DISCOVER PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Papua New Guinea is a unique nation boasting breathtaking landscapes, unique cultures, and exotic flora and fauna. PNG lies entirely within the tropics and comprises a total land and sea mass of over 2.2 million square kilometres. The mainland is split lengthways by a rugged mountain range which gives rise to some of the highest peaks in the Pacific. With many of the peaks towering over 4,000 metres, trekking in PNG offers many unforgettable experiences with stunning views, wild orchids and spectacular birdlife. Like many of the islands, the mainland enjoys the protection of beautiful coral reefs and fine sandy beaches. The ocean is abundant in fish species providing the perfect opportunity to throw in a fishing line. Diving enthusiasts can explore the underwater seascapes and war wrecks during a memorable snorkel or dive adventure. The population of PNG lies at approximately 8 million people, most of whom are Melanesian in descent. While English, Pidgin and Hiri Motu are the official languages of PNG, the fact that more than 800 languages are spoken in the region demonstrates the sheer breadth of diversity. Many Papua New Guineans still enjoy a traditional life and visitors can embark on a cultural village tour to immerse themselves in the local customs and culture. PNG also boasts a number of islands that are well worth a visit, so take some time to explore this wondrous nation.

A SHORT HISTORY OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA

PNG forms the eastern half of the world’s second largest island after Greenland. In the 1800s, the western half was annexed by the Netherlands. The border was artificial and suited the needs of the imperial map makers who had to draw lines to represent the boundary of the Dutch empire, rather than consider the ethnic characteristics of the people or geographical landmarks. The British and Germans further divided the eastern section of the island in the 1800s. Germany lost its portion as a consequence of World War I (WWI) and, following the war, the League of Nations gave Australia a mandate to administer the region. The Japanese invasion of 1941, however, brought about the suspension of the Australian Civil Administration. In 1949, the United Nations turned the once British and German colonies into a single territory under Australian administration. The country, fully independent since 16 September 1975, has a freely elected democratic government. Papua New Guinea became the 142nd member of the United Nations on October 10, 1975, and is also a member of the British Commonwealth. Port Moresby was a small administrative centre for the Australian territories of Papua and New Guinea prior to World War II (WWII). During the war, it was the strategic target of the Japanese and, although invasion attempts were unsuccessful, the area was subjected to many air attacks. The area became a major American and Australian staging area and airfield complex in support of the Allied push to the north of New Guinea. Today, Port Moresby is the capital of PNG.

EXPLORE PNG’S COFFEE PNG coffee is earning a fine reputation among connoisseurs for its exemplary quality and fruity flavours. This might have something to do with its excellent growing conditions. In PNG, coffee is typically produced in rich soils in elevated gardens using organic agricultural methods, all of which contribute to a tasty brew. The humble coffee bean also has economic virtues, providing an estimated 2.5 million Papua New Guineans with a primary source of income. PNG coffee is sold far and wide throughout the world with around 40% distributed to Europe and 20% to Australia. The process by which the beans are prepared for sale also determines the quality of the final product. Once the coffee cherry (red bean) is picked, the bean is dried to an ideal moisture content. The beans then go through a process of dehusking and careful grading. Finally, the green beans are sent for packaging where they are stored in controlled conditions to protect the integrity of the beans. Generally, coffee is roasted at its destination to guarantee a fresh, quality brew. This also enables roasters to create their own exclusive blends. A visit to a local coffee factory might be in order if you’re planning a trip to Goroka in the Highlands.

