This Newsletter is for everyone who wants to understand that plentiful, reliable energy from fossil fuels and nuclear power, and their by-products and related technologies are essential for a prosperous, peaceful modern world - not wind and solar. You will learn about long-term efforts to destroy energy sources essential for this wonderful world. The newsletter is for students, parents, working people, retirees, and leaders in business and government.
PEOPLE Look around. Marvels everywhere: the community where you live, your family, friends, your part of the world, nature, insects, birds, animals, plants, trees, marine life! John Shanahan, Editor of this newsletter, recently attended a dinner with three people in their eighties, and one in his sixties. Two women, two men. Two originally from Russia, one originally from Ukraine, one originally from America. We talked about times of peace. We talked about what is 1
needed for us to become space travelers. The spacecraft must go faster. The Russian engineer has a proposal to NASA on how to do this. At the same time, Putin’s Army was raining down tens of thousands of missiles and artillery shells daily on apartment buildings, factories, schools, hospitals in Ukraine. Criminal Blitzkrieg is happening again in Europe. Some Europeans are doing their best not to get too involved. Hoping Putin will stop his madness before it directly involves other Europeans. Many wealthy and powerful people are observing the war from the comfort of clubs, government offices, and home mansions. Billions of low income and poor people are feeling the pain of loss of jobs, serious inflation, lack of safe drinking water, and terrible government leadership. ENERGY Canadian author on science, technology, environment, and people, Vaclav Smil, says that energy is the only real currency. With it we can do work. Paper and digital currencies aren’t worth much if people lose faith in the governments and economies backing the currencies. Money has become worthless many times in the last 3,000 years. With a real currency of reliable, affordable energy from fossil fuels and nuclear power, we can build cities, nations, and have an easier life. Energy never becomes worthless. Solid, liquid, and gaseous hydrocarbon fuels will always be important. Today, we use natural hydrocarbons - fossil fuels. Tomorrow, we will manufacture synthetic hydrocarbon fuels using nuclear energy. South Africa is a big success story for nuclear power and producing radioisotopes for nuclear medicine. The world would do well to follow South Africa’s example. France showed great leadership in the 1970s-80s in standardizing and optimizing their nuclear power program. ENVIRONMENT Life on Earth is very unique with a life supporting atmosphere, circulation of weather, distribution of pure water as rain and snow, oceans, continents, plants, animals, birds, marine life, and many other invisible and small life forms that have tremendous mass and biological importance. 3
Environment and wildlife habitat must be protected. Stewardship of the environment must support human life. Plentiful energy from hydrocarbon fuels (natural now and synthetic in the future) and nuclear power will support modern civilization for hundreds of thousands of years into the future. Hydrocarbon fuels are the absolute basis of most activities. Certain alarmists are against the use of fossil fuels and nuclear power. If they are allowed to succeed, life for billions of people will regress back to very primitive standards using muscle power from individuals, slaves, and animals. Modern health care will stop. Modern conveniences of all types will stop. Modern transportation will stop. False alarmists and power vultures must be stopped at the ballot box and by all means necessary. Mob seizure of the good life created by fossil fuels and nuclear power is not to be humanity’s destiny. RADIATION Anti-nuclear power alarmists have worked since the 1950s to mislead the public about low-dose radiation. With cooperation of regulatory agencies and professional organizations, the alarmists have succeeded in wrongfully making nuclear power artificially expensive and very complex to license.
