COVER STORY 10

Capital Colnardo & Nicole Horwood

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

CAPITAL STUD

PERFECTING THE ART OF BREEDING BRILLIANCE The creation of a superstar starts long before the champion’s podium finish. Years and years of endless studying of bloodlines, ongoing mixing and matching of potential genetic excellence and of course the unrivalled dedication of training and partnership between horse and rider. So just how has Capital Stud managed to produce so many warmblood champions over the last few years? We chatted to owner Henning Pretorius and rider Nicole Horwood to get more insight.

W

ith more than 400 Capital Stud horses on the stud farm at any one time, it is vital the farm performs as a well-oiled machine to ensure it runs smoothly and seamlessly. It’s managed on a day to day basis by people that are responsible for different tasks ranging from stud management, the production of young horses, competing the more advanced horses and production of hay and management of pastures. There are three work riders on the farm that manage the production of the young horses and the more advanced horses are ridden by Nicole Horwood, Michelle Hobbs, Helen Bean, Ronnie Healy, Bronwyn Short, Jodie Pieters and Bruce Dewar. The stud is managed by Henning’s youngest son, Stephan, with the help of 37 grooms and Stephan’s assistant Lucky Makanize. The breeding is Henning’s responsibility with the capable help of Dr Duncan Prinsloo. I am very fortunate to have a great team behind me – and without them it would not have been possible. When asked what is the recipe for successful breeding, Henning says that it’s all about breeding from the best and then having those horses produced by the best; “This means that you need to acquire the best gene pool that you possibly can by importing horses, especially mares from all over the world. Warmblood horse breeding consists of different breeding associations in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. These breeding associations each have different bloodlines which are horses that are approved to breed within these breeding associations. In South Africa we have the opportunity to select horses from all these associations and combine them to eventually be able to breed incredible horses. This puts us in a unique position and should allow us to breed some of the best horses in the world.” In terms of what makes a winning combination, Nicole believes that the mental attitude plays a significant role; “Confidence is key and you need to believe in yourself as well as your horse. What you put in is what you get out and there are absolutely no shortcuts. Both horse and rider need to have a good understanding of each other and this is most evident through

hard work at home and many hours in the saddle. Obviously you need a talented horse with a good work ethic – which is where the importance of breeding is evident. It also plays a big part in terms of the horse’s attitude - they must want to please you and they should love their job. In order to ensure that they remain stimulated it’s important to ensure variety in their training – keeping them interested and focused. No two horses are the same so you should have a different system for each horse and adjust your training methods to what suits them best as individuals.” Henning echoes Nicole’s sentiments regarding work ethic side of things; “Nicole is a formidable competitor who has achieved everything that a rider can wish for in South Africa. She is an extremely dedicated and self-motivated person that will spend hours on her own attending to her horses, with patience, perseverance and plenty of love. Today Capital Don Cumarco and Capital Colnardo are two horses that are very sought after internationally. Not only are they two fantastic horses in terms of ability and temperament, but it’s also thanks to the work that Nicole has put in over the last six years.” It is then this dedication and talent that has seen Nicole & Capital Don Cumarco become the only combination of horse and rider in South Africa to win the coveted Triple Crown which consists of The SA Outdoor Grand Prix,The SA Champs and The Galencia Property South African Derby. “I hadn’t realised I had won the Tripple Crown until someone mentioned it to me. Each individual event in itself is a great achievement so to win all 3 in the same year is something I will savour for the rest of my life. I feel really honoured to ride a horse of Capital Don Cumarco’s calibre as he has helped me achieve every goal I set myself and so much more. He just seems to excel year on year and I think that a lot of his success has to do with his pedigree. One of Henning’s favourite bloodlines is Cumano / Cassini and he spent a lot of time sourcing Don Cumarco. Issue 20 SPORTING HORSE

11

COVER STORY He bought him in from Europe as a foal and I started riding him as a four year old. I think what makes him so exceptional is the fact that he is so sensitive. The Cumano bloodlines usually are sensitive but this is then what makes them so careful. In terms of looking ahead to the remainder of 2014, I would like to try to defend my Derby title, as well as be competitive in the World Cup series after winning the first two legs. When asked what makes Capital Stud the best, Henning believes that the success of a stud a is measured by the performance of the horses in the competition ring; “For the past three to four years Capital Stud has won most of the major titles in South Africa. Capital Rafika D’Or ridden by Jodie Pieters has won the SA Champs as well as the World Cup Qualifier series. Over the last two years Capital Don Cumarco ridden by Nicole Horwood won theTtriple Crown and has won the Derby two years in a row and so far this year has won both the World Cup Qualifiers. Horses that were bred by Capital Stud are seen daily competing in all the classes, with exceptional results. Make no mistake that we strive 12

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

to breed affordable quality horses for the amateur rider in South Africa as well. If you look at our horses’ overall performances that would make Capital Stud the most successful stud by far.” When thinking back to his childhood, Henning never imagined that his life would have turned out like it has; “It all started with the import of Ulior and Capriccio. It was going to be a small breeding operation by using the two stallions on local mares. I soon realised that I needed better mares, after which I started importing. I then realised that there were more bloodlines and to enable me to breed better horses I started importing more stallions and more mares from different bloodlines. Before I knew it, the horses that I bred had soon won all of the major competitions. The next challenge is to test ourselves at the international level - this is a natural process that occurs when you are competitive as you have to keep on improving on the quality of your horses. As every horse-lover would know: Horses are not a job, they are a lifestyle – a lifestyle that I am very fortunate to live!”

THE GALENCIA PROPERTY SOUTH AFRICAN DERBY

EQUESTRIAN EXCELLENCE SET TO EXCEL This year’s Derby is set to be the best and busiest since inception 49 years ago. Rich in history and the highlight on the equestrian calendar, this event culminates in the Galencia Property South African Derby at 2pm on 5 October at the Kyalami Equestrian Park.

hat makes a good event become a great event is something that doesn’t happen overnight. History is something that can’t be bought or created in the short-term, and it’s this ‘history’ that moves an occasion out of the ordinary category into a highly anticipated event that everyone wants to be a part of. Steeped in history, the South African Derby was first established in 1965 and was held on the Inanda Club cricket field in Sandton. Present at this event was Douglas Bunn, the equestrian personality largely responsible for the Hickstead Derby in England. 1966 saw the event move to Pioneer Park in Johannesburg South as the cricket field was unavailable. The course was then built by the late Jack Myburg and according to David Stubbs, it proved to be a real credit to his ingenuity and hard work. However 1967 was the year in which a permanent piece of farm land was set aside as the Derby arena allowing David Stubbs to build the fixed obstacles including the stone wall, Devil’s Dyke and the bank and with the assistance of Captain Christopher Coldrey it was designed as a replica of the Hickstead Derby. World renowned Pam Carruthers, the course builder who had traveled the world plying her trade, also attended the event that year. Pam was closely associated with the Hickstead Derby and later was responsible for the development of Spruce Meadows, Canada. In terms of sponsors, it was Charles Hiltermann of Rothmans who along with Dunhill partnered with the event for 17 years. Another long term event sponsor was Avis who can add to their sponsorship some individually sponsored riders who took podium finishes. Chairman of the Transvaal Horse Issue 20 SPORTING HORSE

Spotted horses have been in existence since prehistoric times, but a breed within a species is defined as having a distinctive appearance and typically having been developed by deliberate selection under the guidance of a governing body. Knabstrupper is to date the highest achiever in FEI Para-dressage per capita participating. However, character is not the only trait that makes this breed exceptional and more than able as a modern athlete. The quality in their “type is the result of years of selection for performance with the first performance assessments that started as early as 1971 by the Knabstrupper foreningen for Danmark. The latter being the Knabstrupper Motherbook Registry in Denmark, also known as the KNN. This governing body also functions abroad to assists countries outside of Denmark in preserving the quality of the Knabsrupper through performance assessments and registration. Selective breeding has led to a consistent type with minimal genetic variability. However, type can be categorized into baroque and sport type.

