t’s that time of the year again and no I am not talking about the festive season creeping up on us. It’s time to get ready for the Cape Premier Yearling Sale! Across the country, selected yearlings are being prepared, catalogues are being studied and flight plans are being made. For not only will the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale host an extraordinary array of superbly bred yearlings, but these yearlings will all qualify for the CTS Million Dollar to be run at Turffontein Racecourse in 2017. When the richest race in Africa was announced last year, it took the thoroughbred industry by storm, but time passes and one tends to forget just what is at stake. So let me just remind you again. A cool eleven million Rand at the current exchange rate!

And all you have to do to have the possibility of an entry, is to buy a horse at either the Cape Premier Yearling Sale, the CTS March Yearling Sale or the newest addition, the CTS Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale. Owning a racehorse is the greatest thrill you can ever imagine. Watching your pride and joy thundering down the turf in front of the rest, well nothing quite beats that. Add a purse of R11 million, spread between the first five horses and I can think of no better incentive to be at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale, buyer’s card in hand. It has been a superb year for 2013 Cape Premier Yearling

Sale graduates with Carry On Alice starting the celebrations early in the year, as she taught the boys a lesson or two in the Gr. 1 S A Nursery over 1160m at Turffontein. With the likes of talented Banaadeer (AUS) behind her, Carry On Alice scorched to an impressive 2.25 length victory. By Captain Al out of the Western Winter mare, Carry On Katie, this speedy filly was consigned by Klawervlei Stud, with the hammer falling to Mr H J Warner at R475,000. Just over two months later it was the turn of Afrikaburn, the beautiful Trippi colt out of the Australian mare Aquatint, to notch up another Grade 1 victory for Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduates, as he stormed to victory in the Durban Golden Horseshoe over 1400m at Greyville on Vodacom Durban July Day. Consigned by Drakenstein Stud, Afrikaburn was snapped up for R900 000 at the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale by international owner Fred Crabbia and placed in the capable hands of trainer Dean Kannemeyer. With a merit rating of 110, this colt has the class and quality that buyers have come to expect from the Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Next it was the turn of the ladies again. The talented Western Winter filly, Cold As Ice may have started her career off with a second placing behind Lanzerac Diana Stakes winner Double Whammy, but it was the last time her opposition would ever see anything other than her swishing tail, as they fought out the minor placings. The very next time that Cold As Ice set foot on a racetrack, there was no doubt as to her extraordinary ability, as she casually recorded a runaway victory by 5.75 length. Trained by Joey Ramsden, Cold As Ice’s crowning moment came in the Group 2 Choice Carriers Championship over 1400m at Kenilworth racecourse, where she emphatically turned the tables on old foe Double Whammy, soundly trouncing her by 1.25 lengths. It was a superb performance and her acceleration when jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe pushed the button was a joy to behold. “That was like driving a Porsche”, exclaimed a delighted Fayd’Herbe. By Western Winter, out of the talented National Assembly mare Viva, Cold As Ice was consigned by Avontuur Stud at the

2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, where Ridgemont Stud had to go to R875,000 before securing the beautiful dark bay, who races in the colours of Kathy Finch and Belinda Kieswetter. This star filly now heads for the Gr.1 Avontuur Cape Fillies Guineas, where she is likely to clash swords with Double Whammy and Mike de Kockâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Champion Two Year Old filly Majmu. Last but certainly not least is another Joey Ramsden inmate. This colt not only set the tracks alight, but also delivered Champion Jockey Piere Strydom his South African recordbreaking 5000th victory. Losing his first start by a nostril, the aptly named Act Of War has certainly declared war on anybody foolish enough to oppose him. Leaving no doubt about his intentions, Act of War strolled to a four-length victory in his next start without raising a sweat, before casually adding the Gr.3 Langerman, the Listed Winter Juvenile Stakes and the Gr.3 Cape Classic to his trophy cabinet. Starting a very short priced favourite in the Gr.2 Selangor Cup over 1600m at Kenilworth, the colt with the floppy ears, took the step up in class with consummate ease, as he romped home by 2.25 lengths, confirming that he is currently

the best three-year-old colt in the country. There could not have been a more fitting occasion or a better horse for Piere Strydom to celebrate his 5000th victory on. Bred by the Arc-En-Ciel Stud, Act of War, by Dynasty out of the Cordoba mare Si Senorita, he was a R550,000 purchase for Mayfair Speculators. The star three-year-old colt and two of the best three-year-old fillies in the country; what an incredible achievement for the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. he 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI) was undoubtedly one of the most controversial in recent years. The winner Bayern’s bad break impeded the chances of half the field, including the favored Shared Belief, starting directly to his inside.

Breaking from the seventh post in the fourteen horse field, Bayern jumped inward abruptly, jumping onto Shared Belief, who in turn knocked heads with another highly-respected contender, Moreno. Mike Smith, rider of Shared Belief, could not correct the incident and the horse did not recover from the sudden intrusion. Though eventual runner-up Toast of New York would later be blamed for interference, he only appeared to be among the other opponents coming towards the inside to jockey for position and clearly never made contact with his rivals.

After the opening sixteenth of a mile, Bayern was able to set the pace on the rail under light restraint from jockey Martin Garcia. He set fractions of 23.12, 46.44, 1:10.22, and 1:34.16 for the quarter, half, three-quarter mile, and mile respectively. Five sixteenths from the wire, Garcia began encouraging the three year old colt, who would be challenged late in the stretch by the globetrotting Toast of New York and near Triple Crown winner, California Chrome. Though his advantage was narrowing nearing the wire, Bayern held off the second-placed Toast of New York by a slender nose with a final time of 1:59.88 for the 1 ¼ mile race. Bayern gave trainer Bob Baffert his first Breeders’ Cup Classic win. Following the race, the stewards looked into the incident at the starting gate. Bob Baffert, trainer of Bayern, attempted to make a case for his colt on NBC’s coverage:“Well, he broke in but the first jump is usually – you can’t control that.” Mike Smith commented later, “For a mile and a quarter race, I think we could do a better job. I am very disappointed with the whole thing. When you’ve got that kind of money going up and people who have spent time and money on travel you would think everyone would get a fair shot.” He continued,“Last year they took [Gary] Stevens [riding She’s A Tiger in the Juvenile Fillies] down when he did way less than that, it was a slight brush.You take that one down and leave this one up? I don’t understand it.”

And what you’re seeing is a culmination of semi‑maturity. He’s going to get better.” The Filly and Mare Turf was overwhelmed by Chad Brown trainees, taking both the win and place. The well-liked Dayatthespa crossed the wire victorious, one and one-quarter lengths ahead of the resilient Stephanie’s Kitten. European shipper, Just the Judge, was third for Qatar Racing Limited and the Sangster family. Fourth across the wire was the 2013 victress, Dank. In this 1 ¼ mile contest, Dayatthespa made a solid pace and drew off slightly in the stretch. Stephanie’s Kitten had come up from eighth after an eventful trip, but could not reach her stablemate. Main Sequence’s win in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (GI) was among the stronger performances of the day. In the $2,760,000 race, jockey John Velazquez placed him near the back of the field, three paths wide throughout the opening stages and brought him even further to the outside entering the stretch. The gelding rallied for the lead and held the advantage passing the final post with a final time of 2:24.91 for the one and one-half mile event. Owned and bred by Flaxman Holdings Limited, Main Sequence won by one-half

length over Juddmonte Farms’ Flintshire, who raced without the raceday medication Lasix. English-born, North American-based trainer Graham Motion remarked after the win, “Quite honestly, I couldn’t believe how well everything worked out. He broke a little better today than he has done. Johnny had him in great position coming down the hill, which I thought was important, and I didn’t want him to lose too much ground. Everything just set up beautifully. He didn’t have to move too soon. He didn’t have to lose too much ground on either turn. When he started making that last move around the turn, I felt pretty confident, to be honest, that he was going to get there.” The five year old mare, Judy the Beauty, would establish herself as the leading sprinting mare of 2014 by winning the Draftkings Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (GI) at seven furlongs. Owned and trained by Wesley Ward, she had finished second to Groupie Doll in last year’s Filly and Mare Sprint renewal. In this year’s edition, rider Mike Smith placed Judy the Beauty four to five paths wide in midfield, and took over the lead in midstretch. Despite drifting out, she bested Godolphin’s Better Lucky by a head at the wire, and Thank You Marylou for Ramsey Farm was three and one-half lengths back in third. The attractive chestnut Judy the Beauty completed the race in 1:21.92. In the males’ equivalent, the Sprint, the Illinois-based Work All Week INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

would dominate. A homebred for Midwest Thoroughbreds, this son of City Zip tracked the blistering pace in second through fractions of 21.19 and 43.34 for the opening quarter and half miles respectively. With a good ride from Florent Geroux, he moved up entering the home straight and took over quickly. Work All Week traveled outside, but was able to hold off Secret Circle by ½ length at the wire. The bay’s final time was 1:08.28 for the six furlong distance. Geroux remarked,“I was very confident the whole time. By the quarter pole, my horse just caught a nice breather and I knew he was going to be very tough to catch.” Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (GI), held at 6 ½ furlongs on the downhill turf course. Though the popular No Nay Never went off as the favorite in the betting, the well-respected Bobby’s Kitten would win for owner/breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey of Ramsey Farm. Sired by their sensational turf stallion, Kitten’s Joy, Bobby’s Kitten attained a second 2014 Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Chad Brown. Jockey Joel Rosario restrained him to near last just off the rail throughout the blisteringly fast early portions of the race on the downhill side. Leaving the hill, Bobby’s Kitten moved to the outside and came five paths wide into the stretch. Under encouragement from Rosario, he got up to win in the closing yards with a tight ½ length margin. He defeated thirteen others with a final time of 1:12.73. The Breeders’ Cup Mile, the race preceding the Classic, was the final opportunity for international contenders to get a win in the World Championship event. Not only did the Japanese-bred, French-based Karakontie emerge as the decisive winner, but the fellow French-trained Anodin and the English-based Trade Storm were second and third respectively.

