Issue 2020 – 8 Hello students, parents, professionals in 122 countries. This newsletter and its website, allaboutenergy.net are dedicated to understanding the importance of energy, energy by-products and energy related sciences for the modern world. We present articles on different sides of all general topics so you can decide. We let you know what we think. In this issue, we focus on outstanding individuals from Iraq, Mexico, and Sierra Leone. Their stories are much more inspiring that much of the negative news that dominates the press. These people are interested in reliable energy, energy by-products and related sciences for a better world.

Babylon is located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in the Fertile Crescent. This region had the first known library in the 7th century B.C. It had irrigation and farming from 6000 B.C. Between 626 and 539 B.C. Babylon was one of the most beautiful cities in the world with grand avenues and entrance gates. Full-scale reproductions of the Ishtar Gate and entrance avenue can be seen in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.

Mesopotamia had an effective Code of Law dating back to about 1750 B.C. We have the Constitution, its amendments, the laws of Congress, states, cities, and regulations of many departments of government that have the force of laws. Absolutely incomprehensible, impossible to know it all and always changing. The country that first developed commercial nuclear power on a large scale, the United States, has neglected the future of nuclear power by allowing plants to close with no replacements. Instead of solving problems holding nuclear power back, many organizations and individual leaders spend decades claiming that nuclear power can solve the “problem” of catastrophic man-made global warming from use of fossil fuels. It is highly likely that there is no “catastrophic man-made global warming crisis.” These nuclear advocates and experts will be exposed for scientific incompetence and preposterous claims that the whole world can be converted to nuclear power in 50 to 100 years. Nuclear power needs sound government, solid economies, good schools and universities, trained technicians and managers, used fuel reprocessing programs, and waste disposal programs. A lot of the world is a long way from having this. The whole world on nuclear power in 50 to 100 years? Hardly! It will be good if a century from now those countries that have had nuclear power build replacement nuclear power plants and solve the problems that are holding nuclear back. Those problems are wrong guidelines for low-dose radiation safety, false fear of low-dose radiation, reprocessing programs for used nuclear fuel, storage of nuclear waste, qualified and objective nuclear regulators, openness to new nuclear power technologies, not minutia demanding, single-nuclear-power-technology bureaucrats. North America has been in energy policy chaos since the 1970s caused by extreme anti-fossil fuels and anti-nuclear power organizations and their partners in non-profit organizations and government, (John Holdren, Thomas Cochran, Frank von Hippel – Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, etc.). Many American universities and state and city governments go along with the anti-fossil fuels – catastrophic man-made global warming – wind and solar energy demands. It is well known where the quality and cost of a lot of American education has gone. 3

Europe is experiencing similar anti fossil fuel and anti-nuclear power campaigns. Green parties in Germany demand 100% wind and solar power. Germany will get as close to 100% wind and solar power as any country – with all the roller coaster ups and downs of the electric grid that go with it. France built the finest large nuclear power program in the world but is now struggling against an increase of anti-nuclear power pressure from indoctrinated citizens and go-along politicians. Such incompetence as the alarmists today have who preach “fear” of the modern world was probably not so prevalent in ancient Mesopotamian, Greek, Egyptian, Jewish, Roman, Indian, Chinese, Aztec, Inca, Mayan, or Eskimo civilizations. We are very grateful to Dr. Sattar for his participation and support. MEXICO: Florencia de los Angeles Renteria del Toro BSc, Chemical Engineering, Mexico MSc, Nuclear Power Plant Engineering, South Korea PhD candidate in Nuclear Science and Technology, Harbin Engineering University China Florencia is an amazing citizen of Mexico. Three engineering degrees earned in Spanish, Korean and Chinese. On top of that, she is fluent in English. Very few students do all that. Many in the United States don’t know all the good in Latin America: Spanish and Portuguese languages, music, literature, art, history, culture, science, medicine and engineering. A lot of Mexico is practically invisible to Americans and American politicians except poverty, crime, illegal immigrants and some places to vacation or retire in American enclaves. American people should look at the talent and skills of the Latin American people and cooperate to develop technology for the benefit of everyone. It is known that young talents from the Latin American countries generate 4

creative and innovative solutions in different engineering fields and most of them are skillful in several fields. Florencia de los Angeles Renteria del Toro is making a wonderful career and trying to create more opportunities for future generations in the nuclear industry. Doing it her incredible way. We are so thankful she reached out to work with us to educate the world about nuclear energy and science.

SIERRA LEONE, AFRICA: Issa Fowai BSc and MSc, Civil Engineering, Harbin Engineering University, China PhD candidate, Civil Engineering, University of Ottawa, Canada

Sierra Leone is a country with a profoundly sad history of the slave trade and freed slaves returning to try to make a good life. The civil war (1991 – 2002) turned Sierra Leone, once meant to be a shining light of West Africa with abundant natural resources that could engineer economic and political prosperity, into a living hell. China gave Issa Fowai a chance of a lifetime to have an engineering education. Thank you, China! He took it, learned Chinese, studied hard, taught Chinese students mathematics in Chinese, kept a happy and positive outlook, made lots of friends. Now he is a PhD candidate in Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa. Thank you, Canada! Follow Issa on his website: https://www.ifowai.com/ Harbin Engineering University, China. International Students’ Union. Issa Fowai bottom right. Student President 2015.

Issa excelled for Harbin Engineering University in soccer and track.

This is one of the best stories out of Africa. How many students in America work this hard? He is preparing to make tremendous contributions for a better world. Many problems individuals, cities, and federal, state and local governments in the United States have would have been solved long ago, if we did like China, Canada and Issa Fowai have done?

The website: allaboutenergy.net is very thankful to have Professor Sattar, Florencia Renteria del Toro and Issa Fowai helping with our mission for global education about energy and energy by-products including nuclear medicine. 7

We are thankful to Dr. Mary McCormick (radiation science, education) for managing our connections with outstanding young professionals. John Shanahan Civil Engineer, Editor, website allaboutenergy.net Denver, Colorado, USA
