Advanced nuclear reactor development essentially blocked by Nuclear Regulatory Commission February 27, 2018 The NRC has chased all development of fast reactors and molten salt reactors off shore because their answer in meetings concerning licensing time is at least 25 years. What the government needs to do is allow the designers to build demonstration devices and funds the DOE to provide information to the NRC so the licensing period can be reduced to something reasonable of five years or less from start to operation. The United States built many reactors in 2-3 years in the early days of the industry. It is the licensing time and cost that is holding up new development.