Going off at an underrated 30-1, Karakontie broke from the fourteenth post, angled towards the rail, and settled into near last through the opening half mile in 45.16. He came away from the rail and moved between horses around the second turn, and found daylight midstretch. With a bold turn of foot, he took over command half a furlong from the final post, and was the obvious winner despite drifting outwards and finishing with a one length margin. The Bernsein son’s final time for the coveted race was a flashy 1:32.88 on a turf course that had been exposed to rain the previous night.

After the win, Detorri said,“I rode the Wesley [Ward]’s other horse, Luck of the Kitten, and I know he’s got a lot of speed, so I didn’t want to get in a speed duel. He [Hootenanny] blew the first turn a bit, but once I got him asleep, I knew then that I had the race at my mercy. In the stretch, he just picked up and he never looked like getting beat.”

In the Juvenile Turf, Hootenanny stalked the pacesetters between horses near the rail. Detorri guided the bay colt three paths wide into the stretch, and under urging passing the three-sixteenths pole, he reached the lead and achieved a game victory crossing the wire. The Quality Road son prevailed by ¾ lengths over the Ramsey Farm colorbearer, Luck of the Kitten, with a final time of 1:34.79.

where Goldencents aimed for his second consecutive victory as the favorite. Jockey Rafael Bejarano promptly gunned pacesetting Goldencents to the lead shortly after the start of the $920,000 event. With Vicar’s in Trouble at his side, Goldencents set a hot tempo with fractions of 22.06, 44.80, and 1:09.27 for the opening quarter, half, and three-quarter miles respectively. Vicar’s in Trouble had difficulty keeping up with such a rapid pace, tired to the back of the field, and would have to be vanned off the track due to soreness. Goldencents edged forward at the half mile pole and quickly increased his lead. With a furlong to the wire, Tapiture would challenge, and Goldencents drifted wide. Despite veering to the outside, Goldencents was the obvious winner as he completed the race in 1:35.16, 1 ¼ lengths ahead Tapiture. The Winchell Stable owned Tapiture was five lengths ahead of the field.

Racing in fourth, she stalked the pace near the rail, and slipped through the inside into the stretch. The promising filly gained the lead early in the home straight, and began drawing away. She said,“I am announcing my retirement starting on Sunday, and my husband, Joe, and I are going to be starting a family. His career is brand new and thriving, so it’s kind of good timing. He’s going to step into the limelight and I’m going to step out.”

anzerac Hotel and Spa is renowned for offering five star accommodation in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Situated on a working wine farm, its white Cape Dutch buildings date back to 1692 and it has operated as “home away from home” for discerning and esteemed guests for almost as long. 2013 saw Lanzerac dip its toes in the heady world of thoroughbred racing as they boldly put up their hand to sponsor the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes presented by CTS at Kenilworth Racecourse. While it may sound like a strange partnership, the world of opulent accommodation blended

seamlessly with the world of thoroughbred racing with class, heritage and glamour the shared denominators. A year later finds Lanzerac back as sponsors of the Ready To Run Stakes and back at Kenilworth with some exciting plans for the day. “Last year we hosted our guests in the Peninsula Room in the grandstand, but I felt the distance between us and what was happening on the actual racecourse was too vast. A wall of glass separated us from the sounds, the smells and the experience of horses thundering down the turf. What we needed was a venue, that was as close to the action as we could get”, explains Lanzerac MD Winston Cowie. After much deliberation, the team decided that the erection of a

luxury marquee under the trees, facing the running rail and next to the winner’s circle was the perfect solution.

fitting for the occasion, with dish after mouth-watering dish emerging from the kitchen.

“The horses will pass us on their way to the start and we will be close to the winning post, the winner’s circle and even the parade ring. We also wanted to showcase the culinary talent of our own chef and in our own marquee, we are able do that. Catering to the Lanzerac’s exacting standards, for 250 people, will certainly challenge our chef, but I am sure he is more than capable of rising to the ocassion. We are calling it a fete, in this case the verb, meaning ‘to lavishly entertain esteemed guests’. Our aim is to decorate the marquee in such a way that it is a representation of the Lanzerac”, added Cowie.

The day, however, was all about racing and Lanzerac could not in their wildest dreams have imagined that their raceday would deliver reigning Horse Of The Year Legislate starting his seasonal campaign in the Green Point Stakes, star three-yearold Act Of War challenging all comers in the Selangor Cup and 16 talented Lanzerac Ready To Run Sale graduates lining up in the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes. The R400,000, WFA, Gr.2 Lanzerac Le General Green Point Stakes over 1600m was the race everybody had been waiting for. Legislate, a talented son of Dynasty, was making his first appearance since he won South Africa’s premier race, the Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July on an objection and pulled up lame.

And that is precisely what they did. With opulent shimmering glass chandeliers, beautifully appointed tables and a saxophone providing subtle background music, while a myriad of waiters clad in striking Lanzerac aprons catered to the guests’ every whim. The genteel opulence spilled over on the wooden deck running right up to the rail, enabling guest to feel and hear the drumming of hooves as the field flashed past. Chef Stephen Frasier produced a five-course banquet that was not only an extraordinary taste experience, but also perfectly

Many doubted that the colt would be fit enough, especially with the field including the likes of Futura, Captain America, Jet Aglow and Readytogorightnow (AUS). Legislate however, is not the reigning Equus Champion for nothing and with a display of sheer audacity and dominance, he breezed past the field in the home straight to win easily by 3.5 lengths. So easy was the victory that even jockey Richard Fourie took a glance behind him to see where everybody was. It INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

was an extraordinary victory and we look forward to his reappearance in the Gr.1 Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Plate and the pinnacle of Cape Town racing, the Gr.1 J & B Met. To add to the excitement of the day, multiple champion jockey Piere Strydom was on the cusp of achieving the unheard of feat of riding 5000 winners. The countdown towards the magical 5000 had started the week before and many thought that he would have reached the milestone before the Lanzerac raceday, but the racing gods decreed otherwise and Strydom was one win short. In the Green Point Stakes he briefly challenged for the lead on Readytogorightnow, but it was not to be and he finished 6th. Next up was the R400,000, Gr.2 Selangor Cup over 1600m for Three-year-olds, where Strydom had the ride on the favourite Act Of War. In the end, fittingly, it was race over a long way out. When Strydom pushed the button, Act Of War accelerated and within strides, the Dynasty colt had put daylight between himself and the chasing pack. Thus affording Strydom all the time in the world to salute the crowds and savour the moment. A superstar horse and a 34

superstar jockey coming together for the most memorable of occasions. The main feature of the day, the R2 million, Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes belongs to a star in the making. Zambezi River, owned by Chris van Niekerk and Markus Jooste and trained by Sean Tarry made the long journey down from Johannesburg, specially for the race and it was certainly not in vain. At the 300m mark there was a cavalry charge as a wall of horses threatened to greet the judge. Well that was until cool as a cucumber Sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Manga Khumalo let the reins out a notch on Zambezi River. Given his freedom, the strong-willed colt wasted no time in storming to the front and within a matter of strides, the race was over. For the record, the winning margin was three quarters of a length, with Brutal Force in second and Sunset Tripp in third, 2.75 lengths back. The celebrations were big and the smiles even bigger as the Lanzerac marquee rocked late into the night. A great idea, a great event, the perfect location, superb food, incredible hospitality and a day that will be remembered for many years to come.

