With the Northern Hemisphere slowly awakening from what was, for the most part, a brutally cold and white winter, I’m sure there are many who are looking forward to stretching their legs and taking flight across the racecourses of America and Europe. We will be there to bring you coverage from the top races. The Dubai World Cup is another big highlight in the coming weeks and we look forward to bringing you in-depth coverage in the hard copy and through our online portals and social media pages. NationalYearling Sale graduates have been making their presence felt all around the world. Most recent of the NYS grads to star was unbeaten Equus Champion Vercingetorix, who recently made an impressive winning Dubai debut, and who looks a likely contender for the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free on Dubai World Cup night at the end of March.

Other recent stars to have been sold at the National Sale, include the first two home in the recent Gr1 Investec Cape Derby, Legislate and Captain America, as well as the likes of this season’s brilliant L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate hero, Capetown Noir. The Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale has a long history of uncovering champions – with the likes of Aslan, Heavy Metal, Lady Windermere, Past Master, Princess Victoria,Vercingetorix all having graduated from the National Sale in past years. One past National Sales graduate who has been enjoying a tremendous season, albeit through his progeny, is former Horse Of The Year, Dynasty. The son of Fort Wood has been represented both by Legislate and champion mare Beach Beauty this season, and recently achieved an astonishing feat, when his sons ran 1-2-3-4 in the Gr2 Selangor Cup.

Cape Town Noir Dynasty, whose offspring are always in huge demand, has 23 yearlings on sale. Legislate Last season’s Champion Sire Silvano had a record breaking year in 2012-2013. A truly outstanding sire, Silvano is the sire of recent Dubai winner, and unbeaten Equus Champion, Vercingetorix, amongst numerous other top-class performers. Champion Sires of the

Since the dominant reign of Foveros at the top of the South African sires championship in the 90’s there have been seven different stallions which have been crowned Champion Sire in South Africa. They are namely Fort Wood, Al Mufti, Badger Land, Jallad, Western Winter, Jet Master and most recently Silvano. In this article we look into the statistics behind these champions and some of their most notable achievements in an attempt to ask the question “Who is the greatest South African Champion Sire of the 21st century?”

The Champion Sires title has been dominated over the last decade by Jet Master amassing an incredible six consecutive sires titles, toppled only last year by Silvano. The only other two stallions this century who have won this title more than once are Western Winter and Badger Land.

Jet Master

Jet Master The Sires’ title is decided on the earnings accumulated by each stallion’s runners in that year. At the time of Western Winter’s death in late 2013 he was the country’s leading stallion by earnings, however he has since been passed by Jet Master. The race for all time earnings is tight between these two and now that both stallions have sadly passed on, and with Western Winter having more foals and yearlings to come through the ranks it is likely he may again pass the South African born champ. Only five stallions have yet to break the R100.000.000 barrier in South African earnings (the fifth being National Assembly) however it will not be long before Silvano joins this illustrious company. In the 2012/13 season alone Silvano’s progeny amassed over R20m and so at this rate in two years he will have broken the barrier and moved into fourth place. Add to this the factor of prize-money inflation every year and Silvano may well pass all those in front of him in time.

The earnings figure each year is a product of the number of runners a stallion has multiplied by the average earnings per runner (AEPR) of that stallion. The AEPR figure is therefore an important metric when measuring stallions for it allows you to identify which stallion is producing high-earning horses though they may not have enough runners on the ground to be in the Champion Sires race. Through this comparison Jet Master leads Western Winter, Silvano and Fort Wood. The AEPR index however is more appropriate for measuring stallions during the same time period for the reason I indicated to earlier of prizemoney inflation: prizemoney has increased considerably over the last decade and therefore an older stallion such as Al Mufti will be disadvantaged by such a measure. I will now look at a few measures that are less prejudicial for comparing stallions from different time periods. Fort Wood leads the way having recently passed Jallad at the top of the list for number of winners produced. However it is Western Winter who comes in on top in terms of the highest percentage of winners to runners with over four in every five runners being a winner, just ahead of Fort Wood who produces on average three winners out of every four runners.The winners/runner percentage for a stallion generally increases with time as the winners/runners percentages for two year olds are lower than for older horses. This is particularly the case with the progeny of quality stallions (and all of the above certainly are) which tend to improve with age. For instance, Silvanoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winner/runner percentage at the end of his first crop was 27%, by the end of his second year it was at 48%, and has continued to rise ever since.

The same can be said to be true of the Stakes Winner/Runner percentage (SW%) which will also tend to increase in time. The SW% is one of the most globally regarded measures of stallion brilliance. Stakes races, black-type or “features” as we call them in South Africa, are the races set up for the elite of the horse racing world and they are the races every horse owner and breeder wants to compete in.The majority of stallions will have SW% in the range of 1 to 3% and so it gives you some idea as to the quality of the stallions listed above that they achieve a figure four, five, even six times greater than that. As comparisons Australia’s most expensive stallion, Fastnet Rock, who stands at a fee of $275.000 (over R2.5m) currently clocks in at 8.5% while his older paternal half brother Redoute’s Choice sets the mark at 11.9%. A SW% of 10% as a rule of thumb is considered globally as the mark of a world-class stallion and as we can see Western Winter, Fort Wood, Jet Master and Badger Land have all crossed this threshold, while I would say with some confidence that Silvano will do so in the ensuing years.

Every owner or breeder wants to have horses competing in feature races and so looking at the frequency with which a stallion produces horses that place in Stakes races is also a strong indicator of a stallion’s brilliance. Though the average stallion only produces horses for feature race calibre on occasion these esteemed names do so on a regular basis – Western Winter leading the way with producing a stakes placed horse in every four runners while the other champions on average doing so once in every five. Those are pretty remarkable numbers.

If stakes races are the measures of the elite horses within the sport of horseracing, then Grade 1’s are the mark of greatness. Few stallions are able to produce horses of the calibre to win stakes races and only the very best will produce horses of Grade 1 quality on a regular basis. In South Africa over the last decade Western Winter has led the way producing a Grade 1 placed horse on average once in every thirteen runners. The pinnacle within the sport of horseracing is to win a Grade 1. This is the mark of excellence bestowed upon the country’s most prestigious and high-class races and the horses victorious in them. Western Winter was joined this summer by Jet Master as South Africa’s all-time leading sire by number of Grade 1 winning progeny. Silvano produced five Grade 1 winners in South Africa (and another in Europe) during 2013 and he may well threaten this record in the near future. The win of Yorker’s in the Summer Cup also drew Jet Master level with Western Winter at the top of the table of Grade 1 winners to runners percentage, while In The Fast Lane’s win in the Cape Fillies Guineas pushed him to the top of this table. The two of them amazingly producing on average a Grade 1 winner once in every thirty runners! There are of course other criteria one can use to evaluate stallions – for instance Fort Wood has produced three individual Horse of the Years in Horse Chestnut, Dynasty and Celtic Grove, a feat not matched by his peers. These statistics above also do not include the performances of horses competing abroad, such as Victory Moon for Al Mufti, River Jetez and JJ the Jet Plane for Jet Master or Lucky Speed for Silvano, to name a few. Another factor difficult to account for is the quality of mares a stallion has received, which certainly will influence his statistics. For instance, the fact Western Winter leads the majority of the rankings when measured per runner, may be partly attributed to him receiving smaller and more select groups of mares. It is therefore difficult, if not impossible, to measure which of the above stallions is the best, but rather the data should highlight quite how remarkable these Champion stallions are.

A solid bunch of South African bred second-season sires are not doing too badly either; Rebel King, Jay Peg and Argonautâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest progeny are three-year-olds and are well positioned on the 3yo sire log with earnings of R 1.3 million, R1.1 million and R1 million respectively. Rebel King of course is a son of the now deceased National Emblem, who in his own right was a superb South African bred stallion. Currently his son Shea Shea is flying the flag for South Africa in Dubai, where he won the Meydan Sprint in scintillating style on Super Saturday. His next start in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup Day is eagerly awaited.

