Visitors looking to enjoy some retail therapy can check out the capital’s flourishing weekend markets and modern shopping malls or explore the boutique-lined streets of Braddon and Manuka.
Nestled conveniently between Sydney and Melbourne, Australia’s vibrant, multicultural capital city is home to about 400,000 people. Just a short drive from the pristine beaches of the South Coast and the beautiful Snowy Mountains, Australia’s largest inland city is the perfect base for a self-drive holiday with no road tolls, ample parking and minimal traffic.
If arts and culture is your thing, Canberra has you covered with a multitude of galleries and museums to explore and discover more about Australia’s history. As an added bonus, most of the capital’s world-class national attractions offer free entry and all of them are within a 10 minute drive of the city.
Enjoying the great outdoors comes naturally in the bush capital as the city transforms with a kaleidoscope of colours across four distinct seasons. Soar above Lake Burley Griffin in a hot air balloon, hike the mountainous surrounds or venture into our nearby national parks to get up close and personal with native Australian wildlife. After all that fresh air you’ll have earned a little indulgence and Canberra’s red-hot food and wine scene is sure to impress. Refuel in the inner-city foodie precincts of Braddon, NewActon and the Kingston Foreshore – where you’ll find a delicious combination of hipster coffee shops, innovative cafes and award-winning restaurants – or spend the day sampling the ACT region’s cool climate wines, with more than 30 cellar doors located within 35 minutes’ drive of Canberra.

The region’s growing reputation for serving up tantalising brews offers beer lovers a haven of their own to explore. Enter Canberra’s very own microbrewery
scene. And while craft beer is still very much a buzz word, brewers here are delivering on the expectation that their beers are indeed unique and memorable. So where to start? With two beers taking spots in the top 20 of GABS Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers, you might want to park your palate at BentSpoke Brewing Co in Braddon. Try the likes of Mort’s Gold, a crisp beer for a hot day, or Barley Griffin for a fruitier, light malt. But it’s not just about the beer here, make sure you try one of the ciders produced from local apples. Try an award-winning beer paired with the best burgers in town at the Capital Brewing Co in Fyshwick. The brewery offers tours every Saturday and Sunday,
and bookings are essential. Other breweries that should be on your list include the German-inspired Zierholz Brewery and the Wig and Pen Tavern and Brewery. In March, Canberra pays tribute to its brews at the Canberra Craft Beer and Cider Festival. Put your palate to the test with over 80 beers and ciders. For more information, go to www.canberrabeerfest.com.au. Otherwise, if you’re visiting the region later in the year, you might catch Canberra Beer Week which runs for ten days with a range of beer-inspired events. There’s more fun and beer to be had at the ‘Beer Day Out’ Craft Beer Festival which falls within CBW. Cheers!

anberra is a city that takes pride in its well-manicured parks and gardens, and Commonwealth Park nestled beside Lake Burley Griffin is no exception. In springtime, the park alights with the most spectacular array of colour as part of Canberra’s muchloved Floriade festival.

Floriade is much more than the sum of its flowers. Aside from its incredible blooms, Floriade celebrates Canberra’s colourful local culture boasting food and wine events, horticultural workshops, regional art, market stalls and entertainment. With the festival ultimately paying tribute to nature, Floriade has implemented a range of sustainable practices, with bike racks to encourage people to ride to events, green catering using recyclable packaging and water saving regulations.
To catch Floriade, the festivities run for four weeks during September through to October. One festival not to be missed! See Floriade in a different light at the after dark spectacular, Floriade NightFest, which runs over five nights each September. This is a ticketed event, with the flowerbeds lit up and music, food, comedy and more on offer.
