigation of his wife. Tessa pointed out that she had spent the first thirty years of her life in the sun in Kenya, the next thirty in cold and damp Ireland and she wanted to go back to the sun for the last bit. RESILIENCE AND INNOVATION IS KEY Everybody knows that we’re living through trying economic times, and the bloodstock market is not insulated in its own bubble against recession. Being resilient and innovative is key under these circumstances, so Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) are not making the error of lamenting the situation, but instead are making the right business moves to weather the storm.

he calendar was cluttered before with a whole bunch of auctions and whilst it seemingly made sense to offer a diverse selection of horses for a range of niche market segments, it just wasn’t working. The top end of the spectrum held up strongly, yet the response was underwhelming in the lower- middle bracket.

A major rationalisation of the sales program is an appropriate response. In the past, there were six sales under the CTS banner for yearlings and two year olds, spread out over the year and staged either in Johannesburg or at various venues in the Cape. A decision was made in September 2017 to snip the number of auctions by half, with all three events slated to take place in Cape Town.
The most striking trend was the strength of the upper market. Record –equalling, R6 million purchase (USD 461 538), Charles, came with a stallions pedigree being by Trippi out of a successful race-mare. Sovereign Sway, who fetched R5.75 million, was sired by Dynasty in a justifiable valuation given the excellent female line to complement this sought after top echelon producer.
The Cape Premier Yearling Sale is to remain in its popular January slot at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. It’s a challenging logistical undertaking that always proceeds remarkably smoothly, characterised by a great atmosphere at the auction itself, as well as the surrounding big Stakes races which happen in the midst of an idyllic Southern hemisphere Summer at Kenilworth racecourse. Sales dates to
In November, CTS concluded a most successful Ready To Run sale, staged at Durbanville. The 149 catalogued Lots realised an aggregate of R30 480 000 (over 2 million USD) at a most respectable average of R236 279. This RTR, or “breeze up” concept as it is known internationally, is now well entrenched and serves an important role in the promotion of bloodstock on advantageous terms to buyers.

Vendors in 2017 were pleased at the final aggregate realised of R155 225 000 (USD 12 million). Each year an increased presence of canny overseas buyers is noticed tussling with discerning locals to secure the most desirable lots. The average settled a fraction below 700K (USD 53 846) whilst a median price of R387 500 (USD 29 807) was attained.

In the midst of the buzzing auction, CTS Bloodstock Manager, Kerry Jack, exclaimed, ”It’s been a strong sale and we’re very pleased with the result.There’s been a good vibe here tonight with a broad buyers bench and a solid average attained, up on last year’s figures.” Indeed, the Ready To Run concept is well received in South Africa and has a positive recent history with notable graduates Captain America, Red Ray, Always in Charge, Safe Harbour, French Navy, Zodiac Ruler, Seventh Plain, Search Party and Ten Gun Salute all scoring in prestigious Graded races. The day after the sale, a daughter of Trippi, Miss Katalin just edged out Bold Respect in the R2.5 million Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes at Kenilworth, to secure the lucrative incentive offered to qualifying CTS graduates. Trained by Justin Snaith, she made a dramatic surge under Grant van Niekerk to deny front-running, Bold Respect. Looking ahead, as part of revised scheduling, the CTS March Yearling Sale will in future be integrated with the Emperor’s Palace Select Yearling Sale and held over three days on the 13th, 14th and 15th April in the Cape. This now includes a select offering for later maturing horses, to a value session with low costs to sellers, and buyers seeking value purchases.
The gathering will comprise three sessions. An evening Select Session followed by a quality selection of yearlings that would previously have been showcased on the old March yearling draft. All horses consigned here are eligible for the amazing CTS Millions incentive, excepting Day 3’s value hunters auction which features stock that won’t qualify for those big prizes. In other news, Cape Thoroughbred Sales has forged a strategic partnership by acquiring a major share of Kuda Holdings. Founder, Wehann Smith, who has also been appointed new CEO of CTS, will remain in charge of this dynamic insurance company which specialises in providing peace of mind at competitive rates for clients’ bloodstock assets, game and wildlife, together with aviation and international transit solutions. Kuda and CTS are a neat fit, and now that the joint deal has been formalised, Smith is strengthening their operational synergies. One of the most crucial issues affecting the viability of thoroughbred breeding and racing in South Africa relates to the issue of export protocols. Getting horses into the country can be done without undue drama, even if it’s costly due to the distances involved, but the whole debate revolves

around the practicalities of SA producers being able to ship out to other countries. Ostensibly for safety reasons, though commercial trading imperatives arguably play a “hidden” role in legislation enforced by foreign governments, SA horses are subject to careful scrutiny for the African Horse Sickness virus. Lengthy quarantine periods and arduous journeys are involved before they can legally move into certain countries. This has severely hampered efforts to export South African stock abroad. Think back to more accommodating times in 1997 when London News, who trainer Alec Laird got race-fit in South Africa, and, after testing clean, was allowed to zip straight over to Hong Kong for that famous victory in the Queen Elizabeth 11 Cup. The saga has been ongoing for many years with optimists seeing an imminent relaxation of the protocols as vaccines and testing becomes more advanced, and government gets properly engaged in the process. Pessimists may be disheartened by the lack of real change despite occasional encouraging statements. Seemingly, meaningful progress has been made in the last couple of years with the racing/ breeding lobby working in harmony with vets to reach a mutually satisfying agreement. According to CTS director,

Chris van Niekerk, “This is a vital juncture for all of us.” To wrap up on a buoyant note: As proof of the racing worth of CTS Graduates, they yielded 8 Grade 1 winners in South Africa for the 2016/17 season, together with 17 Grade 2 successes as 22 individual horses combined to rake in those trophies. That is an impressive haul! Brave Mary and Sand and Sea were juvenile winners at Grade 1 level whilst in the three year- old crop, Just Sensual, Lady of the House and William Longsword stood out amongst their contemporaries. Super race mare Carry On Alice managed to add another two Grade 1 victories to her stellar resume (SA Fillies Sprint and Flying Champs) before heading off to stud, and durable miler Captain America won the Gold Challenge shortly before turning seven. Buyers at up-coming CTS events will be looking to unearth similar talents. With the support of South Africa’s top stud farms, catalogues are filled with well bred and attractive stock across a sweeping price range. It would be delusional to ignore the challenges the industry faces, yet periods of uncertainty often prove an opportune time for investors to get involved on favourable terms. This multi-facetted and enduring racing game constantly beckons with loads of exciting possibilities.

