LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

A

s the season is changing so is the role of horse enthusiasts around the globe. The show season is getting under way in South Africa while it is slowing down in the northern hemisphere. With Louisville behind us, we are already looking forward to the end of the year and the new offspring coming early next year. This edition focuses on the World’s Championship horse show held last month in Louisville. We are proud to bring all the winners of this prestigious event. Our next edition will be available in Parys South Africa early in December and will be arriving in the US in the middle of December. Our December edition will include all the spring shows in South Africa and, as usual, will focus on the rapidly approaching 2015 breeding season. We aim to include the most comprehensive list of stallions standing for public service today. As the final edition of 2014, readers around the globe look forward to seeing the finest moments of the American horsemen and women highlighted in a comprehensive “look back” at 2014. Don’t be left out of these highlights!

SOUTH AFRICAN SADDLE HORSE BREEDERS SOCIETY

2014 JUNIOR TRAINER OF THE YEAR

CHARL OOSTHUYSEN Where did you grow up? I grew up on a farm Gammib in the Southern part of Namibia. The farm is situated between Aroab and Koës. There we learnt from a young age to work with animal, sheep, goats, game, horses etc. As kids we had several abandoned animals from the farm which we raised by hand. That’s where my love for animals started. My older brother Jacques and I used to go out in the afternoon while the elders took a nap, caught a pony we had and tried to ride him. He used to buck us off all the time, but that was our idea of having fun. We lived about 200km (125 miles) from the nearest town so as kids we had to entertain ourselves and having horses on the farm helped greatly. It was indeed a privilege to grow up like that. We used the horses to round up cattle and sheep and had a lot of fun playing cowboys and Indians. How did you get in contact with Saddlebreds? My first show was Keetmanshoop where I rode the horses of Mantie Oberholzer, who later trained me in The World Cup competition. He told me all the basics and the love the Saddlebred. Many kids in Namibia went to his farm on holidays for equitation courses where he taught us everything we needed to know about horses, from recognizing illnesses to tack cleaning.

UNDULATA’S MADE IN HEAVEN 106 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

By Staff Reporter

Tell us about your World Cup experience. It was an awesome experience to visit America during the World Cup. During that trip we saw WC Boucheron work and it was a privilege for me just to be able to touch a horse like him. Where do you train horses now? I work at Tears and Roses in Paarl, Western Cape South Africa. The barn is owned by JP and Junior Hugo and we have 96 horses in training. We attend shows across South Africa, amongst others Worcester, Riversdal, Bloemfontein, Porterville, Morreesburg, Tulbagh, Robertson, Prins Albert, Parys, and Victoria West. Who is your favourite horse/s? War Sport is probably the nicest horse I’ve worked thus far, but there are many others that come close to him. I had the privilege to show Undulata’s Made in Heaven at Parys in 2013. That was the best class I’ve ever shown, it was like a dream come true. My favourite walk-trot horse is Heads Up, Park Horse is (SA) Dancing Night and Fine Harness (SA) Tango’s Daylight. Brave Heart Warrior was my all-time favourite gaited horse and probably will be for some time. What are your personal goals? My goals are to win every class at Bloemfontein and also to win all the Championships at Bloemfontein in one year.

leia Brown, the 16-year-old daughter of Beth and Dennis Brown, is a junior at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio. She has a younger brother named Colin and two dogs – a Maltese and a Pug.

Aleia has been riding American Saddlebreds since she was 5-years-old. She had wanted to ride horses as long as she could remember, and went to a local horse show that just happened to be a saddle seat show. “Most barns would not take me because I was too young. We met someone at the show who directed us to Cape Cod Farm, and I’ve been there ever since,” said Aleia. She has grown up in the show ring; starting at age seven in the

walk and trot academy division with CH Magic Deliverance. When Aleia was eight she began showing Something is in the Heir, who was only a four-year-old at the time.Their partnership lasted four years and together they took home the 9-and-10-year-old Walk and Trot Equitation World’s Championship in 2008, and closed out their walk and trot career as the 10-and-under Walk and Trot UPHA Reserve National Champions. She continued to show “Nemo” her first year cantering. Aleia began showing her current equitation horse, Madeira’s Fame, fondly known as “Thomas”, in 2012 when Aleia was in the 14-year-old equitation division. Together, they have grown over the past two years, and some of their biggest successes and most memorable moments include taking home the Senior

Aleia and Thomas winning the Senior Equitation Championship at Lexington Junior League.

