ou never know when one day you may need a blood transfusion. Accidents happen so quickly. Or perhaps you may not need blood but your grandmother will, or your newborn baby nephew, or your best friend. A unit of blood can save up to three lives, and it is often vulnerable patients like babies or cancer sufferers who benefit the most. Being scared of the needle is natural, but in overcoming that fear and donating regularly you can enjoy the satisfaction that comes from being a part of the group of South Africans who support the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the vital service they provide. There is always a high demand for blood, and this need spikes periodically – for example over festive weekends when there is a higher incidence of accidents on our roads, or over holidays when regular donors may be away. The more South African who make a commitment to donate 12

“safe” blood, the better. Who can donate? This is the criteria: • You must weigh at least 50kg; • Be between 16 and 65 years of age; • Be in good health; • Lead a sexually safe lifestyle; and • Consider your blood safe for transfusion. The donation process itself really doesn’t take a long time. A questionnaire must be filled out, your iron levels are checked, and then you are hooked up to the needle and blood sack. Once the unit has been given, you are encouraged to relax a little and enjoy some juice and a biscuit to avoid light-headedness, before you can be on your merry way. Donate blood and save a life! They will be at the Girl Guides Hall every third Tuesday of the month until 18 November. Remember that you may only donate every 56 days. Bring a friend! * Information sourced from www.sanbs.org.za
