STORIES FROM

Stopher Walk

The polished perfection spectators see in Freedom Hall each year is occasionally the result of unique and rapid problem solving in Stopher Walk and the “Make –up ring”. It is our desire to unearth some of these anecdotal stories and share them with our readers.

Malissa Welke

Jessica and Top Beat

Malissa Welke:

Jessica Moctezuma:

I tried out a pleasure horse in the middle of the night late in the week one year. My trainer and the selling trainer stayed in Freedom Hall chatting, and as soon as I hit Stopher Walk the horse began to stand on his hind legs and paw the air. It was like a deserted island, nobody around to help. I kept him headed down the walk leaping and rearing when I finally spotted Patty Milligan at the end of Stopher Walk.

It was Thursday night, right after my ride in the Senior Equitation Championship at Louisville back in 2008, when I was showing as a 16-year-old. The class always takes a while, with the rail work and patterns, and we had been in the ring for about an hour and a half. I ended up finishing 8th with a standing ovation – I had a near perfect pattern on my horse, Top Beat, which had been antsy and excited during the class. My adrenaline was pumping as we were heading back up the chute and down Stopher Walk towards the barns. I was riding my horse down Stopher Walk, and you know I had on my nice tux, the white gloves and everything. All of a sudden, I look down and I notice blood dripping down my nose, and all over my nice white gloves and white shirt. I’m fine with blood, but with that, I passed out. And the next thing I knew, there was Grant Shiflet and Reece Richey, holding onto me and I wasn’t on the horse anymore. For a 16-year-old girl to come to surrounded by those two young trainers, it wasn’t that bad! It surely could’ve have been a lot worse, and it certainly was a moment I will never forget!

Patty jumped off of her scooter and literally saved my life. Patty in her typical Patty style kicked me off the horse and marched him all the way back up to Freedom Hall to let my trainer and the selling trainer have it for letting me take that outlaw back to the stalls alone. Every year I would send Patty a thank you note for literally saving my life that night. I miss Patty. It was definitely was a lesson learned to never ride a horse you don’t know without someone around to help you!

ASF 2015 AFRICA SADDLE HORSE FUTURITY

W

hen the 2014 winner, Coco’s Justice, was announced, many people thought that it could not get any better – the cream of the crop foals for 2015 ASF competition proved all of them to be wrong. On Monday, 20 April 2015, fourteen foals, each one of them a potential winner, entered the arena at the Bloemfontein Show for the fifth ASF. The 2015 ASF panel of judges consisted of Mr. Jim Lowry, his wife, Mrs. Fay Lowry (Seymour, USA), Mr. Jaco Jonker (Koppies, RSA), Mr. Wim Bester (Pretoria, RSA) and Mr. Francois van der Merwe (Graaff Reinet, RSA). To ensure transparency, the judges used score sheets and the foals were judged on an individual basis. The names of the ten foals that would compete in the final were announced during a function on 20 April 2015.

The final judging took place on Thursday, 23 April 2015. The quality, condition and turn-out of the foals have over the past five years improved with every competition. It is a pity the final takes place early in the morning when the stands are virtually empty. Few spectators have the opportunity to attend the class and consequently fail to experience this class with the best prize money at the show. Touch Me Nice (Touch Me Twice x Valley’s Starmaker) of Jaco de Bruyn was eventually awarded the Sir Clarence Ronald Trophy and a winner’s cheque of R60 000. The owner of the stallion, Touch Me Twice, Jacques Strydom of Human Auto, received the R10 000 prize and the War Image Stallion Trophy. The owners of Limited Assignment (Wim van Bergen) and Riverman (Piet Moller) respectively won R5 000 and R3 000.

The complete results as well as the earning of the top ten foals are as follow :

2015 ASF Winner, Touch Me Nice

This year another impressive trophy, the Uncle Angus Memorial Perpetual trophy for the owner of the Champion weanling’s broodmare, was added. Uncle Angus, owned by CJ and Kosie du Plessis won the SA Grand Champion Stallion Over Three Year class in 2014. He unfortunately died during March 2015. A trophy, depicting Uncle Angus was donated by the Du Plessis brothers to honour this beautiful stallion. Jaco de Bruyn, owner of the broodmare Valley’s Starmaker, was this year’s recipient. The fact that Jaco de Bruyn owns only five broodmares and produced the winning foal with his third attempt is what the ASF is all about - giving the smaller breeder with restricted resources the opportunity to be able to compete with the more established breeders. For the fifth consecutive year the plaque on the impressive Top stallions : 1 2 3 3 4 4 5 6 7 8 8

Sir Clarence Ronald trophy will bear the name of a different breeder and stallion. Late afternoon on Monday, 20 April 2015, saddlehorse breeders had the opportunity to buy services from almost fifty of the best bred and imported stallions in the country during the seventh consecutive stallion auction. Services of the imported stallions were in demand and again realized the highest prices. The total earnings were more than R300 000. The cumulative ASF Sire Rating (2011 – 2015) compiled after the 2015 Weanling Championship and Performance Classes follows. A nominated stallion is awarded points for the weanling, performance and also if he is the sire of a broodmare whose foal placed in the weanling or performance classes. So far a total of more than 70 different stallions were nominated over the five years of the competition. A winning foal awards a stallion 10 points, second place 9 points, etc. The sire rating for the ASF weanling and performance competitions bears no reference to the National Sire rating in South Africa and is not a yearly individual Sire Rating but a cumulative rating of the stallions nominated over the years of the competition. ASF PERFORMANCE CLASSES Johnnie Walker Red (Tamagotchi by SJ Red Ruby) and Dirk Claasens won the ASF Fine Harness S/M/G Three Year Old class and prize money of R7 000 for owner Michelle Emberson. Johnnie Walker Red was also the Reserve SA Champion Fine Harness S/M/G Three Year Old during the show. As a foal, he was Reserve Champion in the 2012 ASF. The ASF 2015 Three Gaited S/M/G Three Year Old Class was won by Something French, trained, ridden and owned by CJ du Plessis. This class had prize money to the value of R8 000. Something French (French Legionnaire x Miss Gracias) won the ASF in 2013.This year she was crowned Champion Mare Over Three Years. Thanks to Nicky Heyns from Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape, the ASF 2015 competition was one of glamour and an epitome of style. At this stage a record number of seventy seven mare nominations have been received for the ASF 2016 weanling futurity class with the champion of the 2016 class that will receive R100 000 prize money. The ASF continues to go from strength to strength to such an extent that the organizers are now looking to the future and the possibility of a show where all the horses that qualify to participate in the ASF, will be able to compete as senior horses. In 2006 our story started as follows: This is a unique, and wonderful, true story of a magnificent, dark bay, stallion who made history and won hearts within and way beyond the American Saddlebred Industry. Our hero is War Image, foaled in 1985 out of Perfect Image (Supreme Fortune - Paula M) and by Warlord (Trojan - Cameo’s Lady Jane). War Image crossed the ocean to triumph on the green shavings of Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, as World Champion Five-gaited Stallion in 2000, and as Reserve World Grand Champion Five-gaited Horse in the same year. He looked awesome on that Saturday evening and his fans will remember how, as the favourite, he “brought the house down” when he was stripped and stood up in perfect form - an African Statue - looking way above any other being in Freedom Hall. In March 2007 this war hero boarded a plane back home to spend his last days under the African Sun. He was a surprise entry at the SA Championships in Bloemfontein that year, and at the age of 20, he took top honours as the South African Grand Champion Stallion in hand. On the Thursday evening he was officially welcomed back to South Africa at a unique evening ceremony and who will forget the emotion as this presentation ended with the words: “Tonight we salute War Image - our own hero who did us proud on the world stage and is the only Saddle Horse to return home to live it up in the African Sun. It is indeed good to witness such a happening in times when we, all too often, do not stop and smell the roses”. 104 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

