The audience looked at the photo of the man-planted mono-culture field of yellow canola flowers and condemned it saying it was very bad for the soil and the planet.

Princeton University Emeritus Professor of Physics, William Happer, explains that the beautiful yellow flowers of the canola fields come from a variety of rapeseed developed in Manitoba, Canada many decades ago. The first syllable, "Can", is from Canada.

Canola has less irritating erucic acid than old-fashioned rapeseed oil, and it is a much better marketing name.

Mono culture exists throughout nature. How can it be condemned in modern agriculture practice?

Today, many extreme environmentalists condemn big business agriculture, for mono culture practices. They don’t care about the tremendous need for farm efficiency to feed all of humanity. Self righteous extremists are set in their ideas. Plant small gardens locally for themselves and a few nearby trading partners. Have different plants in every row. The same groupthink and fear has been applied against fossil fuels and nuclear. Their ideas are a) energy conservation – meaning go with less or go without and b) pay for nearly hermetically sealed construction with practically zero heat leakage, triple pane small porthole glass windows, etc. OK if you want and can afford it.

About 91% of the world’s population has only 15% of all the world’s wealth. In other words, 9% of humanity controls 85% of the world’s wealth. Things haven’t changed much in 3,000 years. The less well off people want a better life that fossil fuels and nuclear energy can provide. They don’t want extreme environmentalists at the Sierra Club, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and people sounding false alarms about catastrophic man-made global warming telling them what they can and cannot do or have. The edicts by extremists and alarmists should be “verboten” (forbidden).

If pragmatic environmentalists can point out errors in thinking about fossil fuels and nuclear, like the errors in thinking that man-planted mono culture crops are bad versus naturally growing mono culture fields of flowers, fruits, trees, and desert plants are good, we might be able to break the logjam of group fear thinking about essential global energy sources.

Canola flowers, fields of grain, corn, sunflowers around the world are beautiful and beneficial, not to be condemned. Same can be said of fossil fuels and nuclear energy.

Conclusions Most of humanity wants to go forward with continued advances in agriculture, energy, water supply and treatment, improvement in economy, government, education, working for peace, healthy living and health care.

A few self appointed individuals and organizations claim that the world needs to be saved by forcing humans to revert back to living conditions two hundred or more years ago. Leave fossil fuels and nuclear energy fuel stock in the ground. Democracies have allowed these people and organizations to have put in place an amazing amount of destructive policies causing societies to stop making progress and even regress.

How will the world move forward?
