LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
W
elcome to another special edition of The International Racehorse Magazine. The opportunities equestrian sport offers to the enthusiast is truly amazing. Having travelled far and wide during 2014 I’m constantly amazed at the common thread that runs through the equestrian fraternity, regardless of geographic location, breed or discipline, it’s passion. Passion for life, passion for living and passion for these fantastic equestrian athletes that we choose to share our lives with. Whether it is racing, show jumping, endurance riding or just hacking out, never a dull person will you meet attending equestrian events around the globe. I am encouraged by more and more people showing a genuine interest in other disciplines and the willingness to learn from each. In this issue we take a look at the upcoming CTS Ready to Run Sale, cover and cover story. It is awards season and the article on the Equus Awards on page 48 highlights the top horses and connections in South Africa during the past season. Bunny Hinzman covers the recent Saratoga Race Meets and highlights some of the top races from the previous months on page 66. Liesl King takes us behind the scenes at Ascot on page 50. This highlight in world racing is a must visit for any racing fan, no matter where you call home. Liesl also looks at South Africa’s biggest race, The Vodacom Durban July, on page 16. 2014 was a real nail biter as the final result went upstairs to the marshalls with an objection being logged in the main race. A thoroughly enjoyable day spent in Durban. Nicola Hayward takes us through to the Investec Derby on page 30. The Derby Stakes, popularly known as The Derby, internationally as the Epsom Derby, is a Group 1 race in England open to three year old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs in Surrey over a distance of one mile and is scheduled for early June each year. It is Britain’s richest horse race, and the most prestigious of the country’s five Classics. Stallion days, Chantilly, the next instalment of our series on Bluegrass Stud and more. I always like to remind you that we would like to hear from you, so join our more than 76 000 online fans on Facebook or mail us as info@international-racehorse.com. See you again in December. Happy racing.

INNOVATIVE THINKING AT ITS BEST Text & Photos by Liesl King and Lanzerac

the arena of Thoroughbred Bloodstock Sales less than four years ago and immediately set about to a bring fresh, innovative approach to the centuries old practice of selling thoroughbred racehorses.
Hence, it was exceedingly refreshing to come across two companies that have embraced the concept that change, coupled with out of the box thinking, is the way forward. Cape Thoroughbred Sales or CTS as they are mostly known, entered
Right from the start, their unusual concept of an inner city sale was a worldwide first. Held in the Cape Town Convention Centre, the Cape Premier Yearling Sale is now well established and going from strength to strength. So much so that recently, it was very successfully copied by the English, when Goffs in conjunction with QIPCO held a very high profile, invitation only, mixed thoroughbred Sale in none other than The Orangery at London’s Kensington Palace. Can’t get more inner city than that. Last year saw CTS again forging ahead into unchartered waters, first with the announcement of The Lanzerac Hotel & Spa as the new partner of the CTS ReadyTo Run Sale and the new ReadyTo
t has been done this way for fifty years, why change?” Why fix something that isn’t broken?” “We have always done it this way.” Words heard in the racing industry, where change is often regarded as something dangerous, something that challenges the status quo, something to be avoided at all cost. Yet the world constantly changes, our lives change and firmly clinging to how things were done in the past, is a very dangerous practice. Yes, it may have been done in a certain way in the past. That does not mean that way is wrong, but when you repeat the same thing over and over it loses its impact, its freshness.

Run Stakes. Followed in quick succession by the announcement of Africa’s richest race, the CTS Million Dollar for graduates of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale, as well as the March Yearling Sale. Ready To Run Sales have often been seen as the last chance for breeders to sell yearlings that just couldn’t or wouldn’t cut it at the preceding sales. CTS turned that concept completely on its head and the 2013 Ready To Run Sale presented by Lanzerac was a huge success, with 195 quality horses going through the ring for an aggregate of R37 195 000. The Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes presented by CTS was another unmitigated success, with the talented Captain America, turning the tables on hot favourite Red Ray to take line honours. It may have seemed unusual for a historic hotel to dip its toes into the waters of thoroughbred sales, but it was a match made in heaven. While the Lanzerac dates from the time of Simon
van der Stel, its management firmly share CTS’ belief that change, innovation and progress are essential in today’s fast changing world. Last year there were great plans in the pipeline for the Hotel and Spa, but plans are one thing, actually making it happen is quite another. Hence, I ventured forth to the picturesque town of Stellenbosch to see what changes if any have occurred in the last twelve months. I was pleasantly surprised. The Lanzerac may be a 300 year old farm, but it is certainly not stuck in a past of faded chintz and genteel glory. Since my last visit a sophisticated cigar bar,The Esquire opened at the Lanzerac. Here whiskey and spirit aficionados can enjoy their favourite tipple in comfortable yet classy surroundings. While the new Deli lures visitors in with tantalising aromas of piping hot coffee and freshly baked bread. Its shelves stacked with a variety of teas, jams, preserves and all kinds of homemade goodies, while October 2014 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

an abundance of locally sourced cheeses and cold meats fill the fridges. And should you suddenly be overcome with hunger, the deli is actually part shop part bistro with scrumptious sandwiches, light meals and a variety of beverages on offer. That should be enough to keep anybody quite busy, but at the Lanzerac, the team always has one eye on the future. Despite the dampness of the day, an army of workers are busy putting the finishing touches to the Lanzerac’s latest project, the Cellar Venue. Where you might ask? Well on top of the underground cellar of course! A sophisticated venue with soundproofing and moveable partitioning, it is designed to accommodate weddings, functions, conventions and even the odd show. Future plans include a smaller conference centre consisting of a number of beautifully appointed boardrooms, an increase in room numbers, to cope with the ever increasing visitor numbers, as well as an upgrade to the Spa and that’s just for starters. Never content to rest on their laurels either, CTS has also been ringing the changes. Recently the CTS team came up with the clever concept of combining the Ready To Run Sale into a Festival of Racing. In collaboration with Kuda Insurance and Kenilworth 12
INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE October 2014
Racing, the CTS Ready To Run Sale presented by Lanzerac will now form part of a four day Festival at Durbanville Racecourse from the 2nd to the 5th of October, incorporating the Kuda Matchem Stakes Race Day. And to top it all the Lanzerac has stepped forward to become the new sponsor of the Diana Stakes, run on the same day. The Festival will commence with the traditional Breeze Ups on Thursday, the 2nd of October, followed by a Viewing Day on the Friday. Saturday sees the running of the Group 3 Kuda Matchem Stakes over and the fillies’ equivalent, the Group 3 Lanzerac Diana Stakes. The opening session of the CTS Ready To Run Sale presented by Lanzerac will commence on the Saturday evening straight after racing, with the rest of the Sale taking place on the Sunday. The R2 million 2014 Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes presented by CTS for three-year-olds will remain on the 22nd of November. The Lanzerac and CTS have clearly embraced the concept that change combined with innovative thinking are essential for progress, even if it leads one into unchartered waters and I for one, can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the future.

VODACOM DURBAN JULY 2014
SO CLOSE AND
YET SO FAR Not only will Vodacom Durban July day go down as the day where the winner in South Africa’s premier race wasn’t the winner, but for most it was a day of ups and downs and surprises aplenty.
F
irst up was the Gr.1 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper, where Mary Slack and Michael Javett’s two-year-old Rock Of Gibraltar filly, Alboran Sea(AUS), was the hot favourite. Trained by Mike de Kock she was unbeaten after winning the Gr.1 Allan Robertson( 1200m) by 2.25 lengths in only her second start. Yet two-year-old racing can often produce upset results, especially at the Vodacom Durban July. It is a huge ask of any baby to circle the packed parade ring and then canter down the straight greeted by tent town, 50 000 people, a sea of umbrellas and the fashion contest in full swing. Yet none of this seemed to bother Alboran Sea. She calmly strolled around the parade ring as if she didn’t have a care in the world. She was a model citizen as she cantered down to the start, behaving far better than some of her elders later in the day. In fact, she was so calm that she simply forgot to jump. As the gates flew open, Alboran Sea dawdled, losing two lengths, before suddenly remembering she was meant to jump and run. Muzi Yeni quickly had her at the tail of the field and in the home straight the filly mounted a valiant effort to catch the flying Bilateral(Lateral) but those two lengths at the start cost her dearly as she went down by a quarter length to Bilateral.

FASHION Next up was the colts’ equivalent, the Gr.1 Durban Golden Horseshoe( 1200m), where much was expected of Mike De Kock’s Anjaal(AUS), owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the beautifully bred Afrikaburn, trained by Dean Kannemeyer, owned by globetrotting owner Fred Crabbia. Both had chances, but in the end, it was the flying Afrikaburn in those familiar black silks with a red Maltese cross, who crossed the line in first. Then it was Vodacom Durban July time. The hype and excitement had been building all day and even President Jacob Zuma was in attendance, greeting each jockey personally as they were introduced to the crowd. The marching band looked splendid as they paraded down the home straight, before playing the National Anthem and the crowd had dressed for the occasion, with outfits that were part fantasy, part fiction and part fashion. In the weeks leading up to the July favouritism for the big race had bounced back and forth between two star three-yearolds, Legislate (Dynasty), trained by Justin Snaith and Louis The King(Black Minnaloushe), trained by Geoff Woodruff. Legislate had impressed with victories in the Gr.1 Cape Investec Derby and the Gr.1 Daily News 2000, while Louis The King had

become the first horse after the mighty Horse Chestnut to win the Triple Crown. On the female front, In The Fast Lane, another three-year-old from the Snaith stable, was also highly regarded after her dominant victory in the Gr.1 Woolavington (2000m). Wylie Hall(AUS) a son of Redoute’s Choice, had been largely overlooked, as the colt seemed to have lost his way since his victory in the Gr. 1 SA Derby in 2013 and hence the Weiho Marwing trained colt started at generous odds of 33/1. With no pace on M J Byleveld took Wylie Hall to the front early on, where Legislate joined him. Down the back straight they swopped places several times in the slow run race. Yet soon after swinging for home, it was race on as Richard Fourie on Legislate sent his colt for the line and victory. An epic battle ensued as neither horse nor jockey was prepared to give up the chance of winning South Africa’s premier race. On the line, Wylie Hall’s nose was in front, but the final 300 meters had not been pretty and the field had barely headed for the paddock when an objection was announced. Instead of the victory lap, the stand-in-the-stirrups celebrations as the crowd of 50 000 scream their approval, Wylie Hall was sent back to paddock to await the outcome, while the runner-
up’s furious jockey headed for the boardroom. One never wants to lose a race in the boardroom and one definitely does not want to lose the biggest race of the year in the boardroom. As the slow motion replay came up on the big screen it was perfectly clear that Legislate and Wylie Hall had bumped each other in the desperate battle for the line. Legislate had come off worst from that encounter and was carried out slightly by Wylie Hall, yet the two finished with noses touching. Would Legislate have won without the interference? We will never know. Down on the hallowed turf waited South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma, ready to hand out the silver salvers, bottles of bubbly and roses to the winning connections, except there weren’t any. No trainer had come bounding down the steps taking them three at a time. No jockey had tried to imitate Frankie Dettori by leaping exuberantly off his trusty steed’s back in the winner’s circle to the roar of the crowd. Instead, we had silence. Silence as the President waited, the dignitaries waited, the media waited and the crowd waited. When the announcement finally came, it was almost an anticlimax. The objection had been upheld. Legislate had won the Vodacom Durban July.Yet one was left with the overwhelming feeling that while we now had an official winner, it just wasn’t the same.