It’s no surprise really that South African breeders excel at producing home-grown sires. One just has to go back to the mid1950’s to find South African sires who have left 3 generations of Gr1 winners. In 1962 Danie le Roux’s 3 time winning son of Court Martial, Royal Pardon, unseated the almighty Fairthorne as serial champion sire of 2yo’s. Royal Pardon became the first sire in SA to produce Gr1 winners of his own who in turn sired three generations of Gr1 winners, including his most famous sire-son: Royal Affair (winner of the Queen’s Plate). Royal Affair produced many top performers incl: War Ribbon, Kings Rhapsody, Boland Boy, Amorella, Captain Bell (who also retired to stud and got a really top horse in Young Captain) and also the speedster Flower Power who produced two Gr1 winners: Sweet Chestnut and Pasque Flower. Each of these sires made an impression on the local Stud Book with their daughters as well. 42

So if you are now firmly convinced that local is indeed lekker then head to either the CTS March Yearling Sale or the National Yearling Sale, where all of the above sires are well represented. Captain Al has eight yearlings on the CTS March Sale, and 31 on the National Sale, while Dynasty has two yearlings on the March Sale and 23 on the National Sale. The newcomers to the ranks are also well represented at both Sales. The CTS March Yearling Sale boasts 15 Rebel Kings, 12 Jay Pegs and 6 Argonauts, while there are 4 Rebel Kings, 15 Jay Pegs and 10 Argonauts on the National Sale. Any country needs new genes constantly added to breeding pool and the imported sires certainly have a valuable role to play, but let us not forget that while International is Important, Local is Lekker.

Vercingetorix TRANSFORMATION’S POSTER BOY It all started, as many things do, with a casual conversation on the way home. Donald Mabusela of the Department of Trade and Industry was returning from the ﬁrst Cape Breeders Club prizegiving ceremony for the stud grooms that had completed the Club’s training course. Mabusela remarked that he was very impressed with the training initiatives the Club had embarked upon, but was wondering what comes next?

must admit having just completed the first grooms’ training cycle, with many more to come, “what’s next’ was not quite yet on our agenda, but Mabusela was determined. “You need to start planning for the future. Its not good enough just to train these guys, you need to find a way for them to participate in your industry.” Over a memorable lunch at Avontuur, Mabusela threw down the gauntlet and after some serious brainstorming the concept of the Grooms’ Co-operatives was born. There were sceptics aplenty, but Adrian Todd was tasked with bringing the somewhat “harebrained” scheme, as it had been branded by many, to fruition. Mabusela explained that the DTI would contribute a non repayable amount of R300 000 to each start-up co-operative as seed capital. But how to intergrate the grooms in the thoroughbred breeding industry, that was the thorny issue. After much discussion, it was decided that several Cooperatives would be formed as legal entities, each with between eight and twelve grooms as members. Only grooms who had completed the training program would be eligible as members, further strengthening the training initiative. Each co-operative would then use R200 000 of their start-up cash to buy a weanling or weanlings for resale at the upcoming yearling sales, the rest of the money going to keep and sales expenses. On paper, it was a great idea, but South Africa does not have a thriving weanling market and Todd had to turn to the breeders for help. Explaining the scheme, he requested that they provide him with a list of weanlings that they would consider selling to the co-operatives.

Several farms offered weanlings and on the list provided by Klawervlei Stud was a Silvano colt out of the National Assembly mare National Vixen, called Vercingetorix. National Vixen had produced five foals to date, all winners and her Capatin Al Colt Never Forever had finished a respectable 3rd in the Gr.2 Umkhomazi Stakes. While Silvano was not hugely commercial yet, it was a solid purchase, who should definitely offer a return on his purchase price, or so we thought and Vercingetorix was selected by the Riverside Thoroughbred Grooms’ Co-operative as their first purchase. Vercingetorix’s tongue twister name hailed from a Gallic leader who led a rebellion against the Roman legions overwintering in Gaul and in hindsight, his name was extraordinarily apt. At this stage of his life however, it was just a nuisance and the little colt was simply known as “the Silvano with the funny name”. With three of the Riverside’s Co-op members, including the chairman, Abraham Carelse working at the Barry’s Riverton Stud, Vercingetorix relocated to Riverton. Here he thrived under the expert care of the Co-op members and was duly entered in the 2011 National Yearling Sale. Shortly before the sale, his half brother, Allocation, blitzed to his first victory by an astonishing 7.5 lengths. In the world of thoroughbred sales, timing is everything and in an instant, what was merely a solid purchase, had turned into quite an exciting prospect! As Lot 304, Vercingetorix went through the ring at the National Sale. The Co-op members and a DTI team led by Donald Mabusela were all in attendance, hoping that the colt

would reach a reasonable price. What transpired however, is the stuff of fairytales. As the colt circled the ring, the price kept climbing and climbing with Vercingetorix finally knocked down to none other than Champion Trainer Mike de Kock for a staggering R1.4 million. A solid purchase indeed. There was much delight and with smiles that stretched from ear to ear, the grooms could hardly contain their delight. With a million Rand sale, these humble men, from studfarms in the Bar Valley were suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Interviews, photos and more interviews, their moment in the sun had arrived and their lives would never be quite the same again. For Mabusela, it was proof that given the opportunity, even men with little or no schooling but a wealth of hard-earned knowledge could succeed if just given a helping hand. In keeping with the policy of building a viable business, the Riverside Co-op subsequently plowed their funds back into the industry, purchasing their first mare, a Victory Moon daughter of Shadow Dancing from Klawervlei Stud. In 2011 she produced an Albert Hall filly and in 2012 a smashing Seventh Rock colt. The Co-op also purchased another Silvano colt out of the Russian Fox mare Dacha and a Casey Tibbs half brother to English Garden. Both these yearlings were successfully sold and from the proceeds, a Rebel King weanling joined the Co-op’s thriving business. Once sold, the association with a yearling seldom continues, but in the case of the Silvano with the funny name, the fairytale seemed to have no end.Vercingetorix ended the 2013 season as Champion Three-Year-Old Colt with an unbeaten record that 52

included victories in the Gr.2 KRA Guineas and the Gr.1 Daily News 2000. Back home in BAR Valley, the Co-op members watched each and every race, cheering their champion home. Now for most an Equus Champion Award is the pinnacle of success, but Vercingetorix was far from done. De Kock took the colt on the arduous five months, three continents journey in order to compete in the 2014 Dubai World Cup Carnival. Unfortunately, the colt did not travel well and was very sick on arrival in Dubai. Hence, it was with anticipation and trepidation that the grooms gathered once more around the television to watch Vercingetorix’s first start in Dubai. Even Mike de Kock suspected that the colt may be in need of the run. Vercingetorix however had other ideas. And on the 13th of February under Christophe Soumillon, he comfortably held off the opposition in the $175 000 Ford Taurus Trophy over 1800m at Meydan, firmly keeping his unbeaten record intact. His next start in the $300 000 Group 1 Jebel Hatta(1800m) on Super Saturday was an even easier victory and all that is left now is a start on the richest raceday in the world, the Dubai World Cup on the 29th of March! From a colt with a funny name to an unbeaten champion, Vercingetorix has blazed an extraordinary trail in the lives of a group of stud grooms, proving that from a single idea, a challenge thrown down, anything is possible. Abraham Carelse, Riverside Co-op’s Chairman has the last word: “We are so happy that he is running so well for his new owner” and with a twinkle in his eye he adds, “ we didn’t choose too badly did we?”