Equitation Championship at Lexington Junior League in both 2013 and 2014. Another memorable accomplishment for the elegant young rider was being a part of the gold-medal winning USA Saddle Seat World Cup Team this year. “World cup was such an incredible experience. I formed bonds and memories with my team that I will always remember. It was so cool to talk to the other countries and hear their stories. Winning double gold was such an honor,” said Aleia. “When they called our names it was so incredible, the crowd went crazy. Being on the team was such a dream come true, something I have wanted since I was little.” Her success comes from the hard work that she puts in both on and off the horse; something that Aleia’s instructor Erin Richey has instilled in her from a very young age. Aleia makes the 20 minute drive from her home in Dayton, to Spring Valley where Cape Cod Equestrian Center is located, three to four times a week. Each lesson they are working on different things. “We have

124 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

lesson horses for different things we need to work on. If we need to practice figure work we will use a horse that does patterns. If we’re going to work on strength, a lunge lesson,” said Aleia.“Erin is always there to instruct me,” she added, and some of her trainer’s favorite words echo the Cape Cod philosophy, “do what feels best, and it will come naturally” and “don’t dream it be it.” Aleia adds that riding American Saddlebreds has helped her become the person she is today.“It has made me realize that time and dedication can lead to great things. I have formed so many bonds with the horses that I will cherish forever.” Her goal for the rest of this season is to continue working on pattern work and make the cuts for all three Equitation Finals. Aleia is looking forward to finishing out her junior exhibitor career and plans to attend college somewhere close so she can continue to ride and compete as an amateur. She doesn’t know what she wants to study, but thinks she might like to be a news anchor.

Clouse Stables

A FAMILY AFFAIR

I

n the heart of Central Kentucky, the town of Richmond lies just off interstate 75, within gently rolling hills, following along the Kentucky River. Surrounded by tobacco and corn, farms dot the countryside. It is there that the Clouse Family set their roots many years ago. Tommy Clouse III, now 79-years-old, was born and raised in this quaint town. His father had a barn and farm, and when he was 12-yearsold, Tommy began taking lessons. The lesson program, through Eastern Kentucky University, had a few Saddlebreds, and once Tommy saw the way the gaited horses floated across the ground, he was hooked. When he was a teenager he showed a fivegaited pony, and then at 18 he went to college, and the horses were put on hold, as with many riders. Tommy graduated from college, and then attended two years of Medical School when his father passed away. He decided to go into farming, and grew tobacco and corn to help pay for the farm and make money. He also got back into horses, and William (Bill) Rogers leased the stalls at the barn on their family’s farm. Bill trained Tommy’s horses, and then when Rogers retired, Tommy decided to take on the training duties himself.Tommy always had a special knack for the gaited horses, and long-time friend, Lanny 130 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

By Deveau Zubrod Kreitzer Greer said in an earlier Saddle Horse Report interview, “I’ve always said that Tommy could make a three-legged mule rack.” Over the years,Tommy gained friendships with many throughout the industry. In addition to training horses for Lanny Greer and his family; Jerry Mayes and his daughters, Mackenzie and Alex were also customers. Known for his deep and unmistakable voice, and big personality,Tommy along with his ‘sweet as Kentucky tea’ wife, Connie, never met a stranger. The younger of two boys, Clark Clouse was bound to follow in his father’s footsteps, though it wasn’t apparent in the beginning. “When I was little I showed in 10-and-under walk and trot and my dad had no idea about diagonals or anything, so I got dead last every single time,” said Clark laughing. “I just rode anything they could throw me on.” “Growing up as a horse trainer’s kid is hard. A lot of my friends got to show nice horses. I wasn’t able to; we couldn’t afford it. Occasionally I got to ride a customer horse. Wanting to show but having to wait my turn was the hardest part of