PA L M O I L PNG’S BIGGEST EXPORT & EMPLOYER To many people, Papua New Guinea is best known as an exporter of premium grade coffee, however since 2000, PNG’s biggest export earner has been palm oil. Today annual palm oil exports of around 670,000 tonnes are worth around K1.5 billion, more than three times that of coffee, and constitutes 62.4% of the value of all agricultural exports. Given this scale, it is not surprising that the palm oil industry is the largest private-sector employer in the country, with 29,300 permanent direct employees on the payroll. Since its establishment in the late 1960’s, oil palm has become a major driver of rural development and livelihoods for local communities. Smallholder oil palm growers are a key part of the oil palm story, and the industry supports around 21,000 smallholder farms providing livelihoods to an estimated 200,000 people. Smallholders produce about 27% of the country’s oil palm crop. One of the biggest impacts of the palm oil industry comes from the revenue it feeds into rural local economies, for example in 2017 the oil palm industry in West New Britain Province channelled K38.5 million per month into the local economy through payments to smallholders and land owners, wages, payment for goods and services etc. This is the economic lifeline that supports the Province, creating a large multiplier effect that provides opportunities for the establishment and sustenance of local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and larger local businesses, for example New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) and Hargy Oil Palms Ltd directly supports over 700 SMEs paying them a total of K144 million in 2018. Even though palm oil supplies over 36% of global oils and fats, it only uses 5.5% of the land cultivated to produce this. For a given area of land, oil palm can produce 10 times more oil than other leading oilseed crops. Palm oil also uses significantly less fertilizer and pesticides. PNG’s palm oil industry has always been at the forefront of sustainable palm oil production where most of its Palm Oil is exported to Europe. The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) regularly assesses the World’s top 100 palm oil companies on their sustainability performance, and over the last few years ZSL has ranked NBPOL second highest globally in their sustainability assessments. The recent move by the Government to establish a Sustainable Palm Oil Platform for PNG is an excellent initiative to maintain the country’s reputation in global markets and ensure sustainable development impacts for the country.

ROAMING ADVENTURES Papua New Guinea offers a fantastic range of activities and attractions, from trekking rugged landscapes to diving colourful reefs to spotting stunning bird species. TREKKI NG With landscapes comprised of rugged mountain peaks and volcanoes, PNG provides the perfect environment for avid hikers to pit themselves against nature. The Kokoda Trail is one of the most famous hiking trails in the world today. Visitors travel from far and wide each year to experience the remote and difficult conditions experienced by WWII soldiers. While Kokoda is the most renowned trek in PNG, there are plenty of other hikes that are worth the effort. In the Highlands region, Mt Wilhelm looms large as the highest peak in PNG, while Mt Giluwe is also a favourite. Off the mainland, Bougainville provides another interesting trek along the Rotokas-Numa Trail, a track that was also a well-known WWII battleground. East New Britain offers a range of great hikes which include Kombiu, Rabaul Nakaia and Mt Vulcan. On West New Britain, trekkers can experience more stunning vistas from Mt Garbuna, Mt Lolo and Mt Otto. The Trans-New Britain Track which starts in East New Britain and extends across to the west traverses remote and tropical terrain.

DI V I NG With unique coral reefs, intriguing war wrecks and unusual fish species, PNG boasts some of the best diving in the world. The region forms part of the famous Coral Triangle, which has the highest diversity of tropical fish in the world. While diving along the entire PNG coastline is world class, the most popular dive sites are around Port Moresby, Tufi, Milne Bay, Madang, Kimbe Bay, Rabaul and New Ireland. Amongst divers’ favourites are Susie’s Bommie and Pumpkin Patch (POM); Planet Rock, Magic Passage and B25 Mitchell Bomber (Madang); George’s Wreck (East New Britain); Zero (West New Britain); and Echuca Patch and Albatross Passage (New Ireland). For those who wish to dive in PNG, full medical and evacuation insurance is required. This needs to be provided to any dive operator prior to undertaking any dives. Alternatively, insurance can be purchased onsite through the dive operator.

45

ROAMING ADVENTURES CONTINUED B I RDWATC H ING PNG is a birdwatcher’s paradise especially given the stunning bird of paradise is endemic to the region. A few of the popular varieties of bird of paradise that can be spotted include the Raggiana – known for its beautiful plumage, Blue Bird of Paradise, Queen Carola’s Parotia and King of Saxony. Male birds of paradise are known to perform an extravagant dance to attract a female mate. Birdwatchers are encouraged to take a morning trip to catch this spectacular mating ritual. With over 600 bird species on record, PNG offers an extensive range of other amazing bird species. Other species include the Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Azure Kingfisher, Nicobar Pigeon and Flame Bowerbird. Go online to papuanewguinea.travel where you’ll find a mini-pocket guide of the ‘Birds of Port Moresby’.

