Summer Spring Winter Fall Showing the expanding and s hrinking city center, depending on the seasons. It shows that many central areas are periodically completely unused.

The permanent vendors should also express that they are there to stay. I also want them to have the possibility to create a friendly and everyday-life connection with the people in the city who are passing by. The expression should therefore talk the language of a normal street with big, wide display possibilities, all year around.

I believe that a food market can bring life to this part again and also comment on the old north-south axes but also highlight the movement of people in the west-east direction.

The short term vendors will renting stalls in the hall, a space that is more flexible. Depending on how many vendors who are occupying the market. Since it can be pretty intense and many vendors at once I believe in a large volume. The stalls will create an inner roof that creates a more intimate scale within the bigger volume.

Markets fill more functions than consumption. They are a meeting point, a spectacle that disrupts everyday life as much as it is part of it. Not a shopping complex but an active participant in local life. The market has something to offer for everyone, be it ecological produce, Iranian herb blends, or a chat with your neighbour.

FOOD MARKET - spring 2013

In the history of Umeå the site between the school and church has had different names and functions: church square, school park and as now “Vänortsparken”, a public park. In the 70’s the old city plan was ”destroyed” by the infrastructure that was built to make the city more adapted for car access. Storgatan got broader and a new bridge was build to connect both sides of the river. It was planned for 60 000 cars using the bridge every day. Today it’s about 15 000, so it is much larger then it has to be. Because of this infrastructure the north south connection in the city plan with the two great buildings, church and school, became weaker and also the connection between the park Vänortsparken, the Kyrkparken and Döbelns Park.

This is an unused place most of the time during the year. People pass it everyday all year around. The big bike path connects the city center of consumption with the center of knowledge – the university and the hospital. The site is also close to the buss center –Vasaplan– where all the bus lines connect. This part is also a grey zone now a day, in my opinion. You have to the left “Öst på stan” as you past Östra Kyrkogatan, and just one block away you will start to feel the center.

How to get to the market The season market will be outdoor. In Umeå there is already existing a seasonal market –”The Farmers Market”. It’s simple and they come with trucks and parasols and tables. I want to create a nice space for them to fill during season. They can fill it with what they want and how they want and that will create a diversity that will give an urban touch to Umeå.