UN SALE DY TO RPREMIER REACAPE 2014 YEARLING SALE

A Triumph for the Fairer Sex

he 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale concluded at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Friday night with an aggregate of R103 025 000, an increase of 4.7%, while the average of R572 361 increased by a solid 18.5%. In a surprising upturn for the book, fillies trumped the colts when it came to the sales toppers. Joint top price of R3.2 million was shared between two fillies, Lot 53 and Lot 161 and one colt, Lot 28. In total six fillies sold for over R2 million, with an aggregate of R17.05 million, while the six colts to breach the R2 million mark only achieved an aggregate of R16.5 million. A first for South Africa! Shadwell South Africa’s Angus Gold indicated his intentions early on in Session Two of the Sale when he signed for Lot 114. After being underbidder on several lots during Session

One, a determined Gold had to go to R3 million in order to secure the very smart Dynasty colt out of the Jallad mare Jabulani Jive. “He is one of the nicest colts around and though his female side is a bit light, he is a tremendous athlete with a fantastic temperament. Sheikh Hamdan’s aim is to get a nice horse that can race here, before heading to Dubai and so far it has worked well”, Gold explained. After buying Soft Falling Rain, Equus Champion Two Year Old Colt and winner of the Group 2 Godolphin Mile at the 2011 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, Gold has been a regular visitor. It wasn’t long before one of the talk horses of the sale, Lot 144 entered the ring. A spirited bidding battle ensued, but at R2.5 million it was Jehan Malherbe’s Form Bloodstock who signed for the beautifully bred Distorted Humor(USA) colt out of the A.P Indy mare Ms. Blue Blood(USA). de Kock was delighted to add such an outstanding colt to his string. “I’m not sure we in South Africa understand how good Distorted Humor is and it’s a proper female line. A real international pedigree. You’d pay R. 2.5 million for him any day.” One lot later De Kock had to settle for being the underbidder as Derek Brugman on behalf of Mayfair Speculators matched the R2.5 million, this time for the Var filly Varumba out of Muamba(ARG). Brugman commented that for him it was one of the nicest fillies on the sale and that she will be trained by Vaughan Marshall. Brugman went on to explain that it has become internationally accepted that a good filly can be as good if not better than a good colt. One only has to look at the likes of Black Caviar and Treve, currently leading the international classification and who can forget the brilliant Zenyatta or Arc Queen Danedream?

South Africa now seems to be following this trend with two fillies breaching the R2.5 million mark on day one, including Lot 53, who achieving the highest price ever paid for a yearling filly in South Africa at R3.2 million. Not to be outdone, Goodhope Racing matched that figure when Joey Ramsden went to R3.2 million for Lot 161, a Trippi daughter from the famous Wild Hyacinth family that has produced the likes of globetrotters Victory Moon, Imbongi and Kelly. The colts however did not stand back for the ladies for too long as Michael Robert signed for Lot 164, the Silvano half brother to J & B met runner Punta Arenas at R2 million on behalf of Dennis and Gail Evans. Evans confirmed that the colt is eventually destined to join his horses in Singapore. It may have been a foreign pedigree, but Dennis Drier knows a good horse when he sees one. Chief Bearhart was one of four beautifully bred yearlings imported in utero by Klawervlei Stud, a gamble that certainly paid off. Consigned as Lot 178, Drier had to fight off fierce opposition before the hammer finally came down at R3 million. “Its unbelievalble, I have never bought a horse for that much before, but he is an outstanding individual”, said a visibly relieved Drier.

Klawervlei ended the sale as top vendor with an aggregate of R30.9 million for 40 lots followed by Maine Chance Farms and Highlands Farm Stud. Current Champion Sire Silvano heads the sires list with an aggregate of R13.4 million for 20 lots averaging R670 000, just piping Captain Al, who sold 20 yearlings for R13.225 million. Trippi filled the third spot with a healthy R12.025 million for 16 lots.

Sean Tarry was next in deciding that some foreign blood would not go amiss as he signed for Lot 184, a Distorted Humor(USA) filly out of the A.P Indy mare Seattle Weekend(USA) on behalf of Rainbow Beach Trading. Tarry, who had to go to R3 million to take the filly home, commented that she had a beautiful pedigree and a great walk.

Rainbow Trading tops the buyers list with Chris van Niekerk signing for 11 lots totalling R7 650 000. Mike Bass bought seven lots for R7 425 000, while John Freeman accounted for 15 lots costing R6 700 000. CTS Chief Operating Officer Adrian Todd expressed his delight at the 18.5% increase in the average. “The Cape Premier Yearling Sale is now firmly entrenched on the international sales calendar. The Sale has grown year on year since its inception and the CTS Million Dollar (race) has just added a further incentive for both local and international buyers.”

As the sale drew to a close, it was Form Bloodstock on behalf of Khaya Racing and Angus Gold on behalf of Shadwell South Africa, who had the last say. Form Bloodstock’s Jehan Malherbe crossed swords with Charles Laird over Lot 189, a Silvano colt aptly named Single Sword, before emerging victorious at R2.8 million. While Gold struck another blow for the fairer sex when he went to R2.4 million for Lot 200, a Captain Al filly out of the A. P. Indy mare Super Singer. 60

The Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune have called Fred Stone “the most famous painter of horses in the world”.

is work hangs in the homes of some of the world’s most notable people, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and in the office of the President of the United States. He has been featured on ESPN, CBS, NBC and ABC television. Any print signed by Fred Stone can go up in value as high as into the thousands of dollars. More people own a Fred Stone print than that of any other horse artist in history, making him the most sought after equine artist in the world. His large murals now appear at race tracks, simulcast centers, hotels and casino race books throughout the world including Moscow, Russia, the Chech Republic, Japan, Hong Kong and China. His mural in the Las Vegas Paris Hotel is the largest equine mural in the world at 14’ x 120” in length. Actor and art collector, Jack Klugman wrote “these aren’t just paintings, they are history”. Paul Galloway of the Chicago Tribune said “he is the best there is at capturing the elegance and emotion of the thoroughbred horse”. NPR Sport’s Illustrated author Frank De Ford writes “Fred Stone’s paintings are majestic as they are passionate, the beauty of these great beast and the nobility of their riders ripple across his canvas”. Fred was born in 1930 in St. Louis, but his family moved to Los Angeles in 1933. His father was the head nurse for Columbia Studios for many years, so he grew up on the back lot of a movie studio. Fred recalls, his initial dreams were to be a baseball player and he was quite good, pitching a one-hitter against the St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles) when he was 16 years old. His career however, was cut short by a shoulder injury, which led him down the road to art, which he had shown an inclination for from grade school on. A rather funny incident….in school, he was called in by his teacher for painting nude pictures on his schoolwork. His father was amused, as this was the result of him starting art school at the age of 11, where all were painting nude live models. So he was off the hook. He then went on to graduate from the Art Center School of Art in Los Angeles. Shortly after graduating, he met his wife Norma, who would become his close companion and confidant. Fred admits that he would not have reached such

a level of success without Norma by his side. Fred and Norma had two children, a daughter Laura and a son, Russ. After school, Fred accepted a job as an illustrator. He quickly became frustrated with the endless deadlines and people telling him what to paint, how to paint and in what period of time, he quickly gave it up. After the brief stint as illustrator, Fred started to paint scenic backgrounds for motion pictures and television and then partnered up with his art school instructor and creative genius, Harold Kramer. They went on to create some wonderful murals for many important new building projects in the 1950’s. Fred took a break from art for a number of years, but he just couldn’t keep away and started to play with the idea of painting western art. At that time, his daughter Laura was working for the legendary race horse trainer Charles Whittingham, at the race track in So California and she convinced him to come out to explore her world. Fred was instantly taken in by the majestic horses and the wonderful characters of what he call Racing’s Golden Age and his daughter’s connections allowed him to meet many of them. During this period he admits he was privileged enough to paint the best horses and jockeys of that time. One of him favorites was a painting of NIJINKSY II with LESTER PIGGOTT aboard. He also fell in love with the history of the thoroughbred and did several paintings of the great MAN O’ WAR , as well as depictions of the American Triple Crown through the years. After doing a few commissions, Fred realized that he wasn’t prolific enough and had to find another way to paint these horses and still make a living. About that time, collectibles were becoming popular and he jumped on board. From that point on the business took off. Fred recalls that he has probably produced over 150 limited edition prints and thousands of posters. Many of these editions were sold out immediately upon their release and consequently, today they are becoming valuable collector’s items. Over the past years Fred has written two art books , the first, FRED STONE PAINTS THE SPORT OF KINGS sold out immediately upon release, as it was a limited edition book and it has gone up in 64