EQUINE SCULPTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE At the young age of 25, Edward Waites is taking the equine world by storm with his extraordinary sculptures. An art scholarship saw him attend Kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ely College in Cambridgeshire, where he honed his skills in drawing and ceramics. Text and Photos by Liesl King

ince leaving school, Edward has dedicated himself to sculpture with a single mindedness and passion that belies his young age. Made by the ancient lost-wax method, his distinctive sculptures, of both horses and wild animals, have already earned him international recognition and acclaim. Notable commissions include those for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, the ruling family of Dubai, Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing, Lord and Lady Bamford, the Bhartia family, Ivan Massow and Ben de Lisi. I first met up with Edward at Royal Ascot, where his larger than life, sculpture of Makfi was the centre of attraction at the Royal Enclosure entrance. Makfi was still a work in progress, but there was a vitality and energy about the piece, that forced racegoers to stop and stare. A majestic stallion, striding along imperiously, frozen in time. In his unique way, Edward had captured the essence of the stallion, from his kind eye to the rippling muscles as he strode across his platform. Intrigued, I went to visit Edward at home to find out more about this enigmatic artist and the making of Makfi and discovered that apart from art classes at school, Edward is completely self-taught.

“I studied at King’s Ely on an art scholarship, concentrating mostly on drawing and ceramics. Once school was done, I started casting my animal sculptures in bronze and selling them. I live close to Newmarket and being surrounded by horses everywhere, I soon delved into the equine world with my sculpting. While my background is not in racing, being so close to Newmarket has definitely helped. It is a town that revolves around horses so it had a big influence on me I guess. These days probably about half my work is comprised of equine pieces. Anything from hand size sculptures to Makfi, which at 1.05 times life size is my biggest sculpture to date.”

Standing up close and personal with the giant off-white stallion, I am in awe at the sheer talent on display. How on earth does one go about making such a large sculpture? Edward takes up the story. “The first step was finding a barn where I could work on Makfi. Due to his immense size, there was no way that I could work on him in my studio at home. Luckily, a friend had an empty barn close by and was happy to help. Making such a large sculpture is quite a lengthy process, and in man-hours it has taken me more than three months to get this far. You start by making a maquette out of clay, which is about a 6th of life size.That then gives you your base to scale up from, along with your measurements of the horse and photographs and videos of him walking. “I visited Makfi on a number of occasions, travelling back and forth from Newmarket toTweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire to see him in the flesh. Poor Makfi, each time I visited, I had him out walking up and down so that I could study his movement in great detail. It is like a trained thought. The more I went back and saw him, the more details would come to me.You have to collate all those details and images to get his body and his movement just right.

“Next, I scale up with measurements to build the steel structure that is going to be the framework of the piece.There is a middle section in his belly that goes down to his legs and up to his head, to support all the clay. Then I add a skimmed layer of clay on top that allows me to sculpt the horse. The clay stays fairly stable, as it is an oil based clay.That allows me to continue sculpting as well as enabling me to smooth out any cracks that form due to the immense weight of the sculpture.The oil in the clay enables me to work it even now, while wet clay will dry and break.The finished clay and steel structure weighs between 700 and 800kgs. Hence, a steel platform on wheels had to be built to support the piece and it allows me to move him around. A solid piece of wood on top for him to walk on, was the finishing touch. “The next stage is where I put a rubber silicone mould over the clay structure. It’s a split mould, where you mould parts of the legs, parts of the torso and head separately. That mould then comes apart and hot wax is painted inside each of the moulded pieces. So you get a wax replica of what you see here, just in different

pieces. Each of those component parts are then cast in bronze through the lost wax process before being welded together. He will be cast in six or seven sections.That is why it is such a big feat, as he has to be structurally supported and then welded together extremely carefully, so that you can’t see the seams. When the welding is finished, the sculpture is therefore hollow, with the bronze being about half an inch to a quarter of an inch thick. The last stage is to mount the sculpture. In bronze Makfi will weigh about 600 to 700kgs, so he needs a stone or brick platform to stand on.”

When asking about how Makfi came take centre stage at Royal Ascot this year, I discover that the statue is actually well travelled, having even graced the Chelsea Flower Show! Edward explains. “He first went to the Guineas at the Rowley Mile Course here in Newmarket.Then I took him to the Chelsea Flower Show, before ending up at Royal Ascot. At the Chelsea Flower Show, I worked on him in a garden that I built. It was like a mocked up studio. He was there for a week and from there he went to Royal Ascot for a week and then back to his barn. The week at Royal Ascot was lovely but exhausting. I have never answered so many questions about my work before. Every time I started working on him, I got interrupted for questions and I think he was probably the most photographed horse of the entire Royal meeting!” Edward has an easy charm and I can understand why he and his sculpture is such a big hit wherever they go. I couldn’t resist

quizzing him about what the future holds and whether he would consider doing an equine sculpture here in South Africa. “The future? I’d love to do more life size horse work, but my work ranges from small scale desktop pieces to large than life pieces. Horses especially, since they are such majestic animals, they are almost freaks of nature in their ability to run at such great speeds. I tend to gravitate towards the bigger, stronger animals, which gives me a bit more inspiration to push my style through in a piece. “I recently attended the Breeders Cup in California where I had quite a lot of interest in my work. I think it would be fun to be working on a life size sculpture at either the Kentucky Derby or the Breeders Cup next year. I would love to do a stallion in South Africa. It is a country I have yet to visit. Perhaps I can arrange a visit to Cape Town to coincide with the January Yearling Sale or the J & B Met. I think it would be a great place to showcase my work. I might even bring my sculpture of Dubawi with”, he adds with a smile.

SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM WINS RACING. IT’S A RUSH INTERNATIONAL JOCKEYS CHALLENGE

he South African team carried their dominance into the second leg of the Jockeys International at Kenilworth and gave champion jockey S’manga Khumalo the perfect start to his reign as captain.

Piere Strydom rode a double and that was just enough for him to scrape home in the day’s individual event by one point over local hero Bernard Fayd’Herbe. Anthony Delpech was the runaway victor ludorum over the two days of the Challenge. This event always captures the public’s imagination and, having been promoted this year by Racing It’s A Rush, a nice sized and enthusiastic crowd turned out to watch the deciding leg. The South Africans carried a commanding advantage of 255

points to 152 into the day after Anthony Delpech had won two of the Challenge races at Turffontein on the Saturday and Richard Fourie one. Germany’s Andreas Helfenbein had given the Internationals the lead after the first race of the two day Challenge but it was all South Africa from then onward. Delpech got one hand on the victor ludorum trophy by storming clear in the opening challenge event over 1600m aboard the Dean Kannemeyer-trained Dynasty filly Indaba. Adam Kirby finished runner up, but Bernard Fayd’Herbe, S’Manga Khumalo and Muzi Yeni filled the next three places and South Africa had increased their lead to 321-186.

Delpech unfortunately didn’t have a ride in the next, so had to settle for an automatic seven points. Piere Strydom rode a perfectly timed race in this 1600m event on the Brett Crawford-trained Jet Master gelding Independence, who relished the strong pace set by International captain James Doyle aboard Valerio. Fayd’Herbe pipped Doyle for second and as the latter was the only international in the top five placings the Challenge was all but over as a contest as the South Africans now led by 397 to 224.Bernard Fayd’Herbe was using his local knowledge to full effect and wrapped up the Challenge for South Africa in the next race over 1800m by winning aboard his old guv’nor Mike Bass’ charge Saint Sophia.

The Dynasty filly was a comfortable winner and it was once again South Africans who headed the scramble for the minor positions, with Gregory Benoist’s fourth place being the best the Internationals could manage. Yeni finished runner up in this race, while Delpech’s third place gave him an unassailable lead in the race for Victor Ludorum as he was now 50 points clear of second-placed Fayd’Herbe. Fayd’Herbe went into the last event eight ahead of Delpech on the day and 14 ahead of Strydom, so the race for this accolade still had the public biting their nails. However, Strydom was at his best again in this 1200m race and his victory aboard the Glen Kotzen-trained Roaring Wind took him within two winners of a career tally of 5000. It also made him the day’s leading rider by the narrowest of margins over a gallant Fayd’Herbe, whose mount Alpha Pegasi finished second. South Africa’s superiority was complete as they had won the second day by a massive 292 points to 136. The overall tally over the two days was 547 to 288. Anthony Delpech scored 135 points over the two days and was followed by Strydom on 105 and Fayd’Herbe on 93. Delpech was the winner of the first day’s individual prize with 79 points to Fourie’s 61 and Kirby’s 40. Strydom’s individual score of 73 was followed by Fayd’Herbe on 72 and Delpech on 56. The internationals did not enjoy the best of luck over the two days but certainly enjoyed their stay and were enthusiastic throughout. All of their riders would be welcomed back to take part again in this captivating event. 50