Afrikaburn Golden Horseshoe
The last Gr.1 race on the card was the Garden Province Stakes where the tiny six-year-old mare Beach Beauty(Dynasty) was defending her crown in her swan song race. With four Gr.1’s and 6 Gr.2’s behind her name, the gutsy mare with a heart of a lion was a popular crowd favourite. The mare reached the lead easily and it seemed as if it was race over. Then out of the chasing pack, charged her old enemy Hammie’s Hooker(Trippi). The younger mare was catching Beach Beauty with every stride and an upset looked inevitable. Beach Beauty however, was having none of that. She flattened her ears, lowered herself and suddenly Hammie’s Hooker was no longer gaining, seemingly firmly anchored to Beach Beauty’s quarters. Jockey Sean Cormack started celebrating a long way before the line, gaining himself a hefty fine, but he simply didn’t care. He was going to make the most of this oh so special victory. Beach Beauty crossed the line three quarters of a length in front, with Cormack still celebrating.Vodacom Durban July Day 2014 will go down in the history as the race where the winner wasn’t the winner and another took his place, but as with all things in life, things are never upside down for long. All it took was a gutsy mare and a glorious victory, to put the world right again.

Pomodoro THE STUFF LEGENDS ARE MADE OF
P
omo d’oro in Italian or pomme d’or in French. In either language, it means golden apple, a divine food and source of immortality that regularly cropped up in myths and legends throughout the ages. And Pomodoro, the magnificent, imposing son of Jet Master and racehorse extraordinaire, is certainly the stuff that legends are made of. Trained by Sean Tarry, Pomodoro shed his maiden status in only his second start, when romping home by an impressive 3.25 lengths over 1600m at Clairwood Park. Next up, he won the Listed KZN Guineas Trial(1600m) by another solid margin, announcing, in no uncertain terms, that he was a serious racehorse in the making. Six months later, Pomodoro famously dead-heated with Royal Bencher in the R1.5 million Gr.1 SA Derby (2450m) at Turffontein, but his most memorable victory was his brilliantly executed defeat of Smanjemanje in the R3 million, 2012 Vodacom Durban July. A multiple champion jockey, Piere Strydom can time a finish like no other and despite a wide draw he managed to persuade Pomodoro to fight off Smanjemanje’s relentless onslaught and keep his nose in front all the way to the line. Strydom, with the tears flowing, paid a heartfelt tribute to Pomodoro. “This is unbelievable and I am very emotional. I was a little bit wide early on, but when I asked him at the top of the straight, he gave it to me straightaway and he just kept on giving, right to the line.” At four Pomodoro got even better, demonstrating his incredible turn of foot and versatility, as he destroyed a high class field of sprinters, by storming to an easy victory in very soft conditions over 1160m at Turffontein. Soon the stallion barns at Klawervlei Stud beckoned and Pomodoro retired earlier this year with nine victories, over distances ranging from 1160m to 2450m, behind his name. His extraordinary talent and versatility made him a very desirable stallion and most of the shares on offer were quickly snapped up. Recently, Pomodoro was the star of the show, when making 28

Pomodoro his debut at the Klawervlei Stud Stallion Day. As he made his eagerly awaited entrance with ears pricked, looking every inch the stallion, there were many gasps of admiration. Tarry, seeing his erstwhile charge for the first time since his departure from Randjiesfontein, could not help but marvel at the way Pomodoro looked. “He was the most athletic colt I have ever trained and I think he will make a great stallion, he looks absolutely magnificent!” It may have been Pomodoro’s first parade between the unfamiliar umbrellas, tables and clicking cameras, but he handled it like a pro, his calm demeanour and good temperament clearly on display. He has certainly let down into a very impressive stallion and with his proven athletic ability, versatility and outstanding temperament, his offspring are sure to become the stuff of legends too.

BRINGING BACK
THE RUSH
And they’re off - South African horseracing repositions itself
T
hink elegance, fun, fashion, food, music and entertainment. That’s exactly what guests were treated to at the launch of Racing. It’s a Rush on 12 August at Bullion in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, a new venue which provided the perfect backdrop for the launch of the sophisticated and clearly thought out lifestyle brand. For the first time in the history of South African horseracing, a single unified brand will now represent the sport. Racing. It’s a Rush is bringing horseracing back to the forefront of the lifestyle entertainment industry in South Africa. “Part of the beauty of horseracing is the multitude of different interests and parties involved. In order to re-establish ourselves as an enduring and sustainable brand, all of the major players have joined together to launch a campaign aimed at elevating this incredible sport, promoting its core values and messages to all South Africans in our aim to redefine racing as the destination of business, sport, lifestyle and entertainment,” says Michael Varney, spokesperson for Racing. It’s a Rush. “We want to discover, engage and attract a loyal following of new fans, sponsors and media to our sport, while recognising and reinstilling confidence and excitement in our existing fan base,” he says. 30

The MC for the“black and gold” themed night was charismatic media personality and ‘fashionista’, Maps Maponyane and on trend with the evening’s big announcement was the ever elegant and formidably talented Unathi Msengana, who kept the select guest list of celebrities and media captivated. A host of striking models dressed in JJ Schoeman’s latest range of evening gowns showcased the picture-perfect link between fashion and horseracing. The move to reposition the brand of horseracing in South Africa comes after much research into how the sport is perceived by many. One of the greatest misconceptions is that it’s a sport only for the wealthy, a sport that is only about betting. “Racing is not just about gaming, a day at the races is part of a tangible lifestyle. The sport has a valuable heritage in South Africa but we want to appeal to a new generation of fans. We want to make sure that the race day experience keeps these fans coming back. Racing. It’s a Rush is a brand that is relevant, fresh, locally inspired and exciting. Ultimately we want to bring back the glamour, the excitement, the thrill and the rush of horseracing in South Africa,” Varney says.

The new generation of fans will want to be informed, entertained and interacted with. And what better way to do this than through an interactive social and digital media campaign, which is exactly what Racing. It’s a Rush will be doing going forward. The launch of this new lifestyle entertainment brand attracted many of South Africa’s prominent faces who assured that they would soon be glamming up for a day at the races, including Kojo Baffoe, Louise Carver, Gert-Johan Coetzee,Tamerin Jardine as well as a host of media. A special guest at the launch was S’manga Khumalo – a jockey who, at only 29 years of age, has achieved the second of his two ultimate career goals. The first was his historic win at last year’s Vodacom Durban July, South Africa’s richest race. The second took place on the 13 August at the prestigious Equus Awards when he was announced as the Champion Jockey for the 2013 / 2014 national season. Khumalo is the first black jockey to walk away with this title, a title which was cemented by his impressive 185 wins this season, leading by 42 wins over his nearest competitor, Richard Fourie (143 wins). Khumalo ends this season with a remarkable 1 381 races.
Known affectionately as ‘Bling’ within racing circles, a 15 year old Khumalo was spotted by a talent scout who visited his school in Kwa Mashu in Durban. In 2000 Khumalo joined the Durban Jockey Academy in Summerveld where he started a five year apprenticeship. And the rest, as they say, is history. Khumalo has been racing professionally since 2006. S’manga’s next goal is to win the J&B Met at Kennilworth in Cape Town next year. Having won the Sansui Summer Cup in 2012 and the Vodacom Durban July in 2013, the J&B Met is the next big race he has his heart set on. The sport of horse racing is the second highest attended sport in the UK, with age demographics across the board. There is no reason why this cannot be replicated in South Africa. Racing lends itself to music, fashion, family, networking and fun. While Racing will always be the hero, it’s the additional opportunities which make the sport of horseracing a formidable entertainment option. Racing – It really is a rush! “ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR”
By Nicola Hayward
There is an old adage in breeding that says when you put the best to the best then you get the best. Of course that’s true as often as it’s a lie and 2014 provides two excellent examples
K
entucky Derby winner California Chrome is the product of the union of two ordinary thoroughbreds. He was a blue collar racehorse like thousands of others born around the globe every year. And yet, despite his seemingly humble genetics he gave his connections a roller coaster ride to the very cusp of an elusive Triple Crown. On the day that he was thwarted at Belmont Park, the racing world had welcomed an Epsom Derby winner home who was the complete antithesis of the big American horse. A colt bred to win The Derby, a horse with a regal pedigree, a three year old called Australia.

INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE October 2014
Bred by Lord Derby at Stanley House Stud in Newmarket, Australia is by Galileo and out of the globe-trotting mare Ouija Board. In 2001 it was Galileo who not only gave Aiden O’Brien his maiden win in The Derby but was also the first son of Sadler’s Wells to be victorious at the Epsom classic. He beat 2000 Guineas hero Golan by almost four lengths. Later he went on to win the Irish Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. He was second in the Irish Champion Stakes before failing on the dirt at The Breeders’ Cup Classic and was retired to Coolmore in Ireland. At stud he has proved to be the best of the many sons of Sadler’s Wells that stand at stud around

the world. He was leading sire in England and Ireland in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 and has produced a plethora of outstanding horses including Frankel (undefeated in 14 starts), Derby winners New Approach and Ruler of The World, Durban July heroine Igugu and of course Australia. Ouija Board raced in the famous black silks of Edward Stanley the 19th Earl of Derby, her breeder. By Cape Cross she is out of the Welsh Pageant mare Selection Board who goes back to the blind mare Samanda. In her book Classic Lives, Caroline Silver wrote of Samanda: “the mare suffered from claustrophobia, their loosebox door was never shut…Out in the paddock in the warm south-west wind, (her foal) wobbled along with his dam keeping close to the tinkling of his bell…”. This is an old Stanley House family, one nurtured, developed and enriched and a family that eventually produced Ouija Board the dark bay mare who won 10 of 22 starts, 7 at Group 1 level. She raced in England, Ireland, Hong Kong, Japan and America. It is hard to say which was her most impressive win: perhaps the 6 length romp in the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom as a 3YO, the photo-finish with Alexander Goldrun in the Nassau Stakes or her second of two wins in the Breeders’ Cup Fillies and Mare Turf. No matter which, Ouija Board retired to stud as European Horse of the Year in 2004 and 2006 and earnings of just more than $6.3 Million. She was tough, sound and had more air-miles under her belt than many a fan.
34
INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE October 2014
Her first foal was a 2008 colt by Kingmambo calledVoodoo Prince. He was sold to Australian connections late in 2013 and renamed Our Voodoo Prince. On Easter Saturday this year he won the G3 Easter Cup over 2000m at Caulfield. Monsun sired her next foal, another colt called Aegaeus who won two minor races from 15 starts. In 2010 a filly by Galileo was born, called Filia Regina she has to date won 1 of 5 starts. The following year a colt by Galileo was born. He was chestnut and foaled down on April 8th 2011. In 2012 he was consigned to the Tattersalls October sale by which time Ouija Board had produced her fifth foal, a colt by Dubawi. The chestnut colt later called Australia was lot 172 on the October catalogue. He was knocked down to Demi O’Byrne for 525 000 Guineas. It was an excellent purchase at a sale that saw the top price of 2 500 000 guineas paid for Hydrogen, a son of Galileo out of Funsie (Samaurez) the dam of 2007 Derby winner Authorized. It is interesting that on the same catalogue was a colt by Galileo, the first foal out of multiple G1 winner Alexander Goldrun against whom Ouija Board had battled on a number of occasions. The colt, named Juniper Tree was purchased for the tab of Demi O’Byrne for 950 000 Guineas. To date, Hydrogen has run once and finished unplaced while Juniper Tree was third, six lengths behind Australia at The Curragh in his first start in July 2013. He raced in August when he was unplaced and has not raced since. Australia on the other hand has raced seven times for five wins. All three
are examples of the best to the best mind-set. All three were expensive yearlings but only one has walked into the winner’s enclosure. There is some irony in the name chosen by Mrs Sue Magnier for the chestnut colt. He is the first-ever colt to be given the name even though it has been used around the world twenty times. At Lords, Australia is synonymous with a long standing rivalry for The Ashes that borders on warfare. At Twickenham it stirs the English to ‘swing low’ with a deep and visceral passion and yet from Ballydoyle word was that Australia was a superstar: a horse equal to his sire, with heart that matched that of his dam. Here was a colt that could win The Derby, the most hallowed race on the English calendar. There is one former winner of The Derby with breeding credentials equal to Australia. He was the 1995 victor Lammtarra, by a Derby winner (none other than Nijinsky, last English Triple Crown winner) and out of an Oaks heroine (Snow Bride – although only after the disqualification of the Aga Kahn’s Aliysa who tested positive for a banned substance). Lammtarra came into The Derby with just one win from a single start as a 2 Year Old for trainer Alex Scott. Scott was certain of classic success but in a cruel twist of fate, an employee with a grievance shot and killed him before the classic season. The colt was transferred to Godolphin to Saeed Bin Suroor. Under Walter Swinburn he won
The Derby in a winning time that set a race and course record only bettered when Workforce won in 2010. Lammtarra retired after winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with four wins from four starts. His career at stud did not live up to his race record and he was sold to Japan. In 2006, Sheikh Mohammed bought him back and he returned to Dalham Hall in Newmarket to live out his days in retirement. Lammtarra died on July 7 this year, just a month after the running of The Derby. One other former Derby winner that does deserve a mention is Blair Athol who won way back in 1864. He was a chestnut colt by the 2000 Guineas winner and champion sire Stockwell and out of Blink Bonny who in 1857 won The Derby and two days later, The Oaks thus making him the only horse in the long history of the race to be out of both a Derby and an Oaks winner. The last filly to win the race was Fifinella in 1916 so one has to wonder if there will ever be another horse to claim a Derby winning dam. Australia raced for the first time at the Curragh in June of 2013 where he finished second in a field of 9, he won his next start a month later and in September won the G3 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Trial Stakes at Leopardstown. He made his season’s debut this year at Newmarket where he was third behind Night of Thunder and Kingman in the 2000 Guineas. His detractors immediately wrote him off, suggesting that victory in The Derby was not for Australia. But Aiden O’Brien remained confident, repeating what

he had already said after Leopardstown: that Australia was possibly the best horse he had ever trained. It placed Australia in the same league as George Washington, Kingsbarns and Camelot all of whom too had received such high praise. It also placed the spotlight very firmly on his charge. But as sportsmen around the globe know, team Australia is tough to beat. While the British racing press were sowing seeds of doubt and suggesting that the field was one of the weakest in years, the Ballydoyle unit kept their blinkers on and so when their charge arrived at Epsom in June, he was a well as he could ever be. With Joseph O’Brien aboard, he went down to the start alongside the best European 3YO colts. The field of 16 faced 2400 metres on a course uncompromising in every sense – climbing to the one running rail and then across to the other, left-handed round the top of the course and down towards Tattenham Corner and its contrary camber before a final climb to the line. 125 000 People packed the stands and in-field waiting to see how the best to the best would fare. If you have not done so already, do yourself a favour and watch the race courtesy of the kind people at Youtube. Watch how Joseph O’Brien allowed his charge to settle mid-field, where he raced until just after Tattenham Corner. Marvel then as the colt showed his true class, leaving all but the grey Kingston Hill in his wake. Cheer as the gallant challenge fell short and Australia galloped to a famous victory and listen to the race commentator as he says, “it was written in the stars, a day of destiny as Australia follows in his parents’ footsteps and wins the Epsom Classic”. The father and son
combination of Aiden and Joseph O’Brien did it again for owners Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor & Teo Ah Khing. It was O’Brien’s third consecutive Derby winner and the owners’ fourth. As they celebrated after the race it was clear that, as with the small urn of Ashes that means so much to eleven cricketers, each visit to The Derby podium for this team is a very special one. No matter what comes next on the track and at stud, no one will forget that Australia made his mark at Epsom. He will forever be remembered as a Derby-winner, a horse who carries on a long established tradition that has shaped the thoroughbred of today. Late in June, Australia went to the Curragh and romped home under a hand ride in the Irish Derby. “We still haven’t seen the best of this horse. ” Was the comment from Joseph O’Brien after the race. When he came out in the Juddmonte International Stakes over 2000m at York in August, he faced older horses for the first time. Again his detractors predicted defeat - he hadn’t raced since June, he was carrying more weight than before and the older horses were sure to have his measure. He turned into the long straight of the Kanvesmire last but when Joseph O’Brien shook the reins he changed gears and effortlessly passed them all, easing to a two length victory over French Derby winner The Grey Gatsby. By a dual Derby winner out of a dual Oaks winner he has already emulated his regal parents. No matter what follows, the 2014 Investec Derby winner has done what he was bred by Lord Derby to do. Any more is a bonus, but what a bounty that seems likely to be. October 2014 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

nder the careful management of the HHCU, Joanne Pursey and Amanda Carey, Harry The Horse has become a fund-raising phenomenon. With a little help from his team, Harry travels the country attending auctions and events to raise money for needy equines and proves irresistible wherever he goes. Harry is too valuable, not to mention too busy, to get to all his fans these days, so he stays at head office while his army of ‘Harry Kids’ heads out into the field. Instead of a receipt, each purchaser or sponsor receives a handmade Harry Kid, all kitted out in their corporate colours as a keepsake and proof of their donation. It has been an incredible journey since April 2013 and Harry would like to thank all the wonderful people who have contributed so generously to this very worthy cause. Harry has also been sponsored to events, attending the 2014 Dubai World Cup to support the South African runners, Investec Harry accompanies Amanda Carey to the races at Epsom, Rae’s Electrical Harry joined a 10-day 400km ride to raise funds for horses in Lesotho, International Racehorse Magazine Harry attended the Longines Prix de Diane in France with Johan Blom, Equipage Harry climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Karen Mills and Harry also joined Holly Page at SA Junior Champs in George. In addition, Harry takes regular trips to support the Outreach Programmes and also supports Tack ‘n Togs at Midfeeds. Harry has just joined the Coastal Horse Care Unit and hopes to raise funds and awareness in Natal. The money raised in the Harry The Horse Campaign will be used for Horse Care Unit special projects. Once a project has been decided on, the sponsors will be contacted to be involved in making a difference to the many lives of horses and donkeys.

ongines’ passion for equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. Seen on the racetracks as early as 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model enabled its user to time performances to the seconds. It was already being used by most sport judges in New York in 1886. In addition, the brand was involved for the first time in the Concours Hippique International Officiel de Genève as timekeeper in 1926. On the eve of the Prix de Diane Longines 2014, the second Longines Ladies Awards took place in the Grand Stables of the Chantilly Chateau. This award ceremony pays tribute to careers dedicated to the equine cause, illustrating the passion for horses shared by both Longines and the prize winners. These awards honour the positive influence and exceptional commitment of eminent women in the world of equestrian sports. The Grand Stables, built almost 300 years ago in 1719, is truly one

of the most breathtaking equestrian buildings in the world. Back in the 1700s it housed a whopping 250 horses and 300 hunting dogs. The Grand Stables form part of the opulent Chantilly Estate, surrounded by its manicured lawns, lakes, gardens and acres of lush forest. In the evenings, Prince Louis-Henri would hold sumptuous dinners under the building’s monumental dome, which soars 28 metres high. Architect Jean Aubert built the Grand Stables at the request of Louis-Henri de Bourbon, the seventh prince of Condé. The legend goes that the Prince was convinced he would be reincarnated as a horse and therefore wished for stables worthy of his rank. The French Revolution marked the brutal end of these princely times but the Grand Stables was miraculously saved, thanks to its occupation by the army. Only two statues would be destroyed for their lead: the Court of the kennels statue and its fountain, and Fame, which overlooked the dome’s roof. A copy of the latter was reinstated and donated to the Institut de France, two centuries later, in 1989, by Yves Bienaimé, as part of a sponsoring operation. At