Barbaro – I loved his bravery. After BARBARO’s untimely death, I swore to my wife that I would never paint another horse again, but then received letters from all over the world begging me to paint this remarkable horse. I didn’t want to take advantage of a very sad situation, so I subsequently gave most of the money that I earned from this print to the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. They were ones that took care of BARBARO following his accident.

value a great deal from its original price. His second book, REFLECTIONS ON A GOLDEN is not a limited edition and is now in its 3rd printing. Fred shares with us his process, “When I begin a painting, I go to see the horse when possible and then begin to sketch. I do many sketches on tissue before starting the original. My medium is acrylic on board. I am very slow, very particular and detail oriented. Every painting must be my BEST painting and therefore, I will produce only 3 to 4 paintings a year. My studio is a tiny little ex-tack room, 8’ x 10’ in my backyard”. When asked about his favorite piece of all time, Fred says,“I would have to say that over the years, my favorite horse was JOHN HENRY. I painted him 3 times and visited him more times than I can count”. When Fred would go to see his daughter at Whittingham’s barn, he would give carrots to the great mare DAHLIA, visit with the wonderful EXCELLER (whom he also painted) as well as the other stars in the barn. He recalls meeting many of the colorful racehorse owners, such as Nelson Bunker Hunt and Mary Bradley. When asked about influences in style Fred answers, ”Although our painting styles are different, I look to Sir Alfred Munnings for inspiration. I never get tired of looking at his work”. Fred’s most popular picture to date was actually not of a horse. Titled PARTNERS, it is the painting of a Fireman and his rescue dog after the Oklahoma City bombing. Fred has used this painting to raise money for the families of fireman who died on 911. To date, this painting has raised over $500,000 for this charity and others of that ilk. He received a letter of thanks from the President of the United States, George W. Bush, who advised him that the print of Partners was hanging in the White House. Fred is still taking a limited number of commissions and he is still selling some available prints and posters, although his inventory is becoming limited as most of his work has sold out. Thank you.The race worked out very well for me. I jumped out well and managed to get a good position about 5 lengths off the pace. Entering the straight I opted to go for a run down the inside. Cape Town Noir moved up nicely, hit the front around the 200m mark and drew away to win by 1.5 lengths. It was a perfect trouble free race. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUNDWHERE DID IT ALL START AND HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? I started my apprenticeship in 1971 in the SA Jockey’s Academy in Durban. I had already been involved in horses as my mother had a riding school. I have been successful throughout most of my career and have been lucky enough to have been involved with a lot of good trainers and horses in S.A.

I study the form of the other horses in the race and try and work out how the race will be run and who my main dangers will be. I basically try and plan my race. AS A CHAMPION JOCKEY, DO YOU STILL GET NERVOUS BEFORE A RACE?

WHO ARE YOU ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR WHEN YOU ARE ON THE TRACK AND WHY?

I think it depends on the horse I am riding and everyone’s expectations. I am normally very calm as I believe the horse will react badly to nerves.

Good horses. Grade 1 horses come in all shapes and sizes. I always try and ride a lot of work at the track. I look for a good action first, then temperament and ability. Classic Gr 1 horses need all 3.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT?

WHAT IS IN STORE FOR YOU FOR 2014?

I do not try and ride too light anymore and have managed to keep my minimum weight to around 55.5kg which is comfortable for me.

I will be looking to ride more GR1 winners and find future champions in the young horses at the track – the same as I have done throughout my career.

The beautifully-bred Bankable, who entered stud with the National Champion Breeders of South Africa - Summerhill Stud - unfortunately died prematurely and left behind just one crop of foals. The only son of Medicean to come to South Africa at the time, Bankable was out of Dance ToThe Top by Sadler’s Wells (with Irish River and Habitat found in the dam-line as well) and he left approximately 70 foals behind. Described as a stallion with an exemplary manner and temperament and faultless conformation, he weighed a massive 560kg in training and let down quickly into an imposing stallion. Boasting a Timeform Rating of 122, Bankable earned over R20 million in stakes over distances from 1200-1800m and ran

World Champion Raven’s Pass to one length whilst giving him 6lbs. With eight wins (including 4 at Group and Stakes level) and 8 places (including 2 places at Gr1 level), he raced in the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Singapore until the age of seven, proving his toughness and grit for the racetrack.

“We looked for a stallion and Just As Well ticked all the boxes with his excellent race record, conformation and pedigree. Now when I buy mares, I buy them with the intention that their offspring will qualify for the National Sales as well as being able to send them to Just As Well, or JAWS as he is affectionately known.”

Just As Well is an exciting edition to the KZN sire ranks standing at Spring Valley Stud – a Gr1 winner with a bit of an unusual story behind his success, the son of A.P. Indy out of a top damline (Gr1 winner No Matter What by Nureyev), he is closely related to top sires Raven’s Pass and E Dubai.

Greg points out that there is a story behind Just As Well and his success at the track. “Just As Well started his racing career early, just as any other horse would. He injured himself at 3 and his trainer made an unconventional decision and sent him to a farm for two years where he ran in the mountains with other horses and ponies. It clearly did him the world of good - when they sent him back into training at age 6, he began winning his Group races!”

A stallion with a beautiful head bearing a strong resemblance to his famous sire along with a good length of rein, sizable hindquarters and a fantastic temperament to match. Racing internationally over four seasons in USA, Japan and Canada, Just As Well amassed four wins and 13 places over dirt and turf, including a Gr 1 winner of the Northern Dancer Breeder’s Cup Turf Stakes over 2400m and winner of the Gr 3 Arlington Million over 2000m. He placed in five Group races, two of them Gr1. Greg Royden-Turner of Roski Stud, who owns the stallion in partnership with Anton Proctor, emphasises that the first thing that is noticeable about his progeny is the extraordinary amount of good bone in their legs. Greg describes Just As Well’s progeny as being good-looking, correct horses who stamps his babies, in particular with a ‘snip’ marking between their nostrils. 76

The handsome and powerfully built Visionaire also joined the ranks at Summerhill Stud in 2011, interrupting his first American covering season to make the long journey to stand in South Africa. Owned by Barry Irwin’s Team Valor and Summerhill Stud in a partnership, Visionaire is by Grand Slam out of Scarlet Tango by French Deputy. Visionaire’s first crop of horses racing in the USA have got off to a booming start – the stats are more than impressive and he has already had a Black Type win and places from two different horses. Two year old Bacopa Breeze has had three wins, including the Laurel Smart Halo Stakes Listed. Outlook has placed twice in two Listed races – the Santa Rosa Cavonnier Juvenile Listed and Pleasanton Everett Nevin Listed. From another five runners, they have amassed eight wins between them. It appears from Visionaire’s first outstanding American crop to race, his yearlings will be eagerly anticipated. A five-time winner over distances of 1300 - 1700m, Visionaire won the ‘stallion-maker’ Gr 1 King’s Bishop Stakes in goosebump fashion - coming from last and going onto win impressively, leaving the field in his dust. Rated by Timeform at 126, he also won the Gr 3 Gotham and placed in two subsequent Gr3’s - the Risen Star and Northern Dancer Stakes. KZN looks forward to an exciting racing future to come from the progeny of these talented young sires.