Throughout the 300 years of thoroughbred breeding history, top sires have been revered for the contribution they have made to the fortunes of those lucky enough to have been associated with them. 52

rthur “Bull” Hancock, the master of Claiborne who inherited and built on the legacy of stallion supremacy in America which his father had established, famously commented on the effect that stallions have on breeders fortunes: “a good bull is half the herd, a bad bull is the whole herd”. His opinion is undoubtedly more apt in the modern breeding world than it was in his time because the top sires in the world nowadays serve books as high as 400 mares a year in dual-hemisphere duties. In Bull Hancock’s time a top sire would cover no more than 60 mares as a full book. If a stallion fails in today’s times, his effect on 400 mares could be catastrophic. Sires that become great producers of champion racehorses don’t always pass their genes to the next generation through their offspring. When they do it’s not always through both sons and daughters.Very few succeed as sires of sires and others make top broodmare sires but very few make both. Most of the world’s top

sires don’t get progeny to carry their genes to further generations so when you get a sire line that does both, it is pure gold. I was researching how many sire lines in South Africa had succeeded as sires of sires and champion broodmare sires. Undoubtedly Al Mufti and Fort Wood are standouts in modern breeding in South Africa in both regards. That is why I decided to pay tribute to Captain Al, a truly great South African sire. His profile as a producer of top racers is well known and serialised as a record breaking sire and now his emergence as SA’s next top broodmare sire is even better news. Happily it’s true to form as he fits a near idealistic profile of a broodmare sire. It’s early days to comment on his future as a sire of sires as, unlike Dynasty and Jet Master, he has no commercially syndicated sons at stud – yet! Because he was a home-grown local-bred sprinter miler he didn’t have the luxury of a queue of top stud farms competing for him to join their stallion barn. South African bred sires at that stage, even as classic winners, were considered to be lower value than poorlyraced, well connected imports. Happily Captain Al, Dynasty and Jet Master have changed that in a very big way in the last 15 years. Captain Al was fortunately close to the heart of his breeder John Köster who equally fortunately enjoyed close ties with the heirs of Captain Al’s late owner and dear Köster friend “uncle” Manny dos Santos. And that’s where this modern day success story that is closer to the heart of more South African breeders than any 54

other stallion success story I can remember began. He and Jet Master entered stud in the same year, with Jet Master as winner of more Gr1 races than any other horse in South African history at the time – his record has ironically only subsequently been bettered by his great son Pocket Power. Jet Master, by virtue of his status as a great champion of the turf, retired at a service fee almost the same as Captain Al’s share price.There is a big difference in the price of shares and service fees to all stallions and very often today, share prices can be worth 10 times a top stallion’s service fee. Because of his popularity amongst the breeding community John Köster was a huge draw card in laying foundation to “The Captain’s” stud career. I was in the fortunate position of being offered the job to form the syndicate and act as syndicate manager. We had no idea how popular the horse would be when we invited potential shareholders to lunch at Kenilworth Racecourse to present his credentials. We planned a 40 share syndicate but during the share offering we were swamped by breeders wanting to take multiple shares and ended up with a 45 share syndicate to try and accommodate as many as possible. The die was cast, he had a good team on board. In Captain Al we saw one of South Africa’s most rewarding stallion syndicates formed. He subsequently influenced and even changed

the course of some peoples lives. The syndicate recently presented past and present shareholders a keepsake at a function in Cape Town to celebrate his continuing success and to thank them for their contribution. That occasion, like so many previous syndicate get-togethers, heard stories recounted of share sales, top yearling prices, Gr1 wins and great partnerships that had huge impact on peoples lives. One day these stories will be saved in writing but that’s not the object of this piece because that story can only be told when the game is over and it’s far from over.

yet became top broodmare sires – not only from the help of the genes that enabled them to succeed on the track, but because that prowess on the track attracted the very best mares in large numbers when they began their stud careers. The superior matrons they covered are well documented as succeeding despite the failure of their sires because of the enormous power and depth of their own pedigrees.

An exciting new chapter has just begun for Captain Al as the first of the new generation sire to be credited with Gr1 winners through his daughters. Another fine feather in his cap of firsts. Gr1 winning colt Potent Power (National Emblem – Solar Galleon, a winning half-sister to Gr3 winner of 2 races Hard Rock ) from only Captain Al’s 3rd producing daughter at stud was followed with a Gr1 winning filly, Same Jurisdiction (Mambo in Seattle – Diana de Carlo, one time winner, her dams only winner from 3 foals) in the Thekwini Stakes this year. Like his sire, Captain Al’s early start to his career as an emerging broodmare sire is surely as much to do with his well-founded pedigree as it has to do with the all-round superior physical stature of his daughters.

When it works it works: Captain Al upgraded the fortunes of some really mediocre mares in his early years and produced Gr1 horses when given the chance.There is no question that his early books of mares included some prominent mares and well related families, but pound for pound his early books didn’t compare to most of the other young stallions that commanded higher fees at the time. Despite that, his first crop saw him compete stride for stride with Jet Master as the they rewrote the South African record book of 2yo sire earnings and obliterated previous freshman sire records. It was a heads up heads down duel to the wire; Jet Master prevailing on the stakes side, a short head in front, and Captain Al beating him by number of winners. The team behind Captain Al were elated, especially when they analysed the strength (or lack thereof) of the dams that produced his early stakes horses.

Before I get into how Captain Al has started to make his mark as an emerging broodmare sire, we should be reminded that some of the world’s top racehorses, like Secretariat, failed at stud and

on the other hand serialised the SA 2yo sire championship with a record 6 consecutive victories and 31 Gr1 horses to his credit. He broke more records of win ratios and strike rate of winners, at all levels, than any sire on record. Like his champion father Al Mufti, it was said that his fillies were better than his colts. That’s easy to understand when you see a top filly like Carry On Alice take on the colts in a race like the Gr1 SA Nursery, a race respected as a king maker, and beat them and then take them on again in another Gr1 soon after and beat all bar one of them home. I remember the early days when it was almost considered a loss to get a colt by Al Mufti, but then along came the horses that stamped him as a sire of sires like Captain Al, Victory Moon, The Sheik and Cataloochee. It’s amazing how the market perceives sires to be the opposite of what they really are. The Captain has had more colt winners than fillies and 4 of his 9 Gr1 winners are colts. KEENELAND TO HOST 2015 BREEDERS’ CUP “We want a place where those who love horses can come and picnic with us and thrill to the sport of the Bluegrass. We are not running a race plant to hear the click of the mutuel machines. We want them to come out here to enjoy God’s sunshine, fresh air and to watch horses race,” said Hal Price Headley, who served as Keeneland’s first president. 68

he seventy-seven year-old Keeneland Racecourse will host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time in the event’s 32 year existence. This has stirred excitement in racing enthusiasts, local farms, and the greater Lexington community. Taylor Made Sales Agency Vice President, Mark Taylor, commented, “I am very grateful to Keeneland for stepping up to bring the Breeders’ Cup to Lexington. Keeneland is constantly investing their resources back into the racing and breeding industry. This is another example of Keeneland being committed to our breeding industry and the Central Kentucky community. It will be a huge win for all Kentuckians and everyone involved in our industry.” Keeneland Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Vince Gabbert remarked, “It is an amazing concept that we could host something of this magnitude. It is the closest that Lexington, Kentucky will ever get to hosting the ‘Super Bowl,’ and we feel like it

will be huge boost to the industry and especially to the community.” He added, “The community was really a large selling point to Breeders’ Cup to host the event here in Lexington. They knew that our city and the surrounding communities would embrace this event like no other host site. There has already been a Host Committee formed and there will be a festival in Lexington leading up to Breeders’ Cup to celebrate the magnitude of the event.” Since its opening meet in the fall of October 1936, Keeneland has always had close ties with the Lexington community. It was created by Hal Price Headley and Major Louis Beard as a nonprofit racecourse to bring horse racing back to the bluegrass after the closing of the Kentucky Association track near downtown Lexington in 1933. Along with eight others in the volunteer committee, their goal was to create a unique racing venue as a community project. Their racecourse would be run as completely non-profit; all proceeds would be returned as purse money for INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

Breeders’ Cup History: John Gaines, a leading Thoroughbred racehorse owner and breeder, initially proposed the idea of the Breeders’ Cup at the 1982 awards luncheon for the Kentucky Derby Festival. Later that year, Breeders’ Cup Limited was formed, and the inaugural event was held two years later, in 1984. It was a one-day extravaganza for international competitors until 2006, when it was spread into a two day championship that stretched both Friday and Saturday. With the exception of 1996 when it was held at Canada’s Woodbine Racetrack, the Breeders’ Cup has always been held in the United States. Louisville Kentucky’s Churchill Downs, and Arcadia, California’s Santa Anita are tied as the most frequent venues for the Breeders’ Cup at eight. However, Santa Anita is scheduled to pull ahead in 2016 when the event will return. For the following year, it will remain in California, moving to the historical beachside Del Mar Racetrack. Even so, Churchill Downs seems most popular among spectators, as seven of the eight most attended Breeders’ Cups, including the most attended, have taken place at Churchill Downs.