FI SHI NG From the rivers to the oceans, PNG offers the ultimate fishing experience. The ocean is flush with game fishing such as marlin, yellow fin, tuna, sailfish, giant trevally and dogtooth tuna. The black bass, on the other hand, reputed to be a tough catch even on a good day, can be found in the Fly, Sepik and Lower Ramu Rivers. If barramundi is your game, Bensbach Wildlife Lodge located in the Western Province organises fishing tours on a catch and release system for keen anglers. The Aramia River in the same province provides the opportunity to catch the Niugini Tiger Fish, a species totally unique to PNG. On West New Britain, Baia Fishing Lodge is the place to go to take fishing to another level. Bass fishing is a favourite in the region.

SURFI NG PNG continues to capture the hearts of surf enthusiasts around the world. With unlimited surfing potential all year round, PNG offers up consistent waves without the overcrowding. In Sero Cove just out of Port Moresby the waves range from three to six feet from May to November. On the northern side of the mainland, Madang, Wewak and Vanimo provide consistent swells with camps for avid surfers provided at Vanimo, Wewak and Aitape. On Bougainville Island, surfers will find a number of reef breaks and quality waves. New Ireland Province is one of the most popular destinations for surfers. Around Kavieng there are numerous reef setups, which provide solid surf breaks. Venturing north, Manus Island and the St Matthias group of islands provide the perfect opportunity to discover new breaks in remote conditions. UNIQUE REGIONS OF PNG

MOROBE PROVINCE Lae is the capital of the Morobe Province. Home to the famous Morobe Cultural Show, the township offers visitors plenty to see and do. Take a trip to the Rainforest Habitat where you can view magnificent flora while watching the wonderful array of PNG fauna from raised viewing platforms. The National Botanic Gardens which were recently restored is a relaxed environment to enjoy the exotic fauna of PNG. For history buffs, the Lae War Cemetery and Japanese Memorial should be on your list. Take a day trip out to the emerald pastures of Ramu Valley to experience a change of landscape from PNG’s typical jungle vegetation.

MADAN G P ROVINCE The township of Madang is a great base from which to explore the beautiful Madang Province. The waters surrounding the township are majestic and provide ample opportunity to explore the stunning coral and marine life. If you’re a land lover, drive up to Banara Village which is about a two hour drive north along the coast. The village provides a picturesque beach where visitors can snorkel, picnic or simply while away the hours. Island hop across to Pig, Kranket or Wangant Islands which all boast their own unique attractions. Don’t miss the Madang Festival if you’re around during the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June.

THE HIG H L A ND S The Highlands, otherwise known as the Heartland of PNG, comprises of a number of provinces. The Western Highlands is home to Mt Hagen, an extinct volcano, which offers great trekking. Meanwhile, the Simbu Province known for its rugged beauty lays claim to the largest peak in PNG, Mt Wilhelm. The mysterious skeleton tribe resides in the dense valleys of the province and can be seen performing at various cultural shows throughout PNG. Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province is the coffee capital of PNG which underpins the region’s economy.

48

MI L N E B AY PROVINCE Milne Bay, like many parts of PNG, is a Mecca for exotic bird species such as the beautiful bird of paradise. Known as the gateway to the Milne Bay Province, Alotau provides access to some of the most amazing coral reefs in PNG which are renowned for great muck diving and manta rays. If you’re in Alotau around November, make sure you catch the Canoe and Kundu Festival, a wonderful tribute to customs of a bygone era. See warriors in traditional dress and canoes racing on the waters. Alotau and Tawali are also great launching pads to explore the D’Entrecasteaux Islands and Trobriands.

