LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

elcome to another edition of Sporting Horse Magazine. It is fast approaching that time of year when free weekends are a thing of the past. As the pace increases rushing towards December, those extra hours of daylight really come in handy. Sporting Horse Magazine’s Facebook page is approaching the 500 000 follower mark and with regular weekly reach of over 1 Mil, it has taken on a life of its own. Advertisers in this hard copy will by now know that, they get the added benefit of this enormous population, through shares to this page. If you want to make use of this and our other electronic advertising options please do so via e-mail, info@ silvermane.co.za. We at Silvermane Media are involved with many equestrian disciplines outside of what is featured in Sporting Horse Magazine, getting to see all aspects of the Equestrian Field across the world has always left me with great appreciation of how versatile horses truly are and how vastly different each individual discipline’s approach is toward training. The common thread remains though, a deep love and passion for these equine athletes. Onward... We build up, to what was and still is, South Africa’s Premier Show Jumping Championships, the 2015 Galencia Property Derby, on page 12. Good luck to all competing and caring for all animals during this very long event. Looking forward to seeing you all there. This is traditionally our Stallion Edition and Frances Cheboub takes a look at what is available to South Africans as far as Standing Stallions on page 23. Our second instalment of Namibian Warmbloods is on page 75. Yvonne Bolton profiles rider, Jonathan Clarke on page 46, and our equine profile on Felix van de Mispelaere on page 50. From the Pela Graca Diamond Show, the SAWHS Breed Show and Divine Dressage at Mistico Equestrian Centre, to Connemara Conversation and more, I hope you have a fun time reading what we have put together for you this round. See you around the arena.

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN DERBY

A

s the 2015 Galencia Property South African Derby approaches, plans get underway for one of the most prominent and eagerly anticipated events on the equestrian calendar. Riders, enthusiasts, friends and family come together from around the country to celebrate the sport, while enjoying the finest in food, music, fashion and parties. This year’s Derby is expected to be the biggest and best yet as we celebrate a true milestone in South African show jumping: The 50th Anniversary of the Derby. Last year, Kyalami Park Club hosted one of the greatest events South African equestrian entertainment has ever seen, attended by over 5 000 people. This year, with Galencia Property proudly onboard once again as the headline sponsor, the event, the competition, the glitz and the glamour are set to be more spectacular than ever. Guests will have the option of general access grandstand seats, or the choice of three different tented VIP ticket options, complete with live entertainment and cuisine.

The highlight of the 5-day event is the Galencia Property South African Derby on Sunday 4th October. The Galencia Property South African Derby has become known for bringing together some of the world’s top players in show jumping. The 2014 Derby boasted top international show jumping commentator Philippe Le Jeune Jnr, as well as top local course designer, Kate Launder. Show jumpers from around the country work the circuit all year to qualify for this competition, one of the toughest courses in South African show jumping. The 18-obstacle, 1200m-course was won for the 3rd year in a row by Nicole Horwood in 2014. Riders like Nicola Sime-Riley and Lorette Knowles-Taylor come together to battle it out for the most prestigious show jumping title in South Africa. Young riders work their entire careers for an opportunity to show off their skills, and their steeds, at the South African Derby. As we come together to celebrate 50 years of history, this year’s theme for Derby is The Midas Touch. Half a century since its inception, the 2015 celebration of this distinguished event is set to be a weekend of entertainment, fashion, food and wine, all in gold. Issue 24 SPORTING HORSE

he breeding season for 2015/16 is under way and here you will find a list of the South African Warmblood Horse Societies member’s Fully Licensed Stallions.

There is a full reference list of foundation and young stallions to be found on the www.southafricanwarmbloodhorses.com. Our breeding depth with regards to blood lines now available in South Africa grows exponentially. Stallions that can be used directly by the public, to mention a few, such as Always One R now exhibits consistently good show jumper progeny; Berlioz des Hauts Bois with the only Nabab de Reve blood presently here has reached the Open classes and his young stock jump; Beach Haven On Track is throwing interesting young stock; Cheveyo II is new on the scene with good C-line blood; the Brandenburg stallions Clarinius and Colbert both jumped open and between them have top popular bloodlines; Dageraad Ubbe is an imposing stamp of stallion; Drossan has thrown good showjumpers; Herciro vh Kieselhof brings the Cicero Z line and loads of talent; Lassiter from

WAIKIKI

CON CORIANO Eagles Stud has youngsters showing talent; Saratoga Obi wan kinobi jumped his first World Cup Qualifier at Revel in August showing the Voltaire/ Wendesi cross has worked; Regal Lagos continues Lindenbergs legacy and is producing well across the board; Rivervale Parco’s Son out of the performance proven Capriccio/ Wunderbar mare shows super temperament, talent and good rideable young stock; Udokes jumped open and has the only Corland blood here, young stock look interesting. It is a tough financial climate in which to breed and sell horses. While we have two major studs with immense contacts oversees and operating on a scale way beyond our average breeder it does not mean that the smaller local breeder cannot produce competitive stock for the market. However the days of standing one or two stallions and continuously covering them to a herd of mares is really no longer viable. The breeders who are still here have mostly cut back, made sure they improved their mares both by competition and/ or selection via their progeny’s quality.

CHEVEYO They have kept up with the newest breeding lines that they can get hold of and so the imported frozen semen market has improved. The main importers of warmblood frozen semen are De Bruyn Equine Services, Embriosem and Iconic Sires. Callaho Stud and Capital Stud, which now have status in Europe and source mainly from the major studbooks there, have a policy of not giving outside services to their stallions in South Africa. Callaho’s annual auction started five years ago and now means that there is a lot of stock with fashionable and diverse breeding, competing and amongst those are mares. So these lines will come back into the local breeding scene and again enable the smaller breeder to improve and revitalise genetic quality. Slowly the depth of dressage breeding lines improves and begins to give local breeders some choices. Stallions like Don Natiello is proving himself in the ring both in temperament and in the talent of his progeny. Sonnentanzer licensed in Oldenburg as well as here, is winning in Elementary Medium dressage.

Westenhagen licensed in Hannover also has good stock on the ground. Waikiki of Wadacre retired, has classical German dressage lines and Florimon is very modern in breeding and type and has just started his career. Uron M remains a consistent producer of lovely youngsters. Compton House Quantico has a fascinating pedigree and has just started his dressage career and has one season’s stock on the ground. There are a good amount of imported well bred dressage mares now entering the system but we still need to have better access to frozen semen from leading dressage sires in Europe. At the end of the day no matter which stallion or mare you use, you need to have knowledge on the subject. Do your research, understand what conformation does and does not allow a horse to do and do not let emotion overwhelm the choice you make. Wishing you all a Happy Breeding season!