races, improvement of facilities, and any profit remaining would be donated to charity. The committee originally selected twenty possible locations for their new track. Specifically, they eyed some land owned by Jack Keene, a Kentucky horseman. This property had been owned by his ancestors since 1792, but, in the 1920s, Jack Keene had ambitious dreams of creating his own private racing and training facility on the land there. He constructed a superstructure of completely native Kentucky limestone that included a nine furlong racetrack, stone castle and barn; a 100,000 gallon water tank, a roadway, and plenty of luscious acreage that remained unused. However, these elaborate constructions drained his budget. He was forced to claim bankruptcy and part with his grand life’s work. However, he would leave his legacy to horse racing. Jack Keene sold the property to Headley, Beard, and their committee for a price far below its true worth, and Keeneland would become his namesake. Fifteen months after the closing of the Kentucky Association racetrack, Keeneland held its opening day in the fall of 1936. Iconic to Lexington, horse capital of the world, the venue has never hosted the two-days of Breeders’ Cup racing largely due to its small accommodations that would not be able to handle the massive attendance numbers. Today, this issue still poses a challenge for the racetrack. Vince Gabbert stated,“It is something that we have thought about for a long time, but not really felt like we could host in a proper format. But with the advancement of 70

temporary facilities and the increased need for higher hospitality events, we felt like we could not only handle the crowd but put on the type of experience that our guests would hope for and expect.” To ensure proper accommodations for the Breeders’ Cup 2015 spectators, Keeneland is adding more than seven thousand premium seats to the homestretch, bringing total reserved seating capacity to twenty-one thousand. Around the clubhouse side, they are installing high-end single and double decker tents. Keeneland will also be offering seating in the sales pavilion, the Entertainment Center, and general admission. Keeneland officials estimate the crowd will reach a total of 45,000 on both Friday and Saturday during the Breeders’ Cup. However, the racecourse intends to limit on-track tickets for the event to 28,000, which would make it the least attended Breeders’ Cup in history. As of yet, the smallest crowd at a Breeders’ Cup was 37,246 at Belmont Park in 1995. The 28,000 tickets on the grandstand side are divided nearly evenly. Ten thousand tickets will be sold as general admission, another 10,000 will be offered for the open-air grandstand seating and dining areas, and 8,000 seats will be sold in the luxury chalets and mega-tent which will house 3,000. Officials for the Breeders’ Cup have final say on establishing the limit for reserved tickets, and have not settled on an exact figure for 2015 at Keeneland. Tickets are scheduled to become available on March 1, 2015, though some tickets will be offered for presale

to loyal customers of the nearly eighty year-old racecourse. Keeneland has also planned accommodations on their grounds outside the racetrack on their rolling acreage. They will be opening up tailgating areas on ‘The Hill’ and ‘The Meadow.’ There, spectators will be able to bet the races, watch from big screen televisions, and enjoy a variety of food trucks. Gabbert explained, “We are fortunate to have 1100 acres here at Keeneland and will engage our entire campus to allow as many people as possible to experience the event. And because of the community involvement, we will have a number of satellite venues to watch and wager on those two days as well. With the use of our temporary facilities on the grounds and the engagement of the entire campus, we want to really focus on the experience for all our patrons and make it a memorable event for all those in attendance.”

The main stabling on the backstretch area at the Lexington race course has always been open to the public, and the world championship contenders will be housed in the separate, restricted area for privacy and security. Currently, Keeneland is working out contingency plans for horsemen who regularly stable their horses in the Rice Road barns.

Over the 2014 fall meet, Keeneland has been preparing for next year’s event. Gabbert remarked, “We have used some of the luxury chalets as temporary structures this fall and will continue to experiment with the logistics of the event. We want to work out as many issues as possible prior to October of 2015 and will be fully prepared when the event actually happens.”

In recent years, events and parties leading up to the Breeders’ Cup have become popular among connections, celebrities, and racing enthusiasts. “There will be some events at the track, but more importantly there will be a number of events in downtown Lexington and the many horse farms in the area are planning a number of events as well to give our out of town guests an opportunity to see up close and personal, what this industry means to our community.” Gabbert stated.

Keeneland recently switched out its PolyTrack surface for conventional dirt. While some racecourses have to make repeated adjustments and alterations when using new surfaces, Keeneland has experienced great racing – the best, some say, the track has had in years – and they have been more than satisfied with the PolyTrack. Gabbert commented, “We have been very

champion racehorse is what every trainer dreams of having in the stable. The search for that outstanding youngster at the yearling sales and the thrill of producing a champion, is what trainers say “gets them up in the morning.” According to the National Horse Racing Authority, South Africa has just over 5 500 registered horses in training. At the annual horse racing Oscars evening, the South African Equus Awards celebrate only the top 10 horses that have earned celebrity status for superior performance in their respective divisions. So what is it about these elite horses and others like them, that puts them a cut above the rest ? At a standing glance, these horses ‘catch your eye’ and ‘look the part’. “All my champions have presence”, says passionate Randjesfontein trainer, Michael Azzie . “You can see they have something special, that X-Factor”, he adds. Dean Kannemeyer, who won two Equus Awards this year with Capetown Noir and Hot Ticket says “they give the appearance of being in control and exude confidence”. Justin Snaith of the Snaith Racing Team, who won the coveted Equus Award for Champion Trainer this past season and also scooped the most prestigious title of Horse

of the Year , with Vodacom Durban July winner Legislate, says that top horses like Legislate and his other 2014 award winning horse, In the Fast Lane ,“are always keen and alert”. “They have a habit of always looking into the distance”, which is indicative that “their minds are always active”. They are continually aware of all that is going on around them, all the time” explains Justin. This is often a sign of intelligence and good character. With intelligence and good character comes an honest or bold eye, that not only horsemen and women of yesteryear looked for in quality horses, but many modern day horsemen and women too.

In thoroughbred racing the horses are the stars of the show. They are the athletes, as much if not more so than the jockeys who ride them. “All my graded winners are physically athletic, but then I always go for a nice looking horse, with a good hindquarter and gaskin “says Michael. Dean agrees saying that “ a good hock and hindquarter is important, as that’s where the horse’s power comes from. It’s the pushing leg”. Dean also adds that he has “never seen a good horse without a deep girth”. Being deep in the girth generally implies “a big lung capacity and that is important for racing” he explains. David Marlin BSc PhD, an international equine respiratory and exercise specialist, says that “by the time a horse crosses the finish line in a 1000 meter race , he will have moved somewhere around 1 800 litres of air in and out of the lungs “. This equates to moving approximately 22 litres of air into and out of the lung, every second of that race. Hence it is easy to understand why many experienced trainers, when selecting yearlings, insist that they are deep in the girth. “Obviously you want a horse that is as correctly conformed as possible, but they do come in all shapes and sizes”, says Justin philosophically. It can be that trainers have a preference for size and type and naturally gravitate towards acquiring these types to train, but “racing is not an exact science”, adds Justin wryly. Dennis Drier, trainer of Equus Champion Older Mare / Filly, said Beach Beauty was “small and insignificant” the day she arrived at his yard in Summerveld and even when mature, “wasn’t a big filly, physically”. “There are also many yearlings who have failed the vet at the sales “ for reasons such as conformational defects or weaknesses, “but have gone on to be champions on the track “, adds Justin. And even if you do purchase a perfectly conformed horse, “he may not have the heart for racing”, says Dean . 82

As a competitive sport, horse racing can come to be pressurised not just for trainers, jockeys, owners and all those involved in the game, but more importantly, the horses. In a constant striving for faster times and improved performance, much is asked of the horses. Boundaries are often pushed and “if a horse doesn’t have a good temperament, it won’t handle the pressure ”, states Justin simply. Asked what characterises his champions, Justin is quick to reply, “temperament, temperament and pedigree”. In that order. Whilst a horse may have the bloodlines to race at the highest level, all is in vain if it is unable to remain calm amongst all the activity and in so doing, conserve energy for when it’s needed. Dean described the morning of the 2003 Vodadom Durban July when Dynasty, who went on to win the race, found time to sleep on a bed of shavings at the Clairwood Training Centre before being loaded in the float for Greyville. He was always calm when arriving at the track for his races and remained that way, even when led into the Parade Ring. However, when the jockey was given a legup, he “knew it was time to race and it was game on” , laughs Dean. “Being able to handle themselves and not get overworked prior to running, seems key with these horses. “Beach Beauty never used to sweat up ahead of a race”, comments Dennis. This attribute coupled with being able “to maintain themselves in a race”, says Michael, is paramount to their success.