SAN DAU N PROVINCE Located in the north-western pocket of PNG, ‘Sandaun’ is Tok Pisin for “sundown”. While the capital, Vanimo, is renowned for its surf lodge, the region is not a common travel destination. Still, there’s always plenty to see and do. During the day, locals sell their handmade wares in Vanimo where you can pick up some traditional market crafts. To explore the region by foot, take a leisurely walk around the headlands where you’ll discover some great beaches for swimming and snorkelling. Narimo Island, not far from Vanimo, is the perfect spot for a picnic and splash in the ocean.

THE WE ST E RN PROVINCE The Star Mountains in the Western Province attract heavy rainfalls which gives rise to the region’s most prevalent feature - the mighty Fly River. Sportsfishing along the river is reputed to be one of the finest. The dense rainforest areas also attract an awe-inspiring range of exotic bird species, with Kiunga Nature Tours offering a range of birdwatching tours. South of Kiunga, Lake Murray Lodge can organise cultural tours to the nearby Kuni Village where locals are only too happy to share their traditions and regional knowledge with visitors.

THE EAST SE PIK PROVINCE As PNG’s longest river system, it’s no surprise that the Sepik River inspires so much of the lifestyle and culture in the East Sepik Province. Today, the Chambri tribe still practice a crocodile scarification ritual which pays homage to the crocodile - the tribe’s fabled ancestry. Wewak, the capital of the province, is known for its great surf between October and April. For a more gentle activity, try snorkelling around the headland and the outer island reefs in its vicinity. If you want to get up close to some of the larger varieties of marine life, such as stingrays and reef sharks, head out for a diving adventure on the Hermit Islands. A visit to the province wouldn’t be complete without a boat tour along the great Sepik River.

C U LT U R E AND CUSTOMS CULTU RA L A RT E FA CT S Papua New Guinean art forms are as diverse as they are distinctive. Their intricate designs and unique shapes continue to intrigue people the world over. Most Papua New Guinean art has a spiritual and ceremonial meaning, which plays an important role in the lives of the villagers. Honouring tribal ancestors is a major theme in Melanesian life and so it comes as no surprise that the spirits of ancestors are immortalised in artefacts such as masks and sculptures. Artefacts are used in ceremony and rituals to honour both the living and the dead as well they have many practical applications. The indigenous flora and fauna in PNG provide both a source of inspiration and materials for artefacts. Although artefacts today are produced almost exclusively for resale, they are authentic replicas of traditional spirit figures, ancestral masks and weapons, often incorporating symbolic designs and motifs. You can be sure that every artefact you buy in the region is an original, from the beautifully woven and patterned wicker trays heralding from the Highlands to the brightly coloured carry bag called the ‘bilum’, which makes an evocative keepsake of PNG.

CUSTOMS When you are trekking in PNG it is important to understand you are walking through someone’s backyard - everything is either communally owned or owned by a family or tribe. Certain cultural taboos must be observed. Always ask a local guide if you are uncertain. Local guides also have the knowledge to help create a truly rewarding cultural experience. Ask as many questions as you can about the local culture, history, flora and fauna. Villagers are friendly and welcoming, but they are fairly conservative, so always wear long shorts (knee length) or pants/skirts and t-shirts. Swimming costumes can be too revealing so it is recommended that men wear shorts and women either shorts and a t-shirt or a sarong. Since you’re a bit of an oddity, you will be followed by curious children and stared at by everyone anytime you are out in a village. But don’t be intimidated – it’s not rude to stare in PNG. Help break the ice with a smile and a cheerful “apinun” which can help get some interesting conversations started with the locals. Although most villages have a few English speakers, learning some basic Tok Pisin makes for an easier and more interactive visit to rural areas.