the end of the nineteenth century, in 1886, the Duke of Aumale, fifth son of King Louis-Philippe and last resident of the Chantilly Estate, donated his property (château, Hippodrome, Stables, forest, Condé Museum, library and archives) to the French Institute on the condition that everything be maintained in its state. This year, the exceptional jury brought together Louis Romanet, President of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, Nathalie Bélinguier, President of the International Federation of Gentlemen and Ladies Riders, Ingmar de Vos, General Secretary of the International Equestrian Federation and Kate Winslet, Longines Ambassador of Elegance. They presented the Longines Ladies Awards 2014 to Sylvie Robert, Criquette Head-Maarek, Jing Li and Bo Derek. Sylvie Robert received an award for her contribution to the development of equestrian sport in Europe. She was in charge of the organization of the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping last April in Lyon, an exceptional event that attracted the best riders of the world. Criquette Head-Maarek’s prize was as sign of recognition for her contribution to developing the art of training and looking after a 46

racehorse. Indeed, she is the only woman to have won the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe twice, and the Prix de Diane Longines three times. Last year, her filly Treve was named World’s Best Racehorse and ranked first in the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings at the end of the season. Jing Li was honoured for her contribution to the development of equestrian sports in Asia, and especially in China. She organized the Longines Equestrian Beijing Masters in the Olympic Stadium of Beijing - the first show jumping competition with international riders in China. Last but not least, Bo Derek was rewarded for her efforts to promote and protect equine welfare and safety in the United States. She has worked closely with the Animal Welfare Institute, is an ambassador for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships and serves as a member of the California Horse Racing Board. During the evening,Walter von Känel, President of Longines honoured His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan with a Longines Equestrian Lépine pocket watch as a gift from the Horse Museum.
Prince Karim Aga Khan headed up the restoration project during 2013 and invested funding of more than $3 million for the makeover of the Grand Stables, restoring this magnificent facility to its former glory. For the Prix de Diane Longines 2014, the brand promoted a ladies’ watch in steel from its Conquest Classic collection. Set with 30 diamonds, this magnificent timepiece with its white mother-of-pearl dial and diamond hour symbols is a perfect example of the elegance of this unique race meeting. The Saturday morning kicked off with a unexpected surprise when the nearly 200 VIP Longines guests where ferried to the raceday in 15 horse drawn carriages, making our way from the magnificent forests on the outskirts of Chantilly into the heart of the Hippodrome de Chantilly. The first race card at Chantilly dates back to May 15, 1834 and its existing grandstand was built in 1879. Longines has sponsored the Prix de Diane since 2011 and 2014 was again done so in grand style, VIP guests from around the world, a menu fit for a king and queen, paparazzi and with the Chateau de Chantilly and Grand Stables as backdrop, probably one of the finest settings for a horse race you could find anywhere in the world. A spectacular morning of racing was topped of by Avenir Certain, the French 1,000 Guineas winner, completing a Classic double with a strong charge down the outside in the home straight carrying her a length clear of Amour A Papa in the Prix de Diane, the French Oaks. Miss France, who took the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, and the unbeaten Shamkala, who started favourite, were also in the field but Miss France found trouble in running at a vital stage while Shamkala, who travelled well, could not find an extra gear in the final quartermile. Neither could offer any response as Avenir Certain came with a powerful run under Gregory Benoist to give Jean-Claude Rouget, her trainer, his third success in the Prix de Diane in the past six years. “We thought she was a bit special, but it was a high-class field,” Rouget said. “Gregory rode her perfectly. I had only given him one bit of advice and that was not to panic, and he didn’t. She seemed quite far back when they came into the final straight, but I could see that she was going well and really relaxed and Gregory got her going at the right time”. “She made me think a little bit of Zarkava,” Rouget said. “Avenir Certain won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches [French 1,000 Guineas] in soft ground and she won this on good ground, so she is quite straightforward. The genuine charm of Chantilly, the magnificent views, the great hospitality and great new friendships forged, makes this an event I will look forward to annually. A great thanks to Longines and especially Tanya Miles from Longines, South Africa for making this possible. 48

BEHIND THE SCENES AT
ROYAL ASCOT Queen Anne, out for a leisurely ride near Windsor Castle in 1711, happened upon an area of open heath. She thought it was the perfect place to “gallop horses at full stretch” and Ascot Racecourse was born. Yet these days Royal Ascot is much more than just a place to gallop horses at full stretch. It is a treasure trove of amazing art, an extraordinary culinary experience and with some of the world’s best racehorses thrown into the mix, what more could one ask for? I went behind the scenes recently to do a little exploring and discovered some amazing sculptures, scattered strategically around the racecourse.
J
ust behind the pre-parade ring on the Gredley Lawn, a pair of imposing iron gates, slightly parted, greets the inquisitive visitor. Through these gates, a group of people appear to have gathered and it is only upon closer inspection that one realises that you are looking at life size bronze statues. Welcome to the sculpture called “Uniting Two Societies”, originally commissioned by Mr W L Gredley. The gates are the original gates of the Harland and Wolff Company, made at the company prior to the Second World War and through which the daily workforce entered. Harland and Wolff ’s main business was building ships (including the Titanic I might add). They did however also make large iron gates and in 1952, they were commissioned to make the Royal Ascot Entrance Gates. It is through these gates that ordinary people such as soldiers, sailors, owners, trainers and jockeys, as well as world leaders, Prime Ministers, Presidents and Royalty have passed. At the far end, facing the assembled crowd are Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip, greeting both the establishment and the working class, two societies coming together to meet their Monarch in a giant sculpture. 52
INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE October 2014
It is Ascot’s equine heroes that feature next, in the form of lifesize statues. Motivator, galloping “at full stretch” would definitely have pleased Queen Anne as he shares the lawn named in his honour with a champagne bar, while a life-size bronze of Canford Cliffs unveiled in 2013, towers over Royal Enclosure guests. In the centre of the Parade Ring,Yeats, four-time winner of Ascot’s most historic race, the Gold Cup stands in solitary splendour. First run in 1807, with the winner Master Jackey earning a whopping 100 guineas, the Ascot Gold Cup holds a special place in history as the most prestigious staying race in Great Britain. Yeats’ record of four consecutive victories from 2006 to 2009 is unlikely to be equalled and he has certainly earned his place in the parade ring. Another who has earned his spot at Royal Ascot is jockey Frankie Dettori. Just past the magnificent entrance gates, against the red brick wall, is a bronze jockey, leaping high in the air, arms aloft. Meet Frankie Dettori celebrating his “Magnificent Seven”. On the 28th of September 1996, Dettori was engaged to ride seven horses of varying ability in seven races at Ascot. One after the other he returned victorious, until only the last, the seventh race remained. The BBC TV channel had switched to the news already, believing that Dettori could not possibly win
on all his rides. They were mistaken and in the middle of the news broadcast, the station switched back to Ascot, just in time to see Dettori win his seventh and last ride of the day. Finally, there is a new statue, a statue still in the making, for right in front of the main Grandstand is a beautiful off-white horse. Sculptor Edward Waites has spent the last three months at his studio in Newmarket, building the welded steel armature for the five percent larger than life statue, before painstakingly moulding sculpting plasticine over it to form the stallion Makfi. Waites is on hand daily to explain how he goes about turning a living horse into a larger than life plasticine model, before casting it in bronze. Needless to say, his more pressing task seems to be preventing enthusiastic visitors from trying to clamber on its back. To end off with, there is the quirky, situated at both ends of the racecourse. For at the top entrance near Car Park One, you will find a perfect topiary of a four-in-hand, complete with driver, reins and whip, while at the other end, a giant bronze horse head, with a malevolent stare, presides over racegoers on the Stewards House Lawn. Hungry after all that walking? Then it is definitely time for
some fine dining! On 5, Ascot Racecourse’s newest fine dining restaurant, is home to TV celebrity and Michelin star chef, Tom Kerridge. From his eyrie up on the 5th floor of the Grandstand, with a bird’s eye view of the winning post and spectacular views across the course, Kerridge prepares a four course lunch followed by a bespoke afternoon tea. Lunch is his modern take on British Classics, while he assures me that his afternoon tea is not just petite fours, but “small bites with bold flavours”! At £960 per day, including fine wines and champagne, the 180 guests who daily dine at On 5 expect only the very best and preparing spectacular food at any big event is never straightforward. Most guests need to be finished with their main course before Her Majesty proceeds down the straight mile and with guests disappearing to the parade ring on a regular basis, serving four courses can become a logistical nightmare.Yet after three days of service, Kerridge is still smiling and one happy customer even commented that, “it is better than eating at a top restaurant in London”. Not keen on the British Classic? Then Atul Kochhar, one of Britain’s most acclaimed chefs, will be happy to serve you a modern Indian alternative from the Panoramic Restaurant. Or you can experience the very best of French cuisine in The Balmoral, Carriages or Sandringham Restaurant, where Executive chef Guy Krenzer will be preparing mouth-watering dishes with fresh produce delivered daily from the Parisian markets. On level two of the Grandstand, the Parade Ring Restaurant is Royal Ascot’s premier restaurant adorned with an abundance of yellow roses and overlooks the Parade Ring. At £1200 per head, you pay for the view as well as for the sumptuous lunch. If money is not a problem, then membership of the Royal Ascot Racing Club (RARC) might be your thing. At a mere £10 000 per year, you can share in the six horses owned by the Club as well as dine in the RARC’s restaurant on racedays. Here the décor is genteel opulence with bronze statues scattered around the room, while an old-fashioned hat rack caters for those pesky top hats and a champagne tower welcomes the 280 members. Out in the Royal Enclosure Garden, the Norfolk Restaurant offers a three course a la carte lunch starting at around £108, while the Seafood Restaurant offers none other than seafood of course, including lobster, crab and seafood platters. Scattered around the course there are eateries for the hasty with the Gourmet Deli, Seafood Terrace and the Caviar House & Prunier catering for a quick bite of salmon, foie gras or caviar. And what is a Racecourse without that true English meal, the quintessential fish and chips? The Fish and Chips comes to the rescue, serving generous helpings of fish and chips, with mushy peas as an optional. Ascot is full of surprises, many tucked away in nooks and crannies and if you are prepared to take the time and explore a little, you are sure to be delighted by what you find and you will definitely not go home hungry. 54

BACKWORTH
STUD Backworth Stud is a boutique thoroughbred breeding establishment, owned by Keith Russon and Ian Todd. It is on one of the most beautiful farms in the KZN midlands – a property enjoying sweeping views towards the Southern Berg and South Coast, filled with a depth of history and that sense of establishment that comes from generations of custodianship.

pon arrival at Backworth there is a welcoming feeling of warmth and tranquility and a surrounding breath-taking beauty, and one senses the attention to detail which reaches from the impeccable facilities to each paddock housing quality mares with outstanding pedigrees. Backworth Stud was only established in 2000 – and in just 14 years have achieved immense success, including breeding the likes of Gr1 winning Chocolicous, who recently made the headlines again, foaling a chestnut Frankel filly in New South Wales, Australia. The foal is the first for Chocolicious, a daughter of Kahal. Chocolicious, out of Candy Box by Exclusive Patriot, raced in South Africa and Dubai. Winning on debut and placing second from just two starts, the brilliant filly went out to win the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship over 1200m.

