Young Young is situated in the south west region of southern New South Wales and forms part of the Hilltops Region. The architecture is reminiscent of the early gold mining period so the township exudes heritage. The Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Gardens is a site of historical significance where you can relax and soak up the history of Young. See the waterfall fashioned from natural stone by a local stonemason, enjoy the abundance of birdlife, inspect the gifts from the Chinese community in Sydney and overseas, and appreciate the dense plantings of trees and shrubs along the walkways. You can enter the garden through the gateway - a donation from Taronga Park Zoo. The garden looks spectacular all year round and picnic facilities, barbecues and toilets are all available onsite.
Burrangong Creek and the wonderful parklands which surround it are at the heart of the township of Young. This was the original area where gold was discovered so one can wander along the historic walk absorbing the heritage points along the way. The region offers plenty more to see and do. For more information, drop into the Young Visitor Information Centre at Anderson Park. Discover #Hilltops Region.

Things to See and Do atch the sun rise or set W from the stunning HMAS Sydney II Memorial. NATIONAL CHERRY FESTIVAL During the first weekend in December the whole region comes alive with the excitement of the National Cherry Festival held over three days. Events include the Cherry King and Queen crowning, a street parade, a farmers market, a cherry pie eating competition, a cherry pip spitting competition, and more. If you're keen to taste some locally-made cherry wine, drop into Wombat Cellars.
LAMBING FLAT CHINESE FESTIVAL The Lambing Flat Chinese Festival celebrates the rich heritage of Young and the cultural impact the Chinese had on the region as a result of the gold rush in 1861. The festival includes Chinese gastronomical delights, Chinese Lion Dancing, martial arts and market stalls. The festival occurs annually in March. For more information, visit www.visithilltopsregion.com.au.
SCENIC DRIVE Explore the natural surrounds and heritage of the Young region via this 75km scenic loop. Enjoy the drive from Young to Monteagle, Touts Lookout, Iandra, Henry Lawson Way and back to Young again.
YOUNG HERITAGE WALKS Young is steeped in history and one of the best ways to embrace the past and interact with some of the most noteworthy landmarks is by taking a self directed heritage town walk. There are two heritage walks which both start from the Young Visitor Information Centre at the former Railway Station on Anderson Park. Here you can pick up a brochure for your selfdirected tour. There is plenty to learn about the town from the days on the Lambing Flat goldfields through to Young’s current status as a thriving town in a rich rural setting. Marvel at some of the historic buildings like the old court house located alongside Carrington Park, consider the workmanship of the Young Visitor Information Centre and former railway station. Young’s record as the first town in NSW to have electric lights in both streets and private homes is just one fact that will be revealed.
YOUNG ANNUAL SHOW If you’re in Young during September, be sure to catch the Young Annual Show. Featuring live entertainment, stalls, cooking demonstrations, competitions, agriculture, and more, the show promises to be fun for visitors of all ages.
LOCAL MARKETS
The Lambing Flat Chinese Tribute Gardens are the perfect place to relax and unwind in tranquil surrounds. Enjoy the picnic and barbecue facilities available to visitors.
The Hilltops Region has a number of monthly markets where visitors can get their fix of fresh produce and handicrafts. Try the Young and Region Farmers Market which occurs on the first, third and fifth Saturday of the month. There’s also the Boorowa Makers and Growers Community Markets which occur every fourth Saturday of the month. Enjoy!
LAMBING FLAT FOLK MUSEUM
NURSERIES AND ART
LAMBING FLAT CHINESE TRIBUTE GARDENS
The Lambing Flat Folk Museum, located at 2 Campbell Street in Young, offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the history of the region which harks all the way back to the gold rush period. The museum is open daily between 10am and 4pm, except for Good Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Young has some wonderful nurseries that feature locally grown trees and shrubs. Check out Golden Glance Nursery which promises a unique experience for both young and old. There are many artisans within the district who sell their wares through a number of local outlets.
Boorowa Boorowa is located just seventy minutes north-west of Canberra, with a colourful Irish heritage, a long tradition of pastoral activity, wide open landscapes on the Boorowa River and pure country charm. Irish cousins Roger Corcoran and Ned Ryan, prominent in the settlement and growth of the town, were rebels who had been transported to the colony of NSW each gained a “ticket-ofleave” the first step to citizenship, in 1821. The first Europeans to settle in the district, they invited friends and family to make a new life in the region. Boorowa’s proud Irish heritage comes into view at the annual Irish Woolfest. Boorowa is home to fine merino wool; its renowned studs form the core of the region’s pastoral economy. In celebration of this and its Irish heritage, flocks of sheep fill Boorowa’s main street in the spectacular Running of the Sheep. The day culminates with the ecumenical Blessing of the Fleece. A sheep is shorn, and its fleece is thrown on stage as a thanksgiving for the fine wool of the district. Complete with Irish music, dancers, and a Growers’ Market, the Irish Woolfest is the highlight of Boorowa’s year.

