THE ESCALATION OF THE WAR ON CO2 PART 2 Thorpe Watson April 30, 2021 April 30, 2021, is Arbor Day; a day when we are encouraged to "plant a tree". It would be appropriate to adopt a second slogan, "feed a tree". Feeding-a-tree can be accomplished by implementing a greenhouse operating procedure that uses our carbon emissions ("carbon dioxide", "CO2") to enrich the atmosphere. John Kerry, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, admitted that "the US reducing its emissions to zero wouldn’t make much of a difference in the global climate change fight." - Ebony Bowden, NY Post, January 27, 2021. Unwittingly, Secretary Kerry and President Joe Biden are now leading a campaign to "starve-a-tree" by supporting the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere beyond net zero. This starve-a-tree campaign is based on the mistaken belief that CO2 provides us with a global, temperature-control knob. Astonishingly, the alarmists' own climate models overwhelmingly debunk the "climate-emergency" fear mongering. The models show that the temperature will increase 1.5C to 4.5C for a doubling of atmospheric CO2, most likely 1.5C to 2.0C. Using the most optimistic estimate for the planet's reserves of hydrocarbon fuels, basic phase-equilibrium principles reveal that man-made emissions will only increase the CO2 level by about 25% over 1,000 years; that is, about 0.1 ppm per year. It therefore follows that the alarmists' own climate models reveal a maximum temperature increase of 1.125C (25% of 4.5C) over 1,000 years; that is, 0.001125C per year. Even this insignificant, computer-generated temperature increase is a gross exaggeration. Clearly, a "climate emergency" exists only in the "reimagined world" of leftist politics and not in the real world of scientific principles.