Every seat was taken and many of the aisles were jammed, yet still more people tried to wedge their way into the room. Murmurs of anticipation swelled in the air like buzzing bees until there was a collective inhalation as she entered with a flourish, caped in red and tossing her head.

at a time, Porter’s face revealed a complex swirl of bittersweet satisfaction.
Several minutes later, she departed the scene with a few jumps, startled by bursts of applause aimed at her, the man she had inspired through a near death struggle with cancer and the woman bold enough to offer $9.5 million to obtain her.
“She gave me so much to look forward to—I so much wanted to see her run and to see just how good she was. I’ve never had a horse like her before,” Porter said, recalling how Songbird had lifted his spirits even when he lay near death in a hospital.
From the start of her racing career in 2015, twice champion Songbird has never been ordinary.
While she was racing at the closing stages of her career, which netted 13 wins in 15 starts and earnings of $4,692,000, Porter gained entrance to a clinical trial at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with the help of friend B. Wayne Hughes, owner of Spendthrift Farm.
Her sale by Rick Porter at Fasig-Tipton’s Newtown Paddocks in Lexington on November 6 was just the latest landmark in the brilliant life of the Medaglia d’Oro filly who roused high passion in fans and who now will go on to the next chapter of her life as a broodmare. As she exited the sale ring, Porter raised his right hand slightly to acknowledge the crowd’s clapping. Sitting just a few rows away from where Songbird had pranced and kicked as auctioneer Danny Green’s singsong chants recorded bids rising by $1 million
It is not easy to say good-bye to a treasure, particularly one that provided a spark to keep on living.
By the time Porter and his filly reunited at Fasig-Tipton, he was in complete remission. “It is an absolute miracle,” Porter declared. Also remarkable, within the realm of bloodstock, was Songbird’s sale to Mandy Pope, who did not give up bidding even when the

numbers soared over the budget she had set with her accountant.

“It’s a lot of money, but that’s a lot of mare,” Green observed from the podium.“What a beauty she is.We all thought she was worth every penny of this,” Collier added.
The following season, she was undefeated in seven starts until she waged one of the most memorable battles in recent racing history. Going shoulder to shoulder with older multiple champion Beholder, Songbird grittily held her own on the rail, losing by just whiskers in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita Park, and that courageous performance assured her champion three-year-old filly honors for 2016.
The $9.5 million it took to lead her out of Fasig-Tipton ranks second all-time for a broodmare prospect, behind only the $10 million it took to acquire 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace. In a rare synchronicity of such high-dollar transactions, Porter also had raced that mare and Pope also had been the buyer, with Taylor Made Sales Agency consigning both to the Fasig-Tipton November venue. Both Porter and Pope were counting their blessings just as much as the dollars following Songbird’s theatrical turn in the ring, which Taylor Made enhanced by blanketing the filly in a red cooler stitched in gold with her feats. The covering was removed prior to the start of bidding just as if a rare piece of art was being put on display in a museum. “I’m very happy with that. I wanted her to stay in America, and I know Mandy will take good care of her,” said Porter of the result while revealing that his reserve price was less than $5 million as he wanted the bidding to remain valid and encourage potential buyers. “She’s one of a kind,” he mused about Songbird. “She was something just unbelievable.”
Niggling pains caused by bone bruising took a toll in 2017, and while Songbird won her first two starts, both Grade 1 races, she was caught in deep stretch in the Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Edged by a neck by the mare that would go on to win the subsequent edition of the Distaff, Forever Unbridled, Songbird had run for the final time.

After conferring with veterinarians, Porter called an end to Songbird’s racing career. As the owner of Eight Belles, who shattered both front ankles so horrifically after finishing a game second to Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby, Porter did not want to endanger Songbird in any way by continuing to race her. In an unusual gesture, the owner sent his champion to Taylor Made Farm outside Lexington to rest—and to greet racing fans. A special event was held in late October during which hundreds of fans gathered at the farm and took turns posing for photos with the filly, patting her and feeding her carrots.
“I was not going to do it,” Pope said, shaking her head and almost giggling in a nervous euphoria. “I really had a budget and I didn’t keep to it. So, my accountant is not going to be very happy with me.”
Concurrently, momentum for her sale multiplied as Taylor Made released a video proclaiming her to be “the most accomplished broodmare prospect ever offered at public auction in North America.”
When asked why, after a long pause in the bidding, she made what proved to be the winning move on a $300,000 raise from $9.2 million, Pope thought for a moment and then said simply: “Because she was awesome.”
Pope was among those visiting the filly at the farm, just as she had done while falling in love with Havre de Grace five years earlier. By the time the bidding began, she found herself compelled to go higher, budget be damned.
A stunning dark bay splashed with white on her face and four socks, Songbird was foaled in 2013 by Grade 2 winner Ivanavinalot, who is by the Forty Niner stallion West Acre. Looking at her extended pedigree, she is yet another superlative example of what can happen when Northern Dancer descendants are crossed with Mr. Prospector blood.
“I’m just very blessed. I will never forget that—it is the most important thing,” Pope said, becoming emotional and thanking her family for the financial resources stemming from their chain of retail stores that have allowed her to buy bloodstock jewels like Songbird and Havre de Grace. “I’m very humbled by all of this. I never expected to be doing this—I never dreamed I’d be doing any of this.”
Bred by John Antonelli, the filly was purchased by Porter as a yearling for $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale. She quickly blazed through her races as a juvenile, romping to a championship title while never threatened in the 2015 Breeders’

She added that it also takes a degree of being “ornery” and an unyielding resolve to hold her own in the highly-charged sale world dominated by men.

In a relatively short time of buying bloodstock at the elite end of the market, Pope has proved to be a powerful auction adversary. She has acquired not only the two top mares from Porter but also the likes of Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty, champion Groupie Doll and Betterbetterbetter, the three-quarter sister to Group 1 winners Quarter Moon and Yesterday. She confided that prior to purchasing Songbird, she also had looked at another champion in the Fasig-Tipton catalog, Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Tepin, who made history by traveling to England to defeat males yet again in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
“What an awesome racemare and what can you say about her? She was awesome, she is awesome looking, and she is by Medgalia d’Oro, who I think is one of the best sires. I think there are genetics there for her to go on and make a good mama,” Pope said. “So, fingers crossed. “Lots of prayers are needed,” she added.
For the revitalized Porter, who does not breed horses and thus sells his colts and fillies at the conclusion of their racing careers (or earlier, as he did this spring with eventual Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner and Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Battle of Midway), Since she went over budget on Songbird, Pope said she could the cycle continues. He established himself as nothing less than the best horse on the planet going 1 ¼ miles on dirt when the major championships for 2017 were on the line.