ISLAND DREAMING Papua New Guinea is believed to have thousands of islands within its serene, tropical waters. The larger island provinces provide the opportunity to explore unique island cultures. EAST N E W B RITA IN Consisting of evergreen rainforest, rugged mountain peaks, impressive volcanoes and a history of wreckage and re-growth, East New Britain is a fascinating destination. The capital, Kokopo, isn’t too far from the original capital of Rabaul which was destroyed by volcanic eruptions back in September 1994. Rabaul boasts an impressive collection of WWII relics, tunnels and caverns, a result of the 1942 occupation by the Japanese. For history buffs, Yamamoto’s Bunker, Kokopo War Museum and The Japanese Peace Memorial are a must. The region also offers plenty of opportunity to trek, birdwatch, fish and dive. Don’t miss the Baining Fire Dance, a cultural performance unique to East New Britain.

WEST NE W B RITA IN While connected to the same land mass as East New Britain, West New Britain is a separate province in its own right. Kimbe is the capital of the province named after Kimbe Island which can be seen from the township. Like its geographical counterpart, West New Britain is also great for trekking, birdwatching, fishing and diving. For divers, Zero wreck is a popular dive in the region. Visitors can also check out the Garu Hot River which is naturally heated at over 41 degrees Celcius and said to contain therapeutic elements. Be on the look out for megapodes, also known as scrubfowls, which bury their eggs in warm volcanic earth and return only when the hatchlings are ready to burst into life.

B OUG A INVIL L E Bougainville was a place of great hardship due to the civil unrest that endured from 1988 to 1996. The 2012 film Mr Pip uses the civil war as a backdrop to tell the tale about a local girl who becomes enamoured by Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. Based on Lloyd Jones’ novel of the same title, the movie was filmed in PNG and many of the cast members were locals who had lived through these turbulent times. Today, Bougainville is a serene place that allows visitors to experience a place on earth, that in many ways, remains untouched. Birdwatching on the island is spectacular and a cultural village tour should definitely be on the cards. The Reed Festival, a bi-annual event staged in Arawa, celebrates the cultural diversity of the region showcasing music, dancing and creative arts.

52

NEW I RE L A ND P ROVINCE New Ireland Province is yet another fascinating region that boasts a range of remote tropical islands. While home to the famed Lihir Group of islands, it also encompasses the St. Mathias Group, The Tabar Group and the Tanga Group of islands. The province is inhabited by the Malagan, Kabai and Tumbuan people who have unique dances and dress which are proudly displayed at special ceremonies. One of the most unusual practices in New Ireland is shark hunting. While shark hunting is not atypical, in this instance the fishermen call the sharks to their boats. These unsuspecting creatures are then lured and caught in traditional fashion. For cycling enthusiasts, be sure to visit New Ireland to embark on a fantastic bike tour for which the region is famous.

MAN US ISL A ND The smallest of all the provinces, Manus is a peaceful haven that consists of a group of islands called the Admiralty Islands. The region is made up of tiny atolls that are mostly uninhabited. The largest island, Manus, boasts tall, heavily timbered hills, streams and a striking waterfall of fresh water. While known for its fishing and diving, Manus is fast becoming a popular destination for surfing and sea kayaking. If you haven’t tried kayaking before and enjoy the water, then consider taking a tour with one of the local companies. Tours can be as short as one day, or up to seven days for those wishing to really immerse themselves in the remoteness of the region.

D’EN TRE C A ST E A U X A ND T ROB RIA N D I S L A N D S The D’Entrecasteaux Islands includes Fergusson, Goodenough and Normanby Islands. Fergusson Island boasts a great hike from Warluma to Mt Lamanai with stunning vistas. Normanby Island meanwhile offers a thrilling dive through WWII wrecks just five minutes from shore. Goodenough Island, which was named by Captain John Moresby after a naval colleague, showcases interesting rock paintings and provides spectacular snorkelling due to the abundant marine life here. The Trobriand Islands, otherwise known as the Islands of Love, are made up of four central islands – Kiriwina Island, Vakuta, Kaileuna and Kitava. The social paradigm in the region is still dependent on traditional chiefs who govern the villages, however the hereditary lines are passed down via the female bloodline. During the Milamala Festival, between June and August, the locals celebrate harvesting the yam. Just ask a local where the best places are to explore caves, swim and snorkel around the island.
