Promoting Thorium as a Nuclear Fuel I recently sat in on a discussion concerning the DOE's Strategy to Restore American Nuclear Leadership. The main takeaways from the meeting were to promote and expand US based uranium mining and retain focus on small modular light water reactor development. What the report omits is any reference to developing a Thorium-based fuel cycle to augment (and hopefully replace) our current uranium fueled fleet. Thorium offers many advantages (no need for enrichment, can be sourced from existing mining byproducts, safety and health advantages) but doesn't have the clout of the uranium mining industry. If the DOE is serious about becoming a global leader in nuclear technology, they should be looking at Thorium and next-generation reactors to solve many of the problems we face locally, nationally and globally.