is daring front-running display of speed and stamina under Florent Geroux in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, leaving old adversary Arrogate 6 1/4 lengths behind in a dead heat for fifth, clinched the American Horse of the Year trophy.
Capping a season in which he reeled off four consecutive and impressive Grade 1 wins after his second to Arrogate in the Dubai World Cup, Gun Runner’s feat also propelled the refined chestnut into the highest stratosphere with breeders. Light on his feet and capable of setting the pace or coming from behind while fired with a blend of blood that has proved supreme on three continents, Gun Runner is viewed as a horse with special sire potential. It’s a particularly promising bonus that his dam, the Giant’s Causeway mare Quiet Giant, is a half sister to 2005 Horse of the Year Saint Liam, who sired 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace in just one season at stud prior to a fatal accident.
racecourse in New Orleans—where trainer Steve Asmussen was to prepare him for his swan song in history’s richest race, the $16 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes set for January 27 at Gulfstream Park—esteemed French breeder Alec Head was among those assessing the new champion. “I wish he was mine,” Head said after patting Gun Runner on the nose and watching him walk like a panther on the prowl. “He’s a lovely horse, no doubt about it. And he’s got a good engine.” Chris Baker, chief operating officer at Three Chimneys, which owns Gun Runner in partnership with Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds, noted that the serene, intelligent attitude exhibited by the son of Candy Ride is another significant attribute. He expects no problems in transitioning Gun Runner from racing to breeding in the span of just about two weeks after the Pegasus, the same pattern followed successfully by 2014 and 2016 Horse of the Year California Chrome.
European and other international breeders flocked to see Gun Runner when he visited his future home at Three Chimneys Farm near Lexington for several days of inspections after his masterful Breeders’ Cup performance.
“The way he settled in here right away, within the first ten minutes after arriving, and the way he’s handled all the traveling, from New Orleans to Oaklawn to Dubai to Saratoga to Del Mar, flying, vanning whatever—he’s never gotten upset by any of it,” Baker said. “I think the change of routine from racehorse to stallion can challenge any of them, but he’s smart enough and adaptive enough that we’re going to be fine there.

from prospective breeders who came to the farm to see Gun Runner. “What’s been interesting to learn is how appealing he’s been to the Europeans.They love the way he moves.” For Baker, the connection with Gun Runner is personal as the colt comes from a female family developed by the late Edward P. Evans. Baker previously served as manager of Evans’s Spring Hill Farm in Virginia, where Gun Runner’s dam was foaled. Knowing his bloodlines so well and after witnessing Gun Runner float through the Classic on a tricky Del Mar racetrack surface that proved the undoing of Arrogate in three losing efforts after Dubai, Baker sees unlimited potential. “Because of the way he’s made, and that’s part of what makes him so appealing, he suits a broad spectrum. He’s a mediumsized horse with some elegance and length of frame, so big mare, small mare, I don’t think it really matters,” Baker said. “He also is fairly versatile from a breeding standpoint—Mr. Prospector line, Northern Dancer line other than Storm Cat, A.P. Indy—there are a lot of options of what you can breed him to. “Phenotypically and genotypically, he fits a very broad spectrum of mares. We’ll have fun sorting through all the applications and figuring out what’s best, and in the years to come we’ll figure out what really works,” he said.
The Argentine-bred Candy Ride, a champion in his native country and a Grade 1 winner in the United States, is currently America’s leading active sire.The international components of Gun Runner’s pedigree are amplified considering that his maternal grandsire, Giant’s Causeway, was a champion in Europe before becoming a leading international sire. Even while heading into breeding careers, Gun Runner’s competition with Arrogate, who was retired after the Breeders’ Cup and sent to owner Juddmonte Farms in Lexington, will continue. Juddmonte announced Arrogate’s 2018 fee as $75,000, and soon afterward, Three Chimneys released word that Gun Runner would stand for $70,000. Both farms have been busy gathering mares for the colts, whose rivalry began in the 2016 Travers Stakes, when Arrogate romped wire to wire and Gun Runner was 15 lengths to his rear in third. After Dubai, Gun Runner thrived while Arrogate inexplicably languished after his own run of four consecutive brilliant Grade 1 triumphs. Three Chimneys Chairman Goncalo Borges Torrealba said the farm will send many of its best mares to Gun Runner in 2018, including Grade 1 winners Pure Clan, Malibu Prayer and Stopchargingmaria. Those three mares were acquired at auction in recent years for a total of $9.3 million. INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

Additionally, Three Chimneys listed the dams of Grade 1 winner Twirling Candy, a successful sire son of Candy Ride, and champion La Verdad as mates for Gun Runner in his initial season. “I am a big believer in top families, and with two Horses of the Year in his first two dams, one could make a case that there is no more active or relevant pedigree in the stud book today than that of Gun Runner,”Torrealba said. Gun Runner was bred by Besilu Stables, which joined its bloodstock holdings with Three Chimneys in 2014. Winchell opted to join Three Chimneys in racing the colt. “I have been fortunate enough to own several great horses, but Gun Runner is clearly at the top of my list. He is the horse of a lifetime. His brilliance was recognizable early and improved with every season. His consistency, soundness and race recovery were comparable to none. These traits should serve him well as a stallion,” said Winchell. Considering that Winchell purchased Tapit as a yearling, raced him to Grade 1 success and has been deeply involved in that horse’s rise to status as America’s top sire, those are strong words. Yet no one holds more admiration for Gun Runner than Asmussen, the Racing Hall of Famer who has remarkably developed four Horses of the Year in just over a decade. His string began with Curlin, who reigned in 2007 and 2008, continued with Rachel

Alexandra in 2009 and now will include Gun Runner for 2017. “He doesn’t owe us anything,” Asmussen declared of Gun Runner. “He knows who he is, and he accepts it, and he feels up to it all the time.The confidence that he gives you is unbelievable.” Racing in the Pegasus would be a fitting conclusion to Gun Runner’s career. He was denied an opportunity to race in the inaugural running of the event in January 2017 when a quarantine was imposed at his Fair Grounds base due to an outbreak of equine herpes virus in another barn. Privately, the Gun Runner team is ecstatic about his chances in the 2018 Pegasus, believing that the sandy Gulfstream Park track and the 1 1/8 miles will provide the perfect scenario for a brilliant farewell to racing. Tentative plans had called for a return trip to Dubai for 2018 as well as another try in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but when Gun Runner crossed the finish in isolated splendor at Del Mar, those goals became superfluous. “I think everybody came to the conclusion that the smart thing to do would be to run him one more time and send him to the breeding shed,” said David Fiske, Winchell’s racing manager. “I’ll be sad not to see him race next year, because, frankly, he’s doing phenomenal. It’s not easy to put something away that is
working so good,” Winchell declared. “He doesn’t have any purses. There is an old saying that no one ever committed suicide with an unraced two-year-old in their barn. In Dean Kannemeyer’s case it is neither an unraced horse nor a two-yearold. It is an unbeaten four-year-old that has brought a smile to the master conditioner’s face and a tangible excitement to the yard. A bay colt named Last Winter. So why is a four-year-old, who has never run in any features causing such a stir?

ell it all started with a spirited bidding war at the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. When the hammer fell at R3.7 million for Lot 135, a colt by Western Winter (USA) out of the 2009 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Field Flower (SAF), even his breeder Peter de Beyer was lost for words. De Beyer explains that while he knew the colt was a serious horse, he was expecting around R1 million and had set the reserve at R800,000.
and De Beyer lost both the service and his money. He was hoping that a good sale would make up for it, but never in his wildest dreams did he expect R3.7 million! The purchaser was Khaya Stables and after a spell at Sorrento Stud in Paarl, Last Winter reported for duty at the yard of Cape trainer Dean Kannemeyer.
Kannemeyer takes up the story. “He was quite light framed as a two year old, so we took him to Durban for the season.� There, with Anthony Delpech in the saddle, he stormed home on debut, winning by two lengths over the Greyville 1200m. Not known as the Cape Guineas master for nothing, Kannemeyer thought he had a very exciting Guineas prospect on his hands. Then disaster struck. The colt kicked the wall in his box and De Beyer was keen to send Field Flower back to Western cracked his pedal bone. Sadly it was the year the stallion died a year before he could feasibly race again.