U

nfortunately we did not have any success breeding War Image and on a subsequent visit to Kentucky, I saw one of his sons – the handsome, very dark bay stallion, French Legionnaire. By War Image, he was out of the five times world champion five gaited mare – My Chanel (WC Caramac out of Reedann’s Maui Girl). Many South Africans have had the privilege of seeing this awesome mare in action on the green shavings and will agree that this breeding has the potential to enhance the Saddlebred in South Africa. In December 2010 French Legionnaire was imported as the stud sire for “Image County” in Clarens to continue the War Image legacy. I got so much more than I bargained for as I settled into my own little bit of heaven with War Image on pension and French Legionnaire siring some exceptional foals from year one. Although not part of the initial plan, I started showing him, and after a year or two he was making quite an impression in the show ring - with a super attitude and masses of natural action – characteristics he is definitely passing on his progeny. I have enjoyed getting involved in breeding at this late stage in my life and from the outset, French Legionnaire campaigned in the Africa Saddlehorse Futurity program (AFS), where three of his foals have scored top honours in various weanling and performance classes. Something French (out of Miss Gracias) and owned by CJ du Plessis won the 2012 weanling class as

well as 2015 three year old three gaited class. Gloria French (out of Wilmar Glory Glory) won the 2014 three year old fine harness and The Big French (out of Belle of San Francisco) placed second in the 2015 three year old fine harness. The cumulative scores make French Legionnaire top scoring stallion of the AFS in 2015 – a great achievement in a program where participating stallions get to compete on an even playing field, each with a maximum of 2 foals nominated in any one year.

In closing, I must tell of the unbelievable relationship I now enjoy with my French Legionnaire – he is truly a noble and handsome individual – who will spend the rest of his days at Image County. As a stallion he is perfectly mannered in the stable and we enjoy plenty of “us time”! When it comes to work under saddle or in harness, he enjoys stepping out offering from the depth of his heart, that natural extravagant motion which makes him so special. French Legionnaire – my American Dream, War Image legacy, and so much more than I ever could have imagined…

MORE THAN TEAM MATES

US Saddle Seat Invitational 2015, New Orleans

A

long time ago, there was a little rider who looked up to the Senior Protea Saddle Seat Equitation Team. On 14 February 2015 the dream of that little rider finally became a reality. It was the beginning of an unforgettable journey that lay ahead.

its incredibly humid and hot summer weather.

As a team who are all about the same age and share the same passion for Equitation, we visited tourist attractions for the rest of the weekend in downtown Atlanta, while adapting to the time difference. Right from the start we ticked off items on our bucket lists. Watching the Atlanta Braves win Eight talented riders’ prayers was heard and hard work was the baseball match against the New York Mets was definitely rewarded with the green blazer with the prestigious golden a highlight. We made our way to the Martin Luther King lining when we were selected to represent our country. Museum and visited the massive Georgia Aquarium where Planning and organizing took place for months. To practice we enjoyed a dolphin show in the Wet Zone. Another and to save money for the trip to USA were the topics on highlight was our visit to the Six Flags Theme Park, where everyone’s minds. The excitement increased and a team of it became clear who the adventure junkies were. I guess I closely knit friends formed. should keep quiet about who screamed the loudest on those jaw-dropping rides. It was a day very well spent. The group that consisted of eight riders(myself included), two coaches and a manager was headed to the USA on June On Tuesday we were down to business. The jetlag was 19 to compete in the Young Riders Invitational, held in New something of the past and it was time to get those game Orleans. After a sixteen-hour flight Atlanta greeted us with faces on as we headed to New Orleans. We eventually all

arrived safely at the Hampton Inn, where all the participating teams were staying for the week. A welcome dinner was held by Team USA and the riders got the chance to get to know each other, promote our beautiful country South Africa, and of course… add each other on Snapchat. The next morning the drawing of horses and the order of go took place. Each team went on a trail ride through the park and during the afternoon serious shopping was on the cards. We sat in the changing rooms, adding up figures and counting our last few bucks. There went the pocket money. On Thursday morning we went on a Swamp tour where we saw and touched alligators, baby turtles and snakes. This certainly caused some nerve wracking incidents. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoon the fitting of horses took place. Each team had 20 minutes to practice and change riders and horses within their group, until the coaches

were satisfied. It was time to focus and get ready for the competition. The competition days were tough and extremely hot. The Protea team consisted of five riders and an individual rider who participated in the competition in the Three-gaited and Five-gaited classes. After day one the team was pretty satisfied with our performance, but knew we had to strive towards a personal best the following day. Everyone gave their best and supported each other around the arena. It was tiring, but so much fun. During the competition we learned more about how to express and present ourselves in the arena and that attitude is an essential element in performing. We had the chance to enhance our equitation and horsemanship skills as we rode on different horses each day. At the end of the week team South Africa returned home with much more than just two silver medals for the team and

the individuals. We headed home, already knowing what the next game plan is‌ knowing where to improve and how to handle difficult situations in the future. We went home with memories that will last forever. The success of this Invitational can be directly attributed to the amount of effort that Lori Nelson and her team, as well as Barbe Smith, her team and Cascade Stables, have put in. Thank you for presenting the opportunity to compete in such an event. Thank you for creating a flawless environment for the Invitational to take place in, and for making sure that the teams enjoyed every single moment. Most importantly, thank you everyone in South Africa, especially Lynette Gerber, Jacques Wiggens and Adriaan Odendaal, for the experience to learn more and to develop our skills and performance. Thank you everyone at home for your unconditional support. The experience we had while being part of the competition, travelling to new places, making new friends and preparing through the guidance of excellent coaches, was truly everything we dreamt of.