Upgrade (Heartbreaker x Pilot) with John Whitaker

De Wiemselbach:

FOR THE MODERN BREEDER At the end of the eighties, breeding and training specialist, Hans Horn, together with his wife Astrid, teamed up with European, World and Olympic champion Jos Lansink, to start the highly successful showjumping stable, Stal Horn B.V. in Oud Ootmarsum in the The Netherlands. The Stal Horn stable provided the opportunity for owners to have their sport horses ridden by a professional show jumper and to be supervised by the prodigious coaching talent of Hans Horn, who amongst other notable accomplishments, can today add to his resume, coach of the Dutch, Italian and Swedish national showjumping teams. The pairing of Horn and Lansink, attracted not only much attention, but many top horses as well as several interesting stallions. 34

SPORTING HORSE Issue 24

A

t first, the Stal Horn stallions were all owned by clients, but this soon changed when Hans invested in his own, which was the catalyst to the birth of De Wiemselbach. Formed as a complimentary service to Stal Horn B.V, De Wiemselbach was one of the first EU semen stations in The Netherlands, with its initial purpose, being to provide mare owners with chilled semen. Since those early days, De Wiemselbach has grown somewhat and today it hosts about 10 stallions and offers chilled and frozen semen worldwide to more than 30 countries, including South Africa, where it can be purchased through the stallion agency, Iconic Sires. When asked what the goal of De Wiemselbach is, Daan Horn, the station’s manager and Hans Horn’s son, says, “The goal has always been quality above quantity. We try to serve our customers with the best bloodlines available and help them achieve their goals in breeding the best showjumping horses.” This is proven by the quality of stallions that De Wiemselbach has had over the years. One of the first, yet undoubtedly the most formidable stallions to have bred under the De Wiemselbach banner, was the legendary Libero H (Landgraf

Tornesch (Lux Z x Libero H) with Malin Baryard-Johnsson

Numero Uno (Libero H x Lord Calando)

I x Renald). Not only a superstar in showjumping in his own right, having won numerous World Cup Grand Prix’s including the 1994 WC Finals in s’Hertogenbosch, he was also one of the most influential stallions of his time. Libero H climbed the stallion ranks to become a sire of sires, with his sons Ustinov and Numero Uno now doing big things for themselves. Yet perhaps his greatest claim as a sire came through his remarkable daughter, the legendary Libertina (Jessica Kuerten), who is still considered one of the best jumping mares of all time. Another to excel beyond the ordinary was Lambrasco (Janne Frederike Maier). Bought as a foal by De Wiemselbach and now continuing with his sire’s legacy, is the stallion Numero Uno (Libero H x Lord Calando), whom Daan remembers as “standing out right away with his movement and type. A real stallion already at a very young age!” Previously ranked number 9 on the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) list of the top 100 jumping sires, Numero Uno has bred numerous Grand Prix winners such as Tamino (Ranked number 1 on the WBFSH list in 2013 with Dutch rider Marc Houtzager) and Tyson (multiple GP and nations cup winner with Leon Thyssen). As of today Numero Uno is the only stallion ever to have 3 descendants in a winning 5* Nations Cup team (La Baule 2013). In February 2013, Numero Uno joined the ranks of a very select group: KWPN “preferent” stallions. At age 16, he

36

SPORTING HORSE Issue 24

was by far the youngest to be awarded the prestigious title. Numero Uno’s half-brother, Ustinov (Libero H x Nimmedor), was purchased at the KWPN stallion approval finals. After an amazing display over the fences, the public loved him immediately. The following day he joined the De Wiemselbach family and soon became KWPN stallion champion 2004. Of all the Ustinov mares presented to the KWPN, a stunning 85% have been awarded the “ster” predicate. Unprecedented so far. Both of these superb stallions are available to South African breeders through frozen semen imported by Iconic Sires. Also available are other great De Wiemselbach stallions: Solitair (Voltiare x Libero H), Tornesch (Lux Z x Libero H), Upgrade (Heartbreaker x Pilot) and Van Gogh (Numero Uno x Bernstein). Solitair was bought as a two year old after he was noticed at the preliminary rounds during the KWPN stallion approvals. A son of the famous sire Voltaire, crossed with the legendary Libero H, he was noted for his excellent type, good movements and fantastic character. As a sire he did not disappoint and there are currently many Solitair offspring competing in International showjumping. A good example is the mare Nouvelle who has gained much success with American rider Laura Kraut. Sadly, Solitair succumbed to an unexpected and untimely death and there is very limited semen left in South Africa.

Van Gogh (Numero Uno x Bernstein) with Marco Kutscher

As a precocious two year old son of the famous stallion Heartbreaker, Upgrade caught Daan’s eye during the preliminary rounds of the KWPN stallion approvals. “I always wanted a stallion with this bloodline. He has a fantastic fighting spirit and always wants to do a good job in the ring. I believe his progeny have the same characteristics and are fighters too.” Says Daan. Upgrade competed up to 1.55m at international shows such as Odense, Oldenburg, Rome and Rotterdam. For those breeders looking to add something extra, then the stallion Van Gogh is an excellent choice. Not only is he a top level jumper, with placings in 1.60m Grand Prix competitions under rider Marco Kutscher, but he also has fantastic movement and produces outstanding dressage horses. If you are looking to add strength to the commonly known dressage lines, then Van Gogh is the right choice. The think tank at De Wiemselbach are constantly looking for new bloodlines and have a proven eye for discovering talent at an early age. With their finger on the pulse, the company understands the ever changing trends and dynamics in the sport horse market and are ahead of the curve when it comes to delivering the kind of horse power that the sport demands. With this in mind, they have high hopes for their most recent purchases; the young stallions Connect (Connor x Contender) Great Blue (Plot Blue x Libero H) and Grodino (Eldorado van de Zeshoek x Celano). Semen from these

three young stallions will be available in South Africa in the near future. Last but by no means least is the proven stallion Tornesch, who has been one of the most successful showjumping stallions in the last couple of years. With his rider Malin Bayard, this combination has been very successful in the biggest showjumping events worldwide. Although not owned by De Wiemselbach, they were granted the opportunity to stand the stallion at stud for a couple of seasons and took the opportunity to collect and freeze some of his semen. Tornesch is well known for his character and fighting spirit and if he can pass these traits to his offspring we will see many successful jumpers from him in years to come. When asked why they want breeders using their stallions in South Africa, Daan replies: “Because this is part of our strategy to have a global presence. South Africa is, in my understanding, a country focusing on quality instead of quantity and therefor fits our company profile very well.” He even goes on to add that any South Africans travelling to Europe are invited to visit their stables and meet their stallions. “You are very welcome and we hope to see you soon!” For more information on the De Wiemselbach stallions available in South Africa visit www.iconicsires.co.za or contact Aileen Papenfus at info@iconicsires.co.za, or on tel. 071 566 7305.