Now for some owners this would simply not be an option, but Khaya Stables were prepared to be patient. Kannemeyer admits that a large part of Last Winter’s success is due to the owner and her racing manager, Jehan Malherbe. “They allowed me to get on with the job. I grew up in these stables and my father always said: ‘Show me a good owner then show me a good horse.’ You need a patient owner, who leaves you to do what’s best for the horse, especially with a horse like this that got injured and was out for a year.” Box rest completed, Kannemeyer took Last Winter back to Durban, as he finds it easier to bring a horse back from injury there. The facilities at Summerveld are very good as well as varied, Kannemeyer explains. “You have a wide selection; grass, poly, sand and an uphill track. Here at Milnerton we have the cinders and 600m of sand. Look, we have trained many champions here, but we just have so many more options in Durban. In Durban I can rest a horse and bring
him back straight into a mile race after a year.” And that is precisely what he did. After an absence of almost a year, Last Winter and Delpech got up to win over the Scottsville mile in a MR 78 handicap in May this year. A step up in class to a MR94 was next on the agenda. Last Winter however, was unfazed, coming home lonely to win by 2.75 lengths, again with Delpech in the saddle. It was time to bring the colt home for the Cape Season, but what do you do with an unbeaten four-year-old that hasn’t run in any of the three-year-old features? Kannemeyer opted for a midweek MR98 mile at the new Durbanville track on October 18. And Delpech, who had never ridden at Durbanville, flew down specially to partner the colt. Kannemeyer agrees that Delpech is rather keen on Last Winter. “He spoke to me some time ago and asked to ride him. He calls him a proper horse. He came down to ride him the other day; it was his first time ever at Durbanville. He is retained by Wilgerbosdrift of course, but he wants to ride

Last Winter. So if there is a clash I will have to replace him, but as Jehan says, its worth the pain and suffering just to have him on the horse. Its not every day that the champion jockey flies down to Durbanville to ride a horse midweek. Yeah he is pretty excited about the horse.”
hence you have to look after him and do all the right things. I also have a lovely crop of 2yr olds this year, some really well bred horses. No trainer has ever committed suicide with a crop of 2yrs olds in the barn, or a boom horse”, he adds with a smile.
Kannemeyer admits that it is rather exciting to have a potentially good horse in the yard again. “Good horses are far and few between.The last year I didn’t have a really good horse. I had many winners but no big horse. So it is exciting to have a potentially big horse in my yard again. This year I have some really good horses. I am not a numbers player. I always want more horses, but I am a hands on trainer and I have very good staff. David Lilley has been with me for 30 odd years and Barbara Badenhorst, who runs my Durban yard, has been with us since we started at Summerveld.
So where to now? “Well I have entered him in all the features. I just have to box cleverly now. Obviously we are looking at the Sun Met, but between now and then I will be putting him in races. I will work it out day by day. So I am not exactly saying much, but I haven’t figured out the plan yet. Thankfully he takes his racing well. He is becoming a man, but he is a real gentleman and I am looking forward to the season with him. He has his whole career ahead of him. With all the classic winners I have trained I have always gone slowly, plotted my plan. There’s no point in getting overexcited, anything can happen, so I would rather keep my feet on the ground and take it day by day. Now all that is left is to put him to the test and see what he is made of. Watch this space!”

Bloodstock South Africa’s annual Cape Yearling Sale has long since been a consistent source of producing high-class racehorses
rom the likes of champion gallopers Pocket Power and Mother Russia, to recent Equus Champion Hammie’s Hooker, the Cape Sale annually uncovers a large source of subsequent graded winners –and also is a great source of value for buyers.
The 2015 Cape Sale unleashed a torrent of equine talent headed by such graded winners Doosra (G3 Graham Beck Stakes), Hack Green (G2 Umkhomazi Stakes), Green Pepper (G3 Magnolia Handicap), and Final Judgement (G2 Golden Slipper), as well as Listed Devon Air Stakes winner Maleficent.

G1 SA Derby runner up Pagoda was another high-class performer sold off the 2015 Sale, and that son of Mogok, a R100 000 buy, has currently earnings in excess of R760 000 to his name. However, it is L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and Sun Met hope Gold Standard who is the poster boy for the 2015 Cape Yearling Sale. The son of Trippi, who races for the Chrigor and Drakenstein Studs, has won or placed in all eight of his starts, with his wins including the G2 Selangor Cup. To date, the bay, also runner up in the G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas, has

earned over R870 000 with the promise of more to come. Just a year later, the sale produced feature race winners Princess Peach and Queen Forever (the latter subsequently named East Cape Champion 2YO Filly). With a number of well related, but lightly raced such as Surcharge, and Elusive Heart having also emerged from the 2016 Cape Sale, it appears safe to say the number of graded stakes winners will grow considerably in the months to come. The 2018 CapeYearling Sale will, once again, be held at the majestic Mistico Equestrian Centre, in the heart of the Cape Winelands Route. Mistico proved very popular with buyers and vendors alike in 2017 and hopefully can once again attract a large crowd of supporters. Last year, a Twice Over colt, named Cyclades, topped the sale, when he was knocked down to Bass Racing for R350 000. Top filly at the sale, was a daughter of Jay Peg, (and full-sister to G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Hot Affair), who was sold to trainer Duncan Howells for R240 000. RHODODENDRON AND MAGICAL ARE FLYING THE FLAG Bush Hill Stud acquired the handsome chestnut Flying The Flag in 2016 and whilst he is by arguably the worlds greatest stallion the world has ever seen, his damline is equally formidable – out a three-time Gr1 winning mare by a leading European broodmare sire in Pivotal.

