Johnathan Subendran Vol. 2016

1

_My name is Johnathan Subendran. I am currently a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The following is a collection of my creative works. My work and process are primarily influenced by the world around me. It inspires me to propose and think of alternative ways that look to improve upon daily life of an individual and the human race. I believe architecture should go beyond the pretty facades and glamorous spaces, it should focus on bettering the lives of people and be in direct dialog with current political, social and economic issues. _I am passionate, driven and creative. I believe in meaningful work and that strong ideas derive from a great deal of research and collaboration with others. _I am experienced in various aspects of design such as 3D Modeling, Visualization, Hand Modeling, Graphic Design, Concept and Schematic Development, 2D Drawing and Analysis. _I admire the power of design and the potential it has to change the world in any way possible. I look to someday impact the world with my ideas, and one day inspire others as well.

01 social housing project SUBJECT: Fall 2016 SUPERVISOR : Adrian Blackwell TYPE: Affordable Housing Affordable housing that looks to build a relationship with individuals who suffer financially, socially and emotionally by bridging their gap to opportunity. It is an attempt to provide the means to live - to provide an individual with basic necessities that should be available to humans, sadly it is not. If a person doesn’t have means to live with bare minimum to survive, the will not have the means to pursue success and therefore exploit any opportunity given to them. This project seeks to revitalize people’s lives to provide them the means to positively improve upon their lives, perhaps to get them back on their feet and experience life for all its worth This space focuses on the social + economical stability of the city of Cambridge and its inhabitants.

CONCEPT The design looks to address three prominent issues surrounding the urban context of Galt. The scheme will pursue a method to revitalize the liveliness of this area that is also present within the downtown core. A combination of public and market spaces conditions on the ground plane will be used and also to engage the community to help bridge the lower income class towards opportunists that will positively influence the quality of everyday lives.

02 Hackers LAB SUBJECT: Winter 2015 SUPERVISOR : Donald McKay TYPE: Urban-Micro Institution This is a space designed for the hacker. The design is driven by the constant flux in the way we use knowledge and how we tailor it for our needs. The average hacker does not need books to configure and create, they require tools and machines and mechanism. The library of tools and modules provides an opportunity for hackers to modify systems and gadgets that reveal more of an in-depth understanding of how things work. For these operations to work, collaboration is an essential factor which will increase the brewing of ideas, resulting in high quality product.

CONCEPT: SPATIAL FRAME THAT ENCOMPASSES PERFORMANCE. PERFORMANCE THROUGH PRESENTATION MEDIA, SPORTS AND SOCIAL INTERACTION. A ‘sculpture’ that spans seamlessly with no end and no start, used as a multifunctional space that could be transformed and occupied to the user’s need.

01 PRECEDENTS: Beijing National Stadium

03 The national stadium of Beijing, china also known as the bird’s nest was designed for the 2008 summer Olympics and paralytics. The stadium has brought peoples from around the globe to enjoy the world’s best talent, together in one space. It could be considered as a multi-purpose space; a stage for a variety of sports and performance. The idea of bringing a large mass together within a flexible space was a source of inspiration to the theme ‘recycle’. The outer steel frame was to be recycled as well as the existing metaphors and values the design carried. It became essential that the two should stand strong coherently. The long spans of steel could be easily shaped using various tools such as ‘v’ dies. The existing concepts are translated into an architecture that is entirely different serving a similar purpose. 01 02 03 04 05

04 Post war Syria Housing SUBJECT: Winter 2016 COLLABORATORS: Bianca Weeko Martin, Joshua MacDonald TYPE: Housing Our post-war housing solution for Syria focuses on creating a sense of security through unity. The base unit contains two separate dwellings per floor, and takes on an L-shaped form that allows it to be stacked and oriented in various arrangements to accommodate for the surrounding environment or to control the formation of interior courtyards, exterior marketplaces, and circulation through and around the building. The ground plane takes the Middle Eastern architectural typology of the arch and uses it to invite citizens into the building and facilitate circulation into the units and through interior courtyards. The arch then becomes a symbol of unity and gathering, as well as a testament to the Syrian vernacular, and a golden age to aspire towards once again. Cooler micro climates are created in the courtyard configurations through the use of vegetation and cooling water features. In order to moderate interior temperatures, wind catchers are used to bring in cool air. These sustainable design innovations, in addition to thick concrete masonry walls and sparingly placed windows, ensure occupants are comfortable in the hot-arid climate of Syria. The wall construction allows for the incorporation of salvaged material from ruins. Additionally, the base unit is comprised of 4m by 4m modules that offer a degree of flexibility for a variety of programs and family sizes.

FORM AND FUNCTION + DRAWINGS The L-Shaped form allows for flexibility through the arrangement of the module form. It is able to be stacked and oriented in various forms to accommodate for the surrounding environment or to control the formation of interior courtyards, market place, and circulation through and around the building. The formation is inspired by the traditional Syrian housing typologies that open to interior courtyards and flexible spaces.