Michael believes that top class horses and champions, “develop a winning mentality”. This is a quality that sets them apart from others. If you have ever wondered if they understand the nature of competition, Dean quickly dispels any qualms by saying “they compete to win”. I guess this should not be surprising as they are bred to run and the breed has been refined over centuries for this purpose. Dean goes on to say “a top horse, when going head-to-head with another, will always keep trying to put his head in front”. It would seem that these horses are able to run through the so-called pain barrier and then “keep on offering more”, says Michael . “There is always stress towards the end of a race and it comes down to which horse can stay fastest, for longer”, explains Justin. “Dancer’s Daughter is a very good example”he says . Dean would agree and adds Free My Heart, a seven time group winner Jallad gelding. “He was always scary for the jockeys to ride”, smiles Dean, “as he always came from off the pace.They had to sit quiet on him until the straight, when he would pick them off one at a time and then just keep at it. That’s competitive spirit”. Free My Heart loved his racing, competing for an incredible six seasons, far longer than most horses in his day. He won 12 races and over R3 million. Free My Heart and other horses like him “make it look easy”, says Justin. I guess they are no different to our top human athletes.

One only has to think of Usain Bolt and the effortless manner in which he runs the 100 meters or Mo Farah over the 10 000meters. Every racehorse instinctively feels it’s own power and agility, but a good horse will only unleash it’s immense energy when the jockey tells it to do so.“Dynasty used to wait for Karl Neisius to squeeze him in the straight”, signalling the moment to give it his all. “Dynasty would physically lower his body in order to change gear and accelerate”, describes Dean. Current Horse of the Year, Legislate, has a powerful turn of foot and “can go from a canter to a gallop in three strides”, says Justin. “His acceleration is phenomenal”, he adds. Dennis concurs, saying that despite her size, “Beach Beauty’s fantastic burst of speed could put five or more lengths between her and the rest of the field, before they knew she had made her run”. Beach Beauty’s ability and performance on the track has left her trainer in awe, describing her as “unbelievable” and him wondering if he will ever come across another thoroughbred quite like her. Whether he does or not, it won’t be for a lack of trying, as to be associated with and share in the great performances that that these top horses and champions willingly give, is what the exciting game of horseracing is all about.

A Legend of the Turf

n the first Tuesday in November, a big chestnut with a blaze came second in “the race that stops a nation”, the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. Second you might say, so who won then? Well a German stallion called Protectionist, who flew home, beating Red Cadeaux by a staggering four lengths. Quite a beating, over a trip of 3200m, one might say. Yet despite his victory, by the largest winning margin in the recent history of the Cup, in the hearts and minds of many, the day and the race belonged to Red Cadeaux. You see Red Cadeaux, was just two months shy of turning nine that day, an unheard of feat by a gallant horse, with a heart as big and as willing as his large chestnut frame. And not only did he run second, leaving a stellar field of young whippersnappers in his wake, he also became the highest earning racehorse in the history of British racing, with prize money totalling over 4 million pounds.

Yet Red Cadeaux or Red as he is affectionately known, started his career as a three-year-old in a Division 1 Maiden Stakes at Yarmouth, where he finished an uninspiring eighth. For two years, the big chestnut crisscrossed the country. Kempton, Rippon, Haydock, Doncaster, Lingfield, Chester, Wolverhampton, Pontefract, Goodwood, Newmarket and even a hop to Deauville, Red Cadeaux visited them all.With four victories and five second places from nineteen starts, Red was no slouch, but he certainly was no world-beater either, just a good, reliable handicapper. That all changed on the 25th of June 2011, the day Red decided to scoot home in the Group 3 Curragh Cup over 2800m, to win by nine lengths. Now a five year old, the big chestnut was coming into his own and his own was the long distances races. His trainer, Ed Dunlop, was no stranger to travelling horses and after Red’s Curragh victory he decided to throw caution to the wind and head Down Under for a shot at the Melbourne Cup.

Now one Group 3 victory does not a Cup contender make and while the media was curious about the decision to bring Red to Melbourne, his form was not remotely in the league of the other Cup contenders and he was mostly written off. Ironically, this was to be a recurring theme for almost every one of his visits Down Under. Dunlop did not make matters any better either, by working Red quietly, almost leisurely at the Werribee Quarantine Centre. Each morning the press would drag themselves out of bed, hoping to see the big chestnut stretch out and each morning he had a gentle canter. Red Cadeaux was certainly an impressive looking horse, but with French challenger Dunaden putting in eye catching gallops on a daily basis, the chestnut had few friends. To rub further salt in the wound, Dunlop then decided to gallop on the one morning that he knew there would not be a soul at Werribee, Derby Day. Cup day dawned, although it had been raining earlier in the week, the ground had dried out again and with it went the chances of “mud loving” Red. But the Cup is quirky and it is never a straight forward race. At the famous clock tower, 250m from the finish, Christophe Lemaire set Dunaden alight and the elegant bay charged into the lead, with the race seemingly at his mercy. Up the outside however, galloping as if his life depended on it, appeared a big chestnut with a white blaze. Nobody had told Red that the ground was too hard for him and under Michael Rodd, he inched past Dunaden and got his neck in front. Dunaden fought back, clawing back Red’s slender lead, before both horses flashed across the line as one. It took three minutes to separate the two, three minutes of utter silence as the crowd waited for the outcome,

almost as long as the race itself. Finally, the number three appeared on the board. Dunaden had won the Cup by a mere centimetre. 3200 gut wrenching meters and it came down to a centimetre or three pixels as Dunlop likes to put it. A year later Red returned, but with the race run at a muddling pace and carrying a hefty weight, it was not to be. Red finished midfield and there was talk that perhaps the now six-year-old gelding had had enough. Dunlop however, had other ideas and sent Red onwards from Werribee to Hong Kong for the 2012 Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Vase over 2400m. Again, the media wrote off the chestnut, especially after his disappointing Melbourne Cup run, but Red and long time rider and travel companion Stephen Nicholson, steadily went about their business. Every morning Red would come out for morning trackwork, ears pricked, before tanking around the track, with Stephen hanging on, feet firmly on the dashboard. The Hong Kong Vase was to be his greatest triumph.Trading blows with Jaguar Mail, stride for stride down the Sha Tin straight, Red Cadeaux, who had lost the Cup by a mere centimetre, finally got his nose in front to claim his first Group 1 victory in style. It simply was Red’s day and nobody was going to take it away from him. “Even if we went for one more lap no-one could pass me today!” said a delighted Gerald Mosse post race. Would he now retire, having finally won that elusive Group 1? No, Dunlop was on a roll and in March 2013, Red headed for Meydan, home of the Dubai World Cup. while Red could run for days, sprinting was a bit past his aging legs. Afterall this was to be the year of Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom. The mighty Animal Kingdom had had ten starts for four victories and five seconds, most of those coming in Group company. Red had had thirty-three starts for seven victories, with only the last three being in Group company. Red however, did not know he was in illustrious company, he simply enjoyed the sunshine and the feel of the Tapeta under his feet. The race panned out exactly as expected. Animal Kingdom stormed into the lead a long way from home with the race at his mercy, but out of the chasing pack, popped a chestnut face. Red was racing the only way he knew. He was neither fast enough nor young enough to catch the flying Animal Kingdom, but he had a willing heart and when the line came, he was in second, just two lengths behind Animal Kingdom.The joy in the Red Cadeaux camp was indescribable. Running on an unknown surface, against stellar opposition, at the sprightly age of seven and over a distance far too short for him, Red had triumphed against all odds. With the bit between his teeth, Dunlop was determined to conquer the Melbourne Cup and Red again set off on the long journey Down Under. Again, the erstwhile handicapper was friendless. By now a seven-year-old and winless since his Hong Kong triumph, Red was largely ignored in the betting. However, what few people knew, was that Red hates rain. England is not his favourite place and neither is slogging around in the mud and driving rain. Warmth and sunshine was much more to his liking and each year he blossomed on arrival at Werribee. Observant track watchers would have seen Stephen hanging on to Red, charging around the track, ears pricked.The signs were there and on the first Tuesday in November, Red Cadeaux stormed down the Flemington straight, 90

past the clock tower, to finish second by three quarters of a length to Fiorente. This time he was not the British challenger beaten by a centimeter, this time he was hailed as a hero, a seven-year-old, who could finish second in the Cup! Surely, he would now retire. A lacklustre year back home in England followed and when the announcement came that Red Cadeaux was in quarantine for a fourth attempt at the Cup, even his faithful followers, wondered whether it was a bridge to far. Yet Red was having none of that.The chestnut gelding, with the gentle temperament, who loves carrots and polos, also loves Australia and when photos started emerging of him bucking and leaping about at Werribee, we all knew it would be alright. Yet just how alright nobody could have imagined. For on the first Tuesday in November, as the field turned for home in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, a chestnut face with a blaze, popped out of the pack under Gerald Mosse and set off for home. Surely, he could not do it; surely it was too much to ask? In the end, it wasn’t too much to ask. It was simply a case of a younger, stronger horse being better on the day. Red Cadeaux ran his race his way and when he flashed across the line in second, the crowd stood and cheered. The biggest winning distance for many years didn’t matter, what mattered was that the almost nine-year-old, had beaten a star studded field home to finish second for a third time, thus etching his name in the record books. He may not have won a string a Group races, or nor was he bred in the purple, yet he is the stuff dreams are made of. A true soldier of the turf, with 47 starts, seven victories and earnings of £4 million behind his name, Red Cadeaux is that once in a lifetime horse, a legend in his own time.