An imposing chestnut stallion standing 16.2 with plenty of quality, athletiscm and a kind disposition, Flying The Flag retired a 3-time winner including the Gr3 International Stakes in Ireland and placed second in the stallion producing race, the Gr2 Futurity Stakes. The globetrotting chestnut raced in Ireland, France, England, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa also placed in top company in the Gr2 Jebel Hatta and the Gr3 London News Stakes over distances of 1400m – 2000m. Flying The Flag is closely related to the two-time Gr1 winning mare Photo Call in America; the winner of the First Lady Stakes where she defeated the great Tepin in the process by three lengths. Irish-bred Photo Call by Galileo is out of a half-sister to the dam of Flying The Flag, and sold for $3-million at the 2015 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. With the damline already including the likes of sire Verglas, Flying The Flag’s pedigree has been catapulted into the spotlight this year with his full sister Rhododendron and Magical.
Rhododendron and Magical are both trained by Aiden O’Brien and the elder of the two contributed to Aiden’s outstanding achievement of 26 Gr1 winners this year, bettering Bobby Frankel’s record. Galileo is the sire of 17 of those Gr1 wins. After placing second on debut, Rhododendron set about making herself known in only her third start where she defeated Hydrangea to take the Gr2 Debutante. She followed up with a third place in the Gr1 Moyglare, and followed through next time out to win the Gr1 Dubai Filllies Mile, running on comfortably to win by four lengths at a course where speed is a necessity to win. She was deservedly given a 212 day rest and started favourite in the Gr1 1000 Guineas under Ryan Moore, where she finished second to Winter. Hydrangea and Intricately finished towards the end of the field that day. Her next mission was the Gr1 Investec Oaks where she was not disgraced, finishing second to the great racemare Enable. Sporting a Timeform Rating of 116 and after another rest getting over a burst blood vessel on a hot June day, the first of October saw Rhododendron line up at Chantilly for the Gr1 Prix De L’Opera in leading European company. and rival Hydrangea, with Wuheida finishing fourth – the latter would go on to win at the Breeders Cup with Rhododendron closely behind after finding traffic problems in running. Aiden O’Brien describes Rhododendron as a special filly, whilst her jockey Heffernan said after her Chantilly Gr1 win: “I rode her a bit in the spring and I had her down as nearly being our number one.”
Boussac less than two lengths off. Timeform Rated at 109, she followed up with a place in the Gr1 Fillies Mile under Ryan Moore. There is no doubt that the combination of Galileo and Halfway To Heaven is a magical one and its no surprise that the mare has returned to Galileo since.
“She ran really well in an English Guineas and in an Oaks. We know why we got beaten now because the winner [Enable] won again today. She just felt good throughout the race today so I always felt in the last furlong I had a little bit to get to the winning post.”
Flying The Flag’s first crop have been born this season and have impressed breeders across the country, returning mares based on the outstanding size and quality of his foals. A few of the mares he covered in his first season included the dam of Gr1 placed and Hong Kong-bound Misty Burnam (herself by Verglas), as well as own sisters to Champion sire Jet Master and Dubai champion Vercingetorix.
In the meantime, juvenile full sister Magical has been filling her full sisters big shoes and secured the Gr2 Debutante the year after her sister won it. After placing second on debut, she won next time out and went on to defeat Gr1 winner Happily in the Debutante by over a length.
Bush Hill’s own exceptional family of Gr1 winners Zirconeum and Stellite, saw Plutonium (the dam of Orion Quest, Stella Mia and King Neptune) and Graded Stakes producing mare Look Sharp (Gr2 winner The Mouseketeer) covered, as well as Clifton Stud’s Ananova (Gr2 winner Bezanova).

MENDELSSOHN MAKES SWEET MUSIC IN AMERICA Coolmore Aims at Kentucky Derby with Breeders’ Cup Winner Aidan O’Brien already had achieved a global record for Group 1 victories with 26 in a single season of racing when he arrived at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in California and recorded yet another elite level triumph.

nd that victory could potentially be the most significant one of all during 2017 considering what might follow in the year ahead.
O’Brien conducted the magnificently bred and conformed colt Mendelssohn to an impressive score in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and Coolmore connections immediately set their targets on one of the world’s most elusive prizes, the Kentucky Derby. A $3 million yearling purchase, Mendelssohn has all the qualities for superstardom in the coming season, no matter what surface he races on or what countries he may visit on his journey.
“We always thought a lot of him,” O’Brien said after the Breeders’ Cup win, in which Mendelssohn drew away from 13 rivals after stalking the early pace from his rail starting position. “He’s a late foal, but physically he’s very big and strong, and every week he’s getting better.” The Irish maestro also revealed that the colt, who was a mid-May foal named after Romantic era composer Felix Mendelssohn, was immature in his previous races, including his runner-up effort in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes to stablemate U S Navy Flag.The addition of blinkers helped the colt focus, and O’Brien suggested that Mendelssohn could be even better on dirt—hence, the Kentucky Derby dream.
“We knew that he was kind of an American dirt pedigree horse. But we felt we didn’t want to stop the progression— A son of the late Scat Daddy—whose progeny have become that’s why we left him on the grass rather than putting dirt ever more cherished since his sudden death at age 11 in in on top when he wasn’t ready for it,” O’Brien explained of 2015—and a half brother to the incomparable champion running Mendelssohn in the Juvenile Turf rather than in the Beholder as well as to young sire phenom Into Mischief, Juvenile, a race won so impressively in 2001 by his grandsire Mendelssohn has unlimited potential. “We had it in our head that if everything went well, (Mendelssohn) could be a horse we could train for the Kentucky Derby,” O’Brien said. Jockey Ryan Moore was full of praise for Mendelssohn, whose win marked the fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf for both the rider and for O’Brien. “He traveled very kindly the whole race. He always felt like he was going the best, and he was able to ease his way out. And I feel he still had plenty to give. When he hit the front, he wasn’t quite sure how to get down and gallop yet. So, I think there’s more to come from him,” Moore said. “He’s a big, very raw horse still, and I think he will improve with racing and with experience.” O’Brien and Coolmore’s Michael Tabor noted that there are now three prep races in Europe in March, with two in England and one in Ireland, that yield points for the Kentucky Derby under the qualifying system instituted by Churchill Downs. Additionally, Dubai’s $2 million UAE Derby on March 31 also

is a possibility for Mendelssohn in the hunt for points to gain entrance to the Run for the Roses in Kentucky. “We wouldn’t have to come (to the United States) until the Kentucky Derby, and (we would) try to give him an easier time as we got up to it. That’s what we’ll think about, anyway,” O’Brien said. While there clearly could be much more to come from Mendelssohn, his story already is the material of storybooks. The only reason he is here today as a potential breakthrough for the Coolmore team in the Kentucky Derby chase is that his dam, the Tricky Creek mare Leslie’s Lady, lost her first fetus conceived for 2015. Mendelssohn’s life began on a second mating in 2014, recalled Fred Mitchell of Clarkland Farm, breeder of the outstanding colt as well as of Beholder. “She had an Eskendereya filly who colicked at two months old and had to have surgery and it didn’t work. The old mare was pregnant with a February foal to Scat Daddy, and when