Recognising immediate talent, her then trainer Herman Brown sent her overseas to Dubai. She debuted at Meydan eight months later, going on to place in all three starts in Dubai. A decision was made to bring Chocolicious back to South Africa and immediately she continued her form, seven months later re-igniting her South African racing career to place three times before another win. She placed just two and half lengths off Ebony Flyer in the South African Fillies Sprint (Gr1), and in total achieved six wins with eight places. Sold to Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, Chocolicious was sent to the UK and covered by the brilliant Frankel standing his first season at stud, subsequently going on to sell for €400,000 at the Goff ’s breeding stock sale in Ireland to Oliver St Lawrence.

Other outstanding achievements for Russon and Todd have been two Gr2 winners – First Again and Colour Of Courage, with multiple Stakes Winners Variometer and Raise The Bar carrying the Backworth flag to victory on numerous occasions. First Again has returned to Backworth as a broodmare and is due to foal to Irish Flame this season, whilst Colour Of Courage, the first Group winner for his sire Judpot, was sold to Mauritius.
earnings, earning first position in Places to Runners of 38% and an outstanding percentage of 54% Winners to Runners, in a season which saw many of the progeny Keith and Ian had bred to win a number of Bold Black-Type races across tracks in South Africa. Their achievements were recognized when they were awarded the KZN Breeders Award for Breeding Achievement in 2012.
Not only have Backworth Stud produced the likes of the aforementioned, but also the likes of Raise The Bar, Varlet, Variometer, Glitter Star and Devonella. Keith and Ian sold the mare Emperor’s Warning in foal to Kahal, a mating which produced Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes winner Tales Of Bravery.
Keith has been involved in the breeding industry for 40 years, and is recognized for his talent to raise fast horses. Besides training in horse veterinary, a great love of horses, and a passionate knowledge of pedigrees, he is an astute business man. Based on previous experiences and learning curves, Keith and Ian chose to keep their farming operation small and hands on.
2012 proved to be a phenomenal year, with the Sporting Post statistics for the top 50 South African breeders of the 2011-2012 season - from just 37 runners - Backworth Stud ended up in 30th place on the National Log with R2,272,386

broodmare band, and purchasing shares and services to the best stallions countrywide. The result of which is reflecting in increasing successes in both the sales rings and racetracks across South Africa. One also regularly sees the Backworth Stud cream and brown racing colours on courses around the country. Producing a class thoroughbred that is good legged and a reputation for being sound in training, Backworth’s yearlings consistently achieve high marks on conformation at the annual Yearling Sale inspection. The 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale saw Backworth sell four yearlings for an enviable average of R568 750 each – the top price of R1-million for an outstanding Silvano colt named Alloy, out of Refined Gold from the immediate damline of Horse Chestnut. Dillyn Brijlal, the mares are brought into their stables every day for feeding and each mare and foal are given plenty of personal attention - Keith points out that a number of trainers have said that Backworth-bred horses are a pleasure to start, own and train, owing to the horses’ easy-going temperaments - but with an internal fire to win. Keith and Ian also attribute Backworth’s success to the ‘hands on’ way in which their mares and foals are taken care of and reared, in an environment where ‘soul’ is omnipresent. When questioned about what the key to the ongoing success of Backworth is, Keith has an interesting theory which clearly works for Backworth Stud - not only in the pairing of suitable sires and dams, for conformation and pedigrees. “ I like to believe that if you give your mares your best, they will give you their best!” Backworth Stud is respected in the industry for their professionalism, their commitment, and believing in their branding - “We are worth backing”!

ush Hill had extended the invitation to the surrounding farms to showcase their stallions, with The Assayer, A.P. Answer and Just As Well making the trip. Warwick offered a warm welcome to all those in attendance: “It has always been our firm belief that the only way forward for all of us in the breeding, and indeed racing fraternity, is if we can work together and support each other.” The first stallion to make an appearance was The Assayer, who will be standing his first season at Yellow Star Stud. Introduced by Patrick Ellis of Yellow Star, he is the first son of Galileo to stand in South Africa and the first grey sire at stud in KZN for some time. The Assayer has been welcomed excitedly by the breeding fraternity based on his pedigree, a highly successful nick that has produced the likes of the phenomenal Frankel. Out of Stakes Winning mare Crystal Charm (by Danehill), who also finished second to Fairy King Prawn in the Hong Kong Sprint,The Assayer won and placed nine times – two of them each a Gr1 - the Golden Horseshoe and Premier’s Championship. Redoute’s Promise was then brought to the fore for viewing. “A great testimony to his very balanced temperament,” Warwick announced that Redoute’s Promise had only arrived at the farm

the day before, as the imposing horse walked about quite unfazed. “This is Redoute’s Promise who is not only a son of the mighty Redoute’s Choice, but is out of the South African flag-flying multiple Gr1 winning filly Perfect Promise. Sadly this young horse never got to fulfil his promise on the track due to an injury in training prior to him having his first start. Inheriting the crown from his sire Danehill, Redoute’s Choice is the king of Australian Sires - building his legacy through the deeds of his sire sons and broodmare daughters who continue to leave Gr1 stars of their own. We all remember the exploits of Perfect Promise locally where she won the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas, but she made us all proud when she became the first SAF horse to win a Gr1 in Australia in CF Orr Stakes. Her full sister is Iridescence, also a local Gr1 winner - winning the Woolavington, she also defeated the great Ouija Board, the dam of Australia, in the Gr1 QE II Stakes in Hong Kong. “ Clifton Stud’s A.P. Answer – one of the first of two sons by A.P. Indy on show for the day - Clifton’s owner Peter Blyth announced that A.P. Answer had undergone Equinome’s gene testing and that A.P. Answer had tested as a C:T, producing Sprinter-Miler types. Amongst his first crop of smart winners he has produced is Beckedorf, placing in the Gr3 Godolphin
Irish Flame
Barb Stakes, and fourth in the Gr1 Gold Medallion. Stamping his progeny with their good-looks, large muscular hindquarters and strong Danzig features, A.P. Answer’s successful dam-line traces back to the likes of Storm Bird and Green Tune. The second son of A.P. Indy to make an appearance was that of Just As Well, presented by Bruce Le Roux of Spring Valley Stud who stands him. Just As Well bears a strong resemblance to his Champion sire and is owned by Roski Stud in partnership with Anton Proctor. Just As Well tested for the Equinome speed gene and returned as a C:T, indicating his progeny will be sprinter-milers. His first crop of yearlings sold at Nationals this year, the top priced colt changing hands for R200 000, named Just Positive. Just As Well, impeccably-bred from Gr1 winning mare No Matter What by Nureyev, had four wins in a glittering Group race career. A stallion with a story to tell, he was injured and given a break, but his American owners took an unconventional route and let him “run in the mountains “ for a year - he came back to walk away with the Gr3 Arlington Handicap, and won the Gr1 Northern
Dancer Stakes in Canada - only to have this result overturned in court a year later, which now has him as second. He added to his record by placing in four Gr1’s and two Gr2’s. His half-brother Utley recently won the Gr2 Dixie Stakes and his immediate dam-line has produced top sires, with the likes of Raven’s Pass and E Dubai. Irish Flame made an impressive entry, having let down into a stunning individual after covering his first season last year. Beautifully put together and oozing quality and athleticism that made him the great racehorse he was, Irish Flame, together with his big striding hind-legs gave the 170 breeders in attendance an impressive display of athleticism.“Last year I introduced this horse as one that you had to take note of, and many serious breeders did exactly that and to be honest it’s not hard to see why” states Warwick Render as he introduced the big dark bay to the crowd.“The only Equus Horse Of the year to ever retire to stud in KZN, this dual Gr1 winner was also the first son of Dynasty to retire to stud in South Africa. “He won seven races in total, two of them at Gr1 level, beating some top horses in the process and earning himself three Equus October 2014 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

awards, including the most coveted of all, Equus Horse Of TheYear. In the SA Derby he annihilated the much touted Pierre Jourdan by a massive 9.5 lengths. He possessed an incredible turn of foot which he put to devastating use in most of his races. “ John Koster of Klawervlei Stud introduced Curved Ball(AUS) to the breeders present, the first son of Fastnet Rock to stand at stud in South Africa. His first crop are now yearlings and eagerly anticipated. Possessing a world-class pedigree, out of Zabeel mare Curvaceous, Curved Ball had three wins in South Africa from just seven starts over 1400m - 1800m. His wins include the Gr2 Dingaans and Sea Cottage Listed Stakes. Standing just shy of 16.2, Curved Ball has let down into an imposing individual and possesses super temperament. At 15 years of age, Irish-bred Toreador arrived trotting besides his handler, looking an absolute picture. Owned by the Tawny Syndicate,Toreador is the most successful son of Danehill to stand his stud career in South Africa. “He offers incredible value as one of the most consistent sires in the country. Largely an influence for speed, he has produced Stakes Performers in every crop to date with an average winning distance of 1300m,” enthuses Warwick. “ His leading progeny to date include Champion Two Year Colt and winner of the Gr1 Gold Medallion - Link Man. Jackodore, She’s A Stunner, Deliver The Power and Straight Forward. Over a bit more ground he has had the likes of Las Ramblas who was beaten into second by superstar Igugu in the Gr1 SA Fillies Classic. “How reliable a sire he has proven to be, is backed up in no small 66

measure by his continued popularity at the sales with his progeny - at the recent Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale making prices of up to R350 000.” The last in the line-up for the day is the big imposing liver chestnut son of King Of Kings, King’s Chapel(AUS). “King’s Chapel was New Zealand’s Horse Of The Year at the end of his three year old career, when he also took the titles of Champion Three Year Old and Champion Sprinter Miler.” “A winner of three Gr1 races over 1200m, 1400m and 1600m he broke the respective course records on all three occasions. He retired a winner of ten races. He has enjoyed fantastic support each season at stud here in South Africa.” Discussing the kind of progeny to come from King’s Chapel, Warwick comments that “Just recently a highly renowned breeder who has supported him strongly from the outset, commented King’s Chapel ‘has upgraded on every single mare I have sent to him so far.’ Warwick goes onto say that King’s Chapel’s race results on the international stage have continued to roll in with him, recording just recently the rare feat of three winners in three countries in one weekend. From relatively few runners he has continued to produce winners in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. “This year saw his first local progeny at the yearling sales, where we were thrilled to see how many highly regarded trainers saw the same merits in this horse’s progeny as we have. His top price was R350 000 for a smart colt bought by Sean Tarry.” Warwick ended a wonderful day with strong words of encouragement: “We believe there are indeed exciting times ahead!”