The performance testing is done annually with more than four highly educated equine specialists evaluating each presented individual (foals/gelding/mares/stallions) at a central location in each country on their conformation, movement (loose as well as ridden test), jumping ability (free as well as under saddle) and a full veterinary examination keeping type into consideration. Approved individuals will receive a KNN number while stallions that have passed their ridden performance test will receive a breeding license that entitles them to stand at stud and produce offspring eligible for registration. The Knabstrupper breed is considered by some European countries as a warmblood and approved licensed warmbloods, including SAWHS, may be eligible to take part in registered Knabstrupper KNN main book breeding.

After several years in the world of South African showjumping, Team Nissan will be stepping up a gear as they expand their team to include some of the most promising youngsters that are on the equestrian circuit.

H

aving started their involvement in showjumping in 2011, leading vehicle manufacturer Nissan have made the decision to expand their showjumping team to now include development riders Oscar Ncube and Zoleka Mosiah as well as Lexi Stais. These talented three youngsters will join those already riding for Nissan namely Barry Taylor, Lorette Knowles-Taylor and Vincent Moemise. “We selected these athletes based on their very impressive achievements to date. Our team is one that we feel can compete for titles, enrich the lives of those less fortunate through our development clinics as well as ensure that we strengthen the showjumping sport in our country” comments Lorette – an extremely accomplished rider herself having ranked amongst SA’s top 5 riders every year for the last ten years. The determined Oscar Ncube has already competed at the highest level having jumped in the 1.50m competitions and World Cup Qualifiers. He was chosen as a member of the first ever SA Showjumping team at the All Africa Games in 2007 held in Algeria. Oscar is a full time professional rider who rideworks for Barry Taylor and teaches in his spare time,“My plan for 2014 is to jump the mini derby in October at Kyalami Equestrian Park as well as some 1.50 classes in the remaining shows of the year. I need to improve my hands and upper body and plan on doing this by doing plenty of exercises such as jumping lines gymnastics, cavaletti’s and so on.” Selected to represent SA Showjumping at the second Youth Olympic Games in August, Lexi Stais is surely the most talented young rider in the country. “This girl brings with her an energy and determination that every sponsor would like to have in their team. She’s focused on her goals and is certainly one to watch for the future,” says Lorette who has been Lexi’s coach for the last five years. 34

The last addition to the team is Zoleka Mosiah, the academic matriculant who was shortlisted for the 2014 Youth Olympics. She brings with her a sound Equitation base having made the Gauteng team for the SA National Championships three years in a row and now competes at the 1.30m level. With prelims and finals left in 2014, Zo won’t find too much time to ride this year, “Whilst I currently have my head buried in my books, I do however have an important riding goal in mind and that is to become a consistent and competitive 1.30 rider. In order to achieve this I need to get to know my horse a little better as I have only been riding her for a few months now. I am absolutely confident that we will produce better rounds as time goes on. In terms of what I need to improve on, it would be to have a more consistent rhythm throughout my courses. I tend to have rails early on because I lack a strong starting rhythm. I would also like to work on a ‘separation of controls’ meaning that I need to work on keeping my upper body still whilst being soft in my elbows and hands, thus making my riding smoother.” Having been in the team before its expansion Vincent Moemise welcomes his new team mates, “Oz, Lex and Zo are superbly dedicated riders and we most certainly welcome them with open arms as they will no doubt strengthen our team presence on the South African circuit. In terms of my personal goals, I would like to jump a 1.40 show track before year end however I have a lot of improvement that needs to be done especially with my hands. Barry is an incredible coach though so I know that anything is possible with him by my side.” Stalwarts of Team Nissan, Lorette and Barry have a healthy competitive relationship so says Lorette, “We’re both super competitive, with neither of us going down without a fight. Debates on our horses, our riding and our training techniques can get heated at times, but it’s only because we both push ourselves to consistently be the best that we can be. Both Barry and I will continue to work together both inside and outside of the competition ring in order to improve these talented

youngsters. I hope too that they will learn from us and the example that we strive to set.” Having recently won the Nissan 6 bar competition jumping a mammoth 2 meters, Lorette will be competing on the same horse, Nissan Nabab Forever in this year’s Galencia Property South African Derby, “The Galloping Grandpa is 19 years old and still loves his jumping, so I will give him a go this year in the main classes. I also hope to end the year in 1.50’s on Nissan Epsom Emma. On the other end of the scale I have a superb four year old called Nissan Cento’s Boy whom I can’t wait to get going on. In terms of where I need to improve, I want to cash in on some more consistent clear rounds in the top classes.” “A huge thank you to Nissan for their investment and belief in our sport and our athletes,” concludes one of the best athletes ever to grace the sport of showjumping, Barry Taylor. “I look forward to a year ahead where we continue to love what we do, do it to the best of our ability and strengthen the competition on the South African circuit. Our team will continue to work together on a daily basis as we drive ourselves to an all new high.”

ARE YOU ON THE RIGHT TRACK?

When building an arena, choosing the right surface is vital.

MARTIN COLLINS, MARTIN COLLINS Logo and POLYTRACK, ECOTRACK, ACTIV-TRACK and CLOPF FIBRE are registered trademarks.

Arena surfaces have changed considerably in the last 10 years. Reasons for this include ongoing research and interest in sport science, veterinary science and better management of elite competition horses. Technology has improved resulting in modern surfaces playing an important role in maintaining soundness and allowing horses to compete at their best. When considering riding surfaces, there are four distinct types available in South Africa, namely turf, wax coated, sand, dry sand combined with fibre or rubber chip. Each has its advocates. TURF Well kept turf, assuming the rainfall is neither heavy nor scarce, is ideal for a working and competing horse. Turf is the traditional footing for all equestrian sports including racing. When a horse works on well cared for turf, both compression and a forward movement, or sheer, is expected; the amount is dependent on the gait and pace. Turf supplies a firm base, has free drainage, resilience, and is self-regenerating (with restricted use) and usable under most weather conditions. Well managed turf also has a deep root structure which helps hold the soil together. The importance of good ground for competition is vital to the success of the sport, especially at the higher levels and for racing where horses are travelling at great speed. Turf maintenance is a science on its own and requires a knowledgeable grounds man and is labour intensive. It requires a specific and specialized management programme.