his unique race brought the UCT Rag back to the Kenilworth racetrack after a absence of 12 years. The day featured high class thoroughbreds competing for top honours, whilst raising money for SHAWCO, the charity arm of the UCT Rag. “We are thrilled to have the students back on course. This is such an exciting event that has brought the youth back to the track and we hope to build a solid and long lasting relationship with UCT going forward”, said Clyde Basel, Marketing and Sales executive of Phumelela. The theme of the raceday was Great Gatsby and the students certainly dressed to impress with fringes and

feathers aplenty. Scott Fitzgerald’s description of the Roaring Twenties as “something new - something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned” perfectly captured the spirit of the Magnum Mile. On the track, the Magnum Mile, the highlight of the day’s racing was won in nail-biting fashion by the gorgeous grey gelding King Of Pain. And he indeed live up to his name as it looked like the flying Castlethorpe had caught King Of Pain on the line. Anxious minutes followed as the stewards had a good look at the photofinish, while both horses circled around. Luckily for King Of Pain, who has a history of being the perennial bridesmaid, his day had finally arrived and he was proclaimed the winner by a nose.

Regular rider Bernard Fayd’ Herbe was delighted with the victory and the gelding’s gutsy performance, giving him plenty of pats as he was led into the winners enclosure. And if the reaction of the students crowding around the outside was anything to go by, it seems that plenty of ladies had placed a wee bet on the pretty dapple grey.

“I have been eager to put a Varsity raceday together for some time now and it wouldn’t have been achievable without the backing of the sponsor – Magnum Cream Liqueur. I believe this event will become one of the biggest attractions on the racing calendar for years to come”, said Jonathan Snaith, the spokesperson for the Magnum Mile.

Off the race track, students vied for the Best Dressed Award in the fashion stakes and after some stiff competition, two new champions, albeit of the two legged kind emerged. The charity element was equally important on the day, with the sponsor of each race generously donating R15 000 each towards SHAWCO.

The Varsity Paddock venue had a wonderful atmosphere during the day, with students eager to try and spot that elusive winner. And the party did not end there, with the students partying long into the night to the sounds of Gangs of Ballet, DJ Ready D and Dean Fuel.

ast year, this prominent stallion was ranked 5th best sire by earnings and was the top sire on the Average Earnings Index. A son of Danzig and the Rubiano mare, Starry Dreamer, War Front has inherited Northern Dancer’s potent hindquarters, powerful forearms and short, flat cannon bones.The bay stallion has a promising future as a sire of sires because most of his progeny possess similar conformation. War Front was a successful racehorse in his own right. Like many of his top runners, War Front enjoyed a fruitful career at shorter distances. At three, he began to build his résumé by winning a maiden special weight by 11 ½ lengths at Saratoga, a Belmont Park allowance by six lengths, and the Princelet Stakes with an eight-length score. However, he truly realized his potential as a 4-year-old. War Front stepped into North America’s top class of sprinters by winning the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes (GII) and finishing second in two GI races. Standing at the legendary Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, War Front has 6 GIWs, 17 GSWs, and 28 SWs to his credit. His North American progeny includes the classy miler Data Link who now stands at stud alongside him and multiple Grade 1-winning, track-record setter The Factor standing at Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, KY. War Front’s accomplishments as a sire have grown to an international level. Abroad, War Front had another strong miler in Sweet Orange, who won the 2012 Hong Kong Classic Mile. In 2013, two War Front sons won at Royal Ascot – Declaration

of War took the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr. I) and War Command triumphed in the Coventry Stakes (Gr. II) by six lengths. These two colts would go on to be major forces in their divisions: War Command went unbeaten as a juvenile and Declaration of War ended his season with a remarkable third-place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI). Also during the Breeders’ Cup, a War Front son, Giovanni Boldini, placed second in the Juvenile Turf (GI). This success translates fashionably into the Thoroughbred sales industry. Last year, the big buyers flocked to War Front progeny during North America’s auction season. At the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, two hips by War Front sold for seven figures. The latter of the pair, Hip No. 712, was the sale topper at $2.5 million. Coolmore Stud interests submitted the winning bids on both colts. GIOVANNI BOLDINI North American-bred Giovanni Boldini has proven himself

as a top-tier juvenile colt for Coolmore Stud. Out of four starts, he has won twice, placed once, and finished third on one occasion. Both his wins came on Dundalk’s all-weather surface with a combined winning margin of 6 ½ lengths. In his penultimate start, the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (Gr. I), he finished third to Toormore, the top-rated juvenile in Europe. In his season finale, Giovanni Boldini truly realized his potential in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (GI) on Santa Anita’s hard turf course. He carried the hopes of becoming Coolmore’s second consecutive winner of the Juvenile Turf. However, his career-best effort could not continue this streak: he would finish as a strong runner-up to Outstrip. After the break, Giovanni Boldini found his position in fourth behind Bobby’s Kitten’s quick pace through the half mile. Ryan Moore aboard the War Front son urged his mount earlier than handicappers had anticipated. Giovanni Boldini

surged up to second and wrestled for the lead coming into the straight. He got the advantage at the sixteenth pole and seemed a certain winner. In the closing strides, Outstrip with jockey Mike Smith aboard rushed up and challenged Giovanni Boldini’s abilities. The leading bay fought on willingly but could not hold off his Godolphin adversary. Outstrip was first to the wire by ½ length with a time of 1:33.20. After this remarkable performance, Giovanni Boldini was among the 12 European-based racehorses nominated for the North American Triple Crown series. WAR COMMAND As the winner of the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr. I), War Command demands attention among his three-year-old peers. training empire in Ireland and has been ridden in all but one start by Joseph O’Brien. The bay colt presents a record of remarkable experience as a juvenile: five starts, four wins, and one third-best finish. He has proven capable of performing in less-than-ideal conditions, having won on softer ground. In early June, trainer Aidan O’Brien sent out War Command for his career debut at Leopardstown and the promising bay won the seven furlong race by a neck over his nine rivals. Just eleven days later, War Command took a massive step up into Royal Ascot’s six furlong Coventry Stakes. He was held up in the back of the fifteen horse field throughout the early going, but took the lead into the final furlong, and drew away to win by six lengths over Parbold. After winning the Coventry, War Command returned to Ireland as an emerging force. His next outing came a month later in the Curragh’s Phoenix Stakes (Gr. I). The War Front son went to the post as the favorite in the betting, but finished third in the five horse contest. Only one length separated him from the victorious Sudirman. War Command experienced another quick turnaround for his following start in the Futurity Stakes (Gr. II). As the favorite in the betting, the brawny juvenile returned to the Curragh for this seven furlong trial that would be contested on good footing. He gained the lead into the final furlong; the eventual winner by three lengths over Mustajeeb.