we took her to the hospital, she absorbed that foal,” Mitchell said. “So, we had to breed her back and that’s the reason we got a May foal.” Mendelssohn turned out to be such a good specimen that he defied the usual commercial market bias against late foals and those born to older mares; his dam was 19 when he was delivered. “He’s a very good mover, he’s very good looking and from a very good family. We’ve had a lot of luck with Scat Daddy in the past and hopefully it will continue,” Coolmore’s M. V. Magnier said immediately after signing the $3 million ticket for the colt at the 2016 Keeneland September sale.The price was the highest at that auction since 2010. Mitchell observed at the time that the colt was outstanding in every respect, and the sale price doubled his reserve of $1.5 million. “I don’t think anybody could have the disposition this colt has and the conformation he’s got—you couldn’t get a better individual anywhere,” Mitchell said. “He took five days of showing and never missed a beat. The way he moved—it was

like he was on air all the time he was out there, striding out unbelievably.” Mendelssohn is striding out even more beautifully now in his racing career, with a level of experience and the aid of blinkers factoring in his progression to the Breeders’ Cup winner’s circle. He earned a vacation after that triumph, O’Brien said, adding, “Hopefully, he’s an exciting horse for the future.” The bonus with Mendelssohn is that he is by Scat Daddy, and Coolmore has been seeking a replacement for the outstanding sire since he passed away. The operation retired American-bred, multiple Group 1 winner Caravaggio for his first stud season in 2018 in Ireland, where Group 1 winner No Nay Never also stands, but also desires a standout son to take his sire’s place at its Ashford Stud in Kentucky. “I think it goes without saying we’ve been looking for the next Scat Daddy, because in his short life, he was a great stallion, and hopefully this fellow will do the trick,” Tabor said of Mendelssohn. “I think one or two people quibbled about his yearling price, but I don’t think they’re quibbling now. So that in itself is satisfaction. Hopefully he’ll be the next Scat Daddy.”

AT IFHA CONFERENCE
The 51st International Conference of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) took place in Paris on the 2nd of October, with the IFHA Executive Council unanimously reaffirming its commitment to a stringent antidoping policy. IFHA Chairman Louis Romanet was authorised by the Executive Council to directly engage with the various racing jurisdictions in order to emphasise the importance of the policy’s implementation.
T
he Executive Council also specifically endorsed the updated protocols put in place by the Breeders’ Cup ahead of the upcoming 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships in Del Mar, California.These protocols include out of competition testing of potential starters and are in alignment with Article 6E of the IFHA International Agreement’s restrictions on the use of anabolic steroids and other proscribed substances. Horses disqualified for violating the principles of Article 6E will henceforth be excluded from the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings list. Romanet reminded delegates of the IFHA’s drug policy: “Horses should compete only when they are free of medication and drugs. Doping undermines everything that we want to achieve relating to fair competition, integrity, the welfare of racehorses, the safety of jockeys and the development of strong bloodlines in the Thoroughbred breed. In Article 6E of the IFHA International Agreement, we have articulated the substances which should not be administered to a racehorse at any time in its career and the out- of -competition testing requirements necessary to
ensure fair competition, transparency, welfare, safety and sound breeding. Looking around the world great progress has been made in implementing these requirements. And yet there are some countries in which more needs to be done.” In summary Romanet emphasized five points which he considered critical to the implementation of a successful antidoping policy. These are the harmonization of drug rules, full traceability of horses, out of competition testing, the accreditation of at least two IFHA reference laboratories on each continent and sample testing of all G1 races in Part 1, with any positives leading to the disqualification and exclusion from the Longines World Rankings. South Africa featured prominently in the first open forum, with Andrew Harding, IFHA Executive Director, updating delegates on the efforts of the IFHA working committee towards improving the movement of horses across the world. Harding used South Africa as a case study, giving a brief introduction to the country’s racing and breeding history as well as the current issues that exist in exporting horses from South Africa. went on to explain that significant progress had been made, with discussions of the issues around AHS and South Africa held in December and at a high level specialised workshop with leading role players, recently held in Johannesburg. In conclusion Harding reiterated the IFHA’s commitment towards finding solutions and that real progress is being made around the world to improve export conditions not only for South Africa, but also for other member countries. The aftercare of racehorses is very much on the radar at the moment and Jim Gagliano, IFHA Vice Chairman and COO of the USA Jockey Club, provided the delegates with an update on the 2nd International Forum for the Aftercare of Horses (IFAR) and the latest developments in the aftercare of retired racehorses. The welfare of racehorses throughout their lifetime is becoming one of the greatest issues facing the racing industry and Gagliano emphasized the need for racing to start taking aftercare seriously. IFAR, a concept initiated by Godolphin, held its second conference in the USA recently, where all aspects of thoroughbred aftercare were put under the spotlight and discussed by the global attendees.Traceability, a proper exit strategy out of racing and an understanding of the animal welfare spectrum were highlighted as the areas of greatest importance. Ray Paulick, Co-founder and publisher of the well-known Paulick Report reminded delegates that expecting charitable organisations to take care of all retired racehorses was simply not feasible. Racehorses need to be let down slowly, any injuries need to heal before retraining for a second career can begin and all that costs money. Hence the racing industry needs to step up and take charge. Paulick concluded by pointing out that the time has come for racing jurisdictions across the globe to set up and implement proper aftercare programs for the lifetime care of retired racehorses. The conference concluded with a session titled “Challenges facing the European breeding and racing industry”. Brexit and the immense problems it will cause when Britain leaves the EU were firmly placed in the spotlight. Dr Paul-Marie Gadot, Co-chairman of the European & Mediterranean Stud Book Liaison Committee, confirmed that the current Tripartite agreement, which governs the free movement of racehorses between England, France and Ireland and which has been in place since the 1960’s, will fall away once England leaves the EU. According to Gadot: “The EU negotiator’s position is simple and it has not changed: on March 29, 2019, the UK will be a third country and the tripartite agreement will no longer exist.”

Gadot pointed out that the need for mutual recognition of a common, high-health status for thoroughbreds and their respective Stud Books is of utmost importance, as well as the negotiation of a new system allowing easy movement between the three countries. Gadot concluded by pointing out that Britain, Ireland and France were already working closely on a common position and are committed to finding a workable solution. He did however caution that any common position reached, would still have to be voted on by all the EU member countries.Thus while an effective transport solution may be agreed upon by England, France and Ireland, its implementation and acceptance by the EU may not be as straight forward. 84

A ROOKIE GOES JUMP RACING Cheltenham, considered by many to be the best racecourse in the world, is the home of National Hunt racing, known to us philistines as jump racing. And while I have raced on most continents and pretty much everywhere that there are Group 1 flat races, I have never been jump racing. I even attended a Swedish trotting festival and somehow ended up flying through a forest on a sulky with a trotter firmly attached to the reins in my hands, but jump racing has firmly remained on the bucket list. Partly due to the fact that it takes place in winter and a year living in the UK firmly cured me of ever being in said country past October and partly due to the timing.