he year was 1985.Victoria Gillenwater, at just 16-yearsold, was preparing to make her first trip across the Atlantic to South Africa from her hometown of Knoxville,Tennessee. Bill Wise had put together the first international team to travel and compete against a South African home team, paving the way for future Saddle Seat World Cup Teams. The competition was tough, and the South Africans had the advantage with horses they were more familiar with, in addition to the overwhelming support of their countrymen cheering them on. A young man, also 16, from the Eastern Cape of South Africa, Jacques Van Niekerk pushed his way to the rail to see the one rider that brought the house down with her across the board wins on a tough horse. That girl was Vicki. “The way our paths crossed for the first time, I met him and talked to him that day, but didn’t know him,” said Vicki. Neither could ever have imagined that more than a decade later, their paths would cross again; this time, becoming permanently entwined. “She doesn’t remember me because she was becoming legendary in our country and I never in a million years thought I would be running her farm,” added Jacques, recalling the moment from 30-years-ago. Jacques grew up in the eastern part of Cape Province, in a tiny town called Molteno, about 3 ½ hours directly south of Bloemfontein. His mother, Judy, stayed home with the family, while his father, Stollie, worked in the oil industry. He also had an older brother, Stevie that passed away from complications stemming from Polio, at the age of 15. Jacques remembers “always riding” growing up. He started with a pony, and kept his first show horse at the local show grounds. As a teenager, he began showing under the direction of Koekie de Villiers, and had a very successful gaited horse. 200 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

He continued riding and showing throughout his teens, and at 16-years-old began riding with highly regarded trainers Koekie de Villiers and then Harold Poil. After high school, Jacques served his mandatory two years in the military and then went to work for his mentor Harold Poil. Afterward, Jacques worked at Rainbows End Farm and then re-opened Whipalong Stud working customer horses on his own for more than four years throughout his midtwenties. With phenomenal previous opportunities riding and working with such highly regarded and respected trainers, he was successful with his own operation. Jacques’ proudest moment in South Africa was winning the 3-yearold Three-Gaited National Championship, in front of judge, Marilyn Macfarlane, at Bloemfontein in 1994 to a packed house, on a horse so aptly named Elegant Express. Loaded with chrome, the chestnut horse with four white legs was gifted and smart. It was quite an accomplishment for such a young trainer, showing against the most renowned trainers in South Africa. “I was just thrilled to be in the mix to begin with, and couldn’t believe that I won the class,” recalled Jacques. Jacques’ success in South Africa was evident. He was garnering accolades and making a name for himself as a noted trainer. But still, he wanted something more. “I loved the atmosphere and show community in South Africa,” said Jacques. “But it had been my dream from the time I was a small child to be a Saddlebred trainer in the United States.” He knew that America was truly the birthplace of the Saddlebred, and he wanted to see if there were more opportunities to try to be the best of best where his breed had started. While competing at a local show, the American judge, Lisa

So in 1997, Memorial Day in fact, Jacques Van Niekerk arrived on American soil, south of the Mason Dixon line, in central Tennessee. “Lisa and David were great to me and made sure I had the right suit, consignment horses to work and show. They paid me commissions when a horse sold, and tried to teach me the business,” said Jacques. Lisa made sure he looked the part with a custom made suit from Carl Meyers; they paid him for his success, and treated him right as their assistant.

The Gillenwater’s had eight horses showing at Louisville that year, and they packed everything up and went home the next morning.

Jacques came to Scenic View in November 1998, and in August 2000, the Monday evening of the World’s Championship Horse Show, Bobby Wolfenbarger died of a massive heart attack at just 50-years-old.

Bobby Wolfenbarger had been the Gillenwater’s trainer since Vicki was 11-years-old, and with his death came an overwhelming sense of loss. The sense of loss was not only for a close friend, but also of someone who knew every minute detail of each and every horse under his care. It took the Gillenwater’s time to even feel like they could continue on without such an integral part of the Scenic While Jacques was working at Beaverbrook, some changes were View operation. “We didn’t even know what shoes went on our taking place in late 1998, and Beaverbrook reorganized its program. horses,” said Vicki. Jacques’s role would become different as well. “It’s human nature when someone dies, especially someone like Jacques had met Bobby Wolfenbarger, who at the time was the Bobby, you almost don’t want to like the new guy. A year later, in 2001, Dorothy Gillenwater was diagnosed with lung cancer, and by 2005, both Dorothy and Vicki’s father, Paul, had passed away. The times were tough, but Jacques stuck by Vicki’s side at Scenic View, and together they continued to live out her family’s legacy. The horses had always brought their family together, and they continue to do so today. Dorothy Gillenwater had always said a good horse was a good horse, no matter the breeding, and she would be proud of the success of Scenic View today. She always wanted a beautiful black horse, and although it may not be a Saddlebred, a black horse by another breed has made its way onto the Gillenwater’s farm, turning heads along the way. “I wish my mother, father and Bobby Wolfenbarger could have been here, they all wanted a black horse at Scenic View,” said Vicki. It was pure circumstance that led Vicki to her first Friesian. Zander fan Camelot was selected in 2007, as a baby still by his mother’s side, by Vicki from her friend Lindsey Pinkstaff Brownlee.“[Lindsey] is just a genius in her knowledge of Friesians,” said Vicki.“She knows their breeding, and she had bought him on paper. When I saw him, I didn’t know anything about the breed or what they do, all I knew was that he was the most phenomenal animal I had ever seen, and I had to have him.” Vicki had not been looking to buy another horse, and certainly had no intentions of buying a Friesian, but there was not one instant of hesitation at the sight of Zander, and the stallion’s success has since brought international attention and accolades to trainer Jacques Van Niekerk. When Vicki bought Zander, she did so with a promise that Lindsey could present him at his foal Keuring, a judging event where the Dutch KSPS Registry reviews the candidate horses with stringent grading criteria. Vicki brought Jacques along to the inspection. The foals and their mothers were handed off to handlers, making it difficult to determine which horse was Zander, in a sea of black Friesians. “The place was packed, and this colt comes into the ring. He doesn’t back an ear, his neck comes up, he trots above level and the crowd goes insane. Jacques goes, ‘I hope to God yours looks like that’. And I thought me too.”

disposition, beauty and movement at the walk, trot and canter. The process is so demanding that there have been only 480 stallions approved in the entire history of the breed, and there are currently fewer than 100 approved stallions worldwide.