Tell us a little about your younger years when you started riding. I started riding at Lane Stables in Cape Town, through my school, Reddam House. I was the one rider that always fell off, who always refused to jump, and made sure I was safely in the middle on an out ride! Thereafter I leased a pony at Uitsig Estate, who taught me a lot, like how to stay on when she bolted, and I soon learnt how to manage horses and spent every minute with them from the age of 9 years old. Who influenced your riding career? Growing up, I had numerous superstars that inspired me beginning with my local trainer, then moving overseas, I was greatly inspired by numerous young riders such as Kathleen Keller who I rode with, as well as the Olympians, Kyra Kirkland, Morten Thomsen, Isabelle Werth, Carl Hester, and my absolute idol, Charlotte Dujardin. When did you turn professional? At the age of 15 or 16, Sue Cullen spotted me at the Adult SA Champs in KZN where I won on my 4 year old in the novice class. From there on, she offered me the most fantastic rides and opportunities, and inspired me to proceed with a professional career as a rider, completely wiping out any other ambition but to ride! What are your career highlights? My career highlights have to be attending the Swiss Champs, making the Swiss team, and receiving my Olympic candidate card. Riding the Europeans, Hamburg Derby, and number pus CDI’s and placing in the top 3. In the young horses, winning a few nationals on some young horses and winning the Pompadour 5 year old Champs. Here in South Africa, obtaining numerous dressage titles and showing titles, of course, this was all because of my amazing team, sponsors, and being blessed with very special horses . What are your future goals? Everyone says the Olympics... but ultimately, even though this is always the main focus, I hope to become an exceptional horsewoman, and I wish to produce a few more horses of my own to Grand Prix. I would love to have an academy type setup here in Johannesburg, and I hope to see my pupils succeed and achieve what we work hard for together. One day, if all the cards fall into place, I plan to go back overseas and finish the journey I began in 2009, although I will always come home to South Africa. Which horses played a role in your career? I would have to give it to a few horses. Icarus A, who taught me to ride hotness and how to turn tension into harmony, Don De Niro, who taught me to ride something 18hh and 10m long,Wenzel R, owned by Sue Cullen, who opened my eyes to a whole new world, Danzas, who took me to European Champs and to becoming Swiss Individual Champ, and Vienna, who taught me to ride to Grand Prix, and who taught me less is more!

T

he Reonet World Cup Qualifier in Polokwane is, without a doubt, the rider’s show on the yearly showjumping calendar. Conrad and Rene Fourie of Revil Stables pull out all the stops to ensure that the show is a social one despite being a World Cup Qualifier. An incredible bar area and restaurant arrangement overlooks the arena. Riders and spectators can purchase a “rider’s armband” for the duration of the show which gives them access to this area as well as a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. The drinks from the bar flow and Conrad ensures each night everyone has a very good time… good enough that many a rider can be heard cursing the next day after a late night. The grooms’ soccer, sometimes sadly not given the attention it deserves at other shows, becomes a huge crowd pleaser at Revil Stables. This year Team Topbet and Team Nissan went head to head with Topbet coming out, well, tops. The show is always extremely well supported by the incredible sponsors. Headlining the sponsor list is Reonet, a business that conserves and manages water and energy resources for communities, companies and countries. This show is, without a doubt, a fantastic example of how the showjumping community can come together. Many of the sponsors such as Premier

Conrad and Rene Fourie of Revil Stables

Equestrian, Flawless Diamonds, Bryanston Dental Arts and the like are all businesses operated by members of the community. The big winners were as follows: The Premier 1.20 Championship was won by Charles Roberts on First For Horses Callaho For Ray. Charles has done a remarkable job of producing this young horse and will be one to watch out for when he enters the open arena. The 1.30 Topbet Championship was claimed by Barry Taylor on Alzu Skagway while Govett Triggol claimed the 1.35 Hilmar Meyer Grand Prix on his gorgeous mare Elektra. This was Govett’s last show with the mare; his daughter will now take the ride. The 1.40 Bryanston Dental Arts Grand Prix was claimed by Lara Neill on the unassuming Opium De Sauge. This gentle chesnut giant has become the horse to beat at this height and I’m sure many wonder, with his tight turns and big stride, if he can be! The Reonet World Cup Qualifier was claimed, in fantastic style, by the on form Johnathan Clarke and Felix Van De Mispelaere. Watching this pair go round the ring is a master class in elegance and style. Now the showjumpers head back to Johannesburg and begin preparation for the South African Derby.

CLARKE By Yvonne Bolton / Photos by T&B Images

You grew up in KZN – tell us a little about your younger years? I lived in Durban during my childhood and started riding when I was 8 years old at Muriel Higgs Riding School on Ridge Road, Durban. My first pony was a Chestnut gelding called Wildfire – my father was sure its name would scare me and changed it to Fire Dance. Who provided the encouragement to follow this particular passion? My dad – for the first couple of years he even used to ride with me. Where did you and your brothers, Jeremy and Timothy, ride when still in the children’s classes and do you have any fond memories of special ponies you rode then? We all rode at many different places in and around Durban, Hillcrest and Cato Ridge. From early on my father would rent property and we would keep the horses ourselves. Fire Dance, Desert Song, Robson and Eastern Mystic were some of my favourite ponies. With Fire Dance I won the Natal Bending Championships and the Natal Children’s Showjumping and Dressage Championships, to name a few. At 13 years old I became a Junior rider a year early and won the South African Junior Eventing Championships. When you progressed to Juniors, what other Disciplines did you compete in and who was your Coach at that time? I competed in Showjumping, Dressage, Showing and Equitation and was the first rider to captain all four teams in all four disciplines in one year. My coach was Liz du Toit but my father often organized Clinics with other coaches from out of town such as Phillip Smith, Allan Jaffy, Bill Johnson and Yvonne Bolton, to name a few. Give us a little insight into the Junior Championships you competed in and which KZN Teams you represented? I competed in all disciplines and represented teams in Showjumping, Dressage, Showing and Equitation. Over the years I was lucky enough to win all the South African Championships in these disciplines except for showjumping. Was there a special horse you were fortunate to compete on during your Junior years? Yes, St Cloud was my special Junior horse. He excelled in all