heltenham’s crown jewel is known simply as The Festival and takes place in March, which kind of clashes with the Dubai World Cup for me. The course also hosts several other top meetings such as The Showcase, The International and the one yours truly is attending, the November meeting, held over three days in mid November. On announcing that I would be making my debut at the November meeting, I was besieged with dire warnings from my racing counterparts. Its muddy, it rains all the time, its winter you know, its freezing cold, you don’t have the right clothes etc., the list of why nots was endless. Actually I sort of had the right clothes, courtesy of my trip to the White Turf at St Moritz in February this year. There was just one problem. In St Moritz it either snowed or was sunny, hence there was a decided lack of waterproof jackets. But never fear Robinsons’ online shop sells a vast variety of clothing designed to keep riders dry in the direst of English and Irish weather. Mission accomplished as I became the owner of a navy blue, waterproof and windproof Jack Murphy Cotswold coat, complete with heritage lining (an orange and green coloured tweed if you need details) and a detachable hood similarly lined. Now Cheltenham just like Royal Ascot has a fixed dress code when it comes to big events. There is however one major exception. When dealing with inclement and unpredictable winter weather, there is no place for high heels and hats, or for top hats and tails. No, National Hunt racing has a dress code all of its own. For the gents a tweed coat is preferred, of course in any colour as long as it is olive green, navy blue or brown. Trousers should match, but footwear is far more important, with waterproof boots a must. To complete the outfit a felt hat or tweed cap keeps the head warm and more importantly, dry. The ladies on the other hand are allowed to wear either tweed or felt when it comes to coats as long as it is in one of the four allowed colours, olive green, navy blue, brown or mulberry (commonly known as burgundy). To crown one’s head a felt hat with pheasant feather, a fake fur headband or if absolutely necessary a woolly bobble hat may be donned. Footwear consists of knee high leather boots, preferably with the shoe section being waterproof. Scarves and gloves can be added should the temperature require it. And if the heavens open and a deluge ensues, then waterproof coats in the allowed colours of olive green, navy blue, brown or burgundy may be worn over said outfit. Apparently tweed jackets are waterproof or the gentlemen just didn’t care as I saw very few overcoats on display.

Dressed? Right, time to go jumping. National Hunt racing is divided into two major branches - hurdles and steeplechases. Hurdles are angled fences with a minimum height of 3 foot 6 inches and are usually made of brush. Steeplechase fences are far more solid and also higher, with Cheltenham’s fences around 4 foot 9 inches. A steeplechase course usually consists of plain fences, a water jump and open ditches. Cheltenham has a hurdle course as well as a steeplechase course, while the inside of the course has a variety of cross-country jumps. Both hurdle and steeplechase races are divided into categories based on a horse’s age and experience. National Hunt horses are mostly purpose bred with several National Hunt stallions standing at stud. The general idea is to breed a horse with tons of stamina, as most jump races are in the region of 2 to 3.6 miles (3200m - 5800m) and the courses are anything but flat. Having to run for days, go up and down hills and over obstacles all at the same time, National Hunt horses are usually more solid in stature and much taller and broader than flat horses. Think weightlifters versus ballerinas and you get the picture. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it. There is however one more factor to consider and that is the weather. Had I

been smart and only attended day one of The November Meeting, The Countryside Race Day, I would now be extolling the joys of racing in glorious sunshine with the exquisite autumn colours of the English countryside as backdrop. The sight of the Warwickshire Hunt and their pack of hounds in full cry, charging down the home straight, with the Master leading the way, just added to the country theme. Finally steeplechasers and hurdlers flying over fences, their coats a burnished copper in the afternoon sun, just sheer delight. But smart I was not. Hence I bravely donned three layers of clothing, added my waterproof Cotswold coat, donned my knee high, fur lined, waterproof boots and set forth in the rain for Day Two of the November Meeting. Now rain, fences and galloping, heavy horses equates to one thing and one thing only, mud. And mud makes for slippery conditions, which in turn makes for muddy horses, muddy riders, flying clods of earth, spectacular attempts by riders to stay attached to their horses and spectacular attempts by horses trying to stay on all fours after landing. And all of that makes for incredible photos, well that’s if you can actually see the horses through the driving rain and lets not talk about the mammoth effort involved in keeping cameras dry. Waterproof covers, towels, a chamois

hidden deep in an inner pocket for drying foggy viewfinders and freezing cold fingers. The one thing that cannot be waterproofed is a finger. Sadly the sensitive shutter release does not obey gloved ones. So have I written off the sport of National Hunt racing? Not in the slightest. It is thrilling, it is glorious and its winners are celebrated in a way never seen before. John Neild, owner of Gold Cup winner Splash Of Ginge, doing a happy dance in the rain; the horse’s faithful followers, the Ginge Army, in full cry as they welcomed their champion home, complete with a Ginge Army flag, a muddy Tom Bellamy, his jockey, carried shoulder high around the winner’s enclosure and Splash Of Ginge standing in a cloud of steam, ears pricked, head high, while his groom gives him an exuberant hug and a kiss. I loved the sunshine and I loved the rain, the tweed and the dress code. I loved the speed of hurdle racing, horses stretched horizontal in mid air, ears pricked. And I loved the boldness of the steeplechase, horses and riders flying over heights that I, as an eventer, never dared to attempt. Jump racing is something special, something that cannot be explained and hence all I can say is if you haven’t been, you should make a plan. Cheltenham’s 2018 November Meeting is the perfect place to start and guess what? I will be there.

ABOUT HHCU AND HARRY THE HORSE Established in 1991, HHCU (Highveld Horse Care Unit) is the largest equine welfare organization in South Africa, and is involved in any matters relating to equine welfare, such as: • Re-homing horses and donkeys to suitable homes on a special adoption policy • Owner education and equine medical clinics in underprivileged areas • Investigating and resolving cruelty/neglect complaints • Hospitalizing horses and donkeys where owners cannot afford treatment OUTREACH PROGRAMME A major focus of HHCU activities is the concern of the working horses/donkeys from the township and rural life throughout South Africa. Animals are often poorly treated as a result of lack of education and poverty rather than deliberate neglect or abuse. The Unit sends trained inspectors into the townships and rural areas to educate owners and to provide them with support in the care of their animals, including help with harnessing, feeding, vaccinations and de-worming. The Unit also collects old and unwanted tack from the horse community and give this to under privileged owners to ensure humane use of their animals. 94

HARRY THE HORSE “A very special teddy, for a very special cause” On the 28 April 2013 at the TBA National Yearling Sale the horse teddy was just a mascot at the Highveld Horse Care Unit stand until someone wanted to buy him. TBA offered to auction him to the highest bidder, and the money raised would go to the Highveld Horse Care Unit. He was bought for R6 500 by Cape Thoroughbred Sales. Amanda Carey came up with the idea of making copies of him and using them to help raise funds for the Horse Care Unit and from there it all began and the campaign of Harry the Horse became alive. He now has his own Facebook Page (Harry The Horse). He goes to auctions and looks for sponsors to events all in the aid of charity. After an auction or a sponsorship, the Harrys go and live with their sponsors. His highest price at an auction is R125 000 in 2014. With each passing year, Hermitage Farm in Goshen, Kentucky hosts lavish social events, weddings, Kentucky Derby parties and sporting competition. Plans are in place for the farm to expand and become a popular tourist destination in the next two years.