46

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

ALL WEATHER - WAX All-weather surfaces were developed to allow horses to work in situations where turf cannot be sustained (due to either over use or climate). Turf however is, the “blueprint” which all other man-made surfaces aim to replicate. The closest equivalent, without the need to “manage rain fall” would be a wax coated surface with an all weather drainage system. Phumelela have recently installed an all weather Polytrack at their Randjesfontein training centre. Fairview Racetrack has an all-weather Polytrack which is used both for training and racing. It has saved six race meetings, since its installation, that would have otherwise have been cancelled due to weather. Gold Circle has installed a Polytrack training surface at Summerveld Training Centre and a new Polytrack race track at Greyville. Correct maintenance is important to ensure optimal performance and durability. The capital costs are high but the benefits of consistent, safe surfaces, which are easy to care for, are well worth the expense. The main advantage of an all weather surface is that it requires less maintenance and is consistent through all weather conditions. It is worth noting that most of these surfaces function in a wide range of temperatures (-12°C to +40°C). The durability of the surface is

dependent upon the purity of the coating and the premium surfaces have the wax molecularly bonded to the raw ingredients. Other coatings available include wax blends, gels or oils; these tend to be less costly but require regeneration more frequently.

DRY SAND BASED SURFACE Another option would be a “dry sand based surface” typically a local or silica sand which is mixed or topped with another material such as PVC, rubber or synthetic fibres.

SAND The addition of fibres to sand is becoming the most Historically in this country, the accepted norm has been common, as it provides the best solution for year round to level an area and put down river sand. One may use. The correct blend of fibres provides a root structure assume that sand is sand, but this is not true. Generally to allow the horse to work on top of the surface and also two types of river sand are available. The first is improves the moisture retention properties as well as dredged from a local river. These sands are fairly giving the surface consistent energy return. coarse and abrasive and from the action of the water have rounded granules which act like marbles and tend PVC and rubber are less popular choices as they tend to ride deep or move so much that you ride through the to “ride deep” and do not assist with water retention. sand onto the base. It is very difficult to maintain Although the capital investment is less, very regular consistent going where the sand maintenance is needed and “top up” moves every time the horse strikes more often required as it gets “Turf is the blue print the ground. The foot slides further washed away in heavy rains. If the which all other man-made surface is allowed to dry out or in sand than in turf risking fetlock hyperextension. The second type surfaces aim to replicate” become deep, the horses are at of river sand available is from a increased risk from soft tissue quarry which produces specific damage. It is also more difficult to sands for the building industry. These crushed sands manage the “going” on a dry surface as this is affected have very angular granules and bind together and both by the moisture content and by how the track is provide a more consistent surface but the downside is maintained. that over time compact hard and require aggressive maintenance to keep them loose. Either way, the choice of surface is important and is a significant investment. The best way to decide which Silica sands are the popular choice in Europe and the surface is best suited to your needs and budget is to UK, where specific grades of sands are used in discuss it with the specialist surface manufacturers. different surface types. Again granule size and shape is crucial and should be the main consideration when purchasing silica sand for your arena. The benefit of silica sand is that it holds together more when wet, allowing horses to work on top of the surface and does not shift as much as river sand. It is also less abrasive. Like any other sand surface it does require a lot of water and without additives can ride dead.

JADE HOOKE REPORT M

y journey as an equine athlete (showjumper) is one that has taken me many years, miles, smiles and tears. It began as a keen 6 year old rider in the very small ‘pond’ of St Francis Bay, South Africa, but has recently taken me to the very big ‘ocean’ in the UK. Although I did not always see myself living overseas, it has always been a dream to ride in the competition ring at the Olympics. This is of course easier said than done, with many sacrifices to be made, one step having to be taken at a time and hard work aiming towards intermediate goals and achievements focused upon - all of which will hopefully result in me successfully participating in the Olympic Games. Two major steps forward that have recently been taken are achieving a third in the Hickstead Derby and qualifying for the World Equestrian Games. My dream of competing at the Hickstead Derby began in 2011 after I won my second Derby in South Africa - after this accomplishment I developed an unrelenting obsession and conviction that my horse, A New Era, and I could tackle the biggest derby in the world. The road towards actually doing so looked impossible and I sit on the other side of achieving the goal of competing at the Hickstead Derby wondering how I made it in one piece. I cannot express in detail how challenged, excited, scared, sad, and committed I have been in the last 9 months, but what I can say is that every bit of my journey so far was worth it having lead to a 3rd place in the Hickstead 48

Derby on my 17 year old equine partner ‘A New Era’ - it was everything I dreamt of and more! For now my focus is on the World Equestrian Games and as my horse’s strength is within the derby arena it will be a big challenge for us. Qualifying for this event was not looking promising but 5 days before the cut off date I managed to get myself to a qualifying round with my trusted partner. The Olympics remains my biggest goal but with my horse being 17 years of age things are looking difficult - I look forward nonetheless and shall keep working towards competing at the highest possible level here in the UK and Europe, making my passion my profession. Showjumping has always been a ‘fun’ activity for me but with the incredible standard of competition and the serious, supportive investors in the UK, it is my desire to pursue showjumping as my life time profession. I currently ride and train at Hickstead under the world class Irish rider, Shane Breen - this in itself is a dream come true! To my sponsor Western Shoppe, my horses magic-handsman Jacques Versveld and my good friends, family and business partner, it’s them who keep me going - thank you! My motivational quote is : Runs of good and bad luck have one thing in common : they don’t last forever.

G

ood breeding and the importation of Friesians from the Netherlands has seen the quality of the Friesian horse improve dramatically along with the Friesian now being recognised for their superb sport ability, tall, fine modern conformation, beautiful movement and the famous Friesian temperament, has increased the popularity of this breed making the sight of these black beauties quite common at many of the top dressage competitions not only in South Africa, but world-wide. SA Champs 2014 saw a phenomenal amount of entries from all

over the country. Most impressive was the number of Friesians now competing at a National level. 15 Friesians! Not only is the popularity of the Friesian horse growing in the dressage arena, but there is a marked improvement in the horses and riders. They all need to be commended for their dedication to the Friesian breed and to dressage. As the Friesian fraternity, we are proud to call Chere Burger “one of our own. Chere has been part of the progression of the Friesian in dressage in South Africa. Chere Burger and Niekie Pienaar of Adelprag Stud have dedicated many years to promoting

the Friesian at high levels of dressage. The culmination of this is seeing Chere ride Anders 451 at WEG 2014. In between her training overseas Chere managed to be home in SA for the most prestigious dressage event - South African Dressage Champs 2014 and managed to retain her title for the 4th year as SA Adult Individual Champion with Adelprag Arjen Vb Ster Sport (Jasper 366x Feitse 293). This formidable duo are also the Individual Freestyle Reserve Champion. Adelprag Eelke Vb Ster (Tsjerk 328 x Sjaard 320) and Chere received an impressive 66.25% becoming the Medium Reserve Champion. A truly world class rider who impressed the crowds yet again. Adelprag’s dedication to dressage was very apparent at SA Champs 2014. In the Elementary Consolation Challenge Tania Denny and Vincent the Viking placed 3rd. The amount of entries in the classes this year were large even at the higher levels with 28 horses entered for Prix St George to name one. New to the Prix St George classes Reinoud fan e’ Homar Vb Ster Sport (Beart 411 X Nykle 309) and Calet de Vos placed 8th overall but had to scratch from the rest of the competition due to injury to Reinoud. Tsjabring 429 Sport (Brandus 345 x Tjimme 275 )and Jenny Renken received a