After Zander’s first test in 2010, he was brought back to Scenic View where he was given time to recuperate and then work on his Saddle Seat. Over the next couple years he took the Saddle Seat world by storm, racking up blues everywhere he went. He also worked on his Dressage skills, in hopes of preparing for his next Keuring. To make it even more difficult for Zander, the Dutch don’t That colt got a 1, which is only given to about 1% of all Friesian recognize the discipline of Saddle Seat, which Zander is so famous foals in the world. According to Jacques, his greatest accomplishment was winning three titles at the IFSHA World Championship and Grand National Horse Show in Lexington,Virginia last year, and going undefeated in the 2014 season.Vicki showed Zander in the Friesian Stallion under saddle qualifier and won, and then he won the in-hand class as well. “To have Zander ready for me to ride him and do well and then still have him be on target to win the whole thing in a phenomenal class was such an accomplishment. It was his greatest moment,” said Vicki. He felt like as a horse trainer, all of the things he wanted The inspection of the stallions for entry into the studbook is a to do came true in one show. Each time they are inspected, the horse must do well enough to continue on. At the last inspection, the horses are scored. At 6-years-old, the judges expected that Zander be at Prix St. George level, in only 70 days, an impossible feat.“They held him to the ‘gaited stake’ level, and he still only missed it by one point,” said Vicki. While he may have missed the stallion approval by just one point, Zander fan Camelot is still a star in the hearts of many, and his future is bright. He has spent the winter at Cornerstone Stud in Paris, Kentucky. They are collecting him to freeze semen and Vicki plans to breed him to a few select mares. “I have negotiated deals for some of the top Friesian mares that exist to buy eggs, and plan on breeding Scenic View mares. We are breeding for our personal reasons this year – and will show him this next year, and he will go back to Cornerstone to stand to the public next year.”

FULFILLING A DESTINY:

I

KISMET FARM

n the heat of the Kentucky summer, as the sun is setting and the last rays of light are peeking through the stable doors, Alex Wille-Irmiter walks down the aisle way listening to her horses munch on hay. As she turns off the fans for the evening, and looks around taking in her surroundings, she knows she’s already made it. And at just 31 years old, that’s quite an accomplishment. For Alex, she was fulfilling a goal she set out for herself at just five-years-old. Not many people have their life planned out at such a young age. But, when you’re in the horse industry, and on top of that, a horse crazy little girl, anything is possible. “I feel like I have been working every single day since I was fiveyears-old at fulfilling the goal I had back then. I am to the point now, where I am satisfied enough with myself that if this ends up not working out in the long run, I know that I accomplished my goal, and I have self-fulfillment. There are plenty of other things and goals that I have set for myself that I have yet to achieve, but as far as the overall dream, I’ve already made it in my opinion. Even if I never win a blue ribbon at Louisville, I’ve made it and I accomplished my goal,” said Alex proudly. 228 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

Alex Wille-Irmiter grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Nan Wille and Tom Irmiter, along with her younger brother, Jimmy. Her mom had a wonderful old quarter horse, Poco, and Alex started riding by herself at just three-years-old, on her grandparent’s dairy farm in their outdoor arena. “My mom used to make me ride bareback, because she said that it wasn’t safe to ride with a saddle, and I had a little kid’s Western saddle. Our barn was at the bottom of a big hill and she told me if I could get the saddle to the barn then I could ride in it. So I would literally drag it in the gravel down the hill to the barn so I could ride with the saddle, because I hated riding bareback,” laughed Alex. While her mother had no formal experience, she had a friend, Linda Hagan-Kvanbeck that did 4H on Morgan’s. She mentioned that Alex should start taking a few lessons with her, and showing in Western lead line. She did show in Western for all of her walk and trot years and then wanted to try English. Hunt seat was the most common transition from Western in the Morgan industry, and Alex’s grandfather soon purchased a Morgan for her to show.

When she was about eight-years-old, Alex’s parents, along with her uncle, bought an 80-acre piece of property that had previously been part of their family homestead, and had over the years been sold out of the family. When it became available again, they jumped at the opportunity to buy it, and opened a public barn. This was where she got her first introduction to saddle seat, when the trainers they hired had a background with both Morgans and Saddlebreds. After about five years, when her parents were going through a divorce, they sold the barn but Alex continued to ride with those trainers, Lyle and Colleen Wick, throughout the majority of her juvenile career at their Hardwood Creek Farm. Alex spent many weekends at their farm, and weeks at a time during the summer, learning as much as she could about the horses and soaking up as much time in the saddle as she could. “Lyle and Colleen really did a lot for me, when I was growing up.They and their children were like family to me,” she added. When Alex was in the sixth grade she attended a clinic at Hardwood Creek, where the guest instructor was Gayle Lampe. Alex was enthralled by her style of teaching, and quickly

decided she wanted to attend William Woods University for college. Once again, deciding early on that she wanted to move forward training horses. At this time, her sights were set on purely Morgans. It wasn’t until she was in college that she started becoming exposed to American Saddlebreds as well as the many other breeds that they have. Towards the end of high school, Alex also spent some time with the Bodnar’s at their Merriehill Farm in Marengo, Illinois. They were very influential, and gave Alex a lot of wonderful opportunities to catch ride Morgan horses. Throughout the years, Alex’s mom was always able to provide her with a horse to show and was quite the horsewoman herself, showing at a national level. “For someone who had never sat in a flat saddle or held two sets of reins until they were in their forties, she is a really incredible rider, much better than your average amateur,” said Alex. “She has always been so quick to foster my passion and dreams and my goals, and if she ever bought a horse for herself, it would usually end up being for me to show. I hope I can repay her at some point,” she added. THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