He returned to England to close out his year in Newmarket’s Future Champions’ Day feature race – the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr. I). In this premier race, War Command faced the unknown when the turf was rated as ‘good to soft’. His calm and professional start set the tone for his performance. Without restraint, he settled effortlessly off the pace and eventually found a clear position to the outside. As the race progressed, War Command became less comfortable with the heavy surface; nevertheless, he responded to O’Brien’s urging with a solid kick. With a furlong to the wire, the colt got a hold of the lead and kept his adversaries at bay. Though he finished only 1 ¼ lengths ahead of his nearest challenger, his victory had been hampered by the soft going and he certainly showed himself to be the classiest horse in the race. As the third-highest ranked juvenile in the European Thoroughbred Rankings, War Command is poised to be a top-class three-year-old in 2014. “War Command, so far, has wintered well.” Breeder and majority owner, Joseph Allen, stated. “As of now, he is being pointed toward the 2000 Guineas without a prep. This, of course, is subject to change depending on health and conditioning.” Regarding where the colt would be pointed later in the season, Allen said, “His future races will be planned after the 2000 Guineas and at some point, I expect, he will be tried at longer distances.”

aving grown up around horses in Zimbabwe and with trainer Brian Muscutt as a close family friend, it came as no surprise when Brett Crawford decided to join Muscutt’s yard shortly after leaving school. Crawford however was on a mission to learn as much as he could and in 1989 he left for Johannesburg, where he got a job with the then fledgling trainer, Mike De Kock. A yearning for Cape Town however, saw him packing his bags again and stints under Muscutt jnr, Sands and Drier followed. Then came an offer he simply could not refuse, taking Crawford back to his beloved Cape Town, this time as Sabine Plattner’s private trainer. Crawford takes up the story. “It was fantastic to work in a facility of such high standards. Having your own grass and own Polytrack makes a huge difference. I also got to travel. We went to Brazil, Argentina and Australia to look at horses and when you travel, you learn. It was a great as a young trainer to experience that. I was with Mrs Plattner for 8 years and during that time, we had seven Grade 1 winners. We did well, but

after a while, it was time for a change. I had worked for several good trainers and you get to learn a little bit of old school new school like that. I had had an ecellent grounding and it was finally time to make a go of it on my own. “In October 2010, I started with a string of Ready To Run horses that were given to me by Lionel Cohen to prepare. It was good in a way that I had 30 horses, but at the end of the day, they were all going to be sold. Luckily, I got good support shortly afterwards from clients such as Mary Slack, who gave me my first horse and Ian Longmore, both of whom are still with me today.” Crawford may have some high-powered clients, but it is his innovative idea of the Tractor syndicates that has everyone talking. “The one thing we have tried to do in Crawford Racing is to make racing accessible to as many people as possible.There is a big market for such syndicates. Especially for the younger guys. Those fun syndicates have all got twenty to twenty-five people in them. It gives everybody a chance of a bit of fun at a minimal cost.

Have suitcase will travel, preferably to the sea! Meet Jackson’s trainer Brett Crawford. Little is generally known about the very private, softly spoken and reserved man, who heads Crawford Racing. Intrigued, I travelled to the tranquil surroundings of the bottom stables at Philippi to find out more.

“The Green Tractor was the first syndicated horse, followed by Red Tractor, who has won two, with the highlight being his victory on L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate day. Luckily, almost all the members were there including our overseas clients, it was fantastic. Blue Tractor is a two-year-old and he is owned by 20 members, while the Pink Tractor is owned by 22 ladies. Each horse gets nominated a drink, and when the horse runs, you have to celebrate with his drink. “ Crawford Racing has just completed an excellent Cape Season. With 21 Feature race winners, a 19% win rate and a 79% place rate, there is much to celebrate. Crawford explains, however that it wasn’t always moonshine and roses. “After the RTR horses departed, we went through a lull as we had to build up a string. The first season that we raced under Crawford Racing, we only had three winners. I was however very fortunate that during my second season, I had my first Graded winner when Polar Bound won the Gr.2 Peninsula Handicap.

Shortly thereafter Thunder Dance won the Gr.1 Paddock Stakes, becoming Crawford Racing’s first Grade 1 winner. That same day Jackson won the Listed Politician Stakes. Jackson then went on to add the Gr. 1 Derby, the Gr. 1 Daily News and the Gr.1 Champions Cup to his repertoire, while Thunder Dance won the Gr. 1 Horse Chestnut Stakes. And this season Elusive Gold won the Cape Guineas, our sixth Grade 1 in four years. At the moment we have 72 horses in training. I try not to keep horses that I feel are going to struggle. I am quite ruthless that way. I expect the horses to perform or to move to a centre where they can perform. “ Like many Capetonians, Crawford firmly believes in the power of the sea, the sand and the waves. For those in the know, Muizenberg beach on a Friday morning is the place to be. “My beach outings come from my Plattner days where I trained on the beach. I think it is a great tool. Its very good for their minds and for their limbs. That cold water does wonders for them. For me its really good for them to get out, to have change of environment March 2014 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

type of horse than a speed horse and if you look at the horses in the yard, they will come across as a bit rangier and scopier and stand over more ground.”

Another trademark of Crawford Racing is their impeccably turned out grooms.“I think its important to give a good image of your yard and of your staff. We dress up in this industry and it follows that the grooms should dress up as well. When we started Crawford Racing, our whole image was behind the name. I have a Scottish heritage and they are dressed in the family tartan. It gives you a stamp and indentifies you.You don’t have to look at the racecard to know it’s a Crawford horse and the grooms love dressing up for the occasion.”

Jackson and new stars Captain America and Futura are prime examples. “Jackson was just the perfect racehorse. He is the first horse that I have been associated with that has been able to go back to the stallion ranks and I really look forward to seeing him standing next to his father and buying his babies. Captain America leaves for Durban towards the end of March. The Daily News is his main mission and obviously, if it all goes according to plan then we might have a crack at the July.We are really looking forward to a good season with him. Futura has done nothing wrong and he just keeps on improving. I am sure we will see him in some of the Durban features.”

With three strings to work every morning its all hands on deck. Crawford’s team consists of 34 grooms, three head lads, assistant trainer Barry Donnelly and stable jockey Glenn Hatt of whom Crawford speaks highly.“He is just a pleasure to work with. He has great judgement when it comes to morning work and he really brings the best out in the horses. In summer we start a bit earlier, pulling out at about 5.45am. I generally do fast work two to three times a week. Wednesday is a quiet day, Friday is beach day and Sunday is a day off. As the sand tracks don’t have an artificial base, we keep horses a lot sounder here in Philippi. The only thing we do cry about here is our access to grass.You really need it to get a young horse educated. “I am slower with my two year olds than most. A horse only matures fully at five, so I try to give them as much time as possible before we put major pressure on. I tend to choose a more classic 94

and a day off. We generally hire a truck and take anything from 13 to 15 horses. It is definitely a vital part of my training program and the horses absolutely love it.”

In closing, Crawford explains his goals. “You must keep progressing and making yourself a better trainer. That comes through hard work, dedication and opportunities. We don’t have the numbers that other trainers have, hence our goals are simpler. We try to better our strike rate every season and to get our average earnings per runner to be the highest in the country. At the end of the day it is your owners that you have to look after and keep happy. Long term everybody wants to be a champion but for me it’s more about training champions.” With stable star Jackson considered good enough to be retired to stud alongside his father Dynasty and with newcomers such as Captain America and Futura setting the tracks alight, Crawford seems to be doing just that!