Jonathan on Enouche RK in the 1.20m A2 at Blouberg Stables

disciplines and even jumped Junior A Grade. I learnt a lot from him and he set me up for my adult showjumping career. After winning the Witwatersrand Agricultural Supreme Equitation Championship in 1983 give us some details of your Winner’s trip overseas – where you went, who you met and how long you were away? Firstly I went on a Contiki Tour for a month. After that I went to Karl Heinz Giebmanns in Germany for 6 months. Then I went to George Morris in the US for about 3 months, then to Hap Hanson on the West Coast of the US for 3 months and then to clients of his inland from Santa Barbara for another six months. Whilst working for the Lennons, I competed on the Arizona tour and Florida Circuit. In total, I was away from SA for 1 year and 6 months. After returning to SA from Germany and the USA you spent time completing your National Service – tell us a little about your time representing the Defence Force’s Showjumping Team? I actually also represented the Defence Force in Dressage, Eventing and Showjumping. I was there for 2 years. My favourite part of this time of my life was that I competed in my first Derby and competed in the big Showjumping classes. Kommandant Starke used to buy a lot of horses from Namibia for the Defence Force. The one I and my brother, Jeremy, competed was a grey gelding called Galan Onduno and I did my first Derby on him amongst other major competitions. After that you worked for George and Janie Myburg and Carlswald Equestrian Centre prior to winning the 1997 Volvo World Cup Showjumping SA series. Give us some insight into your trip to compete in the International Finals in Helsinki and the World Equestrian Games in Rome in 1998? I won the SA Champs on Davetsaub Lombard in 1996 but only won the Volvo World Cup later on when I was competing Mossandi Diadem. I was lucky enough to go to Helsinki and Rome because Barry elected not to go overseas. While I was there, I jumped at the World Cup Finals in Helsinki and was placed in the Hickstead Derby. I also got my Springbok Colours in the Nation’s Cup in Fasterbo, Sweden. I was also in the South African Team that rode in the World Equestrian Games in Rome – one of the highlights of my showjumping career. We have had him from a 3 year old and although he has been a late developer, he won his first 1.40m outing by winning the Natal Grand Prix earlier this year, and was 4th in the 1.40m Grand Prix at Revil WCQ. We have been to Belgium twice. The first time for Hummer and Felix in 2012 and the Second time in 2015 for Jerba and Enouche. Davetsaub Ajax You also represented South Africa at the All Africa and Franlaren Latecomer were just the beginning of the success I Equestrian Games in Algeria in 2007 when SA won the would achieve with the Slades’ amazing horses. Rina is exceptional Bronze Medal – what was the competition like and were and we were continually placed in World Cup Qualifiers together until she sadly pulled her tendon last year. Hummer is very special you mounted by the Algerians? Due to the success I achieved ridingTamsyn Williamson’s Mossandi to me and it is an honor to compete with him. Felix, as you know, Diadem such as winning the Port Elizabeth and Pretoria World is irreplaceable as the two of us have had an outstanding year Cup qualifier (and the overall winner of the series), this got me so far winning the Nissan Grand Prix, the Nissan FEI World Cup selected to compete in the South African Trinations Team in New Qualifier, the South African Championships and most recently Zealand which was another opportunity for me to represent SA. the Revil Stables World Cup Qualifier in Polokwane. Jerba and Thereafter I competed in Algeria where the Algerians provided us Enouche look promising and I am looking forward to seeing the with horses to compete. We were lucky enough to earn a bronze things we will achieve together. Winning any big competition or in fact competing successfully medal with difficult horses considering the circumstances. at any level in show jumping today depends a lot on the entire During your years of Instructing you have produced many “show jumping team” and I would like to pay a special tribute Junior Champions - do you still manage to include Coaching to Di who ensures that the horses are in peak condition at pupils along with competing on the SA Showjumping the right time for me to compete on. This includes flat work, fitness work, feeding programs and wellness programs (ensuring Circuit? Yes I do. I so enjoy teaching my pupils on a daily basis and love the horses have the appropriate treatment such as physio, acupuncture, inoculations etc.). It makes my job of jumping at watching them succeed. a high and competitive level that much easier when the horses You have been associated and riding for Mark and Di Slade are superbly conditioned. for some years now – how has this partnership impacted I am grateful to the Slades for all the opportunities they have presented me with and I look forward to many years of friendship on your equestrian career? Hugely. I owe a large part of my current success to the Slades not and partnership with them in the future. Warmblood, you purchased as a two year old and who travelled to Europe with you? Rogan Asken convinced me to buy him and I sent him to Pat Pohl at Pohlands Stud for a year to grow up. Anne Ward started him for me up until he jumped 1.10m. After that I proceeded to win the South African Championships, the South African Outdoor Grand Prix and qualified for the Mercedes Riders Championships with him.

HORSE PROFILE

Felix Van De Mispelaere

Di Slade interviewed by Yvonne Bolton / Photos by T&B Images

Jonathan on Felix winning SA Champs 2015 at Shongweni

WCQ Show at Revil Stables

In 2012 you decided to look at horses in Europe with a view to purchasing a young, clean, scopy horse with a good temperament. Fortunately Sancho Voerman in Belguim, whom we dealt with, had known Jonathan for a long time and knew what to look for, so we had a good base to work with from the start. Did Sancho send you Videos to look at prior to your departure for Europe? Yes we viewed numerous videos and then made a long list before we flew over. When Jonathan had ridden Felix van de Mispelaere, what made him special and ultimately led to your purchase of him? When we entered the Yard where Felix was stabled, he was looking out of his box and he instantly reminded me of my old horse Desert Island, whom I had recently put down. I was very emotional and my husband, Mark, said jokingly “Well you had better just send that one!” Jonathan then rode him and said he reminded him of Mossandi Diadem. He felt he was scopey, brave and he really liked him. What was Felix van de Mispelaere’s early history and where was he bred and produced? Felix was bred in Holland by Joris Vermeulen, then started by his daughter and eventually sent to Belguim to be dealt. He had jumped a couple of 1.30m classes before we went over and saw him. Does he come from a bloodline that has produced any other 52

good jumpers? We don’t know of any other jumpers from his bloodline. He is by Labamba out of Joke Van de Mispelaere. She was 20 when she had Felix and is still causing chaos at the Stud letting horses out of their paddocks and is a tough mare. His Dam’s Sire is Lugano van le Roche and one of the young mares we recently purchased through Sancho has this line on her Sire’s side. Jonathan has produced many successful horses – what qualities does he look for when viewing a new horse? For Jono, a horse needs to be willing, elastic and have character. Would you purchase a jumper solely on talent, scope and temperament or does conformation also influence your decision? Mark and I like a horse that has that spark, wants to do the job and is obviously careful and brave. A good temperament will produce a good character. Our horses are all at home and they become part of the family. A good confirmation is important, as certain weaknesses will cause problems later on. What sort of personality does Felix van de Mispelaere possess? Felix is a very, very busy chap! He lives to eat and jump. All top horses have some quirks – what are Felix’s and what is he like around the Yard? He loves attention, but it is tricky because of his insulin resistance, he cannot eat apples and only limited carrots. He, unfortunately, has to be in paddocks with limited grazing and I have had to build 2m high paddock fences for him, as he

just jumps out of anything smaller. He is continuously on the lookout for food and paws for attention.

SAWHS Breed Show & Divine Dressage Show AT MISTICO EQUESTRIAN CENTRE

T

he much anticipated joint venture show between the South African Warmblood Horse Society & Mistico Equestrian Centre took place from the 19th to 21st June 2015. Mistico as a venue needs no introduction. Situated just outside Cape Town on the R312 between Durbanville & Paarl, its facilities boast 2 full size indoor arenas of top international equestrian standards and a third indoor is currently under construction. There are several outside sand & grass arenas, plus 120 stables (for the duration of the show weekend, one of their barns was completely filled with horses that were entered in the show), catering facilities, parking for 1000 cars & horseboxes etc. It is the ideal show venue as it caters not only for the horses & riders, but also for the comforts of the spectators. The Joint Venture Project aimed to hold SAWHS breed classes & graded dressage classes to signify how breeding of dressage horses & the discipline of dressage as a sport interrelate & influence each other. The competitive rider may not be interested in breeding as such. But the sporthorse he/she competes on is the outcome of focussed breeding with the intension of producing a horse with temperament, rideability & movement. SHOW ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & RULES: Each of the two distinct elements of the show were run under the rules pertaining to them. However, they were held on a mutually exclusive basis. This allowed breeders or owners of

