NUCLEAR ENERGY - delivering the future Conference Objectives: • Develop a positive and proactive approach to the nuclear power planning and implementation process in South Africa. • Show that South Africa, and other African countries, have the skills, technology and competitive ability to implement nuclear power options. • Provide a forum for people to access the entire spectrum of expertise from research and development, to the construction and fabrication of nuclear power assemblies and installations. • Address public interest issues such as safety, legislation, and the handling of nuclear waste, amongst others. • Explore collaborative relationships with the international community, who will be attending the conference. • Explain why much of Africa needs to develop nuclear energy capability, and why it needs to start now, not later. Innovative new systems exist.

The 2016 Nuclear Africa Conference is designed to bring significant players together so that the exciting South African nuclear power expansion plans can be moulded towards the conference theme of: The Components Come Together. As in past events a forceful collection of speakers and players will be assembled. Speakers: Again in 2016 the Nuclear Africa conference speakers are being selected in collaboration with Necsa, our organising partner. The CEO of Necsa, Phumzile Tshelane, will be a speaker in 2016. At our 2015 conference, speakers included: Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the IAEA; Jean-Jacques Gautrot, President of the World Nuclear Association (WNA); Bryan Erler, Vice President of ASME in New York; plus international nuclear vendors and prominent South African organisations such as the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR), and major local construction and fabrication companies. President Zuma and the Minister of Energy spoke at a special conference dinner. (See www.nuclearafrica.co.za). We bring power and influence together.

Programme Director of Nuclear Africa 2016 is Dr Kelvin Kemm CEO: Nuclear Africa (PTY) LTD

Another aspect covered by the conference is the demystification of nuclear power. Particular attention has been paid to ensuring that material covered is easily presentable to the general public and to the media. Nuclear power has always suffered from public misunderstanding. Nuclear science is complex, so it is not surprising that the public gets confused. It is therefore important, for general public participation, that the public is exposed to an accurate portrayal of what is going on with nuclear power development in South Africa. The Nuclear Africa Conference is aimed at providing the platform required to encourage the partnerships needed to rapidly advance the nuclear power programme in South Africa.

REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA

Considerable progress has been made in South Africa towards the initiation of the 9600MW Nuclear Build Programme. Domestically in South Africa a spectrum of companies must become involved in the construction and fabrication of nuclear assemblies and components. These companies need to be able to view a future with enough production volume, to make it worth their while to invest in the production infrastructure required, to produce goods to the required nuclear standards. Thus a broad spectrum of cooperation is required.