In 1998, when Alex was just 13-years-old, her mom invested in a four-year-old Morgan named LW Ace’s Wild.Together, the pair was Grand National Champions in Oklahoma that year in 12 & 13 hunter pleasure and hunt seat equitation. Alex’s stepdad, Dick Cecchettini, has also been influential in providing her with opportunities to show and ride over the years. One of the most pronounced opportunities came in the form of a Morgan named Cabot French Pepper, who is now, at the age of 22, a prized member of Alex’s lesson program. He bought the horse as a yearling. Cabby won three English Pleasure World Championships in Oklahoma, as well as multiple in-hand victories at the regional and national level. The stallion was also making a name for himself as a sire, breeding many top mares. Right before Alex’s final year as a junior exhibitor, her stepfather and mother decided to geld him, as Alex did not have a horse to show. The decision to geld him was fruitful, as Alex ended up winning the 14-17 English Pleasure World Championship in Oklahoma, out of a field of 24 of the country’s best. After high school, Alex did in fact attend William Woods University. There, she continued to foster her enthusiasm for the Morgan breed, while also exposing herself to the many other breeds and disciplines available at the school. It was there she discovered that, “A good horse of any breed is a good horse” and began to appreciate many different types of horses. She once again spent time at Merriehill Farm and the Bodnar’s, as well as internships with Gerry Rushton and Stacy Hennessy in California for two summers. The summer before her senior year she took a leap of faith as she wanted to become more exposed to the Saddlebred, and got an internship with the renowned Nelson Green. When she arrived at Nelson’s she had no idea how to put on a brace, high tail crupper, or even a tail set. Coming from the Morgan industry it was hard, but she was becoming more and more entranced with the breed, and she fell in love with Kentucky and the Saddlebred county fair circuit. After she graduated college in 2007, she wanted to stay in Kentucky, and she continued to work for Nelson Green for about a year and a half. While in college, Alex also had the opportunity to show some wonderful William Woods horses. One of her most memorable moments was showing The Great Gazoo to a third place finish in the Five-Gaited Show Pleasure Adult National Championship in Kansas City her senior year in college. The summer after she graduated, she leased him to show on the Kentucky circuit and won several competitive classes, as well as earning a first place vote and third-place finish in the qualifier at the World Championship Horse Show. The Great Gazoo is now enjoying his retirement at Kismet. In the fall of 2008, Alex was for the first time in her life, secondguessing the path her career was taking. Her close group of friends from William Woods were all going in different directions; some training horses and others were moving into other professions. While she loved the horses, she had lost confidence that it was what she was meant to do. After giving Nelson her notice, she took the winter to reevaluate things, 230 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

spend time with her family at Christmas, and think about her next step. She had heard that Kris and Bill Knight were looking for an assistant at their Pleasantview Farm in Simpsonville, Kentucky, and she met with them to discuss the opportunity. They immediately hit it off, Kris and Alex having many things in common; including growing up in the north and their exceedingly “Type A” personalities. In February 2009, Alex took the next influential step in her career, and started working for Pleasantview Farm. She jumped in feet first, the first project being a 2-year-old just broke to long-line that needed to be gaited, a bit of a phobia for Alex at the time. One thing that Bill told Alex resonated deeply. “Day one, the goal breaking colts was to make the best lesson horse in the country, and then build from there. Don’t rush,” he said. Of course, in no time at all she had the colt racking smoothly, and as time went on she began taking on more responsibilities, becoming an integral part of Pleasantview. From the day that Bill and Kris hired Alex, they had intentions of her eventually moving on and opening her own business. “There is no one that will work harder, care more, or do as good of a job as Alex,” said Kris.“She wanted it for herself even though she probably didn’t even realize it. It’s a huge, big, scary step to go out on your own.”They both immediately saw the potential in Alex,

The Equestrian Connection

M

any of you would recognize Misdee & James Miller of Hillcroft Farms to be atop a beautiful walk trot or gaited horse, behind a speeding roadster or lavish fine harness horse; but Hillcroft Farm has many other involvements in the competitive equestrian world aside from their Saddlebred Division. With their Driving Division and Polo Division, Misdee and James are forced to play a juggling act to be able to attend all of the competitions in their industries. Top competitions that is, as they are competing at the highest levels in each discipline across North America and in Europe with the Driving Division. Hillcroft Farm, located in Paris, Kentucky was purchased in 2001 and was named after Misdee’s grandparents’ farm in Wisconsin. Misdee and James continued to purchase land around the original farm of 425 acres and they now have a total of 1200 acres. The beautiful state-of-the-art facilities featuring beautiful white and green stables, a carriage house and an indoor arena are complemented by the beautiful landscape that features miles of riding and driving trails and lush Kentucky bluegrass. Although the farm is home to the driving, polo and Saddlebred divisions, aside from those in training at Kalarama, Hillcroft Farm also devotes roughly half of the total acreage of property to agriculture. Hillcroft Farm houses Misdee’s 14 bay Dutch Harness Horses,

By Shannon Ella James’ team of black Gelderlander’s, a team of Hackney Horses, several retired American Saddlebreds, polo ponies, Arabians and National Show Horses. After spending last horse show season overseas competing in combined driving and preparing for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France Hillcroft Farm was forced to miss most of the 2014 Saddlebred show season. Misdee credits her mother, Dorothy “Deedie” Wrigley, for allowing her the opportunity to experience horses in the way she has “she was my best friend, my mentor and she was the lady who would load up the two-horse trailer at 5 o’clock on Saturday mornings and take me to the little horse shows, sitting around all day while my little Arabian would show in every class. She was very devoted, an excellent horse-woman, a great rider, she ran a very successful breeding program, she did it all.” It is clear to see just where Misdee gets her natural ability and drive to be so versatile and follow in her mother’s footsteps, doing it all in her own unique way. Misdee’s fascination with Saddlebreds began at a young age, when she convinced her mother in the mid to late 80’s to allow her to buy a few show mares that were placed in training with Rob Wallen in San Diego, California. At this time Misdee was still just dabbling in the Saddlebred industry and following that she moved to Florida where her horses were placed in training with Tom Scott.

Misdee began her journey with Kalarama in May of 1997 due to her connection with Brian Chappell through the Arabian Show Horse world, as he was working with Kalarama at the time. After taking a trip out to Kalarama, Misdee would then fall in love with a beautiful chestnut mare by the name of Our Canary Diamond, who would turn out to be her first big time Saddlebred. CH Our Canary Diamond was purchased and remained in training with Kalarama throughout her show career until she retired to become a top broodmare for Hillcroft Farm. In just their first show season together, Misdee and CH Our Canary Diamond would go on to win the 1997 Fine Harness Amateur World Championship, among several others, but this win she exclaims is handsdown her “most memorable moment and performance”. Under the direction of Kalarama Farm, located in Springfield, Kentucky, Hillcroft Farm has a stellar line up of top notch American Saddlebreds and Standardbred Roadster Horses. Kalarama Farm, owned by Joan Hamilton with trainers Larry Hodge and assistant trainers Danny Lockhart and Kelly Self directing Misdee and James to several championships across the United States, is one of the top training facilities and show barns in North America. Misdee explains her reason for being such a devoted client of Kalarama is due to “a