When St Nicholas Abbey went away after his 2YO season he did so unbeaten in three starts and the brains at Ballydoyle must have been well-pleased . Such was the impression he created winning the G2 Beresford Stakes over a mile at the Curragh that Tony Morris afforded him an article in the Racing Post. He wrote “I have to regard him as a serious horse” and went on to suggest that the son of Montjeu would be even better over the Derby trip. Three weeks after those words appeared St Nicholas Abbey won the G1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, beating Elusive Pimpernel by almost four lengths.

e next started in The Guineas at Newmarket in May of 2010. It was no surprise that he was sent out as odds on favourite but he disappointed finishing sixth, some three and a half lengths behind Makfi. St Nicholas Abbey did not race again as a three year old and had to wait until the following year to prove that Morris had made no mistake in his assessment of the colt. On Derby Day 2011, St Nicholas Abbey made the testing Epsom course his own when he beat Midday by a length in the G1 Coronation Cup over a mile and a half. In November that year he and Jospeh O’Brien went to Churchill Downs and captured the Breeder’s Cup Turf Classic. Young O’Brien described that victory as “very special” as it was his first major win on the world stage. In 2012 after finishing a close second to Cirrus Des Aigles

in the Dubai Sheema Classic at the Meydan,St Nicholas Abbey once again won the G1 Coronation Cup. At the Breeder’s Cup meeting at Santa Anita he was third behind Little Mike in the Turf Classic. In an age when good colts seem to disappear from the tracks too soon, St Nicholas Abbey bucked the trend racing on in 2013 when he just seemed to get better and better. He won the Sheema Classic at the Meydan in what Jospeh O’Brien described as “possibly his best ever performance”. Then he went back to Epsom and beat Duneden by almost four lengths in what was a hat trick of Coronation Cup victories. In July St Nicholas Abbey fractured his pastern while training at Ballydoyle. 20 screws were inserted into the leg during lifesaving surgery at Fethard Equine hospital in Ireland under the guidance of Dr Dean Richardson, the American orthopaedic March 2014 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

specialist from Pennsylvania. Within days he required further surgery for colic and the following month was subjected to another anaesthetic when one of the weight-bearing steel pins supporting his cannon bone broke. Although reports from Coolmore remained positive, St Nicholas Abbey developed laminitis in October. By New Year the news was good – there was new hoof growth and his demeanour remained excellent. On Tuesday 14 January St Nicholas Abbey finally lost his gallant fight after suffering an inoperable strangulating colon torsion. He was euthenazed and is buried in the Coolmore cemetery.

Unfortunately in most instances the only course of action is euthenazia because of the difficulties veterinarians face when trying to treat such injuries. Research has shown that the surface on which the animals train and race plays a major role in determining breakdown rates amongst thoroughbreds around the world. Statistics on dirt are worst with modern polytrack surfaces having the best data. Turf tracks are somewhere in between. Deaths per hundred runners vary from country to country but this may have as much to do with accurate data collection as anything else.

With earnings of just shy of 5 million GBP, St Nicholas Abbey is the most successful horse to have been trained at Ballydoyle. He won 9 of 21 starts, six of them at Group 1 level and was only unplaced on three occasions. His fighting spirit was no more evident than in his battle to survive the unfortunate injury. Unfortunately in the end the odds were just too heavily stacked against him.

In the United States, the match race was for many years a favoured way of testing two champions. It’s a brutal test of heart with the loser having nowhere to hide. Over the years some famous match races took place. In 1920 Man o’War beat Sir Barton and in 1938 the people’s horse Seabiscuit beat War Admiral by 4 lengths at Pimlico. In 1955 Nashua had revenge over Kentucky Derby winner Swaps in a match race in Chicago. Then in 1975 the outstanding unbeaten filly Ruffian took on Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure in a televised match race at Belmont Park. Ruffian began to edge away from the colt when disaster struck and the filly broke down. It took Jacinto Vasquez what seemed like an age to pull her up which further exacerbated her injuries. She was moved from the track for treatment at an equine hospital nearby where it took time to stabilise her for surgery. Later, as she recovered from the

There is a moment of suspension when all four feet are off the ground, followed by impact with the surface by one of the leading forelegs. This means that a substantial force is exerted upon the leading leg with each stride galloped. Given the relatively fine structure of the bones of the equine foreleg, it is not surprising that catastrophic breakdowns do take place.

anaesthetic she became unmanageable, undoing all the recent repairs and generating new injuries. The decision was made to put her down. Ruffian is buried in the Belmont infield, under the New York Racing Association flagpole, her nose facing the finish line. On the first Saturday in May in 2006 on either side of the Atlantic two colts raced into the annals of history. At Newmarket, George Washington romped home by two and a half lengths to win the 2000 Guineas. The son of Danehill, out of the Alysheba mare Bordighera was trained at Ballydoyle by Aiden O’Brien for Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, later owners of St Nicholas Abbey. He was bred by Roy and Gretchen Jackson’s Lael Stables. About six hours later, Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby by six and a half lengths. The son of Dynaformer was trained by former Olympic show jumper Michael Matz for Roy and Gretchen Jackson who had also bred the colt. Such was the superiority of his performance at Churchill Downs that Barbaro was immediately touted as the next Triple Crown certainty. At the Preakness, after a false start he was reloaded only to suffer a catastrophic breakdown of the off hind just after the start and in front of the packed grandstand. He was moved to New Bolton Medical centre and into the care of Dr Dean Richardson. He underwent surgery where

20 screws were used to reconstruct the leg. Barbaro was put into a sling, and a rubber raft in a warm waterpool was used for his recovery from the anaesthetic. There was a major setback in July when he developed severe laminitis in the near hind and much of the hoof was resected but by the end of September he was enjoying time outside being handwalked to graze in the sun. The outpouring of support from the American public was unprecedented as they willed Barbaro to survive. Despite new hoof growth Barbaro developed laminitis in both front feet and on January 29 2007 he was put down. George Washington went on to win the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in 2006 after being second in the G1 Irish Guineas. He failed on the dirt in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and was retired to stud. In March 2007 Coolmore suspended his stud career because of fertility issues and he was returned to Ballydoyle. Minor placings in the Eclipse Stakes and Prix Du Moulin set the scene for another tilt at the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Monmouth Park. “Gorgeous George” as his fans called him, fractured his off fore cannon bone and both sesamoids in the race and was destroyed on the track. Like Go For Wand at Belmont Park, Eight Belles finishing second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Rabiya during the 2005 Durban July, the injuries suffered by George Washington were such that veterinary intervention was impossible. There was no chance to save him.

When Victory Moon returned to South Africa for the 2005 breeding season he retired to Maine Chance Farms in Robertson. His Dubai form had been outstanding and had seen him named Dubai Horse Of The Year in 2004. Just before the start of the 2009 breeding season, Victory Moon fractured a hind leg in his stall in the early hours of the morning. Stud manager John Slade said that the injury was “consistent with horses getting up from the floor of their barns.” He was taken for x-rays and surgery was attempted but a piece of bone was missing which made the insertion of a plate and screws unviable. He was put down. Before his death he sired 320 foals, 146 of them winners including the G1 winning filly Princess Victoria and also War Horse, Polar Moon and Hidden Beauty. There are horses more fortunate than he and the ill-fated St Nicholas Abbey. The movie Something to Brighten The Morning tells the story of the American-bred Mill Reef. He was a small bay colt and was sent to England to Ian Balding at Kingsclere near Lambourne. In all he won 12 of 14 starts, including The Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at three and the Prix Ganay and Coronation Cup as a 4YO. Then, preparing for the autumn season he broke down during a routine training gallop.Surgery was performed at Balding’s yard where a steel plate and three screws were used to pin the broken bone together. He recovered and moved to the National Stud. He was Champion Sire twice being especially important in passing stamina on. He was put down aged 18 100 INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE March 2014

as the result of an incurable heart condition. Nureyev was foaled in 1977. A son of Northern Dancer out of the outstanding mare Special (who also gave Fairy Bridge, dam of Sadler’s Wells) he was bought by Stavros Niarchos for 1.3 Million USD at Keeneland. He only started three times and was first past the winning post each time, but caused great consternation in his third and final race at Newmarket when he became the first horse ever to be disqualified in the 178 year history of the 2000 Guineas. At stud he will be best remembered as sire of the great mare Miesque, but he also gave Peintre Celebre, Spinning World and Soviet Star to name but a few. In 1987 Nureyev shattered his off-hind leg in a paddock accident. He underwent surgery and four screws were used to pin the bone together. Nureyev survived five months in a special sling, returning to the breeding shed in time for the 1988 season. He died aged 24 at Walmac International in Lexington. Over the years, racing has provided some dramatic photographic footage, but few pictures are quite so touching as the one taken of Chris Antley and Charismatic at the finish of the Belmont Stakes in 1999. The chestnut colt was an unlikely Triple Crown contender, having run with a claiming tag in February 1999. Nevertheless he arrived at Belmont Park on the cusp of Triple Crown glory, having won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Charismatic looked a sure winner a furlong from the line then he faded badly, beaten into third

