n its heyday Echuca was a bustling, pioneering outpost. Paddlesteamers ferried people and goods from southern NSW to Echuca - the closest point to Melbourne on the Murray. Echuca flourished. Pubs, breweries and brothels boomed as the raucous township revelled in its success. Legend has it that it wasn’t uncommon for horse races to stir up the dust down High Street where boutiques boasted the finest European fashion and finery. So what’s changed? Many of the original buildings have been lovingly restored and these days house fabulous restaurants, museums and galleries. The historic wharf - once Australia’s largest inland port at 1.2km long - is home to the world’s largest collection of paddlesteamers. The clip clop of horse drawn carriages, the chuff of steam engines and whirring timber mills bring the wharf to life with the sounds and aromas of yesteryear. Echuca’s rich heritage marries with all the amenities you’d expect of a holiday destination - fantastic sporting facilities, restaurants and cafes, great shopping and of course winding its way timelessly through it all there’s the magnificent Murray River.

The Orleans Restaurant Part of Quality Inn Port of Echuca

Arguably the best food in town.

O

It’s not on the main drag. It’s at the back, away from the street, with ample off street parking. It’s quiet, tranquil, and with the soothing sounds of moving water from nearby our el fresco experience, a place where you can forget the world and remember the company. People have told us our food quality puts us among the top three in town.

In our all female kitchen, Head Chef Sandy creates each season, a menu mixing traditional with culinary adventure, introducing all manner of fruits as part of a main serving. That’s what’s good about Australia - all year round we have a magnificent supply of the standard and exotic.

Of course there’s a well stocked bar. with a top range of beers, the skills for a cocktail, many local wines as well as those selected from some of Australia's best wine growing regions, there’s something for every taste. Check our recommendations that we have carefully matched to the food. You know, some think we are just for motel guests, some think we’re for the rich, or a special occasion. We say we’re here for everybody for any of life’s joys, six days a week.

And mention this ad - we’d love to give you a free coffee and chocolates with any of our desserts.

orseshoe Lagoon reserve, near the Echuca-Moama bridge is a 16 hectare tract of natural bushland perfect for meandering along the walking trails and elevated walkway through stands of magnificent redgums and enjoying delightful views of the Murray River. Take in the history of the old Moama Wharf, the recently restored Moama slipway or the old port area or simply savour the peace and tranquillity of the lagoon - home to plenty of native birdlife. Only 30 minutes drive away is Barmah, gateway to the majestic Barmah forest. 25,000 of its 30,000 hectares contain the world’s largest stands of River Redgum - some of these giants are 40 metres tall and more than 500 years old. The world heritage listed Barmah Wetlands are a must see and you can explore them aboard the Kingfisher Wetland Cruiser. Cruises are run in conjunction with Natural Resources and Environment and during ‘the wet season’ visitors can see some of more than 200 species of waterbirds including some using it as a staging camp during their trans-oceanic migrations. The forest has a deep significance to Aboriginal people and the Dharnya Cultural Centre at Barmah helps explain the area’s link to the Yorta Yorta tribe. Mathoura is also about 30 minutes from Echuca-Moama. From there head south east to Picnic Point where you will enter the 53,000 hectare Mathoura Forests and Moira Lakes. The Moira Forests walkway is a magnificent walk through some spectacular scenery - a great way to quietly take in some of the area’s native birdlife in an unspoilt habitat. Breathe in the fragrance of the forest and keep your eyes peeled for all sorts of creatures scurrying and fluttering about. Further north you will find Deniliquin. The Island Sanctuary is a popular picnic spot and the wildlife reserve is the ideal spot to stop for lunch. It is also the beginning of a riverside walk which follows the Edward River around the McLean Beach - a lovely spot for a swim in the hot weather.

elax and totally unwind as you cruise the mighty Murray River from Riverboat Dock. Riverboat Dock is in the heart of the historic Port area and is home to most of our fleet which, by the way, is the largest of its type in the world.  Choose between hourly cruises, which run every day, aboard authentic paddlewheelers or enjoy a superb lunch or dinner for a more leisurely trip. Put your feet up and savour the sights, sounds and that fresh river-redgum smell as you drift, and don’t be surprised if you spy a platypus splashing about by the river’s edge. Once you’ve got a taste for this languorous river life you might want to captain your own boat. Other facilities at Riverboat Dock include easy vehicle access and parking even for coaches, toilets, picturesque shaded picnic areas and a great safety-fenced children’s playground just up the river bank at Hopwood Gardens. Some vessels have wheelchair access. The spellbinding beauty of the river at dusk will make you wonder why you ever holidayed anywhere else.

Chanter Street, Moama. Ph. 5480 0334, Fax: 5480 0335 he Perricoota Wine District

TEchuca-Moama is on the Murray River 2 1/2

hours from Melbourne. Perricoota is part of the Echuca-Moama tourist district and most cellar doors are within ten minutes drive of the Visitor Information Centre. Perricoota Grape Growing Region has developed over the last six years and now has 400 hectares in vines from thirty vineyards with the growth continuing. There are already three cellar doors operating in the area, each with its own speciality. One has a state of the art winery, one a restaurant and gallery and the other a motor museum. More cellar doors are planned. Perricoota is a new wine region - everything is new, incorporating modern day characteristics, methods and procedures. Perricoota is developing as a region in which premium quality wines are produced. It utilises the benefits of the soils, climate and water of the area in growing grapes of the highest quality. Our quality has already been demonstrated with medals being won at the Royal Melbourne Show, the Royal Hobart Show, the Australian Inland Wine Show, the Winemakers Wine Show and several other smaller wine shows.

The wine area of Perricoota is in NSW and has as its southern boundary the Murray River from Perricoota Station in the West to the western side of Barmah Forest in the East, and North about 16 kilometres to Green Gully. It includes Moama, Womboota, Cobb Highway and Moira Irrigation schemes. The name “Perricoota” is registered as a “Geographical Indication” within the industry. This means that only wine made from grapes grown in the area can have the name Perricoota on the bottle, and wine buyers anywhere in the world will know the wine will exhibit the characteristics and quality of the region.