fantastic 3rd place in the warm up but sadly had to withdraw from the championship and her place in the KZN team, due to injury. Luckily both stallions are well on the road to recovery. Another proud moment for the FPSSA Friesians is the 3rd place in the Inter Provincial Open Team Championships by the North– West Team. An impressive team with 3 Friesians! Chere Burger & Adelprag Arjen Sabine Klehe & Adelprag Tsjerk Wium van Huyssteen & Adleprag Menno Jan van Deventer & Eeh Jazz It is at competitions like SA Champs that it becomes apparent that the Friesians are fast becoming a popular ride in dressage circles. ach year the Show committee of the FPSSA organise the FPSSA National Show. This is an opportunity for Breeders, Friesian owners and lovers of the Friesian Horse to come together and enjoy the sport ability and sheer beauty of the Friesian Horse. A FIRST AT THIS YEARS SHOW As the leading and only internationally recognised Friesian Studbook in South Africa, the FPSSA are very proud to

announce that in keeping with the mother studbook the KFPS in the Netherlands, that this year’s National show will be the first time that South Africa will be presenting Stallions for the Stallion Inspection rounds. Each year in the Netherlands the Dutch breeders are given the opportunity to take their best stallions to the Stallion inspection rounds. These rounds consist of 3 rounds with only the best stallions of each round making it through to the next round. If after the 3rd round the stallion meets the strict criteria for a breed stallion the Stallion Jury will then ask the stallion to be presented for a 70day test.

Issue 20 SPORTING HORSE

59

As its name implies the stallions are rigorously tested over the 70 days . At the end of the 70 days the stallions that make it through are then presented in Leeuwarden at the Stallion Show as the new KPFS Studbook stallions for that year. What makes this so prestigious is that 100’s of horses start out in the early rounds but only 4-5 horses will finally be selected as Studbook stallions. These Studbook stallions become the breeding stallions of the breed. It is through this rigorous selection process that the FPSSA Friesian has maintained its high standard of breeding and ensures the future of the Friesian Horse world-wide. This year’s National show provides South Africa with the opportunity to have their own Studbook stallions. 60

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

The Stallion 1st and 2nd rounds will be judged at the FPSSA National Show 2014 and promises to be a highlight. The stallion rounds will become a yearly class at the National Show and form part of the show programme, with the opportunity for all members and spectators to see just how far the Friesian horse has progressed in South Africa. Along with all the traditional classes – Harness, Dressage, In hand, Under Saddle and the very popular Strictly Come Showing, this year’s Show will continue to impress. We hope to attract as many of our Approved Breeding stallions both Studbook and Foalbook, providing an opportunity for breeders to see what stallions are available for breeding in South Africa.

Our Future Friesian riders are a very important part of the show and the childrens class show the fantastic temperament of the Friesian Horse. The FPSSA, although a non-profit organisation, are very aware of their own social responsibility and are proud of our association with the Highveld Horse Care Unit and will again be donating a percentage of all entries to them along with many other opportunities during the show to help the Highveld Horse Care Unit raise more funds for their worthy cause. The FPSSA National Show will be an event that no horse lover will want to miss- a chance to be educated and entertained. THE TOP CLASSES AT

THE HARCOURTS REAL ESTATE SHOW JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW OF SOUTH AFRICA – AUGUST 2014 This year the SA show jumping championship for adults was contested at the lovely Shongweni Club grounds – the show was hosted by Mrs Sue Pieters, who, for the past few years utilised the Cyril Geoghan cycling stadium in Durban. Since the bulk of competitors travel down from Joburg for this event, Shongweni was a welcome bit closer, with good facilities and the attractive setting with good weather making a welcome break from the Highveld freeze.

T

he rules for the main competition allow for a “warm up” competition where nearly all the riders opted to give their horses an easy canter around one of the lower level Open tracks, choosing anything from 1,30m to 1,40m in height as opposed to the 1,45m welcome stakes on offer. So it was a huge surprise when the first qualifier for the SA Championship class boasted 52 entries! This is an unheard of number of competitors in the 1,50m division in South Africa. Back in the 1980s we had strong classes with about 35 rider/ horse combinations, but this number dwindled to about 10 or 12 in the 1990s. Gradually the depth and quality of horsepower and riding skills has improved in the last 10 years, thanks to many riders importing horses and a burgeoning

68

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

Warmblood breeding industry by local entrepreneurs, as well as having course designers from Europe to build for the local riders, and an enormous improvement in the quality of the surfaces demanded by riders for competition. We have also been fortunate to have clinics offered privately and by the federation from top show jumping coaches. The 1st qualifier was an A2 competition – this is a 1 round competition where the best result reflects the least penalties in the quickest time. The visiting course designer was Bernardo Costa Cabral from Portugal. Bernardo is a FEI Level 3 course designer who has been nurtured by Olympic CD, Bob Ellis. He has been to SA previously and knows our standard. Having 50 odd starters in the 1st qualifier meant

that no riders could afford to relax – everyone needed to go well in order to finish in the top 24 who would start in the final class. A slow round with an unlucky rail probably wouldn’t cut it…so the pressure was on from the start and an exciting class ensued, with the speedy Jeanne Engela on Chanel van de Zeshoek emerging the winner with a clear round in 65.97 seconds from Anne-Marie Esslinger and Alessio in 66.41 seconds, and Dominey Alexander on Alzu Barracuda in 67.62 seconds. Samantha McIntosh with Let’s Win, Sean Neill with Crystallise, Nicola Sime-Riley with Sunny Park Stables Connoisseur and Anne-Marie Esslinger with Alzu Oregon followed in the line up. Then came Capital Rafika DÓr ridden by Jodi Pieters, HSB Romulus and Sonia Kroon, C Ultra with Govett Triggoll, and Shaun Neill with Clyde Z. The next morning everyone anticipated a much shorter start list for the 2nd qualifier – the KZN Grand Prix – but not so….49 riders started in this class which made for a lot of pressure. Everyone knew they had to do well in order to make the top 24 for Sunday’s big one! This competition involved a tactical first round with all clears proceeding to a jump off against the clock. Here 14

combinations produced clears around a good sized track with a friendly water construction and an inviting treble combination, though the pressure was on from the first bending line related in 6 strides on the turn. The time allowed was tight enough to give another 3 riders just 1 time penalty. The jump off was quick, and beautifully ridden by Dominey Alexander, riding Enjoy 88, putting the squeeze on from an early draw. No-one managed to catch him, though Shaun Neill with Clyde Z tried hard – he finished a second slower in 38.26 to Dominey’s 37.29. Barry Taylor riding Quentin Jansen’s Counter Attack was 3rd, whilst Nicola Sime-Riley with her other Consuelo horse, Sunny Park El Paso, came 4th, closely followed by Bronwyn Short on Fountain of Love and Georgina Ratcliffe (riding her debut 1,50m!) on Change your Mind in 6th spot. Some of the horses that did well the previous day were again in the lower placings of this class. Most riders waited with bated breath to see whether they had qualified for the actual SA Championship competition. It was hard to tell how the point system would work out. Good rounds like Callaho Lissabon with Mandy Johnstone, who had just 4 penalties in both the qualifiers, didn’t make the final cut, whilst HSB Romulus which had a good place in