Clark and two-time World Champion, Colonel Hoss, ridden by Justin Cowley

it for me,” said Clark in an earlier interview. Clark’s first horse of his own was a five-gaited pony they bought when he was 16-years-old. Paired with Santana’s Miss Katy, it was his first time showing at Lexington and Louisville, and in 1995 they took home the reserve in the qualifier and championship at Lexington Junior League. “It was the greatest thing. I had been and watched so many famous trainers there over the years, and to do well was so awesome,” recalled Clark. This helped solidify for him that horses would be his future and his livelihood. After high school, Clark had no doubts that he wanted to work with horses, and he apprenticed under his dad at their family barn for about three years. After that, the Clouse’s leased a barn in Verona, Kentucky and for a year they ran two training barns; Clark with 22 horses in Verona, and Tommy back home in Richmond with a string of his own. Clark recalls this time in his career as a true learning curve. At just 21 years old he was hardworking, young, and fearless; and his talent was beginning to shine through, although the polishing was still in progress. “I learned a lot. I had Glider’s Star then and sold her to Matt Shiflet. I had a mare named Dream’s Desire that I won with at Lexington 131 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

and sold to Lonnie Lavery, and I had another horse named Just a Tad Bad that Jim Cherry bought from me.”While the experience was unforgettable, Clark soon realized he needed to be back home in Richmond. Clark gained additional know-how and some of the polishing necessary to make it as a top trainer, after he moved back home. For a short time, he would go after lunch and work for Melissa Moore in the afternoons, helping work colts for her. “I learned a lot from her as far as training and taking care of the horses, and what went into running a major operation,” said Clark. “My parents were great,” Clark continued. “Working for Dad was hard; I knew I could quit as often as I wanted to and still come back. Sometimes if your family is in [the horse business,] they expect a little too much. It would have been good to work for someone else, but I couldn’t as they needed me to stay home and help take care of the family business. It got to where I was my own boss at home with my father to help me. I got to show more often, to get more exposure.” In 2005, Clark ran into Sheila Seils at the All American Classic

Clark and Sparky

2007 UPHA Young Trainer of the Year

Horse Show. Sheila grew up in Mazon, Illinois, a small town south of Chicago, and was surrounded by horses from an early age. Her mom rode Quarter horses and her dad had Shetland, Hackney and Welsh ponies. She started riding at the age of four and competed with the Quarter horses. She also did some driving on her family’s farm, and became more involved with the ponies when she was around 18. Sheila and her first husband, Scott Seils, worked ponies of their own and some Hackney’s for Dan and Leah Light, and so she was occasionally at shows that had cross-over into Saddlebreds.

Mini farrier, Carter trimming Daisy

Tommy continued to work five or six horses at the barn in Richmond after they moved.“But he was getting older and knew that it was time to retire,” said Clark. “He sold his farm about six months after we moved and started coming to the barn every Saturday to watch me work horses.”

As the Clouse family has grown over the years, Clark has grown in many ways as well. His training has evolved from almost exclusively young horses and prospects to more amateurs and junior exhibitors. “I used to be the guy that got all of the crazy horses,” said Clouse. “I still enjoy projects, and get along well with Clark and Sheila quickly hit it off. A middle school social studies horses that maybe didn’t’ get a great start. I get a lot of people and math teacher, Sheila often found herself commuting to that send me those as investments, but now I have young riders Kentucky on the weekends to see Clark. In February of 2006, too, age 11 all the way to 75.” they were married in the Grand Cayman’s surrounded by some of their closest friends. She continued to teach in Chicago the Clark and Sheila have also become like family to many of their rest of that school year before moving to Kentucky permanently young riders over the years; from Justin Cowley, to Drew Taylor to be with Clark. In 2007, Sheila was pregnant with their son, Hewitt and Jozee Johnson. “To see [Jozee] evolve as a rider has Carter and after much discussion; they decided to venture out been great. Seeing her win at Louisville this year (aboard the on their own. They purchased Melissa Moore’s Sunrise Stables Harold Denton-owned, black gelding, Manipulating The Stars) property in Versailles, Kentucky and moved into the 41-stall barn was like seeing my own kid win, I was so happy for her,” recalled Clark. Long-time rider, Drew Taylor Hewitt also gave Clark a first right after Lexington Junior League that year. 132 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

on the green shavings this year, as she was the first rider of his to capture a World’s Champion of Champions title. She won on her recently sold horse, Fort Chiswell’s Prince Charming in both the qualifier and 23-entry championship of the Adult Show Pleasure division. This year’s Louisville was probably the most successful ever for the Clouse Stables contingent. In addition to World’s Championship titles from Manipulating The Stars and Fort Chiswell’s Prince Charming; Shine Forever won the Amateur Gentleman’s Fine Harness class with Kenny Wheeler catch-driving for owners, Pam and Bruce Milligan. Over the years, Clark has developed many outstanding show horses, many of which were young and untried, but others that were older, and even discarded or passed over by other trainers. One of which was Colonel Hoss, who was already nineyears-old, and in his first year showing, when Tommy found him showing at the Ohio State Fair in 1995. Always with a great eye for a horse, Clark still relies on his dad for discovering many of their prospects.

