General information

Welcome to Albany Albany is a town rich in history with breath taking scenery that has something to offer people of all ages. Albany was first settled in December 1826 by Major Edmund Lockyer who sailed into Princess Royal Harbour on the Brig Amity with 23 convicts on board. A full-scale replica is in dry dock at WA Museum. The forts were constructed on Mt Adelaide in 1893 to help defend Australia’s coastline from any approaching enemy. Our ANZAC’s in World War I & II got their last glimpse of terra firma before they sailed off to their deployment. You can wander through the old barracks and view some of our war time history. From there you can walk up Mt Clarence to the ANZAC Monument which is home to some breathtaking views as well as our Dawn Service which is growing in popularity each year. There are many old buildings scattered throughout the town site, which reflect the architecture and history of its time. Albany's natural harbour is an ideal port for cruise ships as well as the many cargo ships that export grain, sand and wood chips throughout the world.

Whale World, located at Frenchman’s Bay, is the site of the last operating whaling station. It has some fascinating exhibits, 3D animated movies and a Whale Chaser to walk over. This award winning tourist attraction shows how the whaling industries operated up until 1978. While you are out that way call in and check out the Gap, Natural Bridge and the Blowholes which have some of nature’s spectacular rock formations. On the way back, if you have time, call into the wind farm and walk around under the turbines or go to Mt Melville and look at the beautiful views of the city. Don’t forget to drive past our famous Dog Rock. If your taste buds are in need of some fine cuisine there is a variety of restaurants that will whet your appetite. Albany has a host of sporting facilities that can cater to all needs, from lawn bowls to golf and go-karts to aquatic activities. If you need any further information or directions, call into our office and our friendly staff will be more than happy to give you a helping hand.

There are plenty of ocean fairing activities to enjoy while staying in Albany. You can swim at Middleton Beach or in the protected waters of Emu Point, surf and bodyboard at Mutton Bird or Nanarup, and the more experienced can catch some waves at Sand Patch and Low Lands. If you want to wet a line you can fish off the beaches, the rocks, the jetty or one of the rivers. You can hire a charter boat or bring your own. You can dive and enjoy our wonderful marine life on one of the reefs or one of the wrecks, including the H.M.A.S. Perth. You can snorkel in many of the protected bays along the coastline. Whales and their calves can be seen breaching and frolicking in the bays from July to September. You can take a leisurely cruise up the river on the glass bottom boat, the Kalgan Queen. Enjoy billy tea and damper while you view the marine and bird life. You may even call in at Montgomery Wines for some wine tasting. If you have plenty of energy you can walk the Bibbulmun track. Walk or cycle around Lake Sepping as you check out the abundance of bird life. Get your pushy pumping or your feet pounding along the boardwalk around Marine Drive, which overlooks the headland, or from Middleton Beach to Emu Point. There are lots of scenic drives around the area and there is a plethora of award winning wineries to call into for a tasting or two. If the pace needs to slow down then go out to Mt Romance and learn about the Sandalwood oil and their bodycare products. You can relax with a massage or the ancient healing of “The Gong”.