the 1st qualifier but an unfortunate elimination in the 2nd one, as well as Geogina Rowand who did great, but rode only one of the qualifiers, did make the top 24. There was much disappointment when the list was published, but it was inevitable with such a large and strong field of contestants. One might have to review qualification for major events in the future, if we continue to have such phenomenal entries in the big classes, so as not to have to overjump horses in order to qualify. The Harcourts Real Estate SA Championship class is a 2 round competition with all horses that have not been disqualified after the 1st round eligible to do the 2nd round over the full course. This is an arduous task. Fortunately the weather wasn’t too hot and a light breeze was a relief for the horses wh0 worked hard. Bernardo set a strong series of tests which opened with a related line of 5 strides on the straight into a bending 8 stride line. A sharp right loop led to the treble, oxer in, then 2 strides to a tall vertical and 1 to an oxer, followed by a comfortable 6 stride distance to a large oxer. Then you looped left to a tall vertical, bent right on a forward 7 to the water and collected for a square oxer facing the judges’ box. Most riders would naturally have gone left after this line, and Issue 20 SPORTING HORSE

71

Nicola Sime- Riley

Linda Rabie did just that…but actually there was a circle right handed into the bottom corner to return over a tall plank. The final line caused the most penalties. Going away from the gate a substantial triple bar led onto a forward 5 or very tight 6 steps to a tall double of verticals on the down slope. Both of these had water trays at the back of them, which encourages the horses to get a bit close. The 11A element caused by far the most penalties on the track. The slope and many changes of direction planned by the course designer tended to unbalance horses, and riders had to have their mounts well between the hand and leg all the way round the course. The final fence was an empty oxer on 5 ½ strides after the double. Here too there was some disappointment…. On the day just 5 combinations managed clear rounds the first time around the course. These were Felix van de Mispelaere, owned by the Slade family, with Jonathan Clarke in the saddle, qualified to go at no. 11, Sunny Park Stables El Paso, qualified to ride at no. 12, and then 3 of the top qualifiers, Enjoy 68 with Dominey Alexander, who rode at position no. 20, followed by Sunny Park Stables Connoisseur with Nicola Sime-Riley, and Clyde Z at no.23 ridden by Shaun Neill. Top qualifier, Chanel van der Zeshoek with 72

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

Jeanne Engela had 1 down, as did 8 other horses. The running order for the 2nd round was in reverse order of qualification, and 5 riders opted out of doing this round. Again there were just 5 clears, but only 2 were the same as the 1st round to go forward to the jump off. The others had 1 down to finish in the good placings, whilst Dion Boardman, riding clear in the 2nd round moved up after a rail down in the 1st round. Nicola Sime-Riley went first in the jump off - Connoisseur had an uncharacteristic mistake over the black Wrangler vertical for 4 penalties in a time of 44.71. Shaun Neill went slower but beautifully clear with Clyde Z, and incurred 2 time penalties in the jump off at 49.65 secs. A great win for a solid combination – well done Shaun! And an excellent show put on by Sue Pieters, which from the early notification of stable plan to the well timed vet check, ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all. The generous sponsorship of competitions is always valued by the competitors who will definitely try to support Harcourts Real Estate in their property interests in future. Thank you to all those who worked so hard to make this show the success that it was!

pring is here and it is the time of year when many mare owners are making decisions about what stallion they should choose for their mares. If you are new to breeding how do you go about this?

Firstly you need to know your mare’s strengths, talents and weaknesses. One of the reasons for the SA Warmblood Horse Society’s existence is the recording of warmblood horses bred or imported into South Africa that are acceptable by virtue of their carefully selected pedigrees and recorded via inspections or competition performance by virtue of their excellence in the performance ring. So when you buy a warmblood, ask for its Birth Notification or Recording papers and be sure it has been stamped and signed of by the SA Warmblood Horse Society. If you are unsure phone the society and check up on the horse. The papers should give a full name including the prefix of the stud that bred it, a number allocated by the society concerned, date of birth, colour, markings, name of breeder, sex along with a four generation pedigree . Sport horses have been selectively bred for show jumping, dressage and eventing. Let’s touch briefly on the vast subject of talented descendants. Go to the trouble to learn the names of the famous progenitors during the 20th century as they form clusters in pedigrees or are seen in line breeding where they multiply

80

the genetic impact of their potency. Here are some very brief references to well known lines found in a random range of SA Warmblood licensed stallions. For jumping breeding the Holstein lines of the imposing Capitol I and elegant Landgraf I are often found combined in successful pedigrees, for example: COTTAGE SON (thoroughbred brought in to lighten, correct and quicken the Holsteiner horses and did so very successfully) CORPORAL CAPITAN CAPITOL I Famous Son CASSINI I Grand Son CUMANO ( dam sire: Landgraf I ) GG Son DON CUMARCO dh Vjf Bunders (BWP) SAW Licensed (dams sire Darco) The Belgian Ambassador status stallion Darco seen in the dam line of Don Cumarco, is also found as the grand sire of the newly premium licensed show jumping stallion Rivervale Parco’s Son. DARCO Famous Son Grand Son

PARCO Rivervale PARCO’S SON (SAW) Licensed (dam’s grand sire Cor de la Beyere)

PARCO’S SON

CAPITAL’S COLNARDO RAMIRO Famous Son RANDAL Z The Holstein bred stallion was a line that popularised Dutch breeding and is found still in top pedigrees today. Beezie Maddens Cortes C BWP (Randel Z/ Darco/ Etna du Linon) won the Bronze Medal of the 2014 Alltech World Equestrian Games and has Ramiro as grandsire. In South Africa Dageraad Ubbe has the same grandsire while Branic Figaro has Randel Z as the dam’s sire. Optimum van de Wellington found producing jumping talent via our mare lines was by Randel Z. CAPITOL I Famous Son Grand Son GG Son CAPITOL I Famous Son Grand Son GG Son

INDOCTRO ONDOL V ( grand dam sire: Landgraf I ) Beach Haven ON TRACK (SAW) SAW Licensed (dams sire Little Mayfair Wunderbar) CARTHAGO CICERO Z ( dam sire: Randel Z ) HERCIRO van T’Kiezelhof (BWP) SAW Licensed

Learn the jargon of pedigrees. A horse’s dam line is the mare or mother’s line. Breeders believe the mare has a greater influence on the foal so the dam’s sire is considered very important in the

DAGERAAD UBBE pedigree as is the mare’s mother’s sire. Sport horse breeders often reflect a brief pedigree after the horse’s name e.g SWEET TARA (sire name/ dam’s sire name/ dam, dam (grand dam of the mare) sire name) as is the case in the list of stallions licensed by the SAWHS. Another cornerstone in pedigrees is Cor de la Bryère, a French bred stallion who revolutionised show jumping breeding. COR DE LA BREYERE Famous Son CALYPSO II Grand Son CONTENDER (dam sire: Ramiro) GG Son CLARINIUS (Holst) SAW Licensed (dam sire: Capitol I) GG Son CON CORIANO (Holst) SAW Licensed (dam sire:Coriano) Cor de la Bryère is also the grand sire Zenith KWPN (Rash R/ Fuego de Prelet/ Burgraaf) ridden by Jeroen Dubbeldam to win the final four jump off of the 2014 Alltech World Equestrian Games and take gold. With Burgraaf in the back of the dam’s line again you find this pedigree combined with Landgraf I. Casall Ask Holst (Caretino/ Lavall I/ Raimond) ridden by Rolf Goren Bengtsson again finds Cor de la Bryère a generation further back in the pedigree while on the dam’s line, Landgraf I sits a generation nearer. They came fourth.