To many, Lexington, Kentucky and the iconic Thoroughbred nursery that lays along Versailles Road from the Bluegrass Field airport towards Lexington, are synonymous. Bound by pristine white fences, rolling green pastures leading to the signature green roofed, red trimmed white barns, Calumet Farm has long been established as a leader in the centuries- old sport of Thoroughbred racing. erhaps the most storied farm in all of Americas’ Thoroughbred history, in 2012 the farm began a new chapter in its long legacy, when the newly formed Calumet Investment Group acquired the almost 800 acre property for a reported figure of close to $40 million dollars, vowing to restore Calumet to it’s historical tradition as a important jewel in the crown of the Thoroughbred industry, operating as a private operation. Calumet firmly established its’ place in history with two Triple Crown winners (Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948 ), breeder of eight winners of the Kentucky Derby and campaigning a ninth, the last being Forward Pass in 1968 and three Filly Triple Crown winners. The legendary Alydar, about who much has been written, ran second in each leg of the 1978 Triple Crown to his arch rival, Affirmed, and both stood at stud at the farm. Calumet also is the only farm to have won the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year, which was repeated twice – in 1949 with Wistful and Ponder, and again in 1952 with Real Delight and Hill Gail. Calumet also boasts eight winners of the Preakness Stakes, the most

recent being Oxbow, who will stand at stud at Calumet for the 2015 breeding season. Remarkably, Calumet owned horses, Citation and Coaltown, finished one-two in the 1948 Kentucky Derby. Eleven Calumet horses were inducted into the National Museum of the Racing Hall of Fame. The excitement is high as Calumet once again seeks to be a solid force with new stallion power. With Ken Wilkins, who brings a lifetime of experience in developing a formidable roster of stallion power at the helm as Stallion Director, the upcoming breeding season will offer recent additions to the Stallion Roster, including Red Rocks, Ready’s Image, and Oxbow, who will join the battery of stallions already in residence. FRONTRUNNERS IN THE BLUEGRASS Count Henryk de Kwiatkowski, a Polish aeronautical engineer and enthusiastic polo player, art collector and racehorse owner who had admired the farm for years, flew in just an hour before it was to be offered at public auction. Having made his fortune leasing and brokering aircraft, he was able to acquire the farm for $17.175 million, bidding enthusiastically in the white tent set up on the lawn in front of the Stallion Barn, while veteran Auctioneer, Walt Robertson pounded his gavel before the assembled crowd. De Kwiatkowski vowed to restore the farm to it’s former glory, never to harm a blade of grass, and to preserve the farm in it’s entirety, protecting it from hungry developers. Upon his passing, the farm was left in charge of his children, who ultimately decided to make it available, due to their far flung residences around the world.

Eddie Kane, with a prior twenty year association with Lanes End as Broodmare Manager, was engaged to oversee the running of Calumet Farm’s day to day operation. With over two hundred mares on the farm to keep up with, Eddie and his team are kept quite busy, since foaling and breeding starts early in Kentucky. Among the broodmare band are California Sunset, dam of VE Day, Cho Cho San, dam of Blueskiesnrainbows,Violet Lady, dam of Sky Ring, and Star Struck, winner of the Matchmaker Stakes. In the centre of the farm, Calumet’s private cemetery pays homage to it’s horses that have passed on to greener pastures. Amid the neatly manicured horseshoe- shaped lay out, stand the gravestones of Forward Pass, Citation, Alydar, Iron Liege, Our Mims, Pensive, Ponder, Whirlaway and ones, never to be forgotten. A visit to the cemetery is an awesome experience, to be surrounded by the ghosts of greatness. The barns are filled with broodmares, once again foals are frisking in the lush green pastures, buildings are being restored, plans are being made.

Under the new ownership and management, Calumet eagerly steps forward into a new era, determined to regain it’s place in history at the apex of the industry, while keeping close ties to the hallowed land and revelling in raising good race horses.

iemonte Stud is based in the heart of racehorse country in KZN, a beautiful area of Summerveld which sees multiple Group champions coming out of its training tracks year after year. Named after the province of Piemonte in Italy where the Scribante’s family home remains (which Lee returns to every year), the stud is a family owned business with the father and son duo of Lee and Dino Scribante, both sharing a common love of speed and competition in a variety of sports and disciplines.

goals to be the best, including growing hydroponic feed for the horses on a daily basis which is paying off, judging by the size of the bone in their foals and overall well-being of their animals. Their mares and foals are all brought into their stables every evening.

Lee and Dino not only produce and own Group winning racehorses, but they are also actively involved in the highly competitive arenas of racing cars, pigeons and showing Koi at the highest level.

“The farm that I have at present is our home. My wife Nancy came from a farming background – and I being a farmer at heart, found that it was a place that I could move to and follow my dream. I would love it to be five times bigger! Fortunately I can keep all my racing pigeons, show Koi, my collection of cars and racecars (I still race cars at my tender age). As we say in this industry, ‘it ticks all the boxes’.”

Both astute businessmen, Lee and Dino provide a strong ‘hands on’ managerial approach to their farm and the love, passion and care they have for their horses can be felt the minute you arrive at the beautiful grounds of Piemonte.

Lee competed and achieved his colours provincially and nationally in both athletics and boxing and this played a part in his selection of his first racehorse. “As a young student at the University of Cape Town, I received a call one Friday evening from my father telling me to go to Milnerton training track at 5:30 the very next morning, to see a Mr Willie Kleb,” Lee explains. “I duly got there at 5:30am and introduced myself to Mr Kleb who happened to be one of the doyens of South African trainers in that era. He showed me six horses that were circling in the ring and told me that I had to choose one of them. All I knew about horses at that time was that they had a head and a tail and that they eat 24/7 - I asked him to help me choose one. His answer was “no, your Dad said you must choose!” Lee adapted his philosophy of what he believed an athlete should look like, selecting a horse called Sonata. “Mr Kleb asked me why I chose him. I said that the horse looked the most athletic and capable to me. He then pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, and said “no matter what you chose, that was the one you were getting anyway!” Sonata went to Port Elizabeth at the time and raced in the HB Christian Memorial Handicap three weeks later and won over 2000m. Lee says excitedly, “I thought well, this game is quite easy! However the 44 years since then have proven to me that the game is actually not so easy, and definitely not for the faint of heart.”

The Scribante’s are very family orientated and Lee explains that they have always raced horses “ for all these years with my father and brother, but my interest has always been in the breeding.” Lee admits that he has always been a farmer at heart, albeit from a “construction background”. “I retired three or four years ago, having worked seven days a week my whole life, and now I want to follow my passion in terms of what I want to do, and we put that into Piemonte. When I moved here I bought the property on either side of me and expanded, but I can only keep 20-25 mares on this farm so the majority of my mares are sent out to establishments in KZN, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.” Lee has a first class broodmare band comprising of 58 mares in total. They also include the likes of Stakes winning Scripture, who has a fantastic Horse Chestnut at foot, Bold Black-Type Var mare Wishful Eye and Tsunami – the latter has just foaled an outstanding Gimmethegreenlight colt. Her 2013 yearling filly sold at Nationals for R900 000. A few of the outstanding foals roaming the green paddocks of Piemonte include sires Oratorio, Byword, Var, Crusade and of course Await The Dawn. “This is our third year breeding Thoroughbreds and I must INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

emphasise that we sell everything that we breed. Out of force majeure we have had to keep one because he got injured before the KZN Yearling Sale, and he happened to be a winner - not only winning his debut but also the first winner bred by Piemonte, for which we were very proud, of course.” At the 2014 KZN Yearling Sale, Piemonte averaged just under R100 000 for four yearlings sold – the top-priced selling for R150 000, a colt by Ideal World. “We do race, but we buy our horses at the sales and I purchase on pedigree with the hope that the fillies I buy can return to stud. I also believe that youth breeds vitality, so I like to keep the breeding stock young.” With a breeding philosophy of buying the best mares and breeding to the best stallions across South Africa, it reflects in the quality draft Dino Scribante has lined up for the Nationals next year. “We are entering a lovely draft of yearlings for the Nationals in 2015. I have been asked to enter more than what I did previously, I was quite select and chose 12. Amongst them are two Western Winters, three Philanthropists which I really like, a Var, Sail From Seattle and Bold Silvano. Half of the mares they are out of are already proven and I am hoping to be successful at that sale.” Lee admits philosophically: “It becomes a patience game, some pedigrees will work, some pedigrees won’t. You also need an element of luck. Regarding our foals and what we currently have on the ground now, I feel Piemonte is certainly going in the right direction, that’s for sure.” Lee owns shares in a number of prolific stallions across the country, and owned a large percentage in the very exciting son of Giant’s Causeway – the first to come to South Africa – the magnificent *Await The Dawn who stands at Summerhill.