246 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

combination of their professionalism, their talent and Larry in my opinion has the best ability in the business to pair people with horses. It’s a real talent.” Misdee and Larry have always seen eye to eye on the philosophy of being patient with the horses, not rushing and realizing that it’s not all about making one competition but to wait and take the horse at their own pace. Touching on this subject, Misdee explains, “The horse will tell us when it’s ready to show, or not ready to show. That’s sort of what we have always done, especially bringing our young horses along. With horses like Two Sweet to Kiss, Larry has been so patient with her, bringing her along slowly. That is definitely something that has translated with me to the other disciplines.” Assistant Trainers at Kalarama, Danny Lockhart and Kelly Self, another dynamic duo in the Saddlebred world are quick to respond to their most memorable moments with Hillcroft Farm. “Misdee is so passionate,” Danny explains “I have so many good memories to choose from, but Misdee winning the Three Gaited World’s Grand Championship with Grande Gil has to be the greatest. It is such a prestigious award and I know how much that meant to

Misdee, and of course all of us at Kalarama.” Kelly, the more recent addition to the Kalarama training team describes James as “enthusiastic.” With his previous experience in the horse world through polo Kelly explains “It was clear when we first started working with James that his polo background was going to be beneficial to his training in saddleseat. He has very good natural balance and is confident on a horse.” Her favorite memory with James though would be with him in the roadster bike, “watching James show his road horse, Ring of Fire, is always a thrilling (and sometimes nerve wrecking) experience, but I would have to say him winning the Amateur Road Horse to Bike Championship at Kansas City last year tops it off for me. He came back in the championship with vengence!” A competitive nature that surely is a credit to his experience in the game of polo. Their current line up of champions includes: Trust My Imagination (Fine Harness), HS Baby Steps (Three-Gaited), Moonbeams and Dreams (Three Gaited), Ring of Fire (Roadster), Two Sweet To Kiss (Five Gaited), CH Fox Grapes Dauntless (Five Gaited), Live Action (Roadster), Ridin High (Five Gaited) and Cavalia who was just recently bred to Callaway’s Northern Kiss.

Misdee has been involved in Coaching for several years and more recently dove head first in to the competitive world of combined driving. Originally when Misdee first got involved in the combined driving sport, trainer Todd Draheim was in charge of not only that, but also the coaching and pleasure driving horses at Hillcroft Farm, as well. Due to hectic schedules, travelling and trying to be in two places at once Draheim now remains at home in Paris, Kentucky in charge of the coaching and pleasure driving horses. 2015 will be the first summer spent at home in Kentucky instead of in Europe which Misdee says she is “really enjoying” and in the winter time James and Misdee travel to Sarasota, Florida with Michael Freund coaching her. Taren Lester and Amber Evansen are the duo in charge of her combined driving. Thus far in 2015 the coaching horses of Hillcroft Farm have competed at The Devon Horse Show, The Carriage Associate of America Show at The Kentucky Horse Park and Lexington Junior League under the direction of Draheim, with a few others to go including The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in November. Trainer Todd Draheim explains, “Misdee and James are the only couple that both drive a Coach,” and when asked about working with Misdee he states, “I like it that she is

very hands on with the horses, no matter what she does she is very involved. Misdee and James are heavily involved in the coaching world aside from soley competing; they are on committees, clubs and assist in the planning of several horse shows in the United States. Misdee has been president of World Coaching Club, which is made up of all women from around the world who own a coach and drive a four-in-hand in the correct style. To be a part of this prestigious club you must uphold tradition in the coaching world, ensure you know how to turnout properly and are knowledgeable about the sport. She has held this position for about 13 years and Misdee explains her excitement about how interest has sparked about this club over the last few years due to social media and they now have several members all over the world. Misdee is also an organizer of the Four-in-Hand National Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park and James is the Vice President of the New York Coaching Club. If you think watching Misdee speed around a ring behind Live Action is exciting, wait until you see her maneuvere four Dutch Harness horses around a marathon course in combined driving. Exciting does not even cover it. The sport of Combined Driving, which Misdee is now a top competitor in, is not for the faint of heart or the lazy. 248 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

After some serious training in Europe and hard work, Misdee was set to compete in the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France representing her home country of the United States of America. After Misdee and James visited the memorial in Normandy before moving into the show site, which she explains, “really fomented how special it is to represent your country. So few people of the population, whatever sport it is actually get to represent the United States in international competition. You take all of that national pride and it’s not personal anymore, or your personal blood, sweat and tears, it’s representing something much larger than yourself.” Competing alongside Chester Weber and Allison Stroud at WEG 2015 landed Misdee a fourth place finish overall with her team after competing in all three disciplines of dressage, cones and marathon. When asked which is favorite Misdee explains, “I love the constant pursuit of perfection in dressage because no matter how much you practice there is always something more than you can attain. The marathon is just so challenging, still to this day when I walk the obstacles I think, yeah I am going to take four horses and a carriage with three people on it and go through there and make that turn, really? It still amazes me that I even do it. The cones I used to absolutely hate, which was due to elimination in a competition. I had to see several sports therapists, which

I guess they were really good because now I absolutely love cones. In Normandy, Allison Stroud told me I had to come through on the cones, so I felt the pressure but then something really clicked. And now cones might just be my favorite.” David Freedman of Freedman Harness, who is responsible for outfitting all of Misdee and James’ Coaching, Combined Driving, Saddlebreds and Roadster horses quickly responds to the thought of Misdee’s adaptability in the horse world, “She is the most versatile horsewoman of my time, that’s for sure. This woman does everything and is an elite athlete in her field. It doesn’t matter what you give her to do, she does it and does a great job. She loves it, she’s great at it and she is an asset to the horse business.” The Polo side of Hillcroft Farm is the most recent addition to their already overflowing equestrian involvement. James has been competing and playing polo for several years, as a one goal player the most offence oriented position on the field. James and Misdee just recently built a new barn on the farm for the polo ponies, as well as a regulation polo field, stick and ball areas and facilities for visting polo players. James is president of the Lexington Polo Club, winning most recently the 2015 Mt. Brilliant 14 goal tournament in Lexington with his Hillcroft Polo Team. He is focused on creating a casual and social environment for the Kentucky polo community,