W
alk through the doors of Hermitage’s main office, however, and as you approach the front desk you will see them. Framed memories. Snapshots in time. Reminders of a heritage which began to take root in the mid 1930’s and focuses on — the horse. Lining an office wall are photographs of Thoroughbred champions across nearly 70 years who have called this 700-acre estate home. Their accomplishments placed them for a time near the top of the horse racing world. They took home trophies for the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the 2000 Guineas Stakes and most recently, the Travers Stakes at Saratoga. Hermitage was home to the most expensive yearling ever sold at a public auction and also North America’s leading sire of 1980. Located near Louisville and 80 miles west of Lexington and the heart of Bluegrass country, Hermitage Farm boasts a tradition on par with most of the large Kentucky farms. And to think it all began nearly two centuries ago. Beginnings The farm was purchased by Captain John Henshaw back in

the early 1800’s as part of a Virginia land grant and was gifted to Henshaw’s son Phillip Telfour Henshaw. Construction began on the main house at Hermitage in 1832 and during this time, Phillip, wife Sarah and children returned to Virginia to visit family. While there, Phillip fell ill from scarlet fever and died, leaving Sarah a widow with three small children. Sarah returned with the kids to Kentucky and Hermitage where construction was completed on the home in 1835 and she lived on the farm for the rest of her life. Daughter Lucy Mary Jane married Richard Waters in the mid-1800’s and oversaw the daily operation at a time when some 40 slaves lived and worked on the farm. All in all, Hermitage was owned by the HenshawWaters family for nearly 100 years until it was sold in 1935. The buyer was a 19-year-old young man whose great-greatgreat uncle was the founder of the Kentucky Derby. And soon, this young man would leave his own imprint on the history of thoroughbred racing. Warner Upon purchasing Hermitage, Warner L. Jones Jr. farmed the land and began his Thoroughbred operation with a single yearling. And then he added a mare and loaded the yearling on a train to Saratoga Springs and sold it. It was a simple beginning on a road that would see Hermitage become one of the most

famous Thoroughbred farms in America. Seventeen years later, Jones’ operation had increased significantly and one of his Hermitage-bred three-year-olds entered the starting gates as a 25-1 longshot in the 1953 Kentucky Derby. The colt’s name was Dark Star and faced the daunting task of going up against the spectacular Native Dancer who entered the Derby unbeaten in eleven races. Dark Star broke early, held a clear lead throughout and held off Native Dancer’s powerful finish to win by a head. It was one of the biggest upsets in Derby history and Hermitage Farm was suddenly on the industry map. In 1967, Hermitage added the Kentucky Oaks to its resume when Nancy Jr. captured the trophy. Perhaps the most significant driver of Hermitage Farm’s breeding success from the day Warner Jones came to the farm to present day was the outstanding broodmare barn Jones assembled along with fellow horseman William S. Farish III and other partners including Robert Clay. At the close of 1972, a stallion came to Hermitage who would take the farm to the highest level of Thoroughbred breeding across the world. His name was Raja Baba.The horse was a purchase by Will Farish who in turn sold a half interest to Warner Jones. He was syndicated in 1972 in a 36-share deal at $10,000 per share. Ten years later, that selling price had increased to $205,000 per share on the open market and later on in his career, a share reportedly sold for $380,000.
As a freshman stallion in 1976, Raja Baba was the leading juvenile sire and four years later, he became the overall leading sire in the United States. Bill Landes is the General Manager of Hermitage today and joined the farm in 1977. He still looks back with amazement at that special time. “1980 was a really special year,” recalls Landes. “Raja Baba could do no wrong. We had a stakes winner in America seemingly every week. And it seemed the horses we sold that went overseas to run in France, Ireland or England were winning a stakes race every week as well. It was enough to spoil you and cause you to take it for granted. But looking back now, I marvel because of how difficult it is nowadays to get a winner anywhere. It was truly remarkable.” Unparalleled Success Raja Baba died in 2002 at the age of 34. During his career at stud, he had sired 62 stakes winners, two Breeders’ Cup winners and two champions. He brought attention to Hermitage over the years that opened other doors to success. In 1985, Warner Jones sold a half-brother to the Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew for a world record $13.1 million at Keeneland’s July Select Yearling Sale. The yearling’s name was Seattle Dancer. In that same year, Hermitage Farm set a record for the highest average price — $2,433,750 — for horses consigned for sale. It is a

record that still stands. Two years later, Warner Jones sold most of his breeding stock at Keeneland in a dispersal sale. Across his career as a breeder, Jones sold a dozen yearlings for prices in excess of $1 million and 130 stakes winners with total earnings of more than $20 million.

We offer family-friendly activities, greater food options, and the competition level has been so high that it is really fun to experience.” The Future When Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown acquired Hermitage, their long-term objective was to create a tourist destination that would celebrate the heritage of Kentucky and its signature industries — food, bourbon and horses. A large scale agri-tourism project is underway with construction beginning in December of 2017 and it is hoped the grand opening will be during the Kentucky Derby weekend of 2019. Hermitage hopes to draw tourists with a “farm to table” restaurant and a Kentucky bourbon experience. “The ‘farm to table’ term is really about feeding people seasonally depending on what is growing at that time,” says Haviland Argo, project manager for Hermitage. “The restaurant will be a 9,000-square foot space within our current Barn 8 and will seat close to 175 people with outside event space that can seat another 250.” The bourbon experience will offer tourists tastings of all the bourbons that are on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.“Visitors will be able to sample the various tastings and then purchase a bottle of

whatever bourbon they like best,” added Argo. The farm has commissioned an artist to begin work on another long-term project and this is a nod to Steve and Laura Lee’s love for art. “The artist will create a studio projection-with-sound experience on a boardwalk next to a creek at the back of the property,” says Argo,“The artist uses high definition projectors to project off of trees, hillsides, rocks, and pools of water to create a totally immersive atmosphere.” There is certainly excitement in the air at Hermitage Farm with growing anticipation of expansion and tourist counts in coming years. But a new photograph has recently been added to the office wall in the main office at Hermitage. And multiple grade one winner West Coast is symbolic and a reminder of the heart and soul of the farm’s heritage since Warner Jones bought his first yearling back in 1936. In an industry that has seen its share of struggles in recent years, life goes on at Hermitage. “We went to the November sales in Kentucky thinking we might sell 2-3 mares and may not replace them,” says Bill Landes,“But we actually ended up increasing the number of boarding mares postsale. I think our population is stable at worst and that excites me.” Warner Jones would likely be excited as well.
