welcome to
townsville
Townsville is a hotspot for holidaymakers visiting North Queensland. Whether you want to relax and unwind on a beach, indulge in some shopping or book a diving adventure, you won’t be short on things to see and do. Townsville was initially established because the first settlers in the region required a seaport north of the Burdekin River, which was vulnerable to flooding. In 1864, John Melton Black dispatched a search party to find a suitable location, and Cleveland Bay was subsequently discovered. Backed financially by a Sydney merchant, Robert Towns, a settlement was laid down and, in his honour, was named Townsville. In 1892, a new harbour was established to allow ships to anchor in protected waters further out and so, with the expansion of the sugar industry, the port was utilised more and more. Nonetheless, the commencement of World War I, along with the ailing goldfields, adversely affected Townsville. The German occupation in Papua New Guinea saw ships re-routed and a railway constructed in 1924 connected Queensland regional and coastal areas. In 1942, during World War II, Townsville was fortified with a military presence but was still targeted by the Japanese and bombed. The damage was minimal and, at the close of the war, Townsville went on to thrive and become what it is today.

‘Maggie’, as locals affectionately now call the island, is a residential island with a true village atmosphere.