allowing both experienced and new players to the game. When asked about the change in Misdee since she and James have come together David Freedman responds that “He is a local Lexingtonian and been around horses his whole life. He has helped her stay competitive due to his background in polo.” And with a laugh “You have to be competitive to play polo, because that’s the last thing I want is someone chasing me on horseback with a stick!” Under the direction of James, Hillcroft Farm also focuses immensely on devoting about half of their acreage to agriculture. From alfalfa to alfalfa mix hay, which is used by Hillcroft Farm as well as sold to outside clients, they also grow soybeans, corn and wheat. Misdee says with a laugh, “James has always wanted to be a farmer,” which he is now able to do and clearly has become a very successful one. As you can see Hillcroft Farm is much more than just a typical horse farm you see when you drive down the country roads in Kentucky. Behind those gates and across that bridge in Paris, Kentucky lays an oasis of equestrian history and modern beauty. Misdee and James have joined their knowledge and passion of horses together, resulting in one of the most talented, dominating and successful power couples the equestrian world is to see in this lifetime. Behind the Lens: For decades, Howard Schatzberg has been a mainstay of the show ring at some of the biggest horse shows across the United States. His photos have been on countless magazine covers, posters, advertisements, and websites. Anyone that has shown an Arabian, Morgan, Saddlebred, or even a hunter/jumper is likely to recognize that copyright signature, envisioning the man himself.Yet, how many really know the man behind the lens? Howard Schatzberg is the son of a well known horse show photographer, Jack Schatzberg. Howie followed in his father’s footsteps in many ways, learning the technical process, tricks of the trade, and a strong work ethic. Jack taught him to diversify and passed on some of his inclination for the abstract. Like most children do, Howie blended some traits of his dad’s with those of his charming mother, Jackie. She gave him his affable personality and engaging mannerisms, which have undoubtedly helped romote Howie’s career beyond merely a natural eye for a photo. Always pleasant and composed, Howie takes thousands of photos a day without losing his cool.

A self- proclaimed “glass half-full” person, he takes a fresh, optimistic approach to his work; each subject presenting its own set of challenges and circumstances yet it is not really about timing or technicalities for Howie- it’s all about feel. It’s about the intangibles that make the photograph. At farm shoots, Howie takes time to assess the location and all the factors affecting the outcome, including a multitude of details such as manes, tails, background, the horse’s onformation. Interestingly, the years of experience taught him that certain breeds like Arabians might take a longer warm-up period and the best shot will come once the horse is loose and relaxed, while the Saddlebred is a high performance machine, bursting out energy and frequently the best picture at the onset.

Callaways Forecaster and Nancy Leigh Fisher. “Nancy Leigh could put this horse anywhere as you can see going down the center of the ring which is not done very often in Freedom Hall.”

Despite all the technical considerations, it’s still important for the horse and, ultimately, the photograph to feel spontaneous. People and horses alike do better when they feel comfortable. In many ways, shooting horse shows present the same challenges, but times thirty; or fortyseven; or however many entries a class contains. A show ring photographer has just seconds to decide angles, timing, “which leg” for each horse. A lesson from his dad, Howie does not worry about the winners. Of course it’s important to get that memorable victory pass shot, but it’s equally important to capture the moment for all the exhibitors. He feels strongly that every horse and rider deserves a great shot. According to Howie, the great photographers just know when they have nailed it, they know they got the best of that horse at that moment. Furthermore, he turns off the review during classes, because he doesn’t want to miss another good picture. Howie was established in his trade when film was king. It was truly a rare art requiring dedication and talent. The advent of digital photography turned the profession on its head. The entire game changed. As point and shoot cameras removed the craftsmanship, photographers have become commonplace. It became less of an art and more of a numbers game.

Gib Marcucci and Nabucco. “This was Gib’s last performance in Freedom Hall. The crowd as you can see was electric and it was an extremely emotional moment for me.”

Regardless, Howie has tried to give the customer what they want: these days instant gratification reigns. For Howie, it’s not about the art. It’s not the victory passes. It’s not even about the horses- it’s all about the people. He’s a people person and it shows. Howie said he was once described in an introduction as “I don’t know if he’s the best photographer, but he’s definitely the most well liked photographer.” Howie learned to love what he does from his father and it manifests in every photograph. Fortunately, Howie is gifted with the ability and personality to give customers exactly what they want. It’s time consuming, hard work, and a little bit gypsy some times, but he’s blessed with the necessary support system. Longtime employee and friend, Jane King works tirelessly to fulfill orders and make it so he can be on the road week after week. His unconditionally supportive wife, Megan “tells him what he doesn’t want to hear” so he can be his best for his family and his career.Their daughter, Jacqueline, was named after Howie’s mother. Along with Howie’s daughter Hailey and son Joey, his family means everything to him. He’s an avid sports enthusiast but it is clear that the true passion in Howard Schatzberg’s life is family. “I can say I love this, but I don’t live it... It doesn’t matter to me how many victory passes, what matters is to make people happy.”

GETTING TO KNOW:

E

mma is the 10-year-old daughter of trainers Meghan and Jaisen von Ballmoos.

She will be a fifth grader this fall at Maple Street School in Manchester Center,Vermont, where she lives during the school year with her younger sister, Madeline, their Frenchie Coco, a big fluffy cat Lululemon, and their practice horse, Cruiser. In the summer she stays in Kentucky, where her father, Jaisen runs Fairview Stables. Growing up the daughter or prominent Morgan and Saddlebred trainers, Emma has been surrounded by horses since before she was even born. She started riding when she was two. “My dad used to let me drive a Morgan stallion that he trained called Boss,” said Emma. “My grandmother Nancy showed Saddlebreds since she was young too. I grew up going to the barn most days and pretty much know the horses inside and out.” Her first show was in lead line when she was just three-yearsold, and she quickly moved up to showing off the lead in both saddle seat and the hunt seat disciplines on her Saddlebreds and Morgans. Emma practices nearly every day, usually with intense pattern lessons and instructions from her parents. Although she and her sister, Maddie also enjoy just riding bareback and having fun. A typical day at the barn is usually a ride on Cruiser first, followed by some show horses. “I like riding game horses that make me improve myself all the time. I have been fortunate to occasionally take lessons from some exceptional teachers like Sarah Byers, Jan Lukens, and Lillian Shively that all gave me important tips and advice.“ The list of horses that Emma has had the opportunity to show is long, and she has been grateful for the opportunities. “I have