“We purchased shares in Await The Dawn and the reviews about him have been very good. His first crop of youngsters are on the ground now, and I have three here on the farm which tick all of the boxes. “We really liked his sire Giants Causeway - but no one sold me anything when it came to Await The Dawn.” says Lee. “I looked at his races that he competed in and I received feedback from those who trained him in Dubai and it was all very good. The Group races he won in the UK were very impressive and he won easily. He raced in the Gr1 not 100% well, and unfortunately he was never the same horse thereafter. Mick Goss from Summerhill Stud contacted me, we discussed, and shook hands on a deal and things began to fall into place. The horse was offered to Summerhill and I took a percentage in him.” On Saturday mornings Lee can be found at Summerveld training centre, watching his horses work. He has horses in training with various conditioners across the country. “Currently I race horses in partnership with my brother. We have twenty-two horses in training, of that twenty two, eighteen are fillies - which can only mean they will all come back to the farm for breeding,” says Lee with a smile. “We have been fortunate to have raced successfully with the horses we have had, going back to my father. We have run second and fourth in the Met, fourth in the Durban July and we have won numerous Group races including at the time the Gr1 Gold Vase in Durban. Our good horses included the likes of Western Wind, Western Boy, Captive Prince, Knockout, Ziplock and Scripture who has formed part of our broodmare band. PIERE STRYDOM 5000 WINNERS

iere Strydom, 48, has achieved a milestone unmatched by any jockey in the history of South African horseracing – 5 000 career wins. This was achieved today at the Lazerac Ready to Run Stakes Day at Kenilworth, when he partnered the Joey Ramsden trained Act Of War to victory in the Gr.2 Selangor Cup.

The modest “Striker’ earned his nickname in the 1980’s when he was an apprentice jockey. Racing journalist Rob Roy noticed his ability of coming from behind to catch tiring horses on the line - and the nickname, and winning flair, has stuck ever since. When Strydom is not racing at least three times a week, he spends a lot of time doing homework in terms of studying horses and their form. “I do believe that is a great part of my success in terms of knowing which horses are better suited to certain types of races and surfaces,” he explains. His fitness is of paramount importance. “It’s a constant battle

because if you don’t ride in races often enough, you lose a lot of fitness, but I try to maintain a daily routine of stretching. I also try and maintain an athletic yet light framed physique,” he says.

Strydom, who was born in Port Elizabeth, down the road from Fairview Racecourse, was born into a racing family – His father Hekkie Strydom was a Jockey and is now a trainer in PE. The oldest of five siblings, Strydom went to Altona Primary, and spent one year at Framesby High School before joining the South African Jockey Academy in Durban. Not surprisingly, his career highlight is reaching his 5 000 career wins. Out of the 5 000 races, he says the win that stands out most was at the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Sprint, riding JJ the Jet Plane in 2010, a win he describes as magical. He may have achieved something no other jockey in South Africa has ever done, but Strydom has no intention of retiring any time soon. INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

The yard of Joe Soma Racing is a small, bespoke racing stables at the Turffontein training facility, situated at Turffontein racecourse. The team hosted a social and educational morning at the stables on Sunday the 26th of October for owners and guests to interact with their horses and get to know each other.

wners are encouraged to be a part of their horses’ racing careers and to be actively involved in the entire process, not just on race days. “Our yard is intimate and personal, maintaining an optimum number of around 50 horses. This ensures that each horse gets personal attention and we spend time learning each individual’s character and preferences”, says trainer Joe Soma. For example, recent winner Final Score, a graduate of the 2010 Ready to Run Sale, was eventually moved to the number one stable where she gets to be involved in all the passing activity and attention. She has blossomed and is so well within herself that she seems to be improving with age. The now 6 year old mare led start to finish in her penultimate run over 2600 metres. “We enjoy sharing information with our owners and want them to feel part of their horse’s racing career and enjoy every part of the experience as a racing owner”, says Joe. “In some stables owners are not encouraged to be involved in the yard but we feel that getting to know the horse, its character and the background to its training is very important to the overall enjoyment of the ownership experience.” After all, the horse is what racing is all about! Without the horse

there would be no races, no sport, and no betting and no big race meetings.The defining factor of Horse Racing is that (unlike other competitive racing sport) you are dealing with a living, breathing being with character traits and a personality. They are ultimate athletes that require individual care and specialised attention. The open mornings at the yard give owners an opportunity to meet other owners and to interact with their horses in a relaxed environment outside of race days. It also gives potential new owners and interested guests a chance to learn more about the back-ground of a racing yard and what a regular day involves. Racing often seems shrouded in mystery to the uninitiated, so allowing new people to see the “behind the scenes” workings of a racing yard and experiencing the horses up close gives greater insight into the real side of racing. “These mornings are also an opportunity to show our appreciation to the owners who support the yard and sometimes have to be very patient while waiting for a horse to be ready or mature enough to race, or if the horse has an injury or training set-back. It is critically important that owners do understand that we are dealing with flesh and blood and not machines and, like any human athlete, injuries and training set-backs can occur. and owner understanding of this is essential to their enjoyment and expectation of their racing experience.” Another important aspect of the day is that it also gives owners the chance to meet and interact with the grooms who look after the horses’ daily needs. Each horse has a dedicated groom who gets to know the individual, feeds and waters them, cleans their stable, grooms and takes them out to the exercise track. Acknowledgment for the important role that they play in the horses’ care is thus vital. For every winner from the stable, the grooms also get to celebrate by having a yard braai which the owners contribute towards.This is in recognition of the hard work put in by the stable team to get the horses prepared and ready for a race. ALESH NAIDOO The sight of Alesh Naidoo’s Fire Racing Trust’s baby blue, red and white colours entering the winners circle is fast becoming common place on racetracks across South Africa, as he takes the racing scene by storm.

requently photographed leading in the winners with his wife Nisa, Alesh is a successful businessman and an avid athlete having completed 13 Comrades Marathons.

Thanks to his keen eye, Alesh is achieving great success with the horses he selects at sales to go onto Group winning status – amongst them the likes of Gr1 winning Love Struck, Australian filly Dylan’s Promise and the unbeaten Viva Le Var – the latter who appears to get better with each win. Viva La Var has won all four of his races, his last race shouldering the heaviest at 61kgs and winning on Greyville’s Polytrack by almost eight lengths. A humble man with a flamboyant character, Alesh Naidoo was the fitting recipient of the inaugural Roy Eckstein Floating Trophy for Gold Circle’s Racing Personality of the Year for 2012, presented at the KZN Racing Awards. “Being a punter

for a number of years and meeting other horse owners gave me a passion to be a racehorse owner. I am now in the game, doing it just for the fun and the love of it,” Alesh enthuses. Being a competitive runner, Alesh is also seen at every sale with catalogue in hand, inspecting and purchasing quality individuals which he selects. When asked if his interest in athletics influences how he chooses his horses, Alesh comments that both competitions [racing and running] “give me such an adrenalin rush, making good choices makes one stronger in the game. When I look at the sale catalogue I go by my gut feeling and faith. If I have butterflies in my stomach about a horse, I will go for it!” Alesh’s gut feeling and razor sharp instincts have certainly paid off, and his horses are continuing the momentum which shows in the recently updated National Horseracing Authority’s stats – currently The Fire Racing Trust is sitting in 10th position by stakes earned nationally.

management of his string of 65 horses in training, most prominently with trainer Charles Laird and top jockey Anton Marcus. “I go to the gallops two to three times a week. I am also very involved with the process of acceptance and declarations of my horses.”

The Kahal colt named Love Struck would go on to give Alesh his most memorable win yet and the Group 1 win every racehorse owner dreams of, snatching it from Tellina in the SA Classic.

Venturing into the breeding side of things, Rapid Flow who had raced successfully in The Fire Racing Trust’s colours, has foaled a Kahal colt at Bush Hill Stud this season. The six-time winner and Stakes-placed mare is back in foal to Curved Ball, the only son of Fastnet Rock to stand at stud in South Africa. She is a half-sister to another talented Gr1 performed horse for Alesh, Admiral’s Eye.

The richest race for three year olds in the country, it took the Summerhill-bred’s earnings to over R1,5million with five wins. Love Struck has since been exported to Mauritius where he has accumulated a further R400 000, with a further two wins in hand including the recent Duke Of York Cup, and eight places overall. Dylan’s Promise went on to become an eight-time winner and in the process became the first filly in South African racing history to win the Gr2 Oaks twice. Alesh attributes his success to remaining very involved in the