he TVG Diana Stakes (GI), held on opening weekend of the Saratoga meet, attracted a solid field of fillies and mares. The eventual winner, Somali Lemonade, came into the race with a good 2014 record. Prior to the Diana Stakes on July 19, the Michael Matz-trained mare had started four times, winning twice, placing second and showing in her two other outings. In her most recent race before her Saratoga win, she crossed the wire third in the Longines Just a Game Stakes (GI), six lengths behind the victorious Coffee Clique. With Luis Saez aboard in the Diana, this dark bay filly would race in third throughout average fractions of 24.37, 49.84, and 1:13.96 for the opening quarter mile, half mile, and three-quarter mile respectively. Into the stretch, she made her bid and led inside the sixteenth pole. At the wire, she held off the late charge of

The day following the Diana, Stopchargingmaria would win the TVG Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) for trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole. A popular Graded Stakes-winning and Grade I-placed juvenile last fall, Stopchargingmaria had finished off the board in her first two starts of 2014, but won the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (GII) in her outing prior to the CCA Oaks. Pletcher remarked that she had never been training better leading up to her first GI victory in the CCA Oaks. the CCA Oaks quite easily by five lengths over Unbridled Forever and four others. Stopchargingmaria raced just off the lead in third, came out three paths wide with a quarter mile remaining, and drew away to win with a final time of 1:49.80 for the 1 1/8 mile journey. In taking the CCA Oaks, she became the eleventh Group/Grade I winner for her sire. In the week following the Diana and CCA Oaks, Tonalist made his first start since his triumph in the Belmont Stakes (GI). The handsome bay returned in Saratoga’s Jim Dandy Stakes (GII), a race named for Gallant Fox’s 100-1 Travers Stakes upsetter. Superbly conditioned by Christophe Clement, Tonalist entered the Jim Dandy as a solid favorite. However, he would finish second in his comeback race to Wicked Strong. After a rough break from the outermost stall in the six horse field, Wicked Strong and Rajiv Maragh were just a head behind the pacemaker throughout the opening fractions of 24.45 for the opening quarter mile, and 47.73 for the half mile. Midway through the final turn, Maragh gave his mount the cue. Wicked Strong drifted three paths wide with two furlongs remaining and brushed Tonalist’s side into the stretch, but responded to urging and led the field to the wire by 2 ¼ lengths. The Hard Spun son won the 1 1/8 mile race with a final time of 1:49.16. On August 2, some of the top three-year-olds of last year would face off in the prestigious Whitney Handicap. connections of this race named for her family. The sophisticated influence of Marylou Whitney envelopes Saratoga – she is as synonymous to the Spa as the Twin Spires are to Churchill Downs. She is forever an essential component in the fabric of Saratoga. Her love for the equine athlete has made her a great monument to the horse racing industry, enshrining her in the hearts and minds of all who are touched by her vast influence. Her heartfelt care for horses led her to open the Kentucky Equine Humane Center and to become an avid supporter of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. Marylou’s generous contributions reach beyond racing, as she has impacted the lives of numerous people with her philanthropic gestures toward land preservation, and preventing and treating cancer for women. Marylou acquired a love for the sport after marrying C.V. Whitney, whose family had been a fixture in the sport for three generations. The foundation of her passion is intertwined with the welfare of the Thoroughbreds, on and off the track, as well as the care of backstretch workers and the industry’s future. After the death of C.V. Whitney in 1992, Marylou promised C.V Whitney that she would restore Saratoga to its glorious heyday – a fulfilled goal that has enhanced Saratoga by unimaginable margins. She also maintained his high-quality racing stable and breeding stock that would bring her great success in the form of 2003 Champion Three-Year-Old Female, Bird Town, and 2004 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner, Birdstone. These homegrown stars brought Marylou the Ogden Phipps Award as Top Breeder.

Upon accepting the Eclipse Award of Merit for 2010, she stated, “… As we look to the future, we must also pass on the passion and excitement of this wondrous sport to the next generation is our obligation. A candle loses nothing by lighting another...” Marylou has been one of the most inspirational figures in this sport. Money – whether it is lack of or great amounts – will reveal the true nature of a person. Marylou has shown in many situations that she is not only a figure of grace, but also that she possesses a kind and generous heart. The Whitney Handicap is symbolic of the family for which the race is named. Attracting many of the top older male runners in the country, this nine furlong contest frequents the race records of various sovereigns of the sport. Onion made Secretariat followers cry when he denied the tremendous machine a victory in the 1973 Whitney Handicap. The inaugural running of the Whitney in 1928 is another example of its prominence, as it was won by the influential mare Black Maria, who is one of the six female runners to earn a Whitney Handicap victory. This elite group of fillies and mares includes racing legends such as Gallorette, Lady’s Secret, and Personal Ensign. This year’s Whitney Handicap seemed poised to become another exciting edition to the race’s history. Winner of last year’s Belmont Stakes, Palace Malice had not been bested in his four starts of 2014. However, he would face the challenge of 2013’s Travers Stakes (GI) winner, Will Take Charge. Although the chestnut son of Unbridled’s Song had a somewhat lacking campaign leading up to the Whitney, his presence could not be ignored. Also in the nine horse field were Itsmyluckyday, Prayer for Relief, Golden Ticket, and Departing. However, in ‘The Graveyard of Champions’, 10-1 chance Moreno would win the Whitney. The Southern Equine Stables homebred gelding won the race gate to wire, paying $22.00 for the victory. The Ghostzapper son broke slowly, but jockey Junior Alvarado hustled his mount to the lead. Moreno set a pace of 23.67 for the opening quarter mile, 47.50 for the half mile, 1:11.31 for threequarter mile, and 1:35.41 for one mile. On the far turn, Alvarado gently urged the eventual winner. Second in last year’s Travers, Moreno maintained his lead into the homestretch, but drifted wide nearing the final furlong under vigorous urging. The runner-up, Itsmyluckyday, was unable to catch the leader. The final time for the 1 1/8 mile race was 1:48.05 and he won with a 1 ¼ length margin. Will Take Charge crossed the wire a deflated third, and Palace Malice was sixth. Leading up to the Whitney, the Eric Guillot-trained Moreno was unsuccessful in any of his 2014 starts, his best finish being a second beaten by three lengths to Zivo in the Suburban Handicap (GII).
The two other races both spotlighted promising juveniles. The $300,000 Adirondack Stakes presented a field of fillies racing at 6 ½ furlongs on dirt. Cavorting, owned by Stonestreet Stables and conditioned by Kieran McLaughlin, would win the Adirondack by 1 ¾ lengths over Angela Renee. The bay filly was piloted by Irad Ortiz, Jr., and crossed the wire in 1:16.49. The first two finishers were both by the Darley Stud stallion, Bernardini. In the Saratoga Special, the final time was slightly slower than its filly equivalent. At the 6 ½ furlong distance, the winner, I Spent It, ran 0.3 seconds slower than Cavorting’s Adirondack. The son of Super Saver carried the silks of Alex and JoAnn Lieblong to victory with a margin of 2 ¾ lengths over Mr. Z, who was another five lengths ahead the third-placed WV Jetsetter. Javier Castellano rode the colt to win with a time of 1:16.79.
The proceeding Saturday featured the prestigious Alabama Stakes (GI) which was won by Coaching Club American Oaks victress During the weekend following the sale, there was a trio of Stopchargingmaria. The track was rated as fast for the 1 ¼ mile popular graded stakes events: the Fourstardave Handicap (GII), contest on the dirt. In the Bernard Baruch Handicap (GII), the seven year old Wise Dan was making his return from a colic scare earlier in the season. The resilient chestnut entered the 1 1/6 mile race on turf as the heavy favorite. The Morton Fink-owned gelding was fractious in the gates, even sitting down and throwing his rider. Wise Dan had to be backed out reloaded, but broke cleanly at the start. He strode well not far off the pace in fourth and was close to the rail around the first turn. After that point, he drifted to the outside and gradually advanced as the race progressed. He was urged with 5/16 remaining and fought to take the lead. With his strong kick, he was able to hold off a solid Optimizer, who carried a whopping 11 pounds less than our protagonist, at the wire. It’s incredible to have this horse coming back.” Trainer Charlie LoPresti added, “We wanted a good race for him to get started with. He’s been through a lot. I knew he was training good and I knew he was going to run good. I wouldn’t have been disappointed if he was beat today; it would have been something to build on. He showed today why he is the two-time Horse of the Year.” 74

After Stonetastic’s win in the Prioress Stakes (GII), Palace surprised in the Forego Stakes (GI) by 3 ½ lengths. The favored Clearly Now showed ability, but could not overcome a mediocre ride from Jose Lezcano. The historic Woodward Stakes (GI) turned out to be the highlight of the day due to its riveting finish. Itsmyluckyday, a four year old colt by Lawyer Ron, defeated the already-controversial Moreno by ½ lengths. While the latter of the pair was the favorite, Itsmyluckyday was the second choice by a small margin. Throughout the race, Moreno led easily and Itsmyluckyday trailed not far behind with a heavy stride. Into the stretch, the favorite appeared to be a clear winner but the eventual champion raced up to his side with a surprising burst. Under deliberate urging from jockey Junior Alvarado, Moreno ran into his rival and rubbed his side five times without correction. Unfazed, Itsmyluckyday was able to get ahead crossing the wire. Despite having pushed his mount into the winner, Alvarado lodged an inquiry against Itsmyluckyday. After a close look, the inquiry was disregarded and Itsmyluckyday was declared the victor with a final time of 1:48.84. Eddie Plesa, Jr. trained the winning colt. He said, “It’s like when you have a child that does something out of the ordinary, exceptional, that you know he could do; that’s what it felt like. I mean, horses aren’t your children, but we take great pride in our horses; we take great pride in our craft. FUELS A DREAM By Bunny Hinzman / Photos by Matt Wooley - EquiSport Photos
Saratoga, New York not only hosts a signature North American racing meet, but also boasts a top boutique yearling sale. Every summer, Fasig-Tipton features approximately 200 premier yearlings who strut impressively for discriminating buyers from around the world. To have your yearling selected for one of the coveted hip numbers is an accomplishment in itself.
B
reeders Mike and Nancy Mazzoni of Lexington, Kentucky, offered a well-developed filly to the auction block with the hopes of perpetuating their dream of successfully thriving in the competitive Thoroughbred industry. Hip No. 81, expertly consigned by Bluewater Sales, was worthy of garnering the second highest price of the sale. A daughter of Tapit and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) winner She Be Wild, by Oflee Wild, sold to Solis and Litt for $1,150,000. Nancy Mazzoni commented, “The whole week was so emotional for us. We had a special connection with her and leaving her at the farm for Bluewater Sales prep was emotional. For her to be respected in the Thoroughbred world was probably the highlight of our Thoroughbred career. It’s been almost five years now since She Be Wild’s Breeders’ Cup. “To see her so well received and that everybody respected her meant so much to Mike and I because we believed in