By Deveau Zubrod Kreitzer

been amazingly fortunate to show a lot of really nice horses. Cuttin’ Up (Saddlebred) a.k.a Olive because she made you work but always tried really hard to put on a show; The Wizard GCH (Morgan) because he was solid as a rock, UVM Odyssey (Morgan),The Boogie Woogie Man (Saddlebred) because he is extremely game but steady, CH Candle Dan because he was my first Saddlebred to show, MEM Ultimate Star (Morgan) because he was a lot of fun and I’d only had one practice before I showed him; and Indian Creek Cipriani (Morgan) in the driving classes because she’s smart and takes care of me even though I was so small.” Emma has already had quite the illustrious career for such a young girl. Still showing in the walk-and-trot division, she has garnered many top honors in both the Morgan and Saddlebred worlds. Two of her most memorable victories were winning the Morgan Walk-and-Trot Equitation World Championship Unanimously with The Wizard GCH in 2013 and winning the 8-and-under Walk-and-Trot Equitation Championship at Lexington Junior League unanimously in 2014 with Cuttin’ Up. Emma currently shows Gypsy’s Cosmopolitan in the 10-andunder Walk-and-Trot Equitation division, as well as CBMF Guilty Pleasures in Walk-and-Trot Morgan Hunter Pleasure and Equitation, and Indian Creek Cipriani in the Junior Exhibitor Park harness division. Emma hopes to show a nice Five-Gaited horse someday and she has a goal of making the World Cup Team as well. With her hard work and perseverance, there is no doubt that this young lady will accomplish anything she sets her mind to.“Riding has taught me that hard work and determination can make a person unstoppable. It has shown me that nothing is beyond my reach if I’m willing to work hard enough,” said Emma, wise beyond her years.

SISTERS SQUARED By Deveau Zubrod Kreitzer

Bubbly, energetic and good-natured. Those are just a few of the words that could describe Caroline and Eleanor Rainbolt-Forbes; the 17-year-old daughters of Leslie and Scott of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Their family includes their two older sisters, Katherine and Sarah, as well as their three dogs; Woody, Scrappy, and Buttercup, and cat, Buddy, in addition to their multitude of horses. The two will soon be starting their Junior Year of high school at Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City. They have been riding since they were just 5-years-old, when they attended a summer camp at Randy Cates’ Cross Creek Stables. “We have been obsessed with riding from that point on,” said Eleanor. The sisters quickly moved up to showing and they now ride under the direction of Mark Turner at DesMar Stables in Harrodsburg, Kentucky for their Saddlebreds and Roadster, and Kelly Kraegel’s Cottonwood Creek Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma for their Morgans. They are also instructed by Mandy Martin and Lillian Shively. Both Caroline and Eleanor have been quite successful

304 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Blue Ribbon Edition

throughout the years with both breeds, and in many different divisions, although many of those in the Saddlebred world may not have realized their deep involvement with the Morgan breed. Although the Saddlebreds and Morgans are quite similar, the two definitely notice some differences when switching between the breeds as well. “The height differences and the different body types [are the main things],” said Caroline.“It always shocks me going back and forth because their attitudes are so different, but both are amazing.” “And how long my stirrups are,” added Eleanor. “I love all the different things you can do with Morgans, they really can do it all! It’s been really fun to show in different divisions and seats. I love all Saddlebreds, but showing in Five-Gaited is a blast each time.” And, while each of their trainers is quite different as well, they both push the sisters to be the best they can be both in and out of the saddle. “Both are amazing trainers,” said Caroline. “Kelly is always so positive even when I mess up and she always expects good sportsmanship. Mark is always encouraging me to do the best I can and to always have a good time while riding.” Eleanor added in agreement, “Kelly is always positive and encouraging; she expects you to do your best and gives you her best. Mark

wants to help you every step of the way, and always pushes you.” Both sisters say their biggest challenge they have had to overcome in their riding is their nerves, and trying to not get freaked out about a performance. Their goals are to keep improving and having fun in their riding. Both Caroline and Eleanor have had countless blue ribbon rides and wonderful memories. At the top of Eleanor’s list is when she won at Louisville for the first time on CH Sprinkles in 2009 when she was just 11-years-old.The champion horse and Eleanor made over 35 victory passes over the years, including 8 World Championship titles, before he sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 19. The girls ride at least three times a week during the school year, and more during the summer. Each practice session varies, but includes lunge lessons, pattern lessons, and practice on their show horses. “Riding has really taught me discipline and to not give up when things are hard,” said Caroline. “It’s taught me so many life lessons,” added Eleanor. “It’s taught me how to be a good winner and a good loser, to keep trying, and to always have a good work ethic.” While these vivacious teens have many things in common, and they both consider the other their best friend, they most definitely have their differences as well. Eleanor is the selfproclaimed ‘better driver’, citing three cars that Caroline hit, but quickly admits that Caroline keeps her room much cleaner than the landfill that is Eleanor’s. Neither will admit to which is the better student, “this could definitely cause a fight,” laughed Eleanor, and they both believe they are the funniest of the two.

What is one place you would love to go? Australia What are your hobbies? Horseback riding, yoga, music What do you do in your free time for fun? I like to be with my friends and watch Netflix. Do you have any nicknames? Coco What is your favorite food? Sushi Favorite music, singer, or band? I love Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran Favorite movie? Forrest Gump What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? Friends and family What’s one thing you wish didn’t exist? Homework What’s something no one knows about you? I have really bad eyesight.

The girls love to travel in their free time, and both agree that their favorite place is Italy. “I really liked Italy because of all the famous art and how beautiful it all was. Also the food was amazing,” said Caroline. Eleanor added that Rome was her favorite city, “It was so cool because you get to see in person things that you’ve heard about and studied for years. Also, it was amazing to see things like the Pantheon and the Coliseum that have been around for so long. Not mention, it was a blast.” Caroline and Eleanor tend to have a blast no matter what they are doing, and going to horse shows is no exception. They are looking forward to the rest of the year showing on both the Saddlebred and Morgan circuit, and hope to keep having fun and working hard to reach their goals.

What is one place you would love to go? I would love to go Vienna in Austria. What are your hobbies? Not sure if it’s a hobby, but I love to hang out with friends. I also love to listen to music, run (when I’m feeling ambitious), and dark room photography. What do you do in your free time for fun? I hang out with my friends and just mess around! Do you have any nicknames? Elle, and sadly Peanut is a nickname too. What is your favorite food? Hardest question ever, but spaghetti might be my favorite. Favorite music, singer, or band? Ed Sheeran and George Ezra, their looks and accents don’t hurt. Favorite movie? Step Brothers What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? Probably my friends, life wouldn’t be nearly as fun! What’s one thing you wish didn’t exist? I really wish standardized tests didn’t exist. What’s something no one knows about you? I am terrified of the ocean.