While Tommy was the one who discovered Colonel Hoss, it was Sheila who was responsible for the pairing of him with Justin Cowley, telling Clark in 2006 that Justin should ride Hoss. Clark was doubtful, but listened to Sheila’s advice. Their first show together they were dead last, after making some major mistakes, but the crowd noticed the potential of the dynamic duo. Justin watched the video from the show over and over and the next time they hit the entry gate, at the American Royal, it was purely electrifying. They took home the National Championship title, and the following year Justin and Hoss were crowned World’s Champions in the Junior Exhibitor Five Gaited division. Harold Denton, who has owned and shown Colonel Hoss in the most recent years, recently retired the grand gelding; who is now 18-years-old and living out his days at Clouse Stables. Another horse that left a big impression on Clark, and was also one of his biggest challenges was CH Memories’ Paragon. Ceil and Kenny Wheeler owned him and he had won at Louisville under the direction of Virgil Helm as a Junior horse. “I had watched him and loved that horse, I had watched him work with Nelson Green multiple times, and thought that I could really work with him,” said Clark. After Clark and Nelson spoke about the horse,

the Wheeler’s gave Clark a chance, and sent him to his farm. “He was very smart, but he had to trust you. I did everything for him, I bonded with him. That’s the only horse I ever sold that I was sad about. We won at Kansas City and beat Courageous Lord and Bravo Blue and I felt more satisfaction for that horse and probably Colonel Hoss than any other horses.”

there is no sugar coating anything. She’ll tell it like it is.”

The Clouse Stables program has expanded in numbers over the years as well, with over 36 horses in training currently. While the days are long, Clark makes sure to spend time with his family as well. “Carter is in school now, so I take him to school in the morning.” He often works straight through lunch and gets done That was in 2007, and this was also the year that Clark was the with the horses around three, in time to spend time with his recipient of the UPHA Tony Ray Young Trainer of the Year award, family in the evenings. Clark still enjoys the young horses as well, something he was very humbled to receive at only 28-years-old. and loves to see the improvement of the babies over the winter. He is assisted by Salvador Guido who has been with Clouse Owner Harold Denton is just one of the Clouse Stables Stables for about a year. Guido helps manage the farm, and the customers, and over the years Clark has developed a trust with other four employees. He also helps with some of the colts, the clients, both with young investments and the tried-and-true longeing and longe-lining, while Clark still likes to break them to show ring stars. “Harold Denton has nine horses here, the past ride. five horses I bought for him he hasn’t even seen before-hand,” said Clark, demonstrating how over the years he has proven Clark really enjoys judging as well, and as one of the younger rated himself at finding a good investment. “It depends on what I’m R judges (in Saddlebreds, Hackneys, roadsters and Equitation), he buying the horse for. people a chance. I have a large R but I’m younger, and I think they should have a young person on every three-judge panel. It gives us a feeling of having a chance, to at least get looked at. James Nichols gave me the best advice,” said Clark. “Don’t complain about judging unless you go and do it yourself.” While Clark handles the training duties, Sheila takes care of much of the business aspect of the farm. She does the billing and bookwork, the advertising, and handles much of the customer relations as well. Clark and Sheila’s son Carter is now seven-years-old and in second grade. Sheila is taking a break from teaching now too, so she can be more involved with Carter’s school. While his interest in the horses is growing, he has a miniature named Daisy he also drives. “He really likes to shoe though,” laughed Clark. “He has a shoeing box, he’s always been obsessed with it, and he will get the rasp and trim her feet. He was getting ready to put a nail in there and put a shoe on her.”

Scott Seils continues to train Sheila’s ponies in Illinois. She currently own four Shetlands and/or American Show Ponies (ponies 48” tall). “All of my ponies won World Championship titles this year in their respective divisions,” said Sheila proudly. The Shetland World Championships are held at the Ohio State Fair. “I am also very fortunate to be able to catch drive several ponies (Hackney, Shetland, and American Show Ponies) for Scott, including Mastercraft’s Forecaster to a World Championship title in Louisville two years ago. That year, I was also able to catch drive a pony for Dan Light, Regal’s Pauline LF, at Louisville and earned another World’s Championship title.”