BEACH HAVEN ON TRACK

CON CORIANO In South Africa our most successful foundation stallion has been the Hanovarian Wachmann III imported by Gerry du Toit and which later stood with Pat Pohl of Pohlands Stud and produced numerous open jumping horses and some with movement too. WEDEKIND WACHMANN III Little Mayfair WUNDERBAR (SAW) Licensed (dams sire: Drabant) Davenport WEDEKIND (SAW) Licensed (dams sire: Dolerit) This breeding is still sought after today and Wunderbar blood in the mare gives particularly talented offspring although they may at times be a little old fashioned in type. Dressage breeding in South Africa still lags behind European standards but in the past years there has been a great effort to bring in lines that can enhance our breeding. Remember a jumping line may produce movement if extremely carefully combined with dressage lines but a pure dressage pedigree rarely ever produces a jumper. The Hanoverian stallion Donnerhall is one of the best known dressage lines and very popular for producing rideable horses. Flemmingh founded a dressage line when his pedigree showed him to be jumping bred. DONNERHALL Famous Son DON FREDERICO DON NATIELLO (Hann) SAW Licensed (dams sire: Natiello xx)

QUANTICO LANDGRAF I LACAPO (sire: Landgraf I) Founds a dressage line FLEMMINGH (dams grand sire: Cor de la Breyère) URON M (KWPN) SAW Licensed Also interesting to note is that LASSITER the open show jumper is a direct son of Lacapo. One of our recently licensed stallions with a most interesting pedigree was imported by Compton house Stud and is called Quantico who originates from Quattro B. Quattro B was a French bred horse that went to Oldenburg and the French were never known to breed dressage horses but he went on to established a fresh new dressage dynasty. QUATTRO B Famous Son Grand Son

Do not forget the good thoroughbred lines in South Africa that have been so successful in establishing our breed. They bring quickness of mind, lightening of the frame and elasticity, have good endurance and improve the hindquarters. These lines include Bahadur, Craftsman, Signification, Esplendor, Noble Chieftain, Pyrmont, Jerez, Nile Game, Colonel Pickering, Lancer, Sharp Romance and Tilden. 1. I gather you commenced your riding career with Vee Laros at Phaeton Park – tell us a little about those younger years?

4. After you had concluded your schooling, did you move to another yard and tell us about any other horses you rode at that time?

I had my first lesson as a 4 year old at Honeydew Nursery School. After that I rode casually at a few Riding Schools until I was 14 years old and had started in Juniors, at which time I moved across to Vee Laros. Natalie taught me on various horses, including Note of Freedom whom I got as a 3 year old and produced to A Grade with her help. I literally outgrew Note of Freedom and sold her to an up-andcoming junior star in Lorette Knowles, who had a wonderful few years jumping her at the top level.

I rode at Phaeton Park for a good 10 years, by which time I had been in the Army for 2 years and completed 3 years of Farrier School. Soon, thereafter, I was able to afford to buy my first property, which I have now been resident in for 22 years. I have a small arena, 6 stables and enough paddock space for the same number of horses. I have had many horses over the years from novice to A Grades having produced them all to a point and then sold them on.

2. Did your parents support and influence your interest in equestrian sport?

5. When did you first consider training to be a Farrier and what brought this about?

My parents were fantastic with their support of my riding and came to each and every event that I attended. My father supported my livery bills and lessons for many years, until I could afford to take over. As a child my mom paid for my weekly lessons at the various riding schools I rode at when I was younger.

The idea of attending a Farrier School came about when I was in the Army (SADF) and got chatting to a an army farrier, who told me about the facility. I ended up doing my apprenticeship with a good riding friend at the time, namely Sean Allnut, who has also jumped at the top level on his horse King’s Advocate. Sean is currently one of the best farriers in the Gauteng area, shoeing for many well known yards including Farnham Stables.

3. When did you first get your own horse and what events did you compete in at that time?

6. Where and with whom did you do your apprenticeship and how many years does it take to complete this training?

My dad bought me my first horse when I was 14 from a lady who stabled at Vee’s, hence ending up riding at Phaeton Park for so many years. He was a sweet horse which I jumped up to JC.

We did our apprenticeship with a renowned farrier at the time called Renier van Rooyen , who was a real task master , but what we learned from him was invaluable. His practice including shoeing race horses, jumpers and also for stud farms and he was considered the best corrective farrier at that time.

HORSEPROFILE RIDER PROFILE 7. You must have a very hectic schedule with the business to run – how do you manage to travel to so many ‘away’ shows? I have the most fantastic life-style in that I love both my riding and my shoeing and with this balance neither are a chore at all. Being your own boss is also such a bonus and allows one the opportunity to organize time away for Shows more easily. 8. Tell us a little about your thoughts on training your horses and the programme you follow at home? Keeping your horse happy and sound is always a concern – a horse that enjoys his job is a huge advantage. At the end of the day, we as individual human beings, have many stresses trying to maintain our position at the top level but obviously we can’t do it without our horses. Keeping your horse happy and fresh in his mind is imperative. I do as little jumping as possible at home to try to increase my chances of having a sound horse for years to come. Obviously different horses require various preparations and approaches, but now I have learnt to do as little as possible prior to a Show. Funnily enough I used to be exactly the opposite in years gone by and I used to work my horses particularly hard just before an event. However, thank goodness I have learnt a few things over the years, as in less is sometimes more. 9. Have you had many challenges to overcome along the way to continue riding at this highest level of Show Jumping in SA? It is a real challenge to get to the top of our highest level of jumping in South Africa and I think the next challenge is staying there. 10. On the lighter side, when you have time off between your business and shows, what other pursuits do you enjoy? My downtime is taken up my numerous pets at home – dogs, cats chickens, ducks, budgies, hedgehogs and guinea-pigs. I did a lot of motorbike riding on a superbike that I bought and did many track days at Kyalami. Quite an adrenalin rush when you get into it. I also really enjoy horse racing and follow all the national events that take pace on a weekly basis. 90

HORSE PROFILE

Tanik Hune By Yvonne Bolton / Photos by T&B Images

1. When and where did you first get to see Tanik Hune? Tanik Hune, who is currently my No 1 and top horse, was brought into South Africa by Maud Aarts, a good friend of mine and possibly the best horseman I have come across. She is the most underated rider that has ever set foot on SA soil and can prepare a horse for jumping, dressage, showing and eventing all at the very top level. She gave him the ‘stable name’ of MOOSE which has remained and to this day everyone knows him as Moose. He is 18.0hh and really impressive. 2. I believe he initially came out for Maud Aarts to school and sell on – tell us a little about this partnership? Maud played around with him for two years till he was a 6 year old, which was the best thing that could have happened, giving him time to adjust to the South African conditions. 3. When you took over the ride he was then 6 years old – give us a little insight into his progress at this stage of his jumping career? I started him at 1.10m level and really enjoyed him. The plan

was for me to produce him for her to sell and initially he was quite hectic in that he was very ‘spooky’. The first jump that I ever rode him to summed him up completely – about 4 strides away from it, he reared up, spun around and ran off in the opposite direction. However, I managed to get a good tune out of him within a few months and six months later we were jumping competitively in the 1.20m classes. 4. At which point were you able to purchase Tanik Hune and what qualities did he possess that impressed you? We had a client of Ronnie Lawrence’s come and try him and he went beautifully for the prospective buyer. It looked like the deal would be done, until he failed the vetting hopelessly. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me, as I knew the horse was sound and had a great future as a jumper. I then beg, borrowed and stole money and bought him from Maud for myself. I knew he had the scope to jump the big classes but he was still very immature in his brain and I then spent 18 months in the 1.30m events. Issue 20 SPORTING HORSE