SAWHS recorded horses to enter only the breed classes if they so wished, without having to be members of DSA or SAEF. SAWHS breed Classes (in-hand, loose movment & ridden): The South African Warmblood Horse Society is the governing body for Warmblood horses in the Republic of South Africa and it falls under the SA Agricultural Registrar of Livestock Improvement (breeding of livestock). The society is a full member of the World Breed Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) which is affiliated to the FEI and based in Europe. www.sbfsh.org The SAWHS classes were run under SAWHS rules so horses entering these classes have to be recorded in the SAWHS database. The SAWHS studbook is an open studbook, as are most of the warmblood studbooks of the world. And so horses that are not SAW, but that have a recognised pedigree, are eligible for entry into the SAWHS database. Essentially & simply put, this means that if the pedigree is recognised & the horse is inspected, it can be used in a breeding program of warmblood horses to further develop the breed. General breed classes were offered on the schedule of the show for horses that did not qualify to enter the SAWHS classes, either because they were an entirely separate breed & therefore not eligible to be entered into the SAWHS database, or because they were unrecorded warmblood horses. This being the first time a show of this kind was run in the Cape, it was pleasing that owners & breeders made the effort to have their horses recorded, if they were not already in the database. This was reflected in well supported warmblood classes, beyond what was expected. Divine Dressage graded classes to PSG & Inter I: Dressage as a sporting discipline is run under the rules of Dressage South Africa (DSA) as well as the South African Equestrian Federation (SAEF) (which falls under the Ministry of Sports). Requirements for entering the dressage classes of the Mistico SAWHS Joint Venture Show were as for any graded dressage show; active membership with DSA & SAEF are mandatory. To enhance this novel initiative, Mistico supported the value of inviting an international judge. We managed to secure Mr Klaus Storbeck from Germany. An FN qualified judge (FN – the German National Equestrian Federation), he has judged dressage to Grand Prix & showjumping to S**** for about 30 years. In Germany he regularly judges Provincial Championships as well as National Championships. In Warendorf, where the German National Equestrian Federation & the German Equestrian Olympic Committee are based, he has judged 3 & 4 year old riding horses at the Bundeschampionate (German National Championships – open to German-bred, registered warmblood sporthorses) on numerous occasions. Furthermore, he is an expert & member at the German Association for Judges for higher qualification of dressage judges. As such he holds seminars for dressage judges, focusing not only on movement & rideability but also on type & conformation of the dressage horse. 58

Over a period of 3 days, many horses had the opportunity to stand out & shine. The SAWHS In-Hand classes took place on the Friday morning. The Kuda Insurance Western Cape SAWHS In-Hand Grand Championship went to the 5 year old imported Danish mare Bounty Gersdorf (Sunny Boy OLD / Leandro HOLST). A modern & uphill type, she impressed the International judge with her elastic movement. The Reserve Champion was the 2 year old SAW Devotion (Depserado KWPN / Granulit HAN). This beautiful black mare is owned by Sue Botha and was bred by Midas Touch Stud. Winner of the 1-2 year old fillies (sponsored by African Extracts ROOIBOS) was one of Rivendell Stud’s latest imports, the chestnut De Niro filly called Duet. She is full sister to Kristina Bröring-Sprehe’s Desperados, who was on the German Olympic team in London in 2012 and won the individual silver medal at the European Championships 2015 in Aachen last month. The 3 year old chestnut Hanoverian mare Fantasia (Five Star HAN / His Highness HAN) who was bred by Compton House Stud & is owned by Lisa Hindmarch, won the 3-5 year old mare class. This mare was inspected by the Hanoverian Verband in April of this year & taken up into the Hauptstutbuch (main studbook of mares). Some beautiful colts & stallions were presented.Winner of the 1-2 year old colts was another recently imported horse by Rivendell Stud, the well-proportioned & expressive Rivendell’s Ringmaster

of Stratford Dunsinane (by Dageraad KWPN) who was second with 70% in the SAWHS Potential Dressage Horse class for 6 & 7 year olds, as well as 2nd in the AN6 dressage class. They share the same dam, Startford Rozeetha (by Ramirez Furi).

In the 3-5 year old stallion class, the winner was Rivendell Beregond (Belissimo M /Wolkentanz I). Both Beregond & Rivendell Drambuie (Diamonit OLD /Vatout Trak) who was second in the class, received their first approval with SAWHS at an inspection held before the show. In the Western Cape SAWHS Stallion Championship (sponsored by German Horse Training), which saw the first & second place winners of all the colt & stallion classes competing against each other, Beregond & Drambuie respectively took the first & second places again. These are 2 exciting young stallions that we look forward to seeing more of in the future.

The SAW mare Lola (owned & bred by Claire Dicey) won the 3-4 year old loose movement class. She is by the imported Hanoverian stallion Rivendell’s Highflyer, who won his SAWHS In-Hand stallion class earlier that day. The loose movement class for 4 & 5 year olds was won by the Danish import Bounty Gersdorf (Sunny Boy OLD / Leandro HOLST).

The stallion to shine in the 5 years & older category was the elegant imported Hanoverian stallion Highflyer (Hotline HAN / Rohdiamant OLD). He stands at stud at Rivendell. The SAWHS Loose Movement classes followed the In-hand classes on the Friday. Rivendell’s Ringmaster received another first place, winning the 1-2 year old class. The 2-3 year old category was won by Midas Touch Devotion (Despeardo KWPN / Granulit HAN). But the second place winner Stratford Bulgari (Baccio KWPN / Ramirez Furi KWPN) also stood out. The judge commended him on his outstanding walk (9.5) & his very balanced canter. Bulgari is the half-brother

Winner of the La Couronne Western Cape SAWHS Loose Movement Championship 2015 was Midas Touch Devotion, who simply embodied the complete package of movement & type for a dressage horse. Reserve Champion in the Loose Movement was Bounty Gersdorf. THE SAWHS RIDDEN CLASSES In the SAWHS Ridden classes on the Saturday, Callaho Bellavida (by Callaho’s Benicio) & Nikayla Burger won the Riding Horse Under Saddle class (16h & under), going forward to the championship class where they were up against the 1st & 2nd places of the Riding Horse Under Saddle class (Over 16h): the SA Sport Horse Blue Diamond (by Harvard) & the imported KWPN gelding Edelman. Edelman is by the KWPN stallion Johnson who is being competed by Hans Peter Minderhout from the Netherlands. The pair won team gold as well as the individual bronze medal at the European Championships in Aachen 2015 last month. The Baker & McVeigh Championship for Warmblood Issue 24 SPORTING HORSE

Horse Under saddle was also won by Blue Diamond who was ridden by Kim Bray. Blue Diamond also placed third in the SAWHS Potential Dressage Horse class for 6 & 7 years olds. The SAWHS Potential Dressage Horse Class for 6 & 7 year olds, sponsored by Molenkoning, was won with 75% by Kuda Insurance’s Callaho Rinaldo. Ridden by Dawn Newman, the pair also rode in the graded dressage classes on the Sunday & won 2nd place in the AEM4 class. The second place in the 6 & 7 year old class went to big grey gelding Stratford Dunsinane (by Dageraad/Ramirez Furi) & Carsten Peeters with 70%.

Armin Fritz with both Callaho Barcelona (AN) & Udo Kid (PSG), Nichola Mohr with her horses Callaho Winston (AEM) & Callaho Fabriccio (AA), Karin Koep with Rivendell’s Delovely (AM) and Carsten Peeters on Compton House Highland Fling (AE). In terms of the horses that had already been seen in the breed classes, it was a nice affirmation of the results seen in the SAWHS classes on Friday & Saturday that these horses also did well in the graded dressage classes.