by Lemon Drop Kid and Vision and Verse. Just before the line Antley felt his mount bob, sensing a problem he tried to pull him up. Fifty metres further on Antley bailed, rolling as he hit the dirt. As he got up he took Charismatic’s injured near foreleg and held it off the ground until course veterinarians arrived, a splint was immediately fitted. The following day Charismatic underwent surgery and four screws were used to repair the canon bone. He recovered and in 2002 was shipped to Japan where he still stands at stud. The son of Summer Squall was given a second chance but sadly Chris Antley was less fortunate. After struggling with addiction problems, he died as a result of a drug overdose in December 2000. Kapil, a son of Jallad out of the Blechingley mare Outstanding Star won his first two starts as a two year old before fracturing his off-hind during a routine workout. X-rays revealed an undisplaced longitudinal fracture of the pastern. The owners decided to operate and the leg was pinned. Kapil then faced 10 weeks of stable rest to allow the injury to heal. He turned out to be an excellent patient and enjoyed regular visits from the physiotherapist to help keep him supple. Eventually eight months later Kapil turned up at Kenilworth for a Graduation Plate over 1200m. There was not a dry eye on course when he returned the winner, even the attending veterinarian was on hand to wipe away a tear. Kapil went on to win 7 of 25 starts and finished second to Pocket Power in the G1 Gold Challenge and the G1 Queen’s Plate. This,

after a disappointing year away in Dubai, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. Mariah’s Storm, dam of Giant’s Causeway and the inspiration for the movie Dreamer, is another who raced on after a fracture. Western Winter recovered from surgery for a split cannon bone before retiring to stud while Fort Wood survived a sesamoid fracture that signified the end of his racing career and went on to an outstanding stud career at Mauritzfontein. Even though there are numerous stories with happy endings, in truth they are reserved for those good enough to be saved. The costs involved in treatment are huge and the possible hazards so numerous that for most horses, humane euthenazia is the kindest and most reasonable option. Those animals unlucky enough to suffer catastrophic injury requiring complete reconstruction of the limb with many screws and plates face a recovery period littered with pitfalls and hurdles. While modern surgical techniques have certainly tilted the odds in their favour, St Nicholas Abbey and Barbaro are testament to the difficulty faced under such circumstances. Equine physiology is stretched to its limits when faced with the obstacles that surgery and recovery present. Prognosis improves in cases where the fracture is less complex but even then the spectre of sepsis, colic and laminitis are ever present. For owners, trainers, grooms and veterinarians alike the decisions are tough ones. But then who ever said that racing was for the feint-hearted?

CLAIBORNE FARM MORE THAN A LEGEND Secretariat. Big Red.

If there’s one household name in Thoroughbred racing worldwide, it’s Secretariat. When the big red horse won the Belmont Stakes by a whopping thirty one lengths, and in doing so, garnering racing’s Triple Crown, he would forever put himself and the place of his international fame, Claiborne Farm, on the map.

prawling over 3000 acres in picturesque Paris, Kentucky, Claiborne Farm and four generations of Hancocks have heavily influenced Thoroughbred breeding since Arthur B. Hancock established the farm in 1910.

He subscribed to the theory of importing fast European stallions, and brought to Kentucky, Sir Gallahad 111 and Blenheim 11, who in turn sired Triple Crown winners Whirlaway and Gallant Fox. He was credited with being the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;most influential breeder in the History of the Turf â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;, and established a legacy to pass on for many generations.

His son, Arthur B. (Bull) Hancock, Jr, continued to develop deep broodmare families, and imported Nasrullah, who led the Leading Sire List five times, siring Bold Ruler who sired the immortal Secretariat.

April 6, 1954 marked a notable day for Claiborne when the two mares, Miss Disco, in foal to Nasrullah , and Knightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Daughter, in foal to Princequillo gave birth that morning to colts, Bold Ruler and Round Table, who were both crowned Horse of the Year in 1957 and 1958 respectively. Claiborne Farm was established when Thoroughbred nurseries of the region were working farms without much adornment or fancy structures. 100 years of history and the solid stone pillars and school bus yellow trimmed buildings have remained much the same, but the history books have been updated many times. Bull Hancock believed in building families. He developed lasting relationships with his clients and their families, carefully nurturing a high quality broodmare band. His children

participated in all aspects of farm life, working alongside farm personnel that can count three or four generations of living and working on Claiborne soil. Bull died in 1972, and the younger son, Seth took the helm, while older brother Arthur 111 took over Stone Farm to foster his own operation. Their sister, Dell joined Seth in the operation of Claiborne. When Seth was just 23 in 1972, he syndicated the strapping chestnut son of Bold Ruler and Something Royal for a record six million dollars, before the colt had ever had his first start. Carrying the blue and white silks of Penny Chenery, the Big Red Machine was unstoppable. Winning sixteen of twenty one starts (thrice second and once third ) he was awarded Champion Two Year Old and Champion Three Year Old, and March 2014 INTERNATIONAL RACEHORSE

Horse of the Year, amassing $1,316,808 in earnings. Retired to stand at stud at Claiborne following his racing career, Secretariat died in 1989. His stall plate still adorns his stall in the barn, and countless visitors came to see the big chestnut. Sire power at Claiborne knows no bounds. Mr. Prospector established a strong family line of outstanding runners, among the Gulch, Forty Niner, Rhythm, Seeking the Gold and Aldebaran. Known for their speed and precocity, they in turn have passed this on to their progeny, and their daughters have begun to dominate the broodmare ranks. Buried in the unpretentious cemetery behind the stone office, bounded by stone walls with simple headstones giving their names and lifespan, are Claiborne stallions that read like a Who’s Who in Horsedom: Ambiorix, Blenheim 11, Bold Ruler, Buckpasser, Double Jay, Gallant Fox, Hoist The Flag, Mr. Prospector, Nasrullah, Nijinsky 11, Princequillo, Pulpit, Riva Ridge, Round Table, Secretariat, Swale, and War Cloud. Across the road at the Marchmont division, are buried Conquiestador Cielo, Damascus, Danzig, Easy Goer, Moccasin, Sir Gallahad, Sir Ivor, Tom Rolfe and Unbridled. Swale became the first Claiborne raised Derby winner in 1984,also winning the Belmont and tragically dying just eight 106 INTERNATIONAL RACE HORSE March 2014

days later. A custom made casket was constructed for his internment. Arthur and Stone Farm raised Gato del Sol,who won the Derby in 1982. Claiborne has stood at stud the Leading Sire of the Year out of 27 years. First year stallion Orb, winner of the Kentucky Derby , the Florida Derby and the Fountain of Youth Stakes in 2013, stands alongside nine other Claiborne stallions. Bred and raised on the farm, he is by Malibu Moon out of Lady Liberty by the Claiborne stallion, Unbridled. War Front represents Claiborne stallion Danzig, and is perhaps the last internationally influential sire by Danzig. Winner of the Hong Kong Mile, War Front has proven he can sire speed. With his sons War Command, Departing, Declaration of War and Lines of War making their mark, he shows stallion power to be reckoned with. In 2013, thirty five of his yearlings brought a cool $14, 057,000. Claiborne and it’s families are about to embark on their second 100 years. Raising racehorses and upholding Arthur B. Hancock’s motto “Doing the usual unusually well “.