HORSE PROFILE

5. Once you made the move to stable Tanik Hune at Dominey Alexander’s your advancement proceeded quite rapidly. Give us a some background on the shows you entered and his climb up the grades? I had a rushed breakup with a girlfriend at the time at whose place I was keeping him and I wasn’t really organized enough to take him to my property. Karen Alexander very kindly offered me a stable and this also proved to be a blessing in disguise, as I then spent time training with Dominey, who helped me immensely in choosing classes for Moose. At this point in time we went from jumping 1.30m to jumping our first World Cup Qualifier in Cape Town in 2 months and the first two years at the top level were really learning curves for Moose. I could quite easily have 3 – 4 fences down, while he was figuring things out. I moved him home 3 years ago and the last 2 years have been absolutely fantastic. He really has kind of grown at the top level and is rarely out of the prizes in all the really big classes, such as the WCQ’s and recently achieved 3rd Place in the South African Championship. 6. 94

How important is temperament over talent in your

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

opinion and what sort of personality does Tanik Hune have? There is such a fine line between temperament and talent. You will always have horses that are super-talented but do not want to do the job. You get less talented horses that love their job and have great success. I guess when temperament and talent meet in the m idle such as Capital Colonado you have a horse that is good enough to go to Europe and jump in the World Equestrian Games or the Olympic Games. 7. All top horses have some quirks – what are Tanik Hune’s and what is he like round the yard? Moose has a bit of all the good attributes, but his best point is his braveness. I can count on one hand the amount of times he has second guessed me at a jump whether at home or in the ring. He has loads of scope and more than enough care. 8. What have been your most memorable achievements together and what made them very special? My year has started off very successfully with a 4th at KEP in the World Cup Qualifier. Only a foot in the water and a 9th in the KZN WCQ and as I mentioned earlier the 3rd place in the SA Jumping Championships. Moose is my horse soulmate and I hope we can spend many more years jumping at the top level.

YOUR LEARNING PROCESS “The greatest darkness in the world becomes powerless and then disappears in the light of higher learning!”

S

o much emphasis is being placed on getting a better education! It is not only wonderful, but the possibilities are very exciting! While spending endless hours reading and researching AHS and many other nasty Equine Viruses to ensure accurate material for my students in their Veterinary studies, I discovered that in spite of the information available to us in modern times, there are still some things that are not as freely written about! Alarmed at the rapid rate in which the continent’s Equine population is being hammered by viruses, job losses and the decline in the growth of the Equine industry in SA is also being hammered! I set about to find out more, and while doing so I got motivated into setting up an organisation to assist in educating the horse owning public on the depths of these viruses and the extent at which they are in our midst! In asking questions I began to understand that even many knowledgeable horse owners are not aware of the dangers all these viruses really present! Over a period of the next 6 months SOH (Save our Horses) will be making a presence with our Southern African awareness campaign involving 6 killer viruses that seriously threaten our beloved Equines and the Industry as a whole. Many horse owners have lost beloved and valuable horses to AHS. It is on the increase: fact! However, so is EEV, West Nile, Rabies, Middleburg and a few others that are all too rapidly creeping down from the north of us and making their presence felt in stable yards, farms and Studs across Southern Africa. There are many horse owners in rural communities that are dammed for the lack of care they give to their horses. I ventured into the heart of some of these rural areas to discover why this happens and asked lots of questions. They have never been 100

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

taught about equine diseases, vaccinations, de-worming etc. Not one of the hundreds of people I spoke to had even heard of African Horse sickness! The deep desire that was shown, to learn more about animal husbandry and preventing the losses of their stock was hugely motivating to me! Their response and desire to learn was genuine and absolutely needy! The lack of care is simply born of ignorance! Time to educate! This is the motivating factor and vision of this new group. People who will become more and more familiar to all horse owners as the request for your involvement becomes vital! Ignorance is NOT bliss! The health of our horses and long term industry growth across Southern Africa is at risk! Horses are not just used for recreational purposes or for Racing. To many rural folk, horses and donkeys are their only form of transport! This has nothing to do with wealth, recreation, or racing! Thousands of people are dependent upon these equines for their basic livelihood! When one of their horse’s die of a contagious or infectious disease that they know nothing of, they not only innocently put thousands of other equines at risk, but put themselves at risk too! It is not only malaria that Mosquitoes carry nowadays. There is no help in taking blood samples to finding out what the Equine died of, thus no data to assist Entomologists and Virologists with accurate information for the development of Vaccines. The vision of SOH is to assist in this area too. It plans to raise the money to assist in education and awareness projects from January 2015, and assist with vaccinating and collecting of vital data. Raising money in innovative ways is the responsibility of the marketing team! This is made up of horse lovers and owners but we need everyone on board! None of us know when a “bad” midgey is in our yard, stable or horsebox! Mosquitoes are everywhere, and in the darkness lurks a disease no one

wants to be subject to: Rabies! In order to assist our Vets and Virologists we need to ensure they also get the right information. If a horse dies from one of these dreaded viruses it is absolutely essential that blood tests are done and the results reported. Sometimes it is not possible, for any number of reasons. SOH hopes to be able to assist in this area too! The gathering of accurate data is as important as educating those who are not aware it even exists!

In the very near future SOH will be everywhere, buzzing around you like those Midgies and Mozzies! Exciting and useful apparel will be on sale throughout Southern Africa, so anything you buy with SOH on it, you can be sure your money is going to a cause that could directly or indirectly save your horse in future.Want to be sure the money is going where it should? No problem at all, this side of the organisation is being very carefully handled by top auditors and access will be available to all.

Too many are fatal, too many unreported deaths, too little awareness! For more information contact Di Armour –email – barmour@worldonline.co.za Or Kathy Wiles on FB- Equilink, or Erica Scotton 0828209798

This is the logo to look out for! It is the “lady” who transmits the disease!