Scribing for Mr Storbeck during the majority of the show was Georgina Roberts. She has a BTech in Equine Science from With a score of 82% & therefore significantly in the lead, Pretoria Technicon & works as a professional dressage rider & Compton House Fortuna (by Five Star HAN out of a Sandro Hit trainer based in Gauteng, competing up to Medium Tour (Inter OLD dam) won the SAWHS Potential Dressage Horse class for A & Inter B). She has represented Gauteng and won provincial 4 & 5 year olds (sponsored by La Couronne Wines). This classy & national titles. She is passionate about dressage not only as dark bay mare recently achieved Elite status with the Hanoverian a sport, but as an art and having scribed for many dressage Verband, when she completed her ridden mare performance test judges she has an exceptional understanding of the subtleties for the Verband in April 2015. The second & third places in this of evaluating a ridden test. Georgina felt that scribing for Mr class went to Sommelier (by Saruman SAW) & Carsten Peeters Storbeck was a valuable opportunity & she was impressed by with 71% and Bounty Gersdorf (Sunny Boy/Leandro) & Nadine the manner in which Mr Storbeck judged the classes: Maheri with 70%. “Mr Storbeck was very clear on marking according to DIVINE DRESSAGE – GRADED CLASSES: directives, and was more fanatical about quality than accuracy. Being used to judging top horse & rider combinations in Europe, He was not overly concerned if transitions in lower grades it was an interesting experience for Mr Storbeck to judge in South were slightly before or after the marker, as long as they were Africa. Though the overall standard of riding in South Africa may good transitions. not (yet) be at the level it is in Europe, there were riders & horses that really stood out & in his opinion would easily be able to He pretty much let riders use the short sides for preparations, and compete at the same level in Europe. Some of the tests he was if they had to make a correction in a corner before a movement, very pleased with were Tanja Kyle & Eagles Wiseguy in the Inter I, he didn’t mark them down for it. 60

He was very strict when something was not good, e.g. when a flying change did not come off, they got a zero out of ten. Usually you would get at least a two as long as you get from marker to marker & your horse changes lead. But if things were “good”, he would give an eight. Eight is good! Seven is fair, not good!! Nine is very good, and ten is excellent – NOT perfect! He was very good on training scale, very strict on rhythm faults. We saw a lot in lengthened trots where riders just chased their horses. He was not happy with bad riders, esp. at elementary level where sitting trot is introduced. Now, we are NOT in Europe so we can’t be too discouraging to amateurs because they form most of our market, BUT when it is a question of horse welfare & really motivating a bad rider to improve, you DO have to say something.” Since this joint venture show was based on dressage breeding & dressage as a discipline, there were no jumping classes or classes for young jumping horses. However, the future will hopefully see a show of a similar kind for show jumpers. As an introduction to the concept, a loose jumping demonstration was held on Friday evening after the loose movement championship. It was very well attended with approximately 100 spectators staying to watch the action. Unfortunately we struggled to get many showjumping-bred, recorded warmbloods to volunteer, so some brave dressage owners volunteered their precious dressage “babies”. They did not do

badly at all, considering they were all in the loose jumping lane for the first time! The last horse of the demonstration was Rivendell Cyclone, owned by Elana Hopkins. With a pedigree of Clinton II x Chief Warden XX, he was expected to show an exceptional, scopey jump, and he did not disappoint. Not knowing what to expect from the show, as it was Mr Storbeck’s first visit to South Africa, it was a huge compliment to the show organisers that he considered the event to be wellrun & coordinated. Only afterwards did the show organisers find out that on top of all the other duties Mr Storbeck has in Europe, he is also the show organiser for some major events, one in particular being a qualifying show for the Nurnberg Burgpokal. The Nurnberg Burgpokal is a competition circuit for 7 to 9 year old dressage horses competing at PSG level. It is used as a stepping stone between the 6 year old dressage horse tests and the classic Prix St Georges tour. Between May & November each year, 15 qualifiers are held throughout Germany. The winning horse at each qualifier is eligible to compete in the Finals held at the Frankfurt Indoor Show every December. The Mistico Divine Dressage & SAWHS Breed Show and its success would not have been possible without the all of the sponsors and the help of so many people behind the scenes. Sally Ferguson & Michelle De Villiers-Moreira shared the warmblood society’s vision for this project. Gail, Michael & Siobhaun Wall offered support & a willingness to allow us to try something new. Without their fantastic facilities, the show would have lacked that special something that only a venue of such a calibre can offer. Issue 24 SPORTING HORSE

Life to Love

THE SKYROO STUD PHILOSOPHY “Our story is short and precise based on the breath of horse and man. An instinct is something that comes from the very depth of your soul and when recognized, is the most powerful act of being. So on that we explain our instinct towards horse and being. Not every horse has a natural instinct of leadership, but given the confidence of being, every horse will give you more than 100% commitment in support and guidance to allow you to live a better life. This is what we feel so strongly in the horses we have been dealt a privilege of sharing with family and friends.”- Sean ReesGibbs, owner of Skyroo Stud. In 2000 the discovery of a wonderful piece of virgin Klein Karoo scrub situated between Bonnievale and McGregor in the Western Cape was where it all began. “It was the beauty of the Karoo, the vastness of the night sky and through the heart of a child that Skyroo was born. The beginning

of a dream led by instinct and treated like a child, we have developed this haven of life. Here we breed our horses allowing their instinct to bring us to understand more of “Life to Love”, says Sean. It was only much later, after years of structure development when Dean, Sean’s son, had excelled as a student and achieved top marks in SANEF Modules 1, 2 and 3,that horses came to the Skyroo Stud. His achievements motivated the family to commit and entrench themselves in a long time passion of horse breeding. Advance Stud Management was extensively covered in Dean’s studies and Sean had experience in the race horse breeding and racing industry and this was to set them on the path of discovery and ultimately the birth of Skyroo Stud. They were interested in elegant, tough, powerful, enduring and swift horses. Arabians being the oldest horse breed with unique features and ability and “having it all’ was a driving force. After acquiring some knowledge and experience, they began looking for pure Arabian breeding stock. The initial guidelines of acceptance were based on conformity regarding the horse’s structure, and balance. Coming into contact with many horses as well as people in South Africa, a preference of type came into the equation, which traced back to definite bloodlines and pedigrees. In the understanding of both 68

SPORTING HORSE Issue 24

phenotype and genotype of the Arabian, they settled on the intricately bred Johrhemar Arabians. They had noticeable differences in that they were tall, noble, and classic with great temperaments. Fortunately they had met Marie-Louise and Johann van Wyk at the very beginning of their stud sale. The Johrhemar Stud was sadly closing down after being in the Arabian industry for many decades, contributing to the worldwide breed and especially to the South African stock. Specially chosen imported blood created this unique look and character. Exceptional movement with extreme tail and neck carriage kept Sean coming back as he and his family visited the stud several times making their choices of mares, foals and one absolute Arabian Stallion, “Natih”. Their plan was clear in keeping the blood close (line breeding) in their future breeding. In most of the stud’s horses’ dam lines there is a very unique and type cross between straight Egyptian stallion Hamse el Fagr and the famous Gazelle bint Masri – all these formatted relations amongst their horses will ensure better chances when breeding as the certain traits, characteristics and temperament have more of a chance of getting passed on due to the closeness. Arabians being a pure breed allows this type of breeding. Johrhemar used two related stallions, Shakkarr (Dakar el Jamaal x Bellah Reina) and Bey el Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x TW