her.” She continued, “It was as emotional as the Breeders’ Cup. If I had to describe that night with one word, I would describe it as magical. Even the next day, so many people came to see her. It was incredible.” The bottom half of the grey filly’s pedigree shows her first three generations proudly descend from the Mazzoni’s breeding stock. They began their business venture into the Thoroughbred industry in 2003 by breeding to sell. Slow to start, Mike and Nancy wisely reached for the racetrack to help with the balance sheet and retained some of their horses to race, one of which was She Be Wild. After the bay filly’s major victory in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, their business was infused with the capital it needed to move their plan forward. After retiring She Be Wild, Nancy Mazzoni rejected the thought of selling her and they began planning for the future. Nancy Mazzoni said, “The beauty of the scenario is that at
Hip No. 81 with her dam, She Be Wild
the same time we could not sell She Be Wild as a yearling, we also decided not to sell her dam, Trappings, because she was not in foal and we would not be able to get anything for her at the auction. “Our plan now is to go forward with building quality in the family and using the best pedigree matches of stallions to give them the best opportunity to succeed not only in the sales ring but of course on the race track. We took all of the proceeds from the Breeders’ Cup and put it right back into the mares for that exact purpose.” She Be Wild is currently in foal to the superhorse, Frankel; already she has a striking filly by Smart Strike at her side. Hip No. 81 is a result of She Be Wild’s second breeding to Tapit and appears to be a quick developer with potent hindquarters. The first cross, Shebealittlewild, is at Arlington Park in the Wayne Catalano string where they are patiently allowing her time to develop.
Nancy Mazzoni remarked, “I believe her [Hip No. 81] confirmation is a balance of both parents. She is put together perfectly, very balanced.” She continued to state, “She has her dam’s brain - which is a good thing, smart and tough. As a foal running around the farm, there always seemed to be a difference in her confidence level and that made her a standout.” This year, a lovely group of fillies dominated the Saratoga Yearling Sale. Girls headlined; the three highest priced Thoroughbreds were each female. The most expensive was a bay filly consigned by Eaton Sales and purchased by Willis B. Horton for $1,250,000. Offered as Hip No. 150, she is by War Front and out of the Seeking the Gold mare, Charming. The yearling’s dam has produced two foals to race, both winners, and one a Graded Stakes placed juvenile. Hip No. 150’s second dam, Take Charge Lady, has foaled major Grade I winners such as Will Take Charge and Take Charge Indy.

Just behind the Mazzoni filly in price, Hip No. 69 rounds out the three highest-priced yearlings of the sale. This grey filly is by Tapit, out of Rote, by Tiznow. Consigned by John Stuart’s Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, she is the first foal produced by Rote, whose first and second dam foaled multiple Graded Stakes winners. Hip No. 69 sold to Regis Farm for $1,000,000. Not nearly a sales topper, but interesting to note, Hip No. 44 was Galileo’s one-horse representation at the Saratoga Yearling Sale. The filly is out of the Irish 1,000 Guineas (GrI) placer, Lucas Line, by Danehill. She was offered by Hunter Valley Farm and sold to William H. Franz for $325,000. The overall statistics for the Saratoga sale were healthy, with 114 horses sold for a total of $33,284,000 – 4% more than last year. The average was $291,000, down about $3,000 from 2013, and the median was $237,000, down 5% from last year. The leading buyer was John Ferguson for Darley Stud, purchasing 11 yearlings for $4,675,000. A BRIEF HISTORY In 1898, North America’s oldest Thoroughbred auction company, Fasig-Tipton, was formed by William B. Fasig and Edward A. Tipton. Its first headquarters were located in New York City at Madison Square Garden, and they initially sold high-end road and carriage horses, as well as Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses.

Following Fasig’s death in 1903, Tipton brought along Enoch James Tranter as a partner in the company. Tranter altered the catalog pages from showing the first thirty dams to only displaying the immediate family, leaving room to focus on their breeding and racing record. Additionally, Fasig-Tipton became the first auction company to require certificates of health and pregnancy confirmation for broodmares in their sales. Fasig-Tipton’s signature event, the Saratoga Yearling Sale, traces back to 1917 when the company created an alliance with leading Kentucky-based breeders to offer yearlings during the prestigious Saratoga race meeting. It did not take long for the sale to become one of the top horse auctions in the world – in 1918, Man O’ War was sold. Other breeding and racing greats would follow, among the many are Raise a Native, Natalma and Danzig. In 2008, the Dubai-based Synergy Investments, Ltd., purchased Fasig-Tipton. The new owner has rapidly brought the company to the forefront of the industry by updating their facilities. They have offered better service with technological upgrades and placing representatives throughout the world. FasigTipton now stretches beyond the American coasts and has a cross-continental presence in Australasia, Europe and South America.

RATHMOR STUD INTRODUCE
NOBLE TUNE
Noble Tune’s arrival was a sight to behold as the young breath-taking stallion prospect walked eagerly next to his handler, a handsome horse with a beautiful head, pricked ears, a perfect length of rein followed by big-striding hind legs that land with perfect precision, he is gifted with an incredibly good walk which is reflected by his outstanding race record.
A
ll of the above is accentuated by his four white socks against a glowing deep dark bay coat - it doesn’t come more perfect than that for any horseman. He is a horse that grabs the eye.
Michael McHardy of Rathmor Stud introduced the first son of Unbridled’s Song to breeders ahead of the opening of the covering season, with guest speakers’ Lynton Ryan and bloodstock agent Alistair Brown addressing the crowd of enthusiastic guests and breeders. Noble Tune is the complete package for any breeder, a beautifully conformed horse that would suit any mare. Lynton Ryan enthused about how fortunate South Africa was to get a horse of this calibre to stand in this country; he worked closely with the family of Serena’s Song in America and has a deep appreciation of the new blood brought to this country. It was a sentiment shared with Alistair Brown who was tasked with ‘head-hunting’ a suitable stallion prospect for Rathmor, breeders of South African and American Gr1 winning race-mare Gypsy’s Warning. Alistair Brown has introduced a number of successful stallions to this country, including the likes of Al Mufti, Fort Wood and Qui Danzig, and apart from his attraction to the colt’s pedigree and first few races – where he immediately “tagged” the colt as a desirable prospect, he recollects his thoughts on the selection
of Noble Tune: “In America they document their workout times, and in mid-February this year Noble Tune worked five furlongs in 58.55 seconds, that’s a very good time even for a race of 1000m – and it was just a workout. Noble Tune was on the verge of a major comeback when we bought him; we had hoped that we would get in a race or two, however during the purchasing process they generally will cut back on the training, as they don’t want something to happen to them. He retired 100% sound. It is so nice to see a sound horse here today with clean limbs.” “We were reaching six weeks before pre-export procedure and we didn’t want to rush just to get a race into him, as we felt the horse had done enough, having won a Gr2 and Gr3, as well as placing a very close second in the Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf – which, of course, was Lasix free.” “I am just so passionate about the breed and this kind of pedigree, and if you look at the kind of stallions I have found for South Africa - such as Al Mufti, Fort Wood, Goldkeeper, and Qui Danzig amongst others – well, those pedigrees are fantastic pedigrees now; but they were also fantastic pedigrees back then too and it’s the same for Noble Tune.” Alistair goes on to point out that Noble Tune’s third dam, outstanding race-mare Serena’s Song is still around, and at 22 she has foaled a filly this year by Medaglia d’Oro so the story is far from over. Regarding Noble Tune’s sire-line, one unique to the South African studbook, Alistair points out that Fappiano is now considered a new branch of the Mr Prospector sire-line. “Unbridled’s Song has two of the top seven first season sires in America this year, and three of the top six second season sires – almost every major farm in Kentucky stands a son of Unbridled’s Song, but only one stud in South Africa has one. He is a very exciting horse and I am so thrilled that Rathmor have got him, and especially for KZN.” Unbridled’s Song recently made more headlines with his flashy chestnut son Will Take Charge, who was named in the top 10 log of the Longines World’s Best Racehorses. With a Timeform rating of 123, Will Take Charge - Eclipse Champion Three Year Old Male in 2013, was ranked 6th along with the likes of recent Epsom Derby winner Australia and Cirrus Des Aigles, and ahead of Wise Dan. Third dam Serena’s Song (by Rahy) won 18 times - 11 of those astoundingly all Gr1 status. Inducted into the racing Hall of Fame, at age four she achieved a Time-form Rating of 126. She went on to continue her success in the breeding paddocks and clearly nicked well with Storm Cat - the broodmare sire of Noble Tune. She produced amongst many Group performers the likes of Gr1 Coronation Stakes winner Sophisticat (Storm Cat) as well as seven-time winner Serena’s Tune, who continued the momentum at stud. It is a family that has produced a number of Bold Black Types including sire Grand Reward. Noble Tune’s own dam - Serena’s Cat – a $1.4-million dollar weanling purchase by Noble Tune’s breeders Dell Ridge Farm, is a 82

Stakes winner and is also the dam of the impressive Honor Code, a flashy dark-bay colt with white front legs, a Gr2 Remsen Stakes winner who placed second in the Gr1 Champagne Stakes. At age two Honor Code’s Timeform Rating given was 118, making him a favourite for the Gr1 Kentucky Derby before injury prevented him running. A year older than that of Honor Code, Noble Tune achieved a head-turning race record, getting four wins from seven starts up to 1800m all on turf. Noble Tune was victorious in the Gr3 Pilgrim Stakes at age two and placed second in the Gr1 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf over 1600m. At age three he won the Gr2 American Stakes over 1800m in devastating fashion. Regarding Noble Tune’s depth of pedigree, Alistair points out that it is making waves throughout the major racing countries of the world. “Close Hatches won her third Gr1 in a row in America on the weekend, she is probably the top filly in America right now and she has the exact same pedigree cross as Noble Tune – not only that but the top three year old sprinting filly in Europe, Rizeena, is very closely related to him - its blood that you just can’t ignore.” Michael McHardy of Rathmor Stud said he was very pleased at being able to secure Noble Tune to stand in South Africa.“We are very excited to have him here and he has everything – pedigree, looks, a great temperament and a top drawer race record. We are also very encouraged by breeders wanting to support him from as far as the Cape and of course those who have attended our stallion day are all equally enthusiastic about him. We have acquired a number of top mares to support him and we look forward to the breeding season ahead.”