DUTCH DELIVER THEIR SECOND TEAM JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE IN THRILLING FINAL AT CAEN

he Netherlands took their second world Jumping championship team title in style at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy. They benefitted from the lead they established in he earlier round to narrowly pip the host nation of France at the end of a nail-biting contest, while the USA took bronze. Germany missed out on a podium placing by just 0.1 of a penalty point when finishing fourth and Sweden snatched the last of the five Olympic qualifying spots on offer when lining up sixth behind Brazil. The team representing the country that will play host in two years’ time is automatically qualified for Rio 2016, but the Brazilians showed that they are likely to be a force to be reckoned with when the world arrives on their doorstep. The day however was all about the Dutch, who previously scooped the world team title at Aachen (GER) in 2006. And two of the riders from that victorious side - Jeroen Dubbeldam and Gerco Schroder - once again played a pivotal role in the history-making result. No walk in the park It was no walk in the park however, as three of the four Dutch team-members faulted . The man who actually clinched the title for them was Jur Vrieling, who produced one of just 14 clear rounds over another of Frederic Cottier’s fantastic courses. Lying ninth and 10th, Colombia and Ukraine disappeared from the reckoning, but the remaining eight teams were locked in combat for both the championship medals and Olympic places. The Dutch didn’t get off to the perfect start when Dubbeldam’s Zenith SFN kicked out the middle element of the triple combination, which saw plenty of action throughout the day.Team-mate, Maikel van der Vleuten, made it all the way to the final oxer with VDL Groep Verdi only to leave that on the floor. The line from the opening vertical to the Land Rover oxer at fence two proved the bogey of the competition as, time after time, riders curved around the final element of the triple combination on the approach to the second fence only to kick out the front pole. In all, 10 of the 57 starters left this one on the floor, which didn’t give them the best start to their tour of the 13-fence track. 106

SPORTING HORSE Issue 20

Triple combination The vertical at three was followed by an oxer at four and another vertical at five before riders swung right-handed to an oxer at six, followed by the Alltech triple combination. This vertical to oxer to vertical challenge jumped really well in the early stages of the competition, with five clears from the first tranche of riders who were battling it out for individual placings. Second to go, Austria’s Stefanie Bistan and Bogegaardens Apollonia produced a copybook run and Morocco’s Abdelkebir Ouaddar and Quickly de Kreisker followed suit, but only nine of the team riders conquered both the course and the clock, and the timeallowed of 80 seconds proved difficult for many to get. The oxer at eight was followed by a vertical at nine and then a long run down to a flimsy vertical over water at 10. Then it was right-handed to a double of verticals, before turning back towards the arena entrance over the Eiffel Tower vertical and the final oxer, which celebrated the emblematic Normande cow. Lead changing regularly It was nip-and-tuck all the way, with the lead changing regularly and no clear confirmation of the medal placings until the closing stages. Lying in silver medal position overnight, America’s McLain Ward (Rothchild), Kent Farrington (Voyeur) and Lucy Davis (Barron) all faulted just once, but anchor rider Beezie Madden saved the day with a spectacular clear from Cortes C that pulled them right back into contention. Germany also only produced only a single clear round. Lying in bronze medal spot, it was looking really good for the defending world champions when Christian Ahlmann led the way with a faultfree run from Codex One, but Marcus Ehning’s Cornado NRW sliced through the penultimate vertical, Daniel Deusser’s Cornet D’Amour clipped the middle element of the triple combination and Ludger Beerbaum’s Chiara fell victim to the oxer at fence two, so they had to add eight faults to their running score line. Meanwhile the fourth-placed French, determined to put on the best possible show in front of their home crowd, battled gamely and clears from Penelope Leprevost (Flora de Mariposa) and Kevin Staut (Reveur de Hurtebise) saw them overtake the Americans

and push the Germans down to fourth when all they had to add was one of the four faults from pathfinder Simon Delestre (Qlassic Bois Margot) and anchorman Patrice Delaveau (Orient Express HDC). For the second day in a row the Brazilians were really impressive when also having to add only four to their tally because both their young star, Marlon Zanotelli (AD Clouwni), and 1998 individual world Jumping champion Rodrigo Pessoa (Status) kept a clean sheet. Rolf-Goran Bengtsson’s clear with Casall ASK meant that all the Swedish team had to add was a total of five faults to claim the final slot for Rio, but it was heart-break for the Irish. They fought valiantly but, lying seventh, remained there when forced to also add five despite a superb clear from Denis Lynch and All Star. The Canadians meanwhile lined up eighth with a final score of 31.00. Intensity The Netherlands’ Jeroen Dubbeldam described the intensity of the afternoon. “The pressure was really on and I think every rider felt it today, we all had little mistakes everywhere and it was good that we were in the lead yesterday because if you are in the lead, and everyone does the same thing, then you stay in the lead!” he said. “I had one fault and one time fault and you know you cannot afford any more mistakes, and Maikel came second and had also a mistake and then it gets exciting and you think maybe it’s getting out of hand, but Jur brought us back into the game!” Like all the Dutch riders, and their proud and popular Chef d’Equipe Rob Ehrens, 2000 Olympic champion, Dubbeldam was thrilled with the result.“Holland has proven that we are really a strong country, it’s now the second time we are world champions. We were second 108

at the Olympic Games (London 2012) and we won Olympic gold once before with the team, so it shows we are a strong country. We have a really, really great team with some top jockeys with some good horses and super owners behind us, so that gives us a fantastic base to work from.” Rob Ehrens commented:“today we had another excellent course, my compliments to the course designer, the teams all stayed really close. When our first rider made one tiny mistake and one time penalty and then our second rider had four faults it wasn’t easy for me, the coach, my heart was going up and down! But when you have good spirit in your team you can achieve anything.” French Chef d’Equipe, Philippe Guerdat, said he was very satisfied with the silver medals. “It was a big day for the sport in France, everyone wants to be at their best in front of the home crowd but it was very difficult. It was a tough day, but we knew it was possible to go up (the leaderboard) and all of my riders were part of taking this second place and I’m very proud of them”. Penelope Leprevost described riding into the arena today as being “like entering a boiling cauldron - I’m not sure I will ever experience anything like it again!” she said. What we came here for “A medal is what we came here for,” said American Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “We believe this is one of the top teams we have ever fielded and we had a great lead-up to coming here, we had great confidence and we gave it our all.” And he has extra reason to be pleased because at the time of going to print, Beezie Madden now heads the individual rankings going into Saturday’s two-round competition from which the top four will qualify for Sunday’s individual final. In the 61-year history of the individual world Jumping championship, an American rider has never won gold.

Madden has Sweden’s Bengtsson in hot pursuit while Denmark’s Soren Pedersen has quietly made it all the way up to third place thanks to another brilliant performance from Tailormade Esperanze de Rebel.

I was injured in the spring he hasn’t done a whole lot and when I did show him in Hickstead and Dublin he looked so fantastic, coming out fresh like that, so we didn’t do anything with him since. I’ve done a lot of work getting him fit at home, riding him several times a day, but whether he’s show-ring fit or not we’ll have to wait and see.”

A single mistake dropped Frenchman Patrice Delaveau from first to fourth, but there is less than a fence between the leading four and only a whisper separating them from Brazil’s Pessoa in fifth, He’ll certainly have to be at the top of his game to stay out in front, Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet in sixth, team silver medallist Leprevost but first there is a rest day following a long night of celebrations for the Dutch, who were presented with their gold medals by Mr in seventh and Germany’s Daniel Deusser in eighth place. Toni Khoury, IOC member for Lebanon and a member of the FEI Individual leader, Madden, said she has always believed in her horse, Olympic Council, in front of the enthusiastic crowd who have been Cortes C. He has championship scope and the right attitude - all widely praised for their fantastic enthusiasm over the last 10 days of the best qualities” she pointed out.
