Where do the materials in plants come from? Mostly from carbon dioxide in the air and water. John Shanahan October 7, 2018 The typical dry mass composition by percent in plants is:          

Hydrogen - 6 Carbon - 45 Oxygen - 45 Nitrogen - 1.5 Potassium - 1.0 Calcium - 0.5 Magnesium - 0.2 Phosphorous - 0.2 Sulfur - 0.1 Trace elements: Chlorine, Iron, Boron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Molybdenum

The carbon is sourced from CO2 in the air. The oxygen in sugars also comes from CO2. All life in the oceans and on land comes from plants or other animals and has similar amounts of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen from carbon dioxide in the air and water.
