The permanent vendors should also express that they are there to stay. I also want them to have the possibility to create a friendly and everyday-life connection with the people in the city who are passing by. The expression should therefore talk the language of a normal street with big, wide display possibilities, all year around.

I believe that a food market can bring life to this part again and also comment on the old north-south axes but also highlight the movement of people in the west-east direction.

The short term vendors will renting stalls in the hall, a space that is more flexible. Depending on how many vendors who are occupying the market. Since it can be pretty intense and many vendors at once I believe in a large volume. The stalls will create an inner roof that creates a more intimate scale within the bigger volume.

Markets fill more functions than consumption. They are a meeting point, a spectacle that disrupts everyday life as much as it is part of it. Not a shopping complex but an active participant in local life. The market has something to offer for everyone, be it ecological produce, Iranian herb blends, or a chat with your neighbour.

FOOD MARKET - spring 2013

In the history of Umeå the site between the school and church has had different names and functions: church square, school park and as now “Vänortsparken”, a public park. In the 70’s the old city plan was ”destroyed” by the infrastructure that was built to make the city more adapted for car access. Storgatan got broader and a new bridge was build to connect both sides of the river. It was planned for 60 000 cars using the bridge every day. Today it’s about 15 000, so it is much larger then it has to be. Because of this infrastructure the north south connection in the city plan with the two great buildings, church and school, became weaker and also the connection between the park Vänortsparken, the Kyrkparken and Döbelns Park.

Umeå center

Front/ Back Front side

This is an unused place most of the time during the year. People pass it everyday all year around. The big bike path connects the city center of consumption with the center of knowledge – the university and the hospital. The site is also close to the buss center –Vasaplan– where all the bus lines connect. This part is also a grey zone now a day, in my opinion. You have to the left “Öst på stan” as you past Östra Kyrkogatan, and just one block away you will start to feel the center.

How to get to the market The season market will be outdoor. In Umeå there is already existing a seasonal market –”The Farmers Market”. It’s simple and they come with trucks and parasols and tables. I want to create a nice space for them to fill during season. They can fill it with what they want and how they want and that will create a diversity that will give an urban touch to Umeå.

SMALL CHANGES 1. The park and the greenery is extending and connecting towards Vasaplan to make a nice walk path down to the market and the park. This can also be a great feature for the future hotel that will move in to the old school – Mimerskolan.

2. A parking lot for visitors to the market and the hotel to be. Placed near to the Östra Kyrkogatan for easy access. No one would like to sit outdoor next to the crowded road either, therefore a perfect spot for parking and loading.

3. Some vegetation is cut down to open up the park towards Kungsgatan. Today it is hard to see and appreciate the park because of bushes and trees. 4. Traffic can be heavy on Östra Kyrkogatan and Storgatan therefore this roundabout can be hard for pedestrians to cross. To place traffic light here I believe can make this safer for bicycles and pedestrians. A resulting effect might be that more citizens will use the parks south of Storgatan and then also experiencing the river – Umeå Älv.

TEMPORARY STALL

MATERIAL

Desired functions and properties is a light material in some parts but also solid and strong in other parts of the construction. For example the core has to be able to stand straight when the entire roof is unfolded. The bottom part has to be fixed to the ground or have a weight preventing tilting. The extracted roof has to be of a light material and also being able to be folded and unfolded and having some stiffness in on direction. Since the market is based on natural materials such as wood, glass, metal and concrete it would be nice if the stalls would keep up the same theme.

Hall for temporary activities

Main storing area

The drawing is showing a configuration of 20 units, the minimum asked for in the program. The hall can easily fit more units. The stalls maximum size is 9 square meters, 3x3m, but since the roof is flexible you can take less space if wanted and then place them closer together and in other configurations, for instance in the periphery. Why not mix them with lorries and tables? When another event is scheduled in the hall you can fold the stalls together and they become pillars, and you can pack them in the storing room if wanted.

THE GRID The market structure is based on a grid – see drawing– both in plan and elevation, it is noticed in the glass facades.

Connection Placed in the north-south axe of the old city plan: school, park and church –commenting, gaining and enhancing it. This gallery will also be a passage for the future hotel guests to move towards the park and the river. They will have the possibility to see the market wake up when passing through in early time of the day.

STRUCTURE The framework is based on a 200x50 mm pillars that is used throughout the building. The in between space in the facades is glass, that gives this big building light and transparent look. To stabilizing the framework both in elevation and plan wires are placed diagonally to fix the structure. LARGE SPAN STRUCTURE To make the passage between the school and Kungsgatan/ Vänortsparken to feel like a high gallery without any pillars that interfere with the space a large span structure is placed to hold up the roof.

Democracy All the permanent vendors have the same outward display possibilities except the ones on the corners. They have the same amount of square meters in the unit and are free to fill it and furnish it how they want. Everyone also has the possibility to put some goods outside of their store in the corridor. 1:200

1:100

Public space Since sellers can close their store during closed hours the hall can be partly opened for public use during the whole day. For example the public toilettes can be accessible 24 hours. It’s placed on the west side towards the city center and Vasaplan where all the busses connect.

big hall This double height hall is for temporary events, it could be food market, second hand, flea market, concert, sport events and so one. The use is flexible and should be. The walls can open up during the warm season and the activity can move outside as well.

sun shading Since the building is covered with glass facades and will be exposed for sun light during the whole day it will need some sort of shading. The shading system will be wooden panels within each framework in the facades. The panels are made flexible and can be controlled depending of whether conditions. It can be set in to different angels and distance – see drawing. The appearance when unused will be as in the photo collage.

I see this market as a framework for activities to take place in. Fill it with colorful food, spices, meat, fish, cheese, crafts, second hand or even put a concert inside the big hall or another event by the market, the city, the hotel, a company or a private event.

1:500

1:10

Buffer zone The buffer zone in this building is the glass corridor, which runs around the entire building except the north facade. During summer it can be opened in every other framework on the first plan. During winter the sun will heat this space up and it will create a pleasant in-door climate.

OUT

Acoustics

Heating and ventilation

water and snow

The materials in the market is pretty hard besides the wood in the panels, therefore I believe it would be good to put in some acoustic material in the inner roof especially in the double height space. If more is needed it is always possible to add it near the roof. When crowed the people will also absorb noise but of course also bring sound.

The building will regulate some of the heating by using the shading system and also by opening all or some of the doors that exists around the building. There will also be ventilation openings near the roof in the façade for natural ventilation. In the more solid part there will be a fan-system providing fresh air.

An internal drainage will be installed for rainwater and also for the melting snow. A slight angel on the roofs towards the drainage will make the water flow in right direction.