While often the Saddlebreds and the ponies are competing at different shows throughout the country, a few times a year their paths intercept and they are able to all show under the same roof. “I love to go to shows like the Ohio State Fair or the Illinois State Fair because we are all together there,” said Sheila. “Carter told me that the Ohio State Fair is his favorite horse show. I asked him why, and he said because ‘he gets to Although Sheila doesn’t ride anymore, she says she has take his miniature pony there, daddy gets to take the horses, thought about getting Carter and herself a Quarter horse mommy gets to take her ponies, papa (my dad) gets to take to ride. HISTORY IN THE MAKING

onies are not considered a job, a hobby or a pastime when it comes to this unique individual. Training ponies is a passion he has had from the very first time he ever laid his eyes or hands on one. “Watching him work with an animal is similar to an artist creating a masterpiece from a blank canvas, or a sculptor taking the raw materials and forming it into something mesmerizing. He always allows the horse or pony to tell him what they are going to be, he never forces one to be something they are not,” explains wife Diane. The unique individual described is world-renowned hackney pony trainer, Larry Ella.

By Shannon Ella

Morgan Farm in Woodbridge, Ontario owned by George and Mildred Lewis. The Lewis’ and Ella dove deeply into the Hackney industry with the purchase of Mark of Success in 1987. The famed jet-black stallion with four high white socks stayed under the direction of Skip Shenker to win the 1987 World’s Champion Junior Harness Pony and finish out the show season. In 1988, Ella took over the lines and started on his journey with the pony.

Larry campaigned Mark of Success at several shows across North America, winning some highly competitive classes, until the pony caught the eye of the late Sallie B. Wheeler. She Larry’s passion started early on, showing at the age of nine and purchased the champion and placed him under the direction beginning his training career while still in school. it’s time for the pony to debut. This was a week before Shawn and I were in Toronto for our wedding. Two days after we were at Larry’s barn purchasing Par Excellence and the rest is history. There have been many World and Canadian Championships, which are only a small piece of what makes this relationship so special. The combination of the Mark of Excellence ponies we have bought over the years and the wonderful mares that we had at Bent Tree, many by our great Vindicator, have allowed us to carefully balance the show ponies that Larry is training for us today. The greatest success there being our four time World Grand Champion, Giselle. All Larry has to do is pick up the phone and tell me there is a Mark of Excellence pony we need to partner on and we are off on a new adventure. We also believe in the importance of developing all of our hackneys for the long term. These crosses last and he allows me to have an entire life long career with the ponies he develops.” 2014 has proven to be quite a year for Ella. On Wednesday night at the Kentucky State Fair, he was inducted into the American Hackney Horse Society Hall of Fame. He explained,“I was honored to be put in at all, but alongside one of the greats...” Mrs. Sallie B. Wheeler was also an inductee that same evening. Saturday night at the fair proved to be even more exciting. He piloted WGC Giselle to her fourth consecutive World’s Grand 148 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

Stress on the very. That’s the main ingredient! Most times when I work her, I wonder to myself if I even have her where she’s completely ‘broke’. A lot of people think she is just that fiery at a show…but it’s like that every day with her. It doesn’t matter where she is, she’s all show horse.” This was Giselle’s eighth time showing in Freedom Hall and her eighth victory pass on the green shavings. The Saturday night victory marked the 20th anniversary of Ella’s win with Mark of Excellence in the Hackney Pony World’s Grand Championship. Mark of Excellence was, sadly, lost to the show horse world earlier this year. His presence was maintained in Freedom Hall, however, by a somewhat superstitious Larry Ella. A bracelet of Mark’s mane hair made the victory pass with them. It was obviously a good luck charm that evening as number 800 was called and Giselle pranced to the winner’s circle for the unanimous victory. Ella stresses how he continues to learn new things every day. He is a humble man, who cares more for the well-being of an animal than the color of the ribbon. His patience, perseverance and attention to detail have allowed him to bring Ella Stables to its many successes.