Along the Lachlan Valley Way from the Hume Highway, Boorowa is a delight for travellers, offering a vibrant and well-preserved township brimming with cultural attractions. The fine classical Boorowa Courthouse holds a cafe and information centre. Rail enthusiasts can visit the heritage listed Boorowa Underbridge, with its rare timber deck Howe Truss. The Historical Museum occupies the last pisé building in Boorowa and the Glenara Gallery along the main road is in a fine Early Victorian gentleman’s residence. The octagonal War Memorial, a terra cotta-roofed English Georgian building, dominates the vista along the main street near the bridge across the Boorowa River. Boorowa has antique shops and several popular country pubs. You’ll find Devonshire teas and homemade scones served with fresh cream and local berry jams.
Jugiong On the banks of the Murrumbidgee River just off the Hume Highway, the picturesque village of Jugiong is an ideal entry point and introduction to the Hilltops Region. 90 minutes from Canberra, 20 minutes from Gundagai, with charming local businesses along the main street, Jugiong is a great place to stop and refresh for your journey. The Long Track Pantry, in the beautifully restored Jugiong General Store, is a thriving produce store and café loved by locals and travellers alike. Serving home-style breakfast and lunch from Wednesday to Monday, the warm and welcoming eatery is the embodiment of Hilltops dining. Enjoy a delicious range of sandwiches and salads, smooth coffee and a tantalising display of locally produced jams, chutneys, oils and sauces. Visit the newly renovated Sir George. The establishment combines a modern, elegant design, high end dining, (with

their own bakery) complemented by professional friendly service. The Jugiong Wine Cellar, the third feather in the village’s culinary hat, showcases the finest wines from the surrounding wine regions of Hilltops, Tumbarumba, Canberra and Gundagai. Initially designed to present wine produced from the 190 hectares of vines planted nearby, the cellar door quickly expanded to offer travellers a taste of the best wines produced throughout southern New South Wales. Metres from the main street you'll find further shopping delights - including an art studio, florist and wood turning business.
HardenMurrumburrah Located just 30 minutes from Young and 90 minutes from Canberra on the Burley Griffin way are the twin towns of Harden and Murrumburrah. Here you can explore a rich history spanning the gold rush era, visits from bushrangers and the first Australian Light Horse, complemented by oldworld charm and warm country hospitality. Murrumburrah was founded on Murimboola Creek in the 1840s. In 1877 a major station on the Sydney-Melbourne railway line was established a mile up the hill. Murrumburrah remained the township, while the station became known as Harden. In 1885 a branch line servicing Young and beyond was opened. Workers employed in the railway workshops built to service the trains expanded the Harden population. Distinctive church spires and towers give a dramatic silhouette to the twin towns. Because the two towns developed at different times they offer distinctive architectural styles. Murrumburrah has two former bank buildings in the Arts & Crafts style, the earlier buildings in the Italianate style, and the red brick courthouse and museum are in the Federation Style. The Light Horse Memorial in Albury Street honours the district’s contribution to Australian history. A Heritage Footbridge leads to St Mary’s Church and a view of the town, certainly worth the climb. Harden Murrumburrah offers a range of cafes, pub meals and accommodation.

Harden’s vibrant town centre, north of the Highway around Neill Street, is the commercial precinct of the twin towns. The newly landscaped main street has dramatic groups of mature date palms, and shade trees framing attractive Federation era and Federation style shops, hotels, banks and a Mechanics’ Institute. The Railway Station, still in use but not manned, is a reminder of the scale of passenger and goods traffic that built the town.

Food & Dining Out Enjoy the region’s delicious fresh produce. Pick your own cherries or drop into one of the great eateries in town. The climate and soil in the Hilltops Region offer the perfect conditions for growing fruit. For this reason, you’ll find a number of orchards and wineries in and around the township of Young. The region also produces Hilltops Honey, Yandilla Mustards and Pitstone olives. Be sure to pick your own cherries or stop at one of the roadside stalls for a tasty keepsake. Local restaurants, cafes and coffee shops offer delicious fare serving up fresh local produce, wines and brews. For more information on dining out, visit www.visithilltopsregion.com.au/food-wine.