Bey Fantasy) both being Ali Jamaal descendants. Shakkarr’s dam providing an El Shaklan influence while Beys el Jamaal’s dam a Bey Shah influence, both these influential stallions have contributed extremely successfully to the Arabian breed over decades. Two fillies they have sourced bring a very special element to the Skyroo STUD breeding programme. Both their dams are Johrhemer horses which connects their blood to the rest of their horses. One filly is bred by Belvedere PSY, a Padron Psyche son and Scottsdale reserve champion, whilst the other filly is bred by ZT Marwteyn, a Marwan al Shaqab son - both stallions have proved their worth and incorporating this blood with their already remarkable combinations will hopefully give them nothing less than extraordinary future progeny. Skyroo Stud’s breeding will be strict to compliment these lines in order to establish a horse of temperament, with height, beauty, conformation, balance, power and elegance being of crucial importance. To achieve this, they plan to adhere to proven principals of upbringing (Harmony and Tranquility) in so allowing the true soul (Instinct) of these magnificent animals to transpire. Their beliefs are instinctive to breed character, with inspiration and passion that passes on that gift of sharing “Life to Love”.

In the meantime Sean’s wife, Katharine fell in love with the Painted Appaloosa’s Stud mare, “Black Pearl” - a most beautiful Appaloosa Sport horse of 16h plus. Cautiously Marna Smith, the stud owner allowed Katharine to acquire this amazing mare which she had bred and nurtured. Along with a stallion “Rock Star” and a filly, Skyroo Stud had some Appaloosa horses of significance (Tall, colour and blood). The focus at Skyroo Stud is primarily on Arabian influence due to their wonderful traits and instincts, so bloodlines of importance will be their breeding focus. Their horses will be multi talented with criteria towards temperament (character) balance (power) beauty (elegance) heart (endurance) and last but not least, intelligence. It is on this basis the acquisition of their offspring will be based, a comparative requirement being of a similar nature, towards understanding the instinct of “Life to Love”. Skyroo STUD has strict principals of natural horsemanship with no enhancing materials or unnatural training to enhance their being. All horses are treated individually and will be dealt with regarding their personalities accordingly. Foals will be monitored daily to understand their behaviours and when yearlings, will be identified for what is best suitable regarding their future. Acquisitions will be based on principals of what is best for the horse.

Sunday was highlighted by the Nissan Celebrity Cowboy Challenge. Dominey Alexander, Nicky Whitfield,Trudy Marsland, Nicole Horwood, BarryTaylor and Lorette Knowles-Taylor swopped their jods for jeans, and had to ride a prescribed Reining pattern, including some EETO obstacles. This was all done on advanced western trained horses, without much practise opportunity. Apparently the western horses felt the jumping vibe their new riders brought along and Lorette and her western horse, Phantom Star (owned by Savannah Boltman) created quite a bit of excitement when Phantom Star decided to jump – in a western saddle, catching Lorette off-guard - a pole (over a meter high) that had to be pushed and Nicky Whitfield’s horse decided to put in a huge jump of a bank! But testament to the country’s top riders they took the change in their stride and gave wonderful performances that trilled the crowds! The celebrity riders were dressed by Rocking Horse Togs, supplier of western riding clothing. These sponsored clothes were then auctioned and the money contributed to a local charity organisation.

Barry and Lorette Taylor, Nicky Whitfield and Nicole Horwood

The Western Festival, once again, was jam-packed with classes, markets and events that catered for everyone’s needs! A huge thanks to all the sponsors that made this event possible and keep your eye on the calendar for the dates for the Western Festival 2016!

porting Horse continues with our part two spotlight on Namibian Warmblood studs. The Namibian Warmblood Horse Society currently has 33 member studs throughout Namibia. Some 500 Namibian warmblood mares are registered with the Namibian Stud Breeders Association. The breeding guidelines of the NWHS state that the objective is the breeding of a noble, big-framed, correct and performanceorientated Warmblood horse with elastic and balanced movements, as well as a strong aptitude for jumping. The horse should have a good temperament and should be suitable for all recognised international equestrian disciplines. Every year the NWHS hosts the licensing of horses guided by this breeding objective in order to licence young horses in the different studbooks. Many breeders make use of frozen semen imported from Europe to incorporate successful sires in their breeding programs. Well considered breeding combined with natural raising conditions and professional handling are the foundations of Namibian-bred sport horses. 78

ALPHA WARMBLOOD STUD Passion, or specifically a passion for horses, was the reason Alpha Warmblood Stud was founded in 2009 by Bianca (then Braun) and Dr Hans Gerd Lueesse. In 2010 the stud was moved to its home at Farm Lichtenstein West some 30km south-west of Windhoek. Mares are from well-established Namibian breeding lines, most of them having German sires in their pedigrees such as Coriando, Larome, Realist and Menotti. Special emphasis is placed on good character and temperament in mares. German sires that have proved themselves through licensing, stallion performance testing, competition and their offspring are used through AI. Bianca is a registered equine reproduction specalist and imports semen from Celle State Stud and Hengststation Meyer. Most mares are mated to dressage stallions to address the local shortage of real dressage horses. So far they have used Dauphin, Rotspon, Wolkenstein II, Edward, Londontime, Damsey, First Dance and are expecting foals by Lissaro, SpĂśrcken and FĂźrst Nymphenburg. Sires used on mares with jumping ability and corresponding pedigree are Satisfaction and Copyright. The Alpha Stud Stallion is Alpha So Cool by Seducer xx who is a sought-after eventing sire. So Cool has been very successful in eventing and dressage in Namibia and will now compete in eventing and show jumping in South Africa. His foals are good-looking all-rounders that are easy to handle.

Frischgewaagd Gluecksfee –Sire: Seeis Andros , Dam: Midgard Gazelle

Foals are handled from birth onwards. They grow up in herds on the farm on natural grazing with supplementary feeding when necessary. Mountainous terrain ensures very strong bone and hoof growth. All horses are handled regularly in a friendly and respectful manner to develop their trust and familiarize them with all things human. In this way the opportunity to develop their inherited potential is given from an early age. FRISCHGEWAAGD STUD Frischgewaagd Stud was established in 2000 by Rolf & Marion Barth on the Frischgewaagd farm, just 90 km east of Windhoek and 45km east of the Hosea Kutako international Airport of Namibia. The rugged terrain makes for well bred hardy horses, which are sound and attentive. They roam freely and are seldom stabled, with ample natural food and water ensuring well conditioned mares and foals. This freedom allows development in a natural environment which guarantees well balanced horses. It is a modern stud which places great emphasis on conformation, movement and jumping ability, breeding horses for jumping, dressage hacking, as well as hiking and pleasure riding.