Evening, has been a fresh face for the juvenile division this season. CH I’m Something Wicked wore the roses at Louisville for the first time in his illustrious career, as the pair took home the Junior Exhibitor Five-Gaited Show Pleasure tri-color. McGee also took home back-to-back blues, as she won Division I of the qualifier on her beloved CH Sunken Treasure, and then Division II with Wicked. In addition, McGee and her park horse, CH Let’s Talk, also took home two top three finishes in the competitive Junior Exhibitor Division at the World Championships.

McGee hails from Greenville, South Carolina, and is the 17-year-old daughter of Julie and Allen Bosworth. She is a senior at Christ Church Episcopal School and has aspirations of someday working in Public Relations or Communications, much like her father, who works at a leading marketing firm and also has recently been working with the ASHA on rebranding and marketing the Saddlebred, as committee chair of the ASHA Marketing Committee.

McGee has also made the transition into the equitation division as the Captain of this year’s gold-medal winning USA Saddle Seat World Cup 5-Gaited Team. Her first experience with equitation was as a member of the winning Young McGee’s first introduction to horses was a pony ride at a Riders Team last year, although it certainly comes naturally friend’s birthday, and she started taking lessons when she to this gifted rider. “It had been my dream ever since I was was in kindergarten. 2014 World Cup Teams take double Gold medals

Lexington 2014 - McGee with CH Let’s Talk in the line up

SOME OF MCGEE’S FAVORITE (AND NOT-SO-FAVORITE) THINGS: Favorite food? My favorite food is by far penne pasta with Alfredo sauce. Favorite music, singer or band? I’m not quite sure who my favorite singer, music or band is; but, when I listen to Pandora, I always listen to the John Mayer station. Favorite movie? My favorite movie is The Wedding Date, with Debra Messing, or The Other Woman, with Cameron Diaz. What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? I don’t think I could live without books. I absolutely love a good book. If I find a really good book that I can get into, I could sit and read for hours. What’s one thing you wish you didn’t exist? I wish sushi did not exist. I cannot stand the taste of sushi or fish. It makes me feel like I am licking the ocean floor. Nicknames? Mary calls me Geezer or Geeze. My family will call me Kit Kat or Kitty. What’s something no one knows about you? I am like a little puppy when bad weather comes around. If I think there is a tornado warning or anything, I will go sit in my basement by myself. I am terrified of bad weather. It doesn’t even have to be severe weather. It can be thunder and I am out of here. Anything else you would like to say? I just want to say thank you to my barn family, my real family, my friends and my trainers, Mary and Evan, for continuously supporting me and being by my side. It’s been an amazing road through my Junior Exhibitor career and I could not have done it without all of them.

Lexington 2014 - McGee and Wicked

In addition to winning the gold medal, there have been many great memories for McGee over the years, but one of her most memorable riding moments so far was when she won the Junior Exhibitor Park National Championship at the American Royal last year with CH Let’s Talk. “After a two-horse work out, I was over-the-moon to be called the unanimous winner,” she exclaimed. Part of the reason this memory ranks at the top of her long list of accolades, stems from CH Let’s Talk also being one of the most challenging horses for McGee to figure out. “He is one of the smartest and most particular horses you will ever meet. My trainer, Mary, and I always have to keep things interesting for him because once he figures them out, he’s not interested anymore. It’s just a constant puzzle of what to do and where to go. But, he is also one of the most rewarding horses I have ever owned, because when you are doing it right, he definitely lets you know.”

that, “I hope I will always be showing horses no matter what school I go to, or what career choices I might make.

McGee is enjoying her final year in the Junior Exhibitor division and hopes to always have horses in her life. She is focusing on applying to colleges right now as well, but adds

McGee is looking forward to every step, and every ride, in her final shows as a junior exhibitor this year.

169 THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW HORSE Third Edition

Horses are a huge part of my life.” She also has a dream and goal of someday having the chance to try and win every gaited stake at Louisville (Ladies Gaited, Amateur Ladies Gaited, Amateur Gaited and The Gaited Stake). American Saddlebreds have shaped McGee’s life in many ways over the years and has taught her about how to live every moment to the fullest, appreciate all of the opportunities, and ride every step she’s given. She, and trainer Mary, have a thing for quotes, and continuously send pictures of quotes back and forth to each other. “Something Mary says to me all the time is: ‘Ride every step. Own every step. Ride the ride you need to have and the rest will work itself out’,” said McGee.