SIHLE REACHES FOR A DREAM By Liesl King
To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable wrong To love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star The Impossible dream – By Mitch Leigh and Joe Darien

INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE October 2014
S
ihle Botman had a dream, a dream to become a jockey. On the face of it, it’s certainly not impossible. Sihle has the stature that is required and at 12, that magical age of 14 when he can join the South African Jockey Academy is not too far off. There is just one problem. Sihle is battling a serious, life-threatening illness and has to endure weekly treatments at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Yet like any child, Sihle dreams of what he will be when he grows up and in Sihle’s dreams, he is a jockey riding racehorses.
Champion Jockey Piere Strydom coaching Sihle on horse-riding.
Clearly, what was needed was a fairy godmother and in stepped the Reach For A Dream Foundation ready to assist. The Reach for a Dream Foundation is based on the very successful Make A Wish Foundation in America and was founded by Owen Parnell, with the aim of inspiring hope and fulfilling the dreams of children with life-threatening diseases. Fulfilling a child’s dream sounds easy, a new bike, a Playstation, a Barbie doll. Yet these kids, who may never grow up to live their dreams, often have very different dreams and making them happen takes time and effort.
Sihle’s dream was to ride a racehorse, to become a jockey. Sounds simple enough, but most riders will tell you that learning to ride a horse is something that takes lots of time, usually involves several falls and is always done on something much quieter than a thoroughbred racehorse.
First, the team meets with the chosen child and spends time getting to know them and their dreams. The children are encouraged to Dream Big. After all, isn’t that precisely what fairy godmothers are there for, to help you dream that impossible dream or to reach that faraway star?
Sihle didn’t have the first, couldn’t afford the falls and it had to be a racehorse. Yet no dream is ever considered impossible, it’s a dream after all and the Foundation approached Patrick Davis, Phumelela’s Racing Executive for a solution. Davis thought the best place to start would be James Maree’s Thoroughbred Racing Development Centre, where the horses are at least reasonably quiet and the right gear such as body protectors etc could be found. A former champion jockey himself, Maree was delighted to be involved and now all Davis had to do was to find a jockey to help.
Once a dream has been identified, the team springs into action, firstly the child’s doctor needs to grant permission and the dream needs to be planned and organised.
His first call was to Piere Strydom, one of South Africa’s top jockeys and six-time winner of the SA Jockeys’ Championship, who he jokingly calls “a gentleman jockey” with plenty of time

With everything in place, it was time to fulfil Sihle’s dream. Having just completed his weekly treatment, Sihle made his way to the Thoroughbred Racing Development Centre, where Maree, Davis and Strydom awaited his arrival with eager anticipation. Sihle was kitted out in silks, a skull cap and body protector, while Strydom supplied him with a pair of gloves. Maree helped Sihle mount a gentle horse called Blue Sunday, while Piere got the ride on Mitsatso. It can be a very frightening experience to find yourself so high up off the ground, but Sihle took it all in his stride and soon was able to steer his horse onto the grass track. Strydom showed him how to sit correctly and Sihle even had his first trot! The twelve year old appeared to be a natural on a horse and was very reluctant to dismount when the time came. Handing the borrowed gloves back also appeared to be a no-no and Strydom happily donated them to the young boy. Sihle couldn’t contain his delight at finally having achieved his dream. “I am very happy because my dream of two years finally came true. My dream is to one day become a jockey and I hope to pursue this afterwards.” Often the fulfilment of a dream is also a very special occasion for the parents,

and Nomathemba Botman could not believe her son had just ridden his first horse. “I’m happy to see my son’s eyes beaming. Being here to witness his dream is so worthwhile as I never believed it would happen. Today’s event is the optimism that Sihle needs to keep and remember when his condition tries to knock him down. Above all, I am glad he now knows that nothing is impossible.” To end off what clearly was a very emotional day for Sihle, Strydom presented him with a signed photo of himself winning a race and Maree invited him to visit whenever he wants to ride again. Phumelela’s Racing Executive, Patrick Davis commented in closing: “Phumelela is honoured to be fulfilling this young man’s dream and are thankful to James Maree and Piere Strydom for their input in making this dream a reality. As a company and as a greater horseracing fraternity, we are always willing to offer our help where we can.” “The power of a dream is the faith in things unseen. It is the courage to embrace your fear, no matter where you are, to reach your star and to realise the power of your dream.” The Reach For A Dream Foundation A team of fairy godmothers, a champion jockey, an executive and a former champion jockey turned teacher. Ordinary people, who made it possible for a young boy, not only to dream, but to reach for his star.

legant and famous horse farms border Old Frankfort Pike, but none with the historical distinction that belongs to Airdrie Stud and Woodburn Farm .
The birthplace of the American Thoroughbred industry was Woodburn Farm, land awarded to General Hugh Mercer in 1786 for his service in the Revolutionary War, and purchased in 1790 by Robert Alexander. His son, Robert A. Alexander, founded Woodburn Farm, and set out to breed the finest Thoroughbreds on American soil. And good soil it was, setting atop the Bluegrass region’s famous limestone plateau, rich grazing land blessed with calcium and phosphorus, known to impart superior bone and fine muscle to horses raised on that rolling land. He kept meticulous records of his horses’ matings, and so founded the American Stud Book, the forerunner of the Jockey Club Registry, where all Thoroughbreds pedigrees can be traced. He bred 5 winners of 19th century Kentucky Derbies, and stood the immortal Lexington (1850-1875), a bay horse that for 16 years was America’s leading Sire . In the mid to late 19th century,Woodburn was well known also for the developing the fastest trotting horses in the country, and became the birthplace of the American Standardbred. The picturesque property rolls away on each side of Old Frankfort Pike, with blue-grey horse barns nestled amidst the lush Bluegrass and dry stone fences, these carefully pieced together from local fieldstone, gathered from the fields by slaves and built by Scottish and Irish stonemasons, who brought their craft to Kentucky from the old country. Equally skilled were the former slaves in the area, and records show that much of the building and repair on Airdries’ stone walls was carried out by the Lee family, former slaves that built a solid stonemasonary business locally. trees proliferate throughout the wooded areas on the farm, where to this day numerous deer choose to take shelter on the peaceful acres. Fast forward to 1972, when Brereton Jones and his young wife, Libby, great granddaughter of A.J. Alexander, moved from his native West Virginia to Libby’s family farm, named Airdrie for the Alexander ancestral property in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The Jones’ set about gathering a fine Thoroughbred broodmare band on the land that had grazed no Thoroughbreds since the turn of the century, and in 1975 added an impressive young stallion,Key to the Kingdom, purchased from leading breeder Paul Mellon for the record sum of $730,000. Many notable stallions followed, among them Elocutionist, winner of the Preakness Stakes, Dance Spell, Silver Hawk, Slew City Slew, Indian Charlie, Harlan’s Holiday, Real Quiet and Proud Citizen, to name just a few. Brereton’s political involvment led him to serve as the 50th lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1987-1991, when he accepted the position of the 58th Kentucky Governor, a post he held through 1995, when he ‘retired’ to devote more time to his family and Airdries’ burgeoning horse interests. Over 150 Stakes Winners and earners of over $100,000,000 have been foaled or raised on Airdrie land, an honor roll that includes more than twenty five G1 winners, including the filly, Caressing, winner of the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies, and Proud Spell, winner of the Eclipse Award as the Champion 3 Year Old Filly in America. Modern day Airdrie Stud and the adjacent Woodburn Farm, and four more divisions, sprawl over 2,500 acres. The daily running of the farm operation is capably handled by a very competent team of Mark Cunningham, who arrived from Australia in 1980, Tim Thornton, who joined Airdrie in 1988, and Ben Henley who came from Australia in 2008.

FRONTRUNNERS IN THE BLUEGRASS Right: Lucy Jones, Bret Jones, Brereton & Libby Jones Far Right: Woodburn
The supervision and careful monitoring of the Stallion Division is in the hands of Kelly McDaniel, who’s tenure at Airdrie exceeds 30 years. Raised locally in the adjacent town of Midway, Kelly can usually be counted on to share some of the history of Airdrie and Woodburn, or a story or two about stallions past and present. Following in his fathers’ footsteps, Bret Jones is involved in all aspects of Airdrie’s bloodstock services, from choosing matings to selling seasons. You can find him at the forefront of Airdrie’s sale team. He also handles Airdrie’s advertising campaigns, and serves on the board of The Breeders Cup. The exciting ‘new kid on the block’ in the Stallion Barn is Creative Cause (Giants Causeway x Dream of Summer). With earnings of over $1,030,000, Creative Cause raced in the colors of owner Hans Steinmann, trained by Mike Harrington, earning a nomination for the 2011 Eclipse Award for Champion juvenile, defeating every horse of his crop that he ran against. A G1 Millionaire by a G1 Leading Sire, out of a G1 Millionaire that beat Ashado in the Apple Blossom Stakes, Airdrie has high hopes for Creative Cause in the breeding shed and in the sales ring. Airdries’ other big guns in the breeding shed this season are Haynesfield, Majesticperfection and Include. 2014 has seen a 92

big future for these three, with youngsters by Haynesfield (a $10,000 stud fee) averaging a cool $98,000 in the first two Yearling Sales of the season, the July sale in Lexington, KY, and the Saratoga Sale in New York. Majesticperfection has had 5 yearlings offered, 5 sold, with an average of $136,000, with a star two year old coming out of his first crop, Hebbronville, selected as a 2 year old for $250,000,who won his debut by a colossal 5 lengths for trainer, Lynn Whiting, earning a 84 Beyer Speed Rating. Most recently, on the first day of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the Majesticperfection colt out of Listen to Libby (Indian Charlie) realised a record price of $190,000. Selected by Frankie Brothers for an undisclosed client, this might be the one to watch ! Include consistently sires runners, with over twenty five G1 winners to date, and his 2014 yearlings sold to date (4 offered, 4 sold) averging $111,000. Also standing the 2014 season at Airdrie are Divine Park, Istan and most notably, Proud Citizen, already the sire of two Kentucky Oaks winners that were bred and raised at Airdrie Stud. No visit to the Bluegrass is complete without a tour of the majestic Thoroughbred nurseries, and the team at Airdrie is proud to present their legacy, rooted in history, geared for the future.