CONNEMARA PONY BREED

By Zena Penfold / The SA Conservation Programme thanks all who contributed photographs for this article

DOES THE CONNEMARA PONY BREED HAVE A NICHE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN EQUESTRIAN MARKET? This is a question yet to be answered by the Equestrian breeder, owner and rider market. There is no question that the Connemara Pony (the largest of the European Mountain and Moorland breeds and Ireland’s only indigenous pony breed) has a worldwide equestrian niche as there are Connemara Pony Breeders’ Societies around the world (including South Africa, New Zealand and Australia). 86

deal as childrens’ first and second ponies the Connemara Pony is world-renowned for their athleticism, versatility and forgiving temperament. The breed makes show and competition ponies excelling in all Equestrian Disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping, Showing, Endurance Riding and competitive Driving making them ideal for team equestrian disciplines such as inter-schools (SANESA), mounted games (Pony Club) as well as multi-disciplines such as Eventing and Equitation. Connemara ponies and horses (that have been crossed with Connemara) can often be seen representing their Provinces in Show Jumping, Dressage and Showing. Their breed standard characteristics are: a short attractive head, sport horse type (due to Thoroughbred, Arabian and Welsh blood) producing refined features, good bone, are hardy and intelligent in colours of grey, shades of brown and sometimes

CONNEMARA PONY BREED black – in a small package of 13.2-14.2hh (1.28-1.48cm)! The ears should be of pony type (relatively short). The legs should be relatively short from the knees and hocks to the ground, with a strong, muscular upper leg, strong and well-defined knees and hocks, and well-shaped hard feet which are of a medium size. The action should be free, active and easy. The Connemara pony should be intelligent with a good temperament, suitable for small adults and children; it should be hardy with good endurance; be sure-footed, sound, and able to jump. Here is some history about the breed in Southern Africa.. SOUTH AFRICA The first mention of South Africa is made in the Irish Connemara Pony Society Stud Book. Here, the export of two, two-year-old ponies in 1966 to Sydney Press, Johannesburg is recorded. They were Clonkeehan Barna Boy and Abbeyleix Tansy. Keirin of Leam’s arrival in Zimbabwe in September 1968 was imported by a Miss Worthington. Keirin’s son Dundrum born was in 1976 and was subsequently acquired by Christine Walwyn of the nationally known Ashgar Stud

based in Clarens, Eastern Free State. Both were inspected by an Irish representative in 1985 and registered with the Irish Connemara Society. The climate of the Free State is extreme with very cold winters and very hot summers, not good for maintaining healthy thoroughbreds but ideal for these ponies used to extreme weather conditions with youngsters wintering out since yearlings. The wide open spaces and the rough grazing of the veldt provide the necessary exercise space and diet (concentrates, vitamins and minerals excluded) that the big horses require for strong limbs, healthy bodies and minds. LESOTHO In 1978 Milford Hurricane and Crockaun Connemara (also known as Croc on Oir) were purchased for the Lesotho National Stud as the result of a project undertaken by the Irish Government in consultation with the Lesotho Government. The aim of the project was to enhance, conserve and improve the Basotho Pony upon whom the Basotho farmers relied heavily as a means for transport. As a result of the Boer War thousands of their best bred stock was lost and the Basotho Pony breed was sadly depleted.

After 3 years of research it is established that the Connemara Pony Breed and its history is in jeopardy in South Africa if drastic steps are not taken to protect and improve the pure bred ponies. Similar incidents have happened with other “native” breeds around the world in particular the British Isles. Dedicated trusts have been set up to manage the breeds along with their Breed Societies and have not only bred them in captivity but have turned them into education, conservation and tourism attractions. The Connemara and its horse cousins the Irish Draught breeds are also closely The Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society (based in Ireland), watched as historically they have been an essential part of was founded in 1923, who have worked tirelessly to preserve British agriculture. the breed type as, like in South Africa the ancient gene pool became diluted due to out-crossing. The stud book was SO WHY IS THE PURE-BRED CONNEMARA RARE IN established in 1926. Today, Connemaras are bred worldwide SOUTH AFRICA? in Ireland and Britain, as well as on the European continent, Due to the market demands for cross-bred sport horses North America, Australasia, Australia, New Zealand and here for performance and recreational horse riding, breeds have been out-crossed with animals such as Arabians and in South Africa. Thoroughbreds and mix-breeds such as Warmbloods in Connemara Pony shows are held worldwide, in South Africa order to cater to fashion, enhance looks, height, temperament, there are two major shows the Horse of the Year Show held weight and athleticism making them more suitable for the in Johannesburg in Gauteng and the Welsh Cob and Pony show ring and competition rather than their original home Society Autumn Gold also held in Gauteng. However, The use which was to pull a plough, mount the owners to hunt most famous of all being the Annual Clifden Connemara Pony foxes or pull the carriage for the family to go to church on Show, which takes place every August, at the Showgrounds, Sundays. In other words, the equestrian market needs have changed and breeders have catered to that need by crossClifden, Co. Galway, Ireland. The Irish Government donated two stallions, Milford Hurricane and Croc on Oir. They were taken to the Lesotho National Stud at Thaba Tseka. Evidence of the integration of the Connemara and Arabian breeding can still be seen in ponies in Lesotho today. Sadly the project did not prove sustainable and due to theft and natural “disbursement” these horses were lost to the South African Connemara community although their ancestry can be seen in registration documents of the Connemara ponies alive today.

breeding. Competition with the small thoroughbred and the Welsh breed of ponies and the lack of exposure in driving and hunting (disciplines in which the Connemara excels) has resulted in difficulty for the breed to find its market niche in South Africa. Consequentially the breed now suffers from genetic erosion, which has meant that the factory, in other words the primary breed or pure-bred animal’s genetic pool has been eroded to such an extent that the purebred Connemara pony breed numbers in South Africa are presently placed in the Critical category. On a positive note we know that there is a lot of international support out there and through media such as Facebook and Twitter it is possible for those members with pure-breds to provide the Connemara Society with information of mares that are still healthy and living. Those of us who have owned or leased Connemaras would reluctantly own anything else and so with breeding stallions still available and with investigative recording of pure-bred mares in the marketplace the factory is still available if rather fragmented and geographically dispersed across South Africa. Geographic concentration, stud closure, escalating costs and disease outbreaks are constant environmental risks to any horse breeder and realistically a threat to the breed itself. It is the responsibility of breeders, owners, riders and the

Breed Societies of any rare breed to develop, promote, and preserve the ponies as a distinctive breed. The supporting organization that co-ordinates and funds the SA Connemara Pony Breed Conservation Program based at Millsleigh Irish Sport and Pony Stud (Dipereng Equestrian Services) has been awarded Section 21 nonprofit status to support its education and conservation plans. As a Project Management and enabling company to develop small equestrian businesses and designated projects, it has the knowledge and experience to put such a Conservation project in place. Over the past few years the owner has had contact with the other SA and International Connemara pony breeders and professional riders. Partnered with appropriate legal and financial processes and supporting documentation in place, it has been possible to save the pure-bred Connemara Pony and its registry in South Africa in such a way to ensure its legacy for the future. By using internet and printed media with attending animal promotion shows, it is possible to market the initiative to a wide audience in a short period of time. We are passionate about our Connemara Ponies and we hope, that over time, you will be too!
